And more!

Compared to Linus Bruckman, which I kept totally secret right up to release, I'm being very forthcoming with information about this game and its development. (I'm remaining tight-lipped on the story and puzzles though.) So, if you're interested in following the game's production, keep checking in at the xii games blog (http://www.xiigames.com) for more production diaries and information.  And don't be stingy with the comments!

Thanks to my shoe-string budget, all the members of the team deserve some extra payment in the form of recognition for their hard work.  So if you see something you like, be sure to let us know!  I hope you like what you see!

Wow. That's just ... incredible. Luckily it's not the 1st of April :)
I wish you good luck with the production of this game.

EDIT: And after reading your developer's diary, I have to say: You have had some really creative ideas, that add a lot to the adventure genre. Good work!

I've been keeping an eye out on this one over on your blog, and it is easily the AGS game that has me the most excited.

Artwork that is incredible (both background and character art is jaw droppingly stylish), a concept that is great, and a soundtrack that we all know is going to be superb. Just looking at the screenshots and reading your ideas about the game's style makes me feel that this is more than just some adventure game to play and forget about.

After Linus and Anna, I have complete confidence in the quality of the story and the puzzles. The "team" of characters that has to work together and the memory based inventory system - who can not be hopeful of an interesting and enjoyable gameplay experience after hearing this?

Whilst I've seen all these screenshots before, the new video is great. You have an object label thing that fades in and out! Fantastic! The inventory looks ridiculously good, flashing lights, shiny panels... it's fantastic. The drag and drop inventory has me... interested. I'm sure it is an intuitive process, so good stuff :).

The animation is smooth and very cool - we all know ProgZ is the master anyway ;) - and the background graphics are superb. My favourite is still the laboratory background, of course, with it's ridiculously atmospheric design, but this one is gorgeous as well - reminiscent of a Deus Ex style setting, except with a bit more character. There is a train animating in the background!? HELL YES!

The way you drag the door up to the STM - YES. That's perfect!

Wow. If I sound like a drooling fanboy, then yes, that is what I am. I was a little disappointed we didn't get to hear music during the video, but I am confident Nikolas will give us a soundtrack that will take our breaths away.

This may be the longest, most disgustingly drool filled post I've ever written. I honestly do not care. I love the graphics, the ideas, everything. I will buy this game. My only question is - will you have special editions of the game (leading on from Peder's question about the cd version)? I'd feel like less of a fanboy if I didn't purchase a soundtrack cd, etc ;).

EDIT: Oh, and Cellfish Networks = ;D

(hope there's a bit more of this sort of humour through the game :))

I don't even know what to say, Vince...

This game looks so beatiful and the interface is genius - I love it and am looking forward to it... very much.

Thanks for the video and the insight on the STM - it's just amazing.

I'm just simply amazed by this game! I would easily lay down around $20 for a game like this, if it is going to be as I've seen so far!

Also inspires it me to take adventure games to the next level, as you have done with your great GUI ideas! STM, LTM, just genious!

Good luck with the game and to the whole team!

Thanks everybody for the awesome comments!  I'm sure it'll help keep everyone on the team pumped too!

To answer Peder and Ben, I can't say anything for certain about the distribution methods of the game, but I definitely would want to sell both a download version and a physical CD version, even if it's only a limited-edition kind of deal.  You'll have to ask me again when the release gets (much) closer!

And Ben, sorry I didn't release more of Nik's great music in that video!  If I do another one, I promise to show off more of the soundtrack!

Also, Vince has done some extremely creative things with the dialog system.  You will like it.

Cool - as one of those strange people that prefers to own something that takes up shelf space, a cd version would make me just that bit happer :).

There we go! :D

A guy can't take a small break in Geneva and the alps, skiing with his family and pop this thread appears!

Nice one Vince! Looks great! Can't wait to play it!

Oh wait...  :-\

And to confirm to what Progzy says: Vince is an awful employer! I really hate working with him. But I didn't learn my lesson in Linus, so had to try again. And probably, do it again next game he makes...  :P

_______________

Ben, the small snipet in the video, is part of the game, but it's only 5 secs in the video (while it's 1 minute ingame). There are various tracks already, so after I get back to London and speak to Vince we'll arrange something, I'm sure. :)

And I hadn't seen the video, and I knew nothing about that! But I had played that particular room. Video looks extra cool!

Nik!  People are going to think you're telling the truth! ... you are joking, right?  :P

Ben, if and when I make another video, I'll show off the dialog system for ya!

Holocoz, I'll let ProgZ speak for himself, but Nauris does the backgrounds in Photoshop, and I do some additional artwork in Photoshop and make some special effects in Particle Illusion.

And a big THANKS to everybody else who commented!

Awesome! If it's anything like how the STM has been implemented, consider me excited. Dialog trees frustrate me with how much they limit us when we create a game... any new take on this will be welcomed eagerly by myself. From what I have read in your development diaries, you've got some excellent plans; I'm very much looking forward to seeing this in action :).

QuoteBut the word out is that... you and me are in love, isn't it? ;D

Of all the AGS games that I have seen, this one is the one that appeals the most to me. I find it simply beautiful, not only the gfx but also the interface and the gameplay as well.

When everything looks so good, I bet we can also trust the screenplay and the puzzles.

I play my games on my laptop so I guess the drop and drag-inventory thing will be hard on my small touchpad if you have to keep the button pressed while draging an item. But I guess I can make an exeption and use a mouse...

Disco: I'll only be living here for another four months, then it's back to the other side of the world (but making sure to stay as far away from those dirty Europeans as possible!)

Dixon: You made a very valid point about using a laptop, so so today I programmed in a Laptop Mode option.

If you play in normal mode you have to click and drag to use inventory items or mess with your STM.  If you play in the new laptop mode, you just hold down the left mouse button for a second until you pick it up.  The icon will then lock to your cursor and you can let go of the mouse button.  Click again to drop it.  It should make playing on a laptop much easier!  Thanks for the idea!

Everybody else: Thanks for the encouragement and kind words.  I'm doing my best to make sure that it's a fine game and that you actually get to play it this century!  :P

With regards to the laptop mode:

It really, really impresses me when somebody says "Oh, this could be a problem" and instead of saying "Well.... 95% of players will be using a mouse so I won't worry about this" or whatever, the developer instead takes the time to program in a function to solve the problem, whether minimal or not.

Very encouraging to see this level of commitment here, and what a fantastic attitude to apply to game design :).

Lazily copied from the blog (http://www.xiigames.com), an update!

I’d like to formally welcome the newest member of the Resonance team, Marina “MashPotato” Siu-Chong, who is going to be creating some close up portraits for use during some cutscenes and also for promotional purposes!

And to make up for the long period between updates, here’s a work-in-progress of Ed who has just seen something surprising. Perhaps a leprechaun!

Megabump.

I wont usually follow a game past page 1 because I think by that point it is either caught up in some kind of promotional topic drama or ********** *********, but I guess I felt the need to post on this one, it looks sweet as hell.

What kind of timeframe are you tacking on for the completion of this game? I know it's impossible to give numbers but this year? next year? I'm always thrown off by these ambitious projects that never see the light of day and I'm excited to see how this one turns out so I'll be keeping a close eye on it I guess. Keep us updated.

Ooh, I've definitely been lacking in the updates lately.  Got busy with Nanobots for a while.  Now gearing up for my move from Japan to America.

As for the timeframe, it depends on a lot of things.  It's a free time project for everyone involved since I can't pay enough for full-time dedication.  I'd love to have it done by Christmas, but I don't think that's realistic.  Unless I win the lottery or something!  When I get close enough to estimate a date, I'll do so, but all I can say for sure at this point is that it's not going to be very soon!  Sorry!

Yessir!

I should have copy/pasted the short explanation from my blog:

QuoteThe first (of… possibly more?) official Resonance poster shows off the four playable characters and the many varied emotions found throughout the game. Like “Surprised” and “Crying” and… “Headache”. So pretty much the whole gamut. Print it up and hang it in your locker!

It's hard to estimate the overall progress or when we'll be done.  To be honest, I had originally planned to have this done by Christmas 2008.  Obviously, we're far behind where we wanted to be.  But quality takes time!  And it is quality!

A little info in here:  Resonance Developers Diary #3 (http://xiigames.com/2007/08/03/resonance-developers-diary-3/)

Basically, it's just a "What's happened in the game so far" collection of memories, as well as some character back-story memories.  These are used in some dialog puzzles where you have to bring up previous events and can be used to flesh out characters by talking to other characters about things that have happened.

I am so eagerly awaiting this game! Because of this project I check now and then the boards for it's release! Hopefully this year... btw, is going to be free, or commercial? Not that it matters, only for the GUI I would buy it!

So just here my personal praises to the project, for stimulance to continue! :)

Is it going to include full voice-over?

Title: Re: Resonance - New Poster! 12/25/2008
Post by: Vince Twelve on Tue 20/01/2009 14:58:15
Yes, it will be commercial.  Sorry, but I'm not expecting to get rich from this, just hoping to make back the investment I put into it.

As far as voice overs, I haven't said anything about that yet, because I didn't want to commit myself to something.  I'll tell you what I'm planning, though.  As you can see in the developer diary video linked to in the first post, the characters use thought bubbles while thinking to themselves, like when examining items in the room.  I think that these will not have voice overs.  However, the spoken lines of dialog (which use a speech bubble instead of a thought bubble) will be voiced.

The reason for this is that there is a freaking huge amount of text in the game.  Remember, you can add pretty much any item you see to your memory and then talk to any character in the game about that item.  I'm trying my best to give a large number of those interactions unique text.  That creates a lot of things to talk about.  So, to cut a corner, I'm planning for only spoken text to be voiced.  Internal dialog stays internal.

Does this sound like a good solution to you?  Would anyone be upset by that?

I think that's a really good solution. Besides, when all the text is voiced, I have a tendency to click through it (Sorry! I read fast ;)).

I think the important thing is to consider how much larger the game would be were you to voice every single line in the game.  It would probably triple the size of the installer!
Title: Re: Resonance - New Poster! 12/25/2008
Post by: Charity on Wed 21/01/2009 20:33:57
I always get this incomplete feeling in voice acted adventure games where the narration is plain old text.  I'm not sure if the contrast would be more or less jarring in the context of a thought bubble from a character whose spoken lines are voice acted, versus a big block of text from an unidentified narrator in same.  In a way it might help, because you would never have to ask "did they just say that line out loud or did they think it?" if you happened to miss the visual cues.  Though that could also be accomplished with some sort of echo filter and a "thoughtful" vocal inflection.

It is hard to say.  It might feel appropriate and it might feel jarring.  I think that voice acted thoughts would create a fuller experience (supposing you get good voice actors), but even if the player missed the voices at first, I think most players would adjust fairly quickly, and stop thinking about it.  I would consider it a valid corner to cut, if it saves you a considerable amount of time and effort.  It certainly wouldn't make me any less likely to buy this game.

It's funny.  When I tested my games without voiceovers, the testers got bored.  But when the voiceovers were IN the game, they tended to click through them.  Kind of a catch-22, in a way.

Time to post a real post and not bullshit!  :P

From my perspective I'd say that having the voice acting, when thinking in some... reverby voice would be fine I think. It works in the movies it should work in games as well. It's not difficult to apply so it's fine.

In addition, I have a feeling, but it remains to be seen, that voice acting does not need the 'perfect' quality. It shouldn't make too much difference if it's mono or stereo (whereas in music it does play an important part), and as long as it's not a completely lousy compression, it should sound fine and keep the voices clear and crisp, as they should be.

Given that I'd think that the added size wouldn't be substantial! Especially considering that the game is low res, thus graphics don't take too much size as well.

From Vince's part I'd imagine that he'd be swarmped with voice acting files, which is rather difficult. I mean it could very well get over 500 files, or more, which is a nightmare to keep tidy and all that. Plus the (probably) additional pay, and everything else. The compromise of having the thoughts silent is not a bad one, but it does remain to be 'voted' in or out by the beta testers...

Haha... yeah, we're going to be a bit over that...  like 4 or 5 times that at least.  :-*  But this kind of discussion can go back to the development board.

I'll make a decision regarding the voice acting for thoughts once I get to a place in the game where I know that the script is finalized and mostly implemented.  We've just got Deirdra Kiai on board and she's cleaning up and rewriting numerous dialogs, so I'm nowhere near the time when this decision has to be made.

Having a stereo track for voice files would be plain wasteful. Even if you recorded it with a stereo-microphone there still wouldn't be much difference between the two channels.
I'm also pretty sure there are ways to reduce the audio size without changing quality by clipping certain frequencies that are either not easily audible to human ears or that go unused (e.g. cutting out the background noise but not the voice itself).

Post by: InCreator on Thu 22/01/2009 09:05:54
Sorry if it's mentioned already in this thread, but I have a question:

Are backgrounds hand-drawn from scratch, or is some kind of reference used - and if, then what? Handdrawn scans? Basic 3D? Photo tracing?

I don't mean things that were looked at (we all look at photos etc when drawing by hand), but actual lines it was drawn onto.
Was any reference used?

I'm asking because I spot numerous techniques and style I use (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=23580.msg293067#msg293067), only that those screens look slightly better and more professional than mine.

Apart from this offtopic, I'd say this is one helluva nice looking game. ProgZ' characters totally match the background style and everything looks very... tasty. Pity it's commercial...
Title: Re: Resonance - New Poster! 12/25/2008
Post by: Vince Twelve on Thu 22/01/2009 15:39:56
I don't know all the details of his techniques, but I know that he does use basic 3d to build some of the more complicated scenes.  (I believe he just uses Google Sketchup to get buildings or whatever in perspective)  And he often takes textures that are meant for 3D programs, but he lays them on manually in photoshop and will paint over them at least partially to make them blend with the scene.  There are also, I believe, some photo references used for shape or texture.  And he loves to use grunge brushes to make things dirty.  (This isn't a shiny, picturesque city, afterall.)

He also works in a higher resolution and we scale it down for the game, which pixelizes it somewhat and hides some of the imperfections.  If we kept the backgrounds higher-res, he'd have to be spending a lot of extra time polishing things up, which would increase his fees and would probably increase the cost of the game!

Let me know if you want more specifics than that.  I could ask him.  Actually a background from start to finish would be an interesting developer diary.

It definitely would... But I'm quite familiar with the style he's using and pretty positive I can reproduce it with much less effort (no resizing, my detail faking methods, etc). It's simply an eye of a designer I lack, those light solutions and general shapes - and especially composition (love the blue room background!!!) he makes - are very unique.
Such diary entry would benefit many other artists though, no doubt.

Actually, I'd love to see exactly what goes on in ProgZmax's head when making those sprites! I mean, what's the workflow and how are colors selected. How come they match backgrounds so well, yet stand out nicely? My characters never seem to really fit my backgrounds, mainly due low detail and bad color choices...

But I personally wouldn't want to stall you though, you have a cool game to make.

RE: Voiceovers.
You could quite easily save voices for any important cutscenes, as well as the intro and finale sequences.  I don't think anyone expects you to put voice to every line of dialouge (let alone the thoughts as well).

I personally like voiceovers and feel that they complete a good game, and filesize is not a problem for me, but I could just as easily go without.

You know, I admit that I am guilty of clicking through voiceovers. I think that people really like hearing the characters with their own voices, but at the same time, people get impatient when listening because they read through the caption before the voiceover is finished playing, so they click through.

You can say that AGAIN!

Anyway, about voiceovers, I mostly NEVER click thorugh the voices, and I honestly feel a game with voices feels more complete and more interesting to play than games without!

There is loads of good games without voices but I feel the game gets more interesting WITH them.
A good example in my mind is Le Woltaires last game a second face where he only mostly used voices in cutscenes, and that alone worked very well as specially cutscenes gets more interesting WITH voices!
It gives you a better experience cause then you can also concentrate more on whats happening rather than reading the text.. (Sorry Vince Twelve for "advertising" another game in your thread! but it IS a really good example of how it can be done).

But yours, I would buy. The effort gone in on all parts must be huge... A very well done!!!  ;D

Depending on the price of postage I would probably buy the CD version (if there is one lol) You should so include a signed poster (if not just for your own ego lol)  ;D

I'd love to include a poster (signed?) with a hardcopy of the game as kind of a collector's edition.  I can't really make any decisions on that until that time gets closer though.

The voice acting question was handled vaguely a couple pages ago.  Basically, the main line of thought on this is that the spoken lines will have voice acting and the internal dialog (like the characters thinking to themselves "It's a door" etc.) will just be text.  So, speech bubble=voice acting, thought bubble=no voice acting.  Probably.

I'm glad you guys all feel that the game looks worth the small fee to play!  I appreciate all your comments!

@Puddin and Peder: Thanks!  She is enjoying America!

@Garage: You know, the mouse wheel for scrolling is always something I intended to include but never got around to doing.  I'll definitely have that in there.  Though, personally, the autoscrolling has been so perfectly tweaked (you'll notice that it's slightly elastic in the video) that it just feels so natural and perfect, I'm not sure if anyone will ever end up using any of the other options I'm throwing in.  But choice is always good!

@Spike: Glad you're liking it!

@rbaleksandar: Thanks.  I AM lucky!

@Dual:  Thanks for your blog comment (and the one you posted a week or so back).  And thanks for the blog post!  I'll definitely be asking the generous forumites to help me spread the word of this game upon release in lieu of an advertising budget!  So I'll be counting on you and SSH!

I realize that I've already cluttered this thread up with so much expression of anticipation and excitement that you are probably bored of seeing my name in here. This, sadly for you, will not deter me from going and adding some more right here.

It is incredibly inspiring to see how much work you people have put into this game! I didn't expect to see anything in this trailer that would make me say "Resonance looks even better than before", but the second I saw that background animating, I realized I was wrong. So wrong!

There are so many little touches for everything in the game! The little circle when you click something, the different transparencies, all of these things completely amaze me. Seeing your auto scrolling and gui in action is really exciting! The character animations and everything, really. You people are talented and great!

Seeing this trailer is evidence that Resonance is filled with the sort of effort that makes a game feel professional. It makes me inspired and motivated to make games, and I really look forward to buying and enjoying this game when it is done.

Thanks for showing us a bit more of your game! I couldn't possibly be more excited about it!

Edit:

QuoteBen, if and when I make another video, I'll show off the dialog system for ya!

@Dual:  Thanks for your blog comment (and the one you posted a week or so back).  And thanks for the blog post!  I'll definitely be asking the generous forumites to help me spread the word of this game upon release in lieu of an advertising budget!  So I'll be counting on you and SSH!

Just in case someone decides to be a smartass, Vince isn't paying me anything, I just wrote down, my own subjective opinion(Yes, the opinions I write are my very own). The video I saw really impressed me, that's why I took the effort(more of a joy) to post in the blog.

And Vince? If something is really good, it advertises itself. ;D

Anyway, best of luck with this.

@Ben304:  Thanks!  I'm glad that the work going into these screens and interfaces get noticed and appreciated.  I'm sure everyone on the team is glad as well!

@ProgZ:  :-[ Heh, I was waiting to release the next alpha till after you were all done (or almost done) Convergence-ing!

@Crazy: Thanks, I'm looking forward to it too!

@Dual: I'm glad you pointed out that I'm not paying you, because If I were paying off bloggers, my team members who are not being amply paid or not paid at all might get jealous.  :P

Keep up the good work everyone, I'll look forward to the release... whenever it may be.

Resonance as in the state attributed to certain molecules of having a structure that cannot adequately be represented by a single structural formula but is a composite of two or more structures of higher?

I really like the look of this game - if it can be called that. Is there a specific word to describe something with amazing graphics and seemingly enthralling plot? I suppose there is... Resonance. :)

I'll be playing this however extortionately priced it is! Nice job.

Hey everybody!  Two quick notes:

1) If you're not into Twitter (where I've been posting fairly regular production updatelets), you can now become a fan of Resonance on Facebook.  There will be regular status updates, especially during our current big push, while we get the game ready for IGF.  So, if you're on Facebook, be sure to add yourself!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Resonance/163224168451?ref=ts

2) Also, in order to help me out with IGF entry fees and some extra expenses I'd like to take on for the game, I'm having a little fund raising drive.  I don't expect any big donations unless anyone is feeling particularly generous, but I've set up a way for people to pledge money to help the development of the game and to get something in return for your pledges.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/VinceTwelve/resonance-retro-styled-adventure-game-contest-e

Basically, this is the first way to preorder the game, as anyone who pledges $15 or more will get a coupon to download the game when it becomes available.  There are more gifts for pledging more than that like an early playable mini-demo, guaranteed spots on the beta-testing team, posters, and for the crazy generous, yourself in the game!

Again, I'm mainly providing this as a means for people to get pre-orders, but if you're feeling generous, or any of the gifts tickles your fancy, I'd appreciate any other support you can offer.

(http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/VinceTwelve/resonance-retro-styled-adventure-game-contest-e/widget/card.jpg) (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/VinceTwelve/resonance-retro-styled-adventure-game-contest-e)

$150 covers the game's entry to IGF and a little bit extra.  Anything beyond that goes straight to the team, speeding up development, and to improving Resonance even further!

This is a bit of an experiment, and your chance to support closes on November 1st.  Thanks!

Vince, does the money taken out of the our pledge come out now? Because If I added more later, I dont want it all to come out at the same time unexpectedly.  But a little at a time works ok for me.

EDIT:

Can we add one more incentive to the list? Anyone who pledges $20 gets a walkthrough instantly with the game.

Hmmm.  As I understand it, nothing comes out of your card until the period ends.  So, if you pledge 15 now, and then increase it to 35 later, then all 35 will come out of your account on November 1st.  I think you just have to plan ahead for all the money to come out at once.  Sorry!

I thought I posted a reply, but now it's gone.  Damn forum elves.

Chicky, thanks!  I hope Res can snag a nomination, but I'm not sure what kind of a chance a traditional-ish P&C has at IGF.  We'll see!

Minimi: Wow, thanks!  Don't stretch yourself too thin, though!  Every little bit helps!

Mods: I don't at the moment, but I'll let you know if I try that out sometime.

Joe: PMed

Thanks everyone for the support with this!  These donations help me keep up the high quality, and perhaps more importantly, help speed things up since I don't have to wait for a couple pay checks to come in before I can afford the next batch of backgrounds, etc.  I'm totally floored by the response so far!

I think you should take all the money and blow it on a pointless-but-expensive feature, like hiring some semi-famous actor to voice just the title screen (Alexis Denisof: "New Game... Load Game... Quit"). That way we'll know what our money went to, and we can sit moving the mouse cursor over each menu item in turn, savoring our investment.

Fundraising seems to have had quite the b00m since the last time I checked the page. I'm hoping that with each expansion there is a corresponding contraction between now and the release!

Yeah, yesterday one guy swooped in and donated $500, nearly doubling the donations so far.  I about fell over when I woke up to see that.

And yeah, there will be some hastening of the release due to the extra funds.  I won't have to wait a few paychecks before ordering the next batch of backgrounds etc., which means less programmer art, which means increased implementation speed.  Plus, all these donations are very motivating!  My late-night working sessions have been getting longer ever since I started my Kickstarter page!

Title: Your voice in Resonance!
Post by: Vince Twelve on Tue 13/10/2009 18:57:12
Hey everybody!  I'm in the middle of the mad dash up to the IGF deadline, and need a teensy bit of help!

A portion of the game takes place in a hospital and I'm looking to have a stable of soundclips of secretaries/whoever over the hospital intercom saying stuff like:

Quote"Doctor Hansen to the OR. Doctor Hansen to the OR."

"Paging Doctor Nielson to ICU 43. Doctor Nielson."

"Doctor Kotou, you have a call on line three.  Doctor Kotou."

"Shepard line seven.  Shepard line seven."

"Nurse Keeling to room C.  Keeling, room C."

Then, with a big collection of those, I can just play one randomly every minute or so.  It helps the atmosphere and helps bring the game to life!

So, if you want to have a bit of fun with a microphone, I'd really appreciate your help!

You can say whatever you want, work in an inside-joke or whatever, just make it something that you might hear over the intercom in a hospital.  Of course, I reserve the right to not use any that are inappropriate or might detract from immersion for whatever reason. ;)

Help me out by either posting it here in this thread, or by emailing it to Nik at nikolasideris at hotmail dizzitydot com who will clean them up and balance audio or whatever magic he does.

Thanks!!!

Edit: By the way, I'm sending the game in to IGF around the 25th, so before then!  The sooner the better, of course! :)

Snarky is wise in his ways.

I forget which program ProgZ uses for his animations, but other than character animations, I believe every other artist uses Photoshop.  That's what I use for the few parts where I do my own graphics.

Thanks guys!

After months of working late into the night (or early into the morning if you prefer) and sleeping less than 5 hours every night and going to work the next day, Resonance finally hit a big milestone!  We've put together the first... I'd say about 1/4 of the game, and gotten it fully tested and polished and playable.  There is, of course, work done beyond that 1/4, but I've been trying to get this portion completely finished (except for voice acting) for submission into the Independent Games Festival (http://www.igf.com) and I just submitted it at long last!  A full day and a half before the deadline!  Yay!

There are a good selection of AGS games getting submitted this year including Resonance, Blackwell Convergence, and Puzzle Bots, so hopefully we can snag a couple nominations!  But there are at least 200 other awesome games also entered into the competition, so it's going to be really tough!

I got so much motivation from all the support from this forum and from Facebook, Twitter, and Kickstarter, that it kept me powering through the long sleepless nights.  So, thanks to you all!  Now, I'm going to sleep for a week.  Then: back to the grind for the next milestone!

I had a very small beta team of some trusted friends going over the game for the last half a month in preparation for IGF.  One of the testers was Ben "Ben304" Chandler, and I wanted to share a couple quotes that he wrote after his first playthrough:

Quote from: Ben304
I tried to play like a player, and not like someone who likes to build games on my first playthrough but I couldn't help but going at certain points "How would one script this up!?
[...]
The graphics and music are incredible.
[...]
Long term and short term memory works very successfully. It's honestly the best way to have conversations about stuff in any adventure game I've ever played
[...]
Interface is as intuitive as breathing. Once I got into that lab (and the gui bug had been fixed) I found myself more at home with this than any other interface ever. I can't believe how much I can do with so few clicks.

Hope that gets you salivating!

I just checked the videos posted in the thread (they are old, but I didn't notice them before).
I wonder, why do you consider drag&drop inventory usage more convenient?
Personally, I usually hated these kinds of things both in games and software.
Title: Re: Resonance - Facebook! Preorder!
Post by: Vince Twelve on Fri 30/10/2009 19:33:20
Without drag and drop, you would not be able to perform the same range of actions on items in the game with the same degree of ease and fluidity.

Take for example, the STM (short term memory).  You can add any item (couch, ash tray, guy sitting on bench) in the game to it for use in dialog later in the game.  To add an object to your STM, you just click and drag the item, the STM comes down automatically, and you can drop it into an available slot.

If you were to do this without drag and drop (i.e. with normal mouse clicks) we would have to put some sort of extra GUI choice between the player and his action since left and right clicking are already assigned to interact/examine respectively.

For example, a GUI similar to the Sierra verb-switch gui could go at the top of the screen, then you'd have to click the "add to STM" verb and then click on the object you want to add.  To me, that's cumbersome.

Or you could put something like a verb coin in there, so when you click on an item you can choose to add it to your stm, or interact with it.  But again, that's cumbersome because you have to do it for every click where you'll almost always want to interact.  I don't want to make such a common command take two clicks.

As it's implemented, I think that the drag and drop feels entirely natural and intuitive (or at least I hope so).  It's especially familiar since you do it probably every day on your computer, putting something in the trash or moving a folder.  I developed and tested the game using a laptop with no mouse about 80% of the time, and could easily perform every action without fail using a standard track pad.

Of course the real judges of how well the system works are the players, and so far, I've heard only very positive reactions to the interface!  So, I hope when you get your hands on the game, you'll think so too!

Let me know which software or games you think used drag and drop to their detriment so I can try them out and figure out what kind of pitfalls to avoid!  Thanks Crimson!

Well, usually it was irritating for me that you have to keep mouse button pressed all the time while moving mouse. Maybe it is only me, but I found it tiresome in certain cases, and I sometimes I have this paranoia that I'll "drop" the item on occasion :)

But that depends on implementation ofc, like how often/frequent you should do that, etc

Oh, haha, you mentioned me so I can talk in here without feeling like I am giving away secret squirrels I am not supposed to be.

Crimson:

I gotta say this man, despite what reservations you may have about dragging and dropping it all feels perfectly natural. I mean that. Maybe it takes a minute or two to familiarise yourself with the interface, but after that you realize that every other point and click adventure game ever made has been doing it wrong, and somebody has finally figured out how to do it right.

Ryan Timothy just asked me about this, so this is how I feel: If Resonance's interface doesn't change the way we make adventure games, then people are complete fools. The conventions we've been accepting all along as standard seem so outmoded and redundant compared to this that I can't help but frown when I go back to playing other games (including my own).

Sorry for the shameless drooling in your thread once again, Vince  :-*

Edit: Also, congrats on getting the game sent in to the IGF comp, guys, and best of luck!

Ha, I think Ben is overstating the case a bit,  ;D but he's not alone in liking the interface!  Hopefully you'll like it too Crimson!

And Dualnames is right, Laptop-Mode is a planned option.  I hadn't mentioned it because I implemented it early on, but haven't been maintaining or testing it.  I will try my best to have it included in the final version.  It will make a double click into a drag start, and click again to drop.  It will need a lot of testing to make sure it feels right.

Hehe, now that I re read it that sounds like a rhetoric filled propaganda flyer! I sound like Peder talking about Gameranger  :-[ ;D

Seriously though, Vince, your interface is one of the few interfaces in the AGS world that excites me and makes me feel like I can see The Future (and I'm not allowed to talk about one of the other ones :()

@Snarky: Thanks!  Though, it's looking like it might be a bit less than that as the single largest donor is having trouble clearing the bank!  Plus Kickstarter gets their cut, and Amazon gets theirs...  Still, it's a huge help, and I super appreciate your pledge and all the rest!  The difference will be noticeable!

@CosmoQueen: Thank you!  The graphics team rocks, I'm super lucky to have them!  Keep your eye out for future preorder/pledge opportunities.  They may happen!

@Dixon: You did indeed!  And it's on my list!  It just wasn't on my list for the IGF deadline!  I'll get it in there, like I said, it just needs a lot of tweaking!

TimW of Indiegames.com named Resonance one of his 10 favorite games of the IGF (http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2009/12/article_my_ten_igf_2010_picks.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+IndependentGaming+(Indie+Games)&utm_content=Twitter)!  That's good news!

He also mentioned that all the AGS games in the competition this year were good!  And I had never heard of one of them...

The finalists are supposed to be named in the first couple weeks of 2010, so keep your fingers crossed!  Go Team Blue Cup!

Thanks JimBob!  Yeah, adventure games got pretty shut out (as per usual, I guess) from the IGF, with the exception of Trauma which is a pretty groovy looking experimental adventure deal, that I'd like to try out.

But it's all good!  It was a huge field of 300 awesome entries, so getting noticed through all that was always going to be a long-shot.  Thanks for the support!

Yes... can you imagine it?

"Vince open the lights".
- I don't understand
"Turn on lights"
- ok.
"Leave the room"
- where to?

yeah, that would be fun.

Not to mention the ONE single thing I'm bothered with adventure games: When you try something it either works or it doesn't! There's no trying again until you get it right!

this is my first encounter with this game and i must say i am really impressed. not just with the artwork and animations, but the gui and the idea of using a short term memory and long term memory as points for discussion in conversations in the game. that is such a great idea, that it makes me wonder why nobody ever came up with it. i amreally looking forward to this. it might just be my first purchased ags game. ;D

hey the graphics look great, but am I the only one who doesn't quite get this image:
it hurts my head to try and understand this image. is it a hole in the wall, then if it is its badly drawn. I just can't get my head around it. Or is it some weird spacial warp or something???? maybe it would make more sense with context and animation.

It's actually a spherical chunk out of the room from a height somewhere above the floor, so sections of machinery and the wall are gone.  I think Nauris did an excellent job on the room considering the source material and Vince's Wacky Physics (TM), personally.  :=

Well, if you saw this interview with Logan Cunningham (http://youtu.be/q7pJJX-Le1Q), the cat's officially out of the bag. Wadjet Eye is publishing Resonance.

My wife Janet has been programming it full time for the last eight months or so, and we just started VO recording last week. It's looking frigging AMAZING, and it's a real honor to be involved. We're aiming for a May release, although we don't want to commit ourselves until we know for 100% sure.

That is all!

In honor of my 30th birthday, I'm planning on u-streaming development tonight at 10PM US Central Time (ish).  I'll post a link here (and on twitter and facebook) when I'm starting up.  You can watch me work on the last mini-game of the game and I'll be answering questions and talking while working.

If you're into that, see you tonight!

I'll also record the session and share the link later if you want to watch.

And for the record, I disagree with Dave about that puzzle being the hardest in the game!  It's a puzzle that either clicks with you or doesn't.  It's definitely one that might resonate (pun not intended) with Myst/Riven fans who like more mechanical puzzles.  There are a few like this in the game.  Some, like that one, are optional.  And some, I feel, are harder!  Lot's more to come!!! Fuse box.
Spoiler
The fuse box puzzle is one of those best served by writing down the voltages of the nodes until you find the ones that add up to what you need, so it's a bit more 'traditional' in the sense that brute forcing it generally won't work and you have to write down your results.

This is the credits song, with cutscenes from the game itself, featuring Louiza Sofianopoulou in my studio, and myself playing the piano and the guitar!

All music and production by me.
Vocals by Louiza Sofianopoulou
Lyrics by me and Louiza
Mastering by Odeon Mastering.

This is the only pop song in the game, but there's quite a few other surprises to the soundtrack alone! ;)

Congratulations, Nikolas (& Luiza), on creating this jaw-dropping piece and one of the most haunting and beautiful
tracks I've ever heard in a game.
This song seems to take your emotional state of mind and all your thoughts right at the end of Resonance and catalyse
both to a totally new level.

Resonance is released! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=46256.new#new)
(or will be in just a few hours.)

Darth... do your thing!

Been a long time comin'...

Congratulations Vince, Nikolas and Dave (and anybody else involved that I didn't mention)!!

I feel a sadness in having to lock this!  It's been a GiP staple for over 4 years!  But happy in that the lock is only because of its release!!
