Title: An update on graphics
Post by: Renegade Implementor on Mon 02/03/2009 04:06:17
As the death of our previous forum killed the last progress report, here it is again:

Work is continuing on the newer Krysis-style of backgrounds and characters.  There are a number of characters (which can be seen here (http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/art-rotn/090513-ready4anm.png)) that are considered ready enough to start the animation process.

If anyone fancies taking a pop at giving any of these characters a walk/talk cycle, then feel free to dive right in.

I wouldnt mind having a wee crack at making some animations.  What I was wondering thou, is there any particular conventions that should be followed?  For example is there a certain amount of frames that you would like to see in a walk cycle?  What about talking animations is it to be lip sync or general animation?

It may be a good idea to call which characters we are going to animate, so that there isnt to many people all making Davy Jones as the same time.

Post by: DeviantGent on Sun 15/03/2009 01:21:59
No real conventions or limits. I think the hope is that with several walking/talking animations done, that will then create a template that can be then applied to the other characters. I would say just go with what looks good and can transfer to others.

Announcing which characters might be a good idea though.

Ok well I'm calling Bill Cosby then.  I do have a question regarding him.  I havent played much RON unfortunatly.  Is he dead?  Should he walk normally or Zombiefied?

I'd definitely love to try and make some characters that people would want to use.

Post by: DeviantGent on Thu 19/03/2009 12:45:07
Awesome. I recommend taking a crack at a couple of the most used ones - Davy Jones, Max Griff, Mika etc. If we can get a few of these with a good solid walk/talk cycle, then we'll have a template which we can use for getting the others done in doublequicktime.

Ok Ive done some walkcycles for Bill Cosby. (Incedently now Ive played some RON I wish I had chosen a more usefull character.)

Anyway heres a teaser (http://www.mind-winder.com/gallery/BillCosbyWalk_Side.gif)

Ive done up and down as well.  What would be the best format to save it as?  Does it need to be indexed or left RGB?  Would it be best to save each image individually or in one big file?

Sorry about all the questions I have noticed that my way isnt always the way people more familiar with AGS do things thou.

Oh and the sideways animation needed another colour to look right.

Could anybody tell me which of the characters is Phil Nihilist? I was thinking about refining the original version but if he's already done, there's obviously no point in doing so.

Another thing that struck my mind recently is whether the new Ron graphics should be made for 320x200/240 or 640x400/480. (On some hardware(?)) Windows (Vista(?)) doesn't support 320xN anymore (although Linux still does), and with AGS 3.1 the option to double the intended resolution is gone. But yet all available ressources - including the new character sprites you posted - have been made for a resolution of 320x200/240.

I don't think that is a good idea since it encourages newbies (like myself) to use everything "as is" and then create a game that has major compatibility issues.
A simple solution could be to just resize everything by a factor of 2. This would keep ye olde dos charme and assure compatibility for the next few years (hopefully). I bet this has already been discussed at length, but since the old forum's dead I decided to mention it.

The majority of side views in that image bother me. They're all a bit too straight and narrow. The fronts and backs are excellent though.

I don't know which one's Phil. Look for someone with one eye bigger than the other.

EDIT: I took a crack at the Michael Gower walkcycle. It isn't fantastic. Obviously he'd need a separate walkcycle for walking left, (grr how dare he be asymmetrical!).

(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a364/hudders/nog/AGS/Michael_Gower_Walking.gif) (http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a364/hudders/nog/AGS/Michael_Gower_Walking.gif)

I don't know where that black line has come from. Something to do with scaling I think.

They're much better than the first pass, believe me.  No, they're not perfect and there things that still bug me, but they're at least presentable.

I suppose now's a good as time to make an open call: If anyone is willing and wants to improve/adjust these then please feel free.  If people want incentives, we can offer to name a major landmark (a new location or something nameless like the Park) after the artist(s) in question.  It's either that or internet cake, your choice.  :)

The only version of Phil is in the second row, third from the left in his Llama-man costume.  I can dig up the first draft sprites but they're very crude.

I've updated the ready for animation sheet, (which can be seen here) (http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/art-rotn/090513-ready4anm.png) to include character names.

I'm also putting up the rest of the cast who are stuck in 1st draft status.  These characters, which can be seen here (http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/art-rotn/090516-cast-pass1.png), need improvements before they can be ready for animating.

If anyone wants to take a crack at animating a character for the 1st group, or improve a character from the 2nd batch, please feel free.  Just say which character you're working on so people know the character is being handled.

I like this new uniform way of making the sprites. A few years ago I made some of them in Poser and tried to make some backgrounds in a 3d drawing program, but after a computer crash, I lost most of them. I'd like to try animating Davy, he was my favorite character. After that, I'd like to try animating Max.
Title: Re: An update on graphics

The Punk Allen I made earlier fits more or less within the dimensions of Krysis' sprites and is already fully animated.  You're welcome to use him if you like :).  He's rather lonely on my hard drive with no one to bash on.

He doesn't have an idle animation for the other directions but that would be easy to fix.  Also, as I've said before, any character I redesign I would be willing to make additional animations for upon request to maintain consistency.

Don't worry about the colours, I'll make the necessary corrections as I prep these for a resource pack.

Part of me wants to ask that you do more.  The other, more power-corrupt part of my admin-psyche is simply contemplating putting you under a geas. :)

Bloody hell. Now this is a public service you are doing and no mistake. I don't suppose you could see your way to doing Elandra in your next batch, do you? Only with her done (and the other walk cycles), then that is me sorted spritewise and potentially could have me done in a matter of weeks as opposed to months.

If you fancy some feedback for your down walk cycles, then I would recommend taking them over to the Critics Lounge. Some really hoopy froods hang out there and would be more than happy to not only give you some tips, but also tweak them slightly for that special shinyness.

Also, two new games utilising Sam Salmon... bet JudgeDeadd never envisioned this when he did Disappearence Time. Hope he's watching and feeling proud of himself.

Right, a resource pack has been made & is on the site.  I took a quick moment and centered the headers on a few things, so they stand out which should make finding a particular section easier.  Anyway, the file is "res-char-nwkrysprites-090821" and is in the Characters - sprites section.

Nice work. Here's a slightly modified version of that Elandra. I can't wrap my head around how the coat's suppose to move with the leg, so that's about the best you'll get out of me. It's almost worth what you paid to get it. As for Elandra's giant bust, (are all of Reality's females going to join Mika's fate?) I can't help with that. I'm an ass-man, so yeah. Maybe I can help better with her up walk.

Brentimous, good to hear from you.  Where've you been... seriously, where have you been?! :)

QuoteAs for Elandra's giant bust,

You had ample opportunity to adjust things when you had the sprites in your possession.

Scruff, nice work, although I think the sideways arm movement doesn't successfully match the arm movements in the down view.  As you're having trouble with the program you're using, have you tried other programs?  I'm using Beneton Movie Gif and found it works well and it's free.

Fixed the colors, redid the arms, and made some slight adjustments to the legs. Nice work on the coat. Only the walk-up and talk animations need to be made for her to be completely finished. I think she'd then be the first Krysis sprite to ever actually be fully animated.

Quoteseriously, where have you been?!

Hell if I know. I was hoping you'd have that answer.

I think you're making good progress here!  Davy's side walk animation in particular is pretty solid aside from what appears to be one frame wehre his arm jerks back.  The other directions could use more of the effort you put into this one, but with all the characters you seem to be including in your game it definitely comes down to a matter of quantity vs. quality, so my virtual hat is off to you for your effort here!

The file referenced was compiled on the Aug 21st, Scruff posted Davy & Elandra on the 24th.  Unless there was a TARDIS involved, they wouldn't be in the zip file.

Now that life has settled down, I can get caught up on a few housekeeping issues.  If someone wants to take a crack at getting a few more animations done - say Elandra's up walk or taking a look at Davy's up walk (it looks like he's walking down backwards to me), or one of the other characters before things go into the new resource pack, that would be greatly appreciated.

Either way, expect things to be bundled together in a new zip file next Saturday.

After getting a template walk cycle hashed out (thanks to all who responded in the critics lounge), I went about applying it a bunch of characters.  Long story short... there is a NEW .cha character resource file on the RoN site that contains about 20 or so characters in Krysis' style that have full walk & talk animations.

Progress has been made!

In the last half-year the following characters have been fully animated (walking & talking) using the walking template:

They're available in two packs, a .cha pack & a collection of .png sprites.  There's also been an update to the inventory & objects resource pack as well as an update to the Krysis style backgrounds pack which contains a few new backgrounds (such as Dominatrix Pizza).  All resource packs are available for download at the RoN site.

As always, if anyone sees room for improvement & wants to alter background or character sprites, please do.

The following 4 characters (in Krysis style) have been fully animated with walking & talking animations: The Reality High School Janitor, PC Leon Evans, Biggs, and Vicks (see accompanying pic).  They've been added to a new Krysis style cha pack which can be found on the RoN site.

Well, no pets this time, but here's a bunch of folks who have been recently completed, added to the .cha bundle and uploaded to the site.

Don't knock the pet thing, people. My dog is very impressed with everything I do. And I can only assume that he would also be impressed with any RON game I made. Therefore, it can be easily extrapolated that CosmoQueen's pet would be just as impressed if she made a RON game. It's science, obviously.

Also, hey it's Esmarilda!  :cheesy: Nice work, RI.

Krysis, good to hear from you again.

Here's the next batch, finally got Allen finished.  Still no pets though.

Maybe for the nudist Guido, someone could put a censor bar or a fig leaf on his no-no spot.  :P  Hee hee!

Actually, Guido does exist when a censor bar but I'm unhappy with how the sprites look.

Here's the latest group who have been finished.

The latest batch of characters is done and uploaded to the RoN site in it's convenient .cha pack (updated the Krysis style backgrounds & char sprites packs as well).

There's a light at the end of the tunnel.  By my count there's about 20 characters (who've already appeared in a RoN) left to get animated.

So are you doing every single character, no matter how small a part they play?
Title: Re: An update on graphics
Post by: Renegade Implementor on Wed 19/06/2013 18:48:14
Pretty much.  Just because a character has only been used once, doesn't mean they should be excluded from being updated to the Krysis-style graphics.

And I forgot about the animals, so it's under 30 who still need to be finished.

You've been doing this four years going by the first post of this topic!
My hat's off to ya!

I'd like to see Alec Spherguson in the next update, I can see that one testing your skills!

Okay, here's the next batch of 5 characters done.  All nicely animated, pack up and available for download on the RoN site.
Wolf, as you can see Alec is in this batch.  He may not have a spring in his step but he has a bounce. :)

He should get some kind of special title or acknowledgement on his profile.

I agree (nod). RI should be more credited/titled/acknowledged.

I will accept cash :-D.

Here's the next batch of added characters.  The updated .cha pack can be downloaded from the RoN site.

There's one way you can earn cash. Legalize all the RON resources to use in a commercial game only for me and once people start buying the game, I'll send you half of the profits. But ssshh, don't tell anyone about that. Let's keep it private. ;)

The new batch of characters looks good. Especially, I like the way Hank Dolby is designed. Thanks to you, it'll take me less time to convert him into a detective (I know there's already a one but I want to introduce another detective to RON world). :)

So what's the plan after you've finished all these characters RI?
What will you do?!
Retirement? Suicide? Diagonal walk cycles?!

When this is all over?  Probably be glad it's finally finished.  Of course, there's still the animals and I'll most likely need help with those.

Next four are done and uploaded on the site.  I've updated the character sprites pack as well.

Lassi & Roger come from the Lassi Quest series.

That is it, it's done.  It's complete!  All humanoid characters have been converted to the Krysis style.  This lack pack includes:

[imgzoom]http://imageshack.us/a/img842/6988/qulg.png[/imgzoom]

Many thanks to Oldschool_wolf for helping get Guido mocked up and finished.  When you download the packs, you'll find three versions of Guido: naked, thong, and censored.

I've updated and uploaded the .cha & sprite packs (along with updated Krysis-style backgrounds) up to the site.

The animal characters still need work and if anyone is willing and able to help out, send me a pm and we'll discuss the subject further.

Funny I was looking for sprites for an AGS game and the image I found brought me right back here. I'm finishing up a game I'm making for a friend as a surprise and need a walk cycle for a female character for the very last scene would it be alright to modify the one for Mika character? It looks almost like the person I'm basing it on, it's not commercial and the character is not playable. Hopefully it's ok but I always like to check first I will save me time and get it done. I'll also put a mention in the game for the artist.

@festilligambe: I think if you just thank "the Reality on the Norm community" you will be fine.
A link to the website ( http://realityonthenorm.info ) would be a good idea too!
