...What?
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 22 Oct 2011, 05:51
...What?

We're having a bake sale. The AGS Bake Sale to be exact.

In mid to late December, just before Christmas, a bunch of us are going to release a bundle of games under a "pay what you like" model. The money raised from the bake sale will be going to a good cause: buying a new server for the AGS community.

What's not to love?  :D

(Members of the bake sale will be revealed as they unveil their games in the Games In Production thread over the next few days).

I'm guessing we have to use AGS to make the games if we want to participate in this?

Or is it only for the, 'BEST OF THE BEST' people?

If by "best of the best" you mean "I really, really want to make a game for this event and can have it in by December 15th or so" then, yeah, we're a pretty exclusive group!

When you post your game in the "Games in Production" forum, please include the "BAKE SALE" tag in the title. (And please only announce a game for the bake sale if you're fairly certain you will actually be able make a complete game by the deadline.)

Aye, the extent of our elitism is "Will be willing to donate a game to a fund-raiser from which all proceeds are intended to be spent on an AGS server" and "Will be able to complete this game by around the middle of December".

If you've any questions, PM Ponch or myself. Or both of us.  :)

Ah yes, good points. Smart man to point out the bit about the money raised. I'm glad someone with some sense is making sure things run smoothly behind the scenes. Whoever put you in charge made a good decision to let you make as many decisions as possible. Smart thinking!  8)

And, above all else, make sure it complies with the forum rules!!  </sith>

Glad to see you guys finally announce the secret... I can finally take off these leather pants and get back to wearing speedos like normal people do.

Let me know when you want to make that sticky thread we discussed (if you still want) and we'll get it done!

What a great idea.  I'll keep my wallet ready.
What's the story behind the AGS server?
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 22 Oct 2011, 07:35
Darth: Launch the sticky thread when you're ready to do so. As this thing grows in size, it will be invaluable in helping people keep track of all the games being made for the bake sale. Thanks!  :D

Kodiak: Thanks for your support. The story behind the server is we need a new one. For the longest time, we've talked about a new design for the front page. A lot of work was even done towards that end, but ultimately nothing came of it. The bake sale may be the impetus to get that back on track. Also there have been issues regarding uptime and various forum functions not quite working as they should. We hope to raise both the cash and the interest needed to address those issues and make this community an even awesome-r place to be on the interwebs. :)

I'm a little gutted there's been a super secret AGS group for the elite members  :'(

Beautiful games guys and a very worthwhile cause!

Very true! I knew who the members of the original Baker's Dozen* were, but I had no idea what any of them were working on. Watching these people trot out screenshots from the games they've been working on for the last month is really cool. There are some really great ideas for games in this secret society -- and also another Barn Runner game!  :=

I hope lots of you guys are following Frodo's example and starting a piggy bank fund. This "pay what you like" pricing scheme depends a lot on you guys deciding that "one shiny penny should do" is the wrong attitude and ponying up a bit more than that.  ;)

Lastly, I expect to see Ghost's character on page three any week now. Although I'm not sure that's necessary. If you look at the screenshots, you've already seen every thing page three would have to offer. :D

Thanks for the outpouring of support so far, guys!  ;D

Sadness? Don't be silly! This is a time for rejoicing! And, Snake, did you know that the AGS Bake Sale is open to all members of the AGS Community!

Why, even a longtime member in good standing such as yourself can join. All you have to do is get a game together by the middle of December. Heck, I think you should do that very thing! And this would be a great thread to recruit a little help if you don't think you'll be able to finish in time on your own!

That's a great idea you just had there, Snakey, old boy!

Anybody here want to volunteer to help Snake with a game? Just raise your hands! Don't be shy now!

I look forward to seeing what a venerable, nigh legendary AGSer like yourself can come up with, Snake. I do indeed!

These are exciting times in which we live, people. Very exciting!  :D

Armageddon: You've got about two months to get one together for the bake sale. That's like two MAGS! Or eight OROWs! Plenty of time, if you ask me.  ;)

Snarky: We're looking to raise as much as we can. Whatever is left over after we buy the server will go towards the future of the AGS Engine itself (which is a secret I'm not sure I can talk about just yet).  :)  Trust me, great things are afoot in the land of AGS, sir!

If I'd known about this a bit earlier I might have been able to contribue with a side-project I've been whiteboxing out for funsies, but 2 months would be a bit on the short side for this one. At least for something I'd expect anyone to spend any hard-earned money on. I'm excited to see what you guys are up to, though! Great initiative to open more people's eyes to AGS :)

Well you're in luck, my good man. As Ben304 has been PMing me about all day, apparently we live in a world of wonders filled with skypes, twitters, and other such amazing whatnots. I've been told that thanks to this fabulous world of tomorrow, you can order your baked goods from anywhere in the world and they'll arrive fresh and hot from our ovens to your door! Apparently it involves shoving them through a series of tubes or something. I'm not very clear on it myself, but Ben assures me that this sort of thing will be all the rage soon. Who knows, some day soon I might even give up sending messages via the telegraph and get with the skype-o-grams that he keeps going on about!  :)

Astonishing! Amazing! What wonders have passed me by in my cave in the mountains! :o Time then to retire the old smoke signals!

Seriously though, I don't feel secure making payments over hotel connections (which in themselves are not terribly reliable, in my experience) so I'll probably just check them out, and then buy them when I get back. This will depend on how long the sale lasts, I guess.

LimpingFish: I saw AdventureX, but as it happens I'm flying AFTER that. :(

Suit up, Darth! You have more than enough time to make a small one or two room game and still rule the Games In Progress forum with an iron fist! Put those leather pants on, Darth!

Hell, I still haven't taken mine off. That will be my Christmas gift to myself (and Kim) -- finally taking off these stinky pants once the bake sale is successfully behind us. But not one moment sooner!  8)

Ok, before I go whole-hog on this, I'd like to get your opinions.

I'm definitely not one of the "AGS big boys", nor would I want to take down the epic quality bar set by the great game makers of the forums, but I'd love to participate with something.

At first, I wanted to make a text-adventure game like the one I did for OROW, Procrastinator, only better, of course.  Then my thoughts shifted to an old idea I had: a text-mode shoot 'em up inspired by '90s DOS action games. So I made this prototype:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1QgfQDbnsY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1QgfQDbnsY)

Before I'm at a level of a GiP thread, would you guys be interested in playing a text-mode action game? Would you want it in the bake sale? (Of course, after I put in all the elements I want and actually make it a game - i.e. randomly generated levels, power-ups, music, actual backgrounds, etc.)

Of course, the game is NOT text-mode, but it's at least inspired from that - this would solve numerous problems for me, including having to do artwork, and I really like the vibe it gives off.

I know that showing a very, very basic prototype concocted in 4 hours isn't much to base a judgement on, but should I continue working on this in the hopes of getting it in the bake sale?

Thanks for reading and watching, and hopefully replying! :)

As a great fan of DoomRL, I'd say go for it! The sale so far has already so many rather unusual setups and looks, and your idea sounds pretty unique too. Even if you DON'T enter the bake sale with it, MAKE that game!

(Of course, after I put in all the elements I want and actually make it a game - i.e. randomly generated levels, power-ups, music, actual backgrounds, etc.)

Hell yes, you should! I'll be personally offended if this game isn't in the bake sale!  :D

If you have any questions, either post them here or PM Ben304 or myself. I'm already looking forward to blasting the hell out of the other letters of the alphabet.

You think that's embarrassing? Try hitting the "enter" key instead of the "shift" key while trying to put that capital T in "Tier" and the next thing you know, you've sent a PM to only half the people you meant to and now you have to wait an entire hour to send it to the rest!

Truly. There has to be an easier way to do this than that. Do you have a better suggestion?

I wonder if Tzachs could set up a small, private forum for the baker's dozen over at Parking Goat where we can hash this sort of stuff out more efficiently? He's one of the bakers and he has his own forums. That might be the solution to our problem.

Woah, woah, woah, thanks, everyone! I'm really happy and glad that you liked my idea and that you want it in the bake sale! However, this raises the following problem: this will definitely not be a PG-13 game, especially because of... well... you know, violence and satanism and all that good stuff that made '90s shooters so fun to play!

If this isn't a problem, then it seems...

Hell is coming to the bake sale! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0pM7wVMym0)

Shotgun, check. Zombies, check. Pixel blood, check... INSTANT CLASSIC!

I wouldn't mind the non-PG, by the way. I worried a lot about that too. Seems the forums are mature in that respect, and you have to be a certain age to use PayPal anyway. Chances are good that most buyers have seen worse than a dismembered "Z" (even a capital one).

Hey, thanks, Ghost! I guess you're right, maybe I'm worrying too much.

The sound effects I made using a chiptune VST called "magical8bitplug" in Fruity Loops - really simple to use and sounds great. For the zombie growl, I just put in a phaser over one of those chiptune synths. The sound effects seem to be gathering quite a following, glad you like 'em ;D

Sure. Just so long as you answer yes to these three questions:

1) "Do you pinky swear that you can have the game done by mid December?"

2) "Will you be willing to donate said game (temporarily) to a fund-raiser from which all proceeds are intended to be spent on an AGS server"

3) This is an official, grown up endeavor, involving money and everything. Are you at least the age of 18?

If you can handle that level of responsibility, then yes. Welcome aboard.

I am going to start building a prototype for the spiritual sequel to PMQs: the Game over the next few days and if that goes well I'll be contacting the bakers about joining in :D

The hope is to draw some more - and different - press attention to the community and AGS in general.

You'll bring the kind of respectability and class that our group sorely needs, what with the sort of scruffy ne'er do wells we have working in our kitchen. I'm not pointing any fingers, mind you. But I' was looking directly at Snake and Dualnames when I typed that, so I think you get my drift. ;)

Edit: And with that, I think I'm going to log out for the night. It's been a long couple of days and I thank everyone for all the support they shown us since we announced the bake sale. Seriously, you guys are the best community on the intertubes!  :D  G'night!

We'd love to have you on board, Monkey.

But just a few points up front:

1) The game must be completed by mid-December to be included in the bundle.
2) You have to agree that the money raised will go to buying a new server and not spent on hookers and cocaine.
3) The game must be suitable to be sold. No copyright infringements, no MP3s, use OGG instead, and all that stuff.
4) The games need to be as polished as possible, so have it play tested and checked for typos, and so forth.

If you're man monkey enough for that challenge, then welcome aboard!  :D

Greetings.

I have been watching this with great interest and have started a project that I hope will be accepted into the bake sale. I have a pretty solid plan in place and things are going along smoothly.

Only thing is, the main character is a dickman. This is the spiritual successor to the 'classic' Dickboy game.

Will having an anthropomorphic penis character be a problem with any of the bakers dozen?

Ps grundislav approves.

Guys, you're awesome  :)

I love the thought behind this, and I love how many people are participating.

And I'm sorry that in recent years I just haven't had the time that I'd like to dedicate to AGS.

Agreed, the new website needs to be launched. It's been 90%-done for about a year now, I just haven't had the time to finish it off. Money wouldn't help with that, it needs me (or somebody else) to have the time to finish coding it.

The forums have been a bit unreliable on occasion. But as far as I know, there's nothing wrong with the server. Occasionally the database gets corrupted for whatever reason, and I have to log in and run a repair operation on it, then the forums start working again.

This isn't due to lack of money or a cheap server, it's just due to me not being available to react immediately when the database goes down -- the same would happen if we had a 32-core multi-xeon-terahertz machine.

So actually I think what we need is people, not cash. For example, I should appoint a deputy with full server access who can go in and fix it when it breaks. But it needs to be somebody who is very familiar with the server applications and knows how it all works -- because it's so easy for somebody inexperienced to mean well but end up accidentally breaking everything.

I should also appoint a deputy to finish the new website (or open-source it). But the problem with this is that it requires a copy of the DB to be able to work on it, and I would need to spend time taking a DB backup and cleaning it up (eg. removing private data like PM's) before making it public.

So by all means, please do continue with the Bake Sale. But perhaps we can come up with another way in which the money raised could go towards buying something for the community that people would like.

Server admin stuff is not my area of expertise!  Not only that but my biggest problem (the reason I'm not making a game for the bake sale) is free time!  I have none these days it seems.

But I do love the idea of deputies ... giving somebody else a modicum of control to prevent bottle necks when Chris isn't available!

I wouldn't mind being involved in the website revamp part though ... even if just a small part :)

Guys, you're awesome  :)

Hooray! Somebody found the pub where Chris was sleeping it off. \o/

Thanks, CJ. I'm glad you didn't shut us down out of hand -- it was a concern. After all you've done for us, this was the least we could do for you. And we were certain that you were using an old Vic-20 as a server, so a new server seemed the obvious thing.

However, if that isn't the case, then what do we do with the money raised?

I can think of only one thing to do at the moment:

We extend the time to work on the AGS Bake Sale to January 1st. That will give everyone a little more time to work on their games and enjoy the holidays while we come up with a new way to save the world.

What do you think, guys? Good idea? Or good-est idea ever?  :=

Only if the other bakers think we should. I'm sure a good case could be made for bumping the deadline back a few weeks, for several perfectly valid reasons. But if you're just dying to get your game out the door in six weeks instead of eight, we could always do that instead.

I'm all for letting the bakers decide.

There's no new goal set yet.  But I'm sure it's just a temporary state and the money won't be lost.

If it will be something for AGS, it could be for instance paying to create features for new AGS versions.

Too early to tell. CJ says he doesn't need a new server, that the 486 DX2 he's got is just fine ;-)

So we'll have to look for a new goal. AGS related, I hope. Or maybe we can raise some money for a worth charity and donate it in the name of the AGS Community or something.

This calls for a secret meeting! Bakers! To the PM box!  :=

I'm terribly jealous that nobody invited me to be part of this secret society. :-\

Also, if we just gave the games away, I'm with Ghost, that would just be a Winterlease Something!. I mean a Summerlease Something and a Winterlease Something wouldn't be a horrible idea I think so long as they didn't become so frequent as to defeat the purpose and destroy the submission base.

But this Bake Sale is a good idea. Let's not toy with that. We'll figure out where the funds go when we figure out where they're needed, but the sale must go on! I'd actually propose we make this like a bi-annual thing. Annual might be too frequent for this particular event. Maybe not. Or maybe. Or...maybe not.

Yes, well, uhm - I remember that Dave Gilbert mentioned somewhere that, if there was some money left after paying the server,  maybe the team of courageous bakers would pay somebody to program an Android Linux / iDevices port of AGS, or rather of the runtime engine. I must admit, I like that idea a lot. Ports for Mac and Linux have been toyed around with on and off during the last couple of years, and nothing really working ever came of it, due to lack of time, motivation, coding complications etc. - I think portable devices are the perfect platform for AGS, and I guess many of us would like to see their games on one of them. For those of us who are considering or already practising commercial game development (= Dave Gilbert and, uhm...his friends?), being able to export their games to one of those things could really help a lot.

And/or maybe we could donate some of the money to clarvalon and/or Denzil Quixode who have already made some significant steps towards AGS portability towards XBOX (Personally, I never liked consoles + point&click, but maybe that's just me, and then there was this Silverlight thingy also) or HTML5.

Also, I have no idea if it is possible to somehow join all those efforts into one project that is funded exclusively by delicious digital cookies...but maybe it is?

Quote from: pumaman
So actually I think what we need is people, not cash. For example, I should appoint a deputy with full server access who can go in and fix it when it breaks. But it needs to be somebody who is very familiar with the server applications and knows how it all works -- because it's so easy for somebody inexperienced to mean well but end up accidentally breaking everything.

I should also appoint a deputy to finish the new website (or open-source it). But the problem with this is that it requires a copy of the DB to be able to work on it, and I would need to spend time taking a DB backup and cleaning it up (eg. removing private data like PM's) before making it public.

I see this hasn't really been addressed by anyone still, and it was our main initiative for setting up the bake sale, so I'd like to discuss this issue.

How hard is it to appoint a deputy? Do we have many people around here that you trust and can do this sort of thing? Calin has mentioned that he may be able to help, so we have one candidate, is there anyone else?

It'd be a great help if we could have someone in this capacity that has more time than Chris and is knowledgeable about such things.

In terms of the website, I know we have plenty of accomplished website coders and designers around these parts. Is anyone willing to take the reigns of this project? Is cleaning up the DB and backing it up an unfeasibly large task for you, Chris? Are you uncomfortable with the notion of deleting everyone's stored Personal Messages?

What about the option of a third party server? The option exists, is this feasible? Are you willing to consider such an option or would you prefer not to? If money is an issue then hopefully we could help out in this capacity.

Now that we have this information, it'd be great to know how we can use it. If there is something we can help out with a little bit of money from a bake sale, then it ought to be suggested to us! If not, let's see if we can find some people to help out!

maybe the team of courageous bakers would pay somebody to program an Android Linux / iDevices port of AGS, or rather of the runtime engine. I must admit, I like that idea a lot. Ports for Mac and Linux have been toyed around with on and off during the last couple of years,

I think that's a great idea. I would love for AGS to have solid Linux, Mac and iPhone support.
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: ThreeOhFour on 25 Oct 2011, 11:16
Aye, this would be a great step for AGS.

Our issue, however, is feasibility. There's no set figure on how much this will cost, which I imagine will be a fair amount of money or somebody with the skill would've looked at this already, there's no certainty on how much we will raise from the event we're trying to organize and not all of the people who signed up to the Bake Sale support the idea, which is fair enough - we recruited them with requests to help us raise money for a server initially, not porting the engine.

Still, a Mac port is something that we're very strongly considering - it is important, however, that we look at all of our options and consider how realistic any of them are for this event. I'd love to make games for iPhone/iPad and even gave away source code for some of my games to somebody who was attempting to port them - and as far as I've heard nothing has come of this. I've also shared source code with people who have expressed an interest in doing an Android port and again, nothing has come of it.

This is definitely something to keep in mind for AGS at some point, though, whether from this event or for a later date - I just don't know how feasible it is for us to support such a thing with this particular event.

I've been pushin' my agenda over in the bat/cow/goat-cave so I'll mention it here to (though I agree we should wait for Chris to weigh in here);

My thoughts are to make the (admittedly huge) effort to enable AGS to export games to HTML5/javascript.  This would enable the games to be played on ALL platforms (including iOS (iPhone/Pads) and Linux as well) as long as that platform has a modern HTML5 compatible web-browser.

It would be a lot of work, sure, but it would essentially give AGS games to the world :)

Well there are plenty of people willing to program and porting the engine but the main issue is not their lack of motivation but the fact there isn't a leader type of guy pushing people and keeping a clear goal. I don't think hiring coders is going to fix this. See this topic (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=44230.0) for the latest instalment on what the hell we should do. :P

I think that money is better spent on different things imho.

Just out of curiosity; it's probably been addressed already, I just don't feel like rereading this thread again.
If a game is released for this bake sale package, how long will it be until the game can be released for free? Or is it only allowed to be obtained though this bake sale package with a pay-what-you-want fee?
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 25 Oct 2011, 19:07
The thinking is that the game you offer up will be part of the bake sale bundle and squirreled away for a year to give people an incentive to buy the games during the sale and not just wait patiently for a month for the sale to end and then get them for free instead of helping us to raise money.

After the year has passed, we hold a new bake sale for another worthy cause and once the second bake sale is over,  you'll get your old game from the first bake sale back to do what you want with it.

I hope that sounds fair to everyone.  :)
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale

That's currently discussed, but we're pretty clear that it would be unfair to customers to make it a quick thing. One idea is to make regular bake sales, and making the "old" bundle free a bit after the "new" one started.

There you go again, bringing common sense and practical advice into this again. Stop that! ;) One giant step at a time, Ascovel. There will always be worthy causes to raise money for, right? Right! So let us dream of next year's bake sale while working on this one. And if that second bake sale never materializes (which would be a tragedy), then after a year or so, everyone gets to do what they want with their games. How does that sound?

Can't say it has happened before, but I do enjoy coming across forum threads where my name is put forward as a potential recipient of money :)

In all seriousness, as Ben mentioned there may be more immediate & worthwhile causes to be raising money for.  I have however recently been discussing eschewing the license model in favour of crowdfunding, so it's an idea I'm open to in future.

As Mark knows, over the last few months I've been re-writing the scripting system in XAGE to use pure C# rather than XML.  As a main focus has become porting AGS games, I've written an interface to the engine based entirely on the AGS scripting language, of which 20% of all properties and methods exposed have already been implemented (28% if you exclude functions marked as obsolete):  http://www.clarvalon.com/XAGE/XageProgress.png (http://www.clarvalon.com/XAGE/XageProgress.png)

Inevitably this means the two engines have converged further still, though under the hood they're quite different beasts.

Haha yes on the surface that is excellent!  However it's in opposition to why the Bake Sale was started in the first place!  We wanted to do something for the betterment of the community and we want to stick to that initiative!  Not a bad idea, just not the "vibe" we were looking for :)

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale

But then it's not a bake sale anymore, but rather a flea market. I think, once we have managed to pull something like the bake sale off successfully, we will of course have incredible synergy effects, dissemination of highly specialized web 2.0 knowledge like "how do I setup a PayPal account" or "Should I sell 100 games at $100 each or rather 1000 games at $10 each" all throughout the participating community and so forth. Which means: I'm against the Humble Bundle style sale, because it takes away the pastry (unless it's a Humble Pie Bundle, I'm all for that).

edit: = what Darth said, but in a more convoluted and less efficient way.

I'm all for a "humble blue cup bundle"* or something down the road. But at the moment, this is all about helping the AGS community and not for personal gain.

Let's focus on having the bake sale, then we can throw bucket loads of money at CJ or Peder or whoever, improve the AGS engine (either with new features or a proper port), and buy a Russian bride for someone. Monkey_05_06, are you lonely? Ghost? Dualnames? Who needs a new bride?  ;)

So AGS community betterment is about everything and anything except indie game devs taking game development seriously and getting rewarded for doing so? That doesn't count as helping the AGS community at all? Are you sure?

I kind of am. Definitely affiliated. Definitely would claim my part if the devs would to divide the profit. But yeah, you're welcome.
Wanting to roleplay heroes is a fair enough goal I guess.

and not for personal gain.
I don't think encouraging developers make games and helping them doing so is all that selfish. I of course look positively towards spending resources on any improvements of the AGS experience, which AGS needs badly if you look from some angles, but I most certainly cannot understand the notion of excluding and shunning supporting the developers out of these positive goals.

Let's focus on having the bake sale, then we can throw bucket loads of money at CJ or Peder or whoever, improve the AGS engine (either with new features or a proper port)

That's now how I meant that, Nemo. Sorry if it came across the wrong way.  :'(

The original point of putting together the bake sale was to be a charity event. And that's still the goal. If we want to do something else down the road, something more profit driven, that's fine. But the bake sale was to be a fundraiser to help the AGS community, and that's still very much what I'd like to do with it.  :)

Well, ok, fair enough, but that still doesn't address my point about that helping developers themselves is supporting their community?

And I haven't even used the argument of that to make a quality engine you have to put it in active use sometimes so advancing the engine and developing with it may turn out to be most effectively done simultaneously.

But sure, if the point is charity for the sake of charity... as you wish, ladies and gentlemen.

I think what they're getting at isn't that giving developers some financial incentive is obviously a viable method of enticing people, this particular event was organized with the goal of charitably benefiting the community (in that no sole individual or group would have actual personal (financial) gain). I've still yet to be formally invited inside their secret hideout, so I could be totally wrong, but the concept makes sense to me. What you're saying makes sense too, but I think it's just not what this particular sale was organized for. Maybe a future bake sale would be something more like what you were discussing, just this (specific) one wasn't.

Anyway, I have an idea what I want to do for my bake sale game. I need someone to convince Ben304 to do the graphics for me though. :D

Also I've been secretly working on a logo for MonkeyMoto Productions, Inc., and I'd really like to debut it in my bake sale game.
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 25 Oct 2011, 23:58
An idea that being tossed around right now is something like this: We host the bake sale for a month and all the games go into one bundle. All the money raised from the sale goes into the charity bowl. Once the bake sale is over, maybe the individual games go on sale separately and each author gets whatever money his game makes in sales for the next year, or until after the next bake sale (assuming there is one). After that, the game reverts to the owner and they can either keep it up for sale or take it home and stick it in their sock drawer or whatever it is you do with your games.

It's just a thought, but that might help put everyone's mind at ease.  :-\

Here are my irrelevant, non-baker thoughts on the subject:

Bake Sale as a charity event is a wonderful, simple and graceful project. It represents everything what's great about the indie-development community in general and AGS forums in particular. And while I'm not in any way against the idea of those participating getting some money from it, it certainly seems like it would ruin some of the feel-good vibe of the whole thing.

It feels better as a community event, and not as an AGS Festival (although that sounds good too :)).

As for supporting the developers - how about small money prizes for AGS-Awards? Although I feel that money can ruin anything.
Except for charity, of course. ;)

You know, if I think about the past year and what money exchanges there have been there are a few things an 'AGS fund' could come in handy for. Be it natural disasters (that might also have hurt members of the community) like floods in Australia, earthquakes in Japan; or members in acute financial difficulties (that has happened more then once); or maybe events like mittens for folks who really want to go but just don't have the money. I think there are all sorts of possibilities that benefit the community without creating tensions like prize money would give.

I liked the original idea. It was simple. It had a point. It had a goal. More importantly, everybody was psyched about it, which is a rarity these days.

Instead of firing off ideas about what we're going to do with all the cash, which we don't actually have yet, let's just continue on, as someone said earlier, as if nothing has changed:

1. A bake sale is going to happen.
2. Monies will be raised.
3. Something good will be done with said monies.

Can we all at least agree on that? This is a generous thing these people have agreed to do, off their own backs, for the betterment of the community. Will it work? Who knows? Personally, I going to enjoy finding out. Adventure! Virgin territory!

Forge ahead!
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale [ddq's open letter]
Post by: ddq on 26 Oct 2011, 02:09
Now, I'm going to be frank here. I can't say I approve of the direction this is going. The vision of the project must be totally reasserted. We don't know for sure exactly what this thing is supposed to be and are slowly mutating the original idea into something unrecognizable. Let me attempt to list the points that must be addressed.

1. Number of contributors
The initial "baker's dozen" has expanded from what was originally conceived as a small number of developers capable of delivering high-quality games in a short amount of time to an open group which anyone capable of making a game by the deadline can join. I'm not opposed to having more bakers, but we've got to step back and evaluate our current trajectory. Now I don't believe that the original authors were chosen because they are AGS's finest, or that they have a history of excellent games, otherwise, I would not be one of them. I do think that a certainly level of quality is expected, especially as this is a commercial bundle, and it would not be prudent to make it a simple open call. I've been in similar situations before, and in my experience, trying to be universally accommodating and focusing on not hurting anyone's feelings tends to lead to failure. In particular, I don't think icey should have one of his "games" in the bundle. They've consistently been utter crap littered with copyright violations. Further, monkey_05_06, I don't think you should be so offended that you weren't "chosen", but I definitely think you are capable of producing bundle-level quality. Finally on this point, the number of games in the bundle is not directly proportional to its total value. Once you start getting more than can be described as "several", the bundle is seen less as a focused collection of quality games and more as a big bargain bin of shit. Consequentially, the price the customers will be willing to pay for it decreases. So I think we need to establish an upper limit on the number of games.

2. Destination of donations
This is a big one. The whole bake sale was conceived as a means to help both CJ and the community by adding stability to the site by way of a new server. It is now known that such a purchase would not accomplish this goal. So we must decide whether to find an alternate means of pursuing the original goal, i.e. helping CJ and/or the community, or finding a new aim. Many destinations for the profits have been proposed, including charity, a server deputy, ports of the engine to other operating systems, further development of the engine and editor, the AGS Archives server, and the pockets of the bakers. This is one of the more complex issues, but I think it may be simpler than it seems. Namely, that it largely depends on...

3. Source of donations
Who is going to buy the bundle? The concept that's been bandied about is that this a by the community, for the community event, but I think that's hogwash. I feel it unlikely that just the AGS community will be able to raise any significant amount of money. Quite frankly, AGS is a community very much entrenched in the notion of freeware, from the editor to the engine to the games, and historically have been hesitant to release or purchase commercial games. The real money is out there on the Internet. It is a matter of scale that must be discussed. Do we want to limit the appeal of the bundle to the AGS community? In my opinion, no, and where the profits go determine the marketability of the bundle. The "several games for one cheap price" angle only goes so far; people care where their money is going. To be honest, I think that the majority of potential customers would be unwilling to donate to a cause that only benefits this community. Really, no matter how you look at it, the bundle is charity, it's just a matter of whether people are donating to a "charitable cause" or merely donating to some people who need/want the money. I am arguing in favor of the full-on charity approach. The sheer reach of such a bundle vastly exceeds one aimed at private profits. For one, people are much more willing to donate if they know their cash is going to a good cause they support, and are willing to donate more. Further, the advertising spreads much more virally. Gaming sites and blogs love writing stories about gamers who are producing or playing games for charity. Finally, I think that the charities themselves are far more worthy of the donations than either server admins or myself and the bakers. I'd love to see us raise money for Child's Play or the Red Cross or something. So we need to come to a consensus on out target audience and its size.

4. New/additional management
This issue of scale then raises the additional question of whether we've got sufficient resources and leadership to pull the bundle off at a higher level. Ponch, I think that if we're targeting the AGS community and its peripheral adventure gamers, you've definitely got what it takes to lead us to a successful and non-chaotic launch. However, if we do attempt to branch out to the Internet as a whole, I think you might need some assistance to keep from being overwhelmed. It would just be too much for one cow to handle. The whole bake sale was, of course, primarily your idea and you should retain a high level of creative control, but if we plan to blow this up, we'll need someone like Dave Gilbert for the high number of transactions and "dealing with the press". Since Dave has this sort of experience, I think he'd be an invaluable asset to a larger-scale bundle. Also remember that as release draws near, we'll want testing and after it begins, we'll need customer support. I can definitely see the huge number of complications that would be brought on by aiming for even 1/10th of the original Humble Indie Bundle's scale, not to mention possible legal issues, so I can totally understand wanting to keep it smaller, but it's something that should be decided sooner rather than later.

So in conclusion, this is just my over-complex analysis of the situation and my attempt to raise the points that we must address. Frankly, LimpingFish's assessment is really more practical and on-point, but I do think there are some complex issues here that need to be resolved before we continue.

Okay. A lot of good points in that uber post / manifesto (I hope you're not writing that from a tar paper shack ;) )

* I agree we need to firmly establish a new vision for the bake sale. Why are we baking? We're working as fast as we can on that and once we get the required information from Dave, CJ, and a few others, we'll have a good idea at what we're looking at and what we can and can't accomplish.

* We probably need to set a cap on the number people working. At one point, someone (Cat, maybe? I don't remember), suggested 24. I can support that. We don't want the bundle getting so big that it becomes impossible to manage. If you want to consider the "open call for bakers" to be at an end, I can certainly understand why you feel that way. If we have too many games a'bakin' then we can just bump the later joiners to a summer bake sale or something. I'm confident there are several way to resolve this.

* Dave is going to handle the money (at least, I think that's right. Dave? Am I off the mark here?). I have total faith in his ability to handle the money (somebody has to), ensuring that it goes where it's supposed to and not into a hotel room filled with hookers and coke. (Again, Dave? Am I off the mark here? ;) )

*I can see where you're coming from with this place and our love of freeware. But I have more faith in the AGS community than that. We're not asking for a lot for the bundle. If a hundred people each pay ten bucks (I plan to may a lot more than that), that's still a thousand bucks. If two hundred do, then we've raised two thousand. I have faith that not everyone here is a cheapskate. If this is done for us, by us, then I think a lot of these nice people will step up and cough up a little cash to help us help them. :)

* I'm for giving a chunk to charity too. I prefer St. Judes, myself. But we're still working that out. I'm for giving a chunk to Peder and his archives. He pays for that out of his pocket, you know. I also support porting AGS to Mac or HTML5. We're still working on that and we've asked CJ to weigh in and tell us what he would like to do with the money since we were raising it for him originally. As soon as we hear from him, we'll have a much clearer view of things.

* I freely admit I'm being pulled to my limits. I have a day job and I volunteer several evenings a week. Ben, Darth, and Dave are all working hard to explore our options, look at the legal obligations, and get the word out to the interwebs. They're also helping to take a lot of the burden off me and keep everyone connected. None of us are getting paid to do this, ddq. And none of us expect to be. We're doing the best we can, man. Cut us just a little bit of slack, okay? We're working as fast as we can.  :-*

Thank you for the feedback, ddq. I welcome your advice and remind you that there's always a seat for you in the bat cave.

Just as a sidenote, my father works for St. Jude in their finance department and I know that any amount we donate wouldn't be a drop in the bucket of corporate donations and insurance funds they get. So while no one loves St. Jude more than me, (my dad's also a cancer survivor himself), it may not be the best target of a  $500-5,000 donation, though I could ask him about it. Child's Play is one that I'm partial to mainly because it's well-known to gamers and a cause that's close to many of their hearts. But I'm totally up for other charitable organizations.

Actually, child's play is a good idea.

But are you telling me that the money I give to St Judes every year goes completely unnoticed? I has a sad.  :'(

I haven't read all of the thread very carefully, so forgive me if this has been addressed already but...

If the issue is that

1. the AGS Bake Sale was originally conceived to raise money for a new server
2. CJ says what we need is not a new server, but manpower to admin the server
3. no one here who has the expertise has the time to take on this job

then

4. why not use the money from the Bake Sale to hire a server admin?

I don't know how to admin a server, but I've had a server for about a decade. I pay a guy $80 a month to take care of it for me. If there's a reason why this wouldn't work out for AGS, please enlighten this ignoramus.

Also, yes, the bundle should be targeted at non-AGS members as well. There's a big public reading these here forums. They just want to play good games. We can give them that.

My intention here is not to insult anyone, but if me practicing my freedom of thought and speech is a problem to someone they can go fuck themselves.

I quite agree with ddq's notion here. The whole thing seems to be running out of control, so you people need to pull it together before all goes to pot. Of course this is from an outsider's point of view, but that can't be a good sign, no? This thing started out with many good merits and a promise to go far...

Ok, so, you thought we need a new server and started working on that enthusiactically, with a good group in good spirits and all hyped up about it keeping it under wraps. Then, you unveil it to have it all blow apart.

At the point of unveiling the whole thing another dozen of people hitch a ride on the wagon. Your dozen of good games for a low price is indeed becoming a bargain bin of shit, as ddq nicely phrased it, because the more people are in the less I, for one, trust in the quality of individual games in the pack. Partially because I have less faith in some developers' ability to produce high enough quality, and partially because the "I wasn't invited but I demand to be part of this!" attitude just does not sit with me at all. I believe there was a well thought out reasoning behind the original group of bakers being selected, and this free for all, I would assume, competely wrecks that reasoning. One down.

Then it turns out the very cause you're raising money for doesn't need the money, and nobody bothered to verify this beforehand, and no-one has a backup plan for such a case. Another down.

So, options are discussed, and everyone with a less than "I want money because money money money" obvious claim for the funds jumps in wanting a share. The discussion is good, but in my opinion direly misplaced; this should have been thought out beforehand, or there should be some sort of a solid ground to go from. "Let's do something for the good of the community" isn't such, especially with charity coming into the picture.

Let's say charity is picked, what then?

I'm not saying charity is a bad idea. There are so many charities and all over the world that you theoretically could give the money to, but what would be the point?

Of course there's the community vs. gamers all around aspect, depending on who is the final target audience of the sale, etc. But, I still think it should be something to do with the community. I don't think a very large percentage of us are cancer patients. And if we get on that, an evenly valid claim would be mine to donate it to the European Blind Union or some such affiliated party.

No. I think it should be something closer to the whole community. For example, I would guess there are a lot of young people around still, or a lot of people who know young people. How about a youth mental health charity for example? I can't throw any international names off the top of my head but I am sure you get the picture. Something the community more or less might even, by a far shot, benefit from in the end. And while at it, before anyone jumps on that I'm opposed to giving it to church or somesuch, handing out boring as hell fairy tale books to hungry kids in earthquake zones isn't helping much.

Sure, the idea is nice, but do keep it together to the end. There are people who can run this sort of an endeavour, and it'd indeed be for the good of us all if done right, but the direction it seems to be taking right now is not very promising in my opinion.

EDIT: Ofcourse, I am not opposed to the server admin/deputy guy idea, but raising money just for that seems a bit silly. I am indifferent about the porting, but I don't see why that can't be done without money, even if it does take some more time. But that is just me not having such passion towards the subject.

Well said Tommi, and I send a preemptive "go fuck yourself" to anyone who thinks Penny Arcade's dickwolves joke was out of line. If anyone's qualified to make a rape joke, it's them.

Another gamer charity that donates to Child's Play is the very wonderful Desert Bus for Hope (http://desertbus.org), which will be doing its 5th annual endless drive through the Mojave in 3 weeks, so be sure to check them out too!

A charity or charities would be a good use for the money originally intended for the unnecessary server. Doing something for the community would be nice, but outside of putting a down payment on Christopia or buying the Mittens France Chateau for our parties would not benefit the entire community equally.

I believe any charity chosen should be mostly neutral and something that everyone can get behind. Child's Play seems to represent us well since we are a gaming community after all.

Another option is to have the bakers choose their own charity and donate in the name of AGS. This does have the negative side of having the total donation amount being lower than if it were given to just one charity, but spreading it around and making donations to charities close to the hearts of the bakers would be a good repayment and still a boost for the community in some way.

For instance, I donated some money to Western Australia Samaritans for Ben's birthday last year. It was a rather poignant decision to donate to that group in particular that I won't get into publicly, but perhaps something that can make a difference in the areas where developers live? I'm not sure how feasible that would be in reality, just another thought.

Yay, I read through the whole thread :D And beside this pointless remark I even have something more to add:

As a potential customer (since I have nothing to bake), I'd support Kaputtnik's idea.
Let's pay someone who port the engine to SDL. As far as I know this is a pretty big deal since SDL is missing some functionality of Allegro and I doubt we can do it ourselves in reasonable time (like a year or so).

So how about this: First bake sale is for porting AGS to the droid and ios.

Second bake sale: creating adventure for phones (which will sell much better) and donate thousands pieces of eight for charity :)

That's exactly what I was thinking just now:

First bake sale: make AGS a suitable vehicle for modern-day cross-platform game development.

Second - infinite bake sale: establish this reputation by hosting an annual charity game making event.

This way, the first bake sale will be more or less a community thing, although people from outside who are excited about the idea of having AGS games on mobile devices will certainly buy/donate as well. Then, once we have reached portability, we can host a seriously universal charity event that will raise some substantial money for a good cause, bring exciting new people to AGS and maybe introduce a whole new generation to adventure games.

As much as I agree with the ideas about getting AGS once and for all Cross-Platform, thereby making this kind of thing more viable, I'd have to say that I'd hardly consider AGS a "Charity", or something worthy of the general throwing-of-money-at that this could become.
Don't misunderstand me, I love AGS and it's community. A lot. I have spent more time reading these forums, playing these games and chatting on the AGS IRC channel then I've spent on all other game-related websites combined. Serious. No joke. In all honesty...
where was I... However, beyond addressing a specific and finite need, such as replacing a server, I cannot fully support a fund-raiser designed only to make AGS better.
I believe there are far more important uses of money.

It's more like the decision whether to buy seed or fruit. Besides there are hundreds of aid organisations, which gratefully accept donations and the good thing is that you can decide on your own, which org you'd like to fund.

I'd jump on board and support Child's Play as well if it does end up as a charity donation rather than contributing to the maintenance of the community. Helps generate exposure for AGS within the gaming society at large, as well.

If we've got twice as many people joining in as bakers than expected, how about splitting the games into (at least) two different batches, and dealing with distributing the newer ones later on? Or, (and I have absolutely no idea of the technical implications of this) making a "pick and mix" system, whereby buyers choose a set amount out of the selection.

I didn't say they were good ideas, just clearing out my brain.

EDIT: You are involved now. YAY teh Rittenhouzee!

People are just confusing discussion with method. I too have been motivated to make a game, and started it a couple of nights ago. It's inspired entirely by the Bake sale thread coming about, but alas, it will be free and out before the bake sale itself. I think many felt a positive reaction to the idea whether we are involved in the dozen or not. Strangely the reaction is to work on a game. More than that. I can't really explain the last couple of days  ;D I have confidence in your game abilities and you should definitely make the grade, I'm just saying don't worry too much if it doesn't happen. Hopefully the positive boost behind the idea (and the baking of a cake) will be satisfying enough.

Personally I agree about keeping it at 13 games, 13 developers. It is after all the bakers dozen. And that means something quite specifically  := But don't let the discussion here over-influence your decisions. Just keep us in the loop  8)

My 3 cents, yes I know I wasn't asked! :D

¢1 : If CJ/authority figure on the forums doesn't want the money/can't use the money to help the AGS community (via porting, server maintenance, site upgrade etc.), then it should go to a charity - Child's Play seems the most natural choice, not because other charities are not as deserving, but because of the very essence of the community, the engine, and the prospective buyers.

¢2 : I agree that the games in the bundle should adhere to a certain degree of quality. Even as one of those who probably cannot reach that standard, I postulate: why not have a committee comprising of a part, or all of the Bakers Dozen vote on each possible entry with a simple "yay" or "nay"? The majority shall decide if the game is accepted in the bundle or not.

¢3 : Peder should get a cut or at least a sum from the money. He has been doing a ton of stuff regarding the community including FREE agser.me accounts, new AGS Archives site as well as MINECRAFT SERVER OMG.
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 26 Oct 2011, 18:50
We don't want the bundle to grow so large that it becomes unmanageable, true. And ddq's point about it appearing to be shovelware if a hundred games are all clumped together is a valid one.

That being said, however, several people have already expressed interest (either in one of the threads or in PMs) and started making games. I can't tell those people to stop. It wouldn't be fair.

So if you're already in, keep baking. If you haven't joined up but were thinking about it, why not hold on to that good idea and be a part of the next bake sale in the summer (or possibly next Christmas. We still haven't decided).

I'm pretty sure this won't be the only event we hold, so there's plenty of time to join the next one (or the one after that!  :D ).

Thanks for all your support, everyone. It means a lot to us.  :=

We're working on a game for the bake sale.  Myself doing the story, dialog and backgrounds, and Neil doing the character art and animations.  It'll be something... Well... Lets just say unique.

Looking forward to posting some screenies once we have more to show for it.   It'll be fun though, working on something other than a Murran Chronicle game for the first time in almost 3 years :)

Post by: straydogstrut on 26 Oct 2011, 19:03
I still fully support the Bake Sale despite a new server no longer being the aim. To be honest, a server itself doesn't really do it for me but the idea of this whole coming together of developers for a mutual cause to benefit the AGS community really moved me. There have been wonderful things happening in the forums - the Swarm, AdventureX, AGSArchives, Nimbus (not really sure where that one's at now but it was beautiful) - and this just epitomises the fantastic community spirit around here. It brought a tear to my eye, it really did :'(

It might no longer be for a new server but I don't think this thing has gotten out of hand yet. People are just rallying round with ideas and that's really pleasing to see. Not all the ideas have to be taken on board - and I think the real discussion is happening in this cold and damp cave I keep hearing about - but it's good to see so many people involved. Yay for you!

Personally i'm happy with the charity idea. It sends out a really good message about our community and does have wide market appeal. I do think this bake sale should be aimed at the community and beyond so it can only help if the cause reflects that.

That's not to say I wouldn't support a 'for the community' cause. I really would and AGSArchives would be my first choice. It's a very visible, not to mention lovely, side to the AGS community that benefits us and people who just want to play our games. That and Peder is an all-round wonderful guy who has put a lot of effort into it, not to mention giving out those personal website thingys and letting me get blown up by creepers on a regular basis :o

I do fully support the monies to the developers idea too but as the Bakers have already said that isn't the focus of this particular Bake Sale - but remember that this is hopefully going to be a regular thing so lets not rule it out for the future!! ;D

Also, although the iDevice lover in me squeals excitedly at the thought of supporting a cross-platform initiative in some form, I don't think this needs money, it just needs passionate people. We have all the time in the world to do this. I can wait :)

Finally, i'm not too worried about the quality of the games: I wouldn't submit anything less than polished for something like this and I hope others would do the same. I do agree there should be a cap on the number of games though as the value in the eyes of the consumers will go down with too many games in there. That doesn't mean people shouldn't make their games. It has inspired me to finish a game too but I don't intend to submit it to the Bake Sale. I don't think people should be offended if their game doesn't make the cut. I hate to say it because I never want to 'sell' anything, but I do think there does have to be someone with some marketing know-how like Dave to streamline the package to maximise profits. After all, it's for a good cause :)

Bottom line, I'm not worried. I think the Bake Sale is in very safe um..hooves? with Ponch. Go you, little cow man thing.

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: markbilly on 27 Oct 2011, 00:05
The thinking is that the game you offer up will be part of the bake sale bundle and squirreled away for a year to give people an incentive to buy the games during the sale and not just wait patiently for a month for the sale to end and then get them for free instead of helping us to raise money.

After the year has passed, we hold a new bake sale for another worthy cause and once the second bake sale is over,  you'll get your old game from the first bake sale back to do what you want with it.

I hope that sounds fair to everyone.  :)

I may have to do a U-turn on my intention to join the Bakerhood because of this - or, at least back out of developing PMQs 2 for it. You see, well over 50% of the people who played PMQs weren't from the gaming community. If I released PMQs 2 in the bundle, I'd need to somehow get the game to all the non-gamers out there without them having to download a heap of adventure games along with it.

So I'd need to be able to offer them a direct download link, as well as the link to the Bake Sale Bundle. Which wouldn't work under the (perfectly understandable) rules.

I'll have a think and see if there's some other way I can contribute.

I haz ideaz!

I don't know what the status of the talks regarding the bake sale is, but how about this:

* Split all the games into 4 bundles, each with a sale time of one week/bundle. That way, you sell 3-4 games at a time, so the value per bundle should, theoretically, not decrease, and the whole event will be spread out over a whole month! (I'd suggest 2 weeks/bundle, but that would mean the whole thing would last 2 months and that seems a bit excessive).

* On an unrelated note, we should totally have an event, maybe a livestream, where each developer comes in and talks a little bit about their game. We could have 2-3 AGSers acts as hosts and conduct the interviews. Maybe each developer could LP the first 30 mins of their game or something, I don't know. I think it would be great fun and a great promotional tool.

I just had these thoughts rattling around my brain, and I just had to share them or they would've nagged me to death. :)

Mine will be a cake in the shape of a rotten brain.

MINE WILL FEATURE ROBO-PORN. So yeah, beat that.

Check, and mate.

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Ponch on 07 Nov 2011, 14:41
Ghost abandoned that game as too big to finish in time for the bake sale. He has started on a new cool, but smaller game about a haunted house. In fact, I've seen a screen shot of it, so I'm a little puzzled as to why he hasn't started a GiP thread about it yet.

And Bill, the order of importance is bake sale on top, then skyrim, and lastly, marriage. Just remember that and everything will work out fine.  :=

Hello.

Thanks for you reply, I didnt read it before!

I think you should look into trusted old AGS people here and start assigning some responsabilities usually done by yourself. That would be a good start. About the site and such, maybe some volunteer appears.

Maybe a big forum and site message asking for help would be nice, but certain tasks with personal information (like the forum) should be done by trusted people.

In the end, meritocratic communities give the best results.

Regards.

I don't know if the topic was brought up before but when I told about the AGS Bake Sale to my friends, one of them told me to send you this:

http://www.regretsy.com/2011/12/05/cats-1-kids-0/
http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/paypal-fiasco-summary.php

Long story short, be extra extra careful how you will handle the whole selling process if Paypal is involved because the last thing you need is Paypal freezing the money and/or forcing you to refund everyone, leeching yet again a cuts from the transactions in the process.

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale

And the baking is finished!  :D

Here are the games that will be featured in the first AGS Bake Sale:

9 Months In
by Tzachs, Noavana, and gameboy

Abner The Amazing
by poc301 and LocutusOfBored

Barn Runner: The Rich Dame Who Cut The Cheese
by Ponch

Ben Chandler, Paranormal Investigator - In Search Of The Sweets Tin
by Grundislav

Entrapment
by Tenacious Stu

Escape The Barn
by Cat

Falling Skyward
by ThreeOhFour

Fragment
by Kaputtnik and ThreeOhFour

Indiana Rodent and the Raiders Of The Lost Cheese
by Radiant

The Rail
by Technocrat

RAM Ghost
by Ghost

Red Volition
by Hofmeier (The secret is out at last!)

Retina
by Dualnames

Zombie Attack
by ShiverMeSideways

That's quite an impressive list for our first effort. Our thanks go out to each and every baker, both those who turned in a game and those who weren't able to make the deadline for one reason or another. We hope the games that weren't finished in time will still see the light of day. They were all very cool ideas and they surely would have made for some good gaming fun.

The bake sale happens in less than ten days. We hope the AGS Community will turn out to support us with fistfuls of money.  ;)

Thanks for all the kind words and well-wishes, guys. You've proved once again that this is one of the best little corners of the interwebs.  :D

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale
Post by: Kastchey on 12 Jan 2012, 12:56
Internet and gaming slang. "Full of win" means victorious, high quality or successful. A rather poor choice of words, it makes the title sound as if the text was directed to teenage internauts, hence the comments under the article.

Where else are you promoting this because this thread does not seem to be getting nearly enough attention, I presume there are other pages elsewhere? Also Ponchypoos any chance of updating the first page with the games list for this sale? Would be v. useful.. :)

Ghost is right. A web page is being baked as we speak. I'll update the first post of this thread with the most up to date info and stuff when I get home tonight.

The truth is that we've chosen to lay low for a few more days because Dave is having his big Steam launch today and he needs to put all his focus on that. Plus, he's going to be surrounded by movie stars, private yachts, and cocaine all day, and we don't want to distract him from that.

We plan to begin the media blitz next week.  8)

The Official Bake Sale Bundle Website

Tell your friends, spread the word, let the world know the Bake Sale is on its way!!

Also;

If you encounter any problems with the site do let me know (via PM).  I have tested it in real browsers (Chrome, Firefox and Safari) and it works great!  IE doesn't display some of the CSS3 stuff but if you're using IE you probably can't figure out how to use the web anyway and are used to websites looking crap!

If it's not too much effort, Darth, (and if you think it'll be worth it) how about a little box for people to put their email address, so they can be sent a reminder when the bake sale opens?  I just have nightmares of people clicking on it, going 'ooh this looks interesting, I'll come back in 5 days' and then forgetting about it.

Bravo!

For you AGSers who also Reddit, here's a link you can upvote! http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/oik85/support_childs_play_charity_ags_bake_sale_bundle/

For the record, while citing you can "pay what you want" is fairly accurate, some people might be interested in why there is a 1.50 minimum. For transparency, you may want to explain what this charge is and where it goes? Not that I personally care, but internet people are notoriously scrutinous.
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale (FIRST POST UPDATED WITH NEWS)
Post by: Peder 🚀 on 16 Jan 2012, 01:06
LGM, I'm assuming it has to do with bmtmicro.com being used and possible fees related to them.
I assume the price is set to $1.50 minimum to make sure every payment gives some money to Child's Play.

I would of thought the obvious and best way to do the payment system would have been to hook up a paypal system that would transfer the money directly to Child's Play's paypal account.

Yay, e-mail! Of course I signed up!

It would be cool to have some indication of what games have demos, at least a link on the game's pop-up page, if everyone is ok with that and if Darth would be so kind. :)

Why you no like like button? think about all the sharing of the site? Don't you wan't it to "get out there" so more people can buy the games ???

I dunno of a like button really would make any difference. Besides if someone really want to share the site with people all they gotta do is copy the url, no biggy.

I've also signed up! Can't wait for the 20th! :D. I'm still waiting for material for AGSA to "advertise" this :(.

Would it be too much trouble for my game Entrapment to say 'Lightbulb Games' instead of my forum name? And maybe link to www.lightbulbgames.co.uk (http://www.lightbulbgames.co.uk)?

I'm going to start spreading the word on Twitter and Lightbulb Games website and Facebook and Word of Mouth and everything!!!

Go Bake Sale!!!

Will the site have some kind of live meter or other indication of how much money is being raised over the course of the bake sale?  Some of these bundle sites also have various stats like 'average price' and 'top contributors' etc.  If that's not too much effort to set up, it would interesting to have that sort of data.  :D

Silly question: how long will the Bake Sale last? Will it be a 24 hour smash n' grab all you can eat buffet, or a leisurely 1-2 week brunch like other Indie Bundles?

Again, congrats to all those involved, job outstandingly well done :o

One more thing about the site, it might be an idea to include some sort of Email address, just incase (heaven forbid) that someone purchases the Bake Sale and is experiencing difficulty in their download. The last thing we want is people to have problems and have no where to turn to.

That is taken care of on the BMT side (I believe).  I did setup an email address and provided it to them (through Ponch) which I assumed was what it was for :)

I have added a link back to the Hints & Tips section (where the reminder used to be) I see no reason they couldn't use the hints/tips here!  I mean, they are all AGS games after all :)

Also what the fuck is up with the system always changing my price?? It changes my price to some "random" price.... I tried putting for example 100 NOK in, and it changed it to 700 NOK, I put 10 in and it changes it to 70 NOK etc..  >:( >:( >:( >:(

EDIT
Ok so the price you put in for the product is ALWAYS in USD.. I get it now.. That will be confusing for a lot of people as the total amount defaults to the persons currency based on their location...

Ponch's general guidelines to American currency

10 USD is for broke college students.
25 USD is for people with decent jobs.
50 USD is for people who love AGS and want to help sick kids and earn karma points.

These figures are just suggestions, of course.  :=

One dollar per game, or $14 total, sounds like a decent price.

You'll surely get more hours of entertainment out of it than if you spend the same money on cinema tickets.

It is your decision, when all's said and done.
Technically you get 14 full games, two thirds of which are classic point and click adventure games. Concerning length I would range most of the games as medium length, but a couple really are "full length" for one reason or another. It's an indie game bundle.

Hope that gives you a bit of an idea  ;)

The individual downloads are there to make it easier to patch / update games if that becomes necessary.

While that is a good point, it would be convenient to the end user to also add a "download all" button. This may also decrease server load: when there are fourteen links, people are tempted to download them all simultaneously.

Also, it would really help if the download page listed file sizes. Some of these are much bigger than the others.

Finally, I'm still seeing the slashdot effect big time. The website isn't loading for me, and when I ordered I got three download links: the first didn't open, the second did but when I downloaded the games I got empty zero-byte files. However, the third does work.

Anyway, downloading now, playing tonight :)

Wow, this is exciting!! Sadly I really can't treat myself until next friday - seriously - but will definitely gift myself and friends some bundles when it comes around :D

FYI, not really important but the Copyright date on the website is showing code rather than the year. I really love the website, it's fantastic :)

Awesome! I only played two games but they are great and I'm sure the others are as well.

Minor thing - after clicking "Understood" the popup should close so I can still read the pagecontent.

Hey guys...

I've been making a boat-load of changes the website (most notably converting it from Coldfusion mark-up to plain ol' HTML).  So that explains some of the issues.

- The non-clickable button should be fixed and
- the button now opens in a new window which SHOULD solve the payPal problem and
- the button now causes the window to close
- the date in the footer has been updated as well (that was a coldfusion left-over)

We're working like crazy behind the scenes to keep this running.  Turns out my hosting company is a piece of junk and can't handle the traffic.  Needless to say ol' Darth is now on the hunt for a new hosting provider!!

What browser/version are you using (if you know the version)?

UPDATE
I think most of the problems fall back on my server being a tad on the sh*tty side :)  To circumvent such fecal-like quality we have transferred the site to Wadjet Eye's servers (thanks to the graciousness of Mr. Gilbert)!  Think of my server as a puny 3 year old kid and Dave's is a 27 year old body builder on steroids...

Let me know if there are any more problems!

Firefox 8.0, but now it seems to work again.

I'll buy later anyway when there isn't so much traffic anymore. I'm just testing.

Firefox 8.0, but now it seems to work again.

I think I was able to duplicate the problem you were having... it wasn't fully loading the page in (my server again!) and the javascript function needed to process the button click wasn't on the page!  So if the page fully loads (Which it now should on the WEG server) it should be working fine!

When does this bundle run until? I don't want to accidentally miss it while waiting for the VAT problems to be sorted.

As I said earlier in the thread, normally I wouldn't complain because I'm supposed to pay VAT. :P

But as far as I know I'm not supposed to be charged VAT on charity donations. Hence why I'm holding out until this is fixed... I don't want the government digging their hands into my pockets when they're not supposed to.

Edit: I received a reply from BMT and they are just as mystified as I am.  Can you email me your order receipt that shows the VAT charge? (dave AT wadjeteyegames DOT com)?  Or email a screencap of it?

Well I haven't actually put it through because I keep backing off to see if it gets fixed. I can send you a screenshot of it applying the VAT if you like?

Pre-post EDIT: I'm stupid!

While getting the screenshot, I've just realised what's happening. It's listing 20% VAT as a thing I'm going to be charged, and then charging me nothing. So it looks like it is fixed.

Not sure at what point it changed because the last few times I refreshed, I was looking for the VAT listing to disappear or change to 0% rather than actually looking at what it was trying to charge me. Sorry for carrying on complaining about something that was already fixed!

@SirPrimalForm & Those still having VAT issues.  Check the amount in the VAT line.  After Dave said he'd got it sorted, I went back and it still said '20% VAT', and I was about to come back here and say that it hadn't worked, until I realised that the amount in the VAT field said £0.00, so it was actually fine.
You saw it :-)

Just played '9 Months In' and loved it.  Well done to Tzachs et al. :)
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale *** IS NOW UNDERWAY!***
Post by: Dave Gilbert on 20 Jan 2012, 20:57
BMT is unable to change the 20% VAT label, but they are able to move the two fields closer together so the discount is much more obvious.

If you have any other issues or problems let me know!

Unfortunately, when I click the "understood! buy the bundle!"-button, nothing happens.

I'm getting the same.  Nothing happens when I click on 'Understood.  Buy the bundle.'

Is it possible to fix this?  Not everyone who goes to the Bake Sale site will come from here - a lot of people will see links displayed elsewhere (other sites, facebook etc).  If they click on the Buy link, and nothing happens, they won't know what to do.   :(

Anyhoo, thanks for buying a bundle, Frodo. I hope you like it. I hear 9 months in goes will with General Hospital. In Search of the Sweets Tin is much more in the vein of Phantom of the Park though. ;)

Fragment - FANTASTIC

:D

So far I've completed the following (not counting the 3 I'd already played through before):

The Rail - stylish, and I got the best ending first :D
Red Volition - oh man, this was totally great! Some of those skills took a while to figure out too, I thought it was well balanced.
Escape the Barn - especially enjoyed all the little animations in this one!
Entrapment - moody and tense, and some of the puzzles kept me going for a while. Nice that you can choose an ending!
RAM Ghost - got a little addicted to this and kept doing the "one more upgrade" thing. Impressive that this was coded in such a short time!

So far, so good! :D

I'm just going down the list in alphabetical order.  So far I've only played:

'9 Months In' - which is a brilliant little mystery, but I only got 81/100 and a weird ending.  Can't wait to play it again soon and aim for 100 and see if I get more explanation.

'Abner the Amazing' - Which is hilarious!  I wished it could have been a longer adventure where you collect the colours one by one.  Maybe something to think about for 'Abner the Deluxe' ;)

And I'm underway with 'Barn Runner' - A lot of talking so far, but the dialogue is very funny, so that's not a problem.

I'm technically not supposed to be playing games as I have 2 exams next week, but I'll comment on each game as and when I play them.  I'm looking forward to trying them all, but the one I'm looking forward to most is 'Red Volition'  :D

I still haven't unlocked the 100% ending in 9 Months In either. But on the other hand, I did unlock the perfect ending in Barn Runner, so I've got that going for me.  ;)

Thanks for the support everyone. I can tell you guys that the gossip coming from the kitchen is that we raised a very nice amount of money on our first day and sales continue to be strong. The average donation is about 4 dollars or so and we're rapidly closing in on the two thousand dollar mark.  :D

To be honest, I was hoping we would raise maybe three hundred dollars (five hundred if we were very lucky), and we surpassed that mark in the first few hours! I can't tell you how pleased I am.

My teeth are well and truly sunk :) So far i've finished 9 Months In, Ben Chandler PI and Falling Skywards. Fantastic games, i loved the voice acting and personalities in Ben Chandler PI! Charming characters in all the games i have played.

9 Months In had a very interesting story, i'm not sure i quite followed the ending, my theory seems a little whacky - i'll have to go for the 100 point ending! The voice acting went down a treat, made the multiple story elements a little less overwhelming.

Falling Skywards was the third game i've completed from Ben this week, arguably the best! The hints toward the progression that happens at the end are subtle but poignant, very 304. I really liked the pacing of the puzzles, the nature of the items made the backstory feel like something big. please continue this one Ben!

...and on that note! Ben Chandler PI, which really hit the retro nail on the head. The characters were genuinely funny, the voice acting was of a very high standard and those animations! I love how Grundislav animates his sprites, it feels very Monkey Island and i think i spotted a few hints at that. The song was brilliant, i played with friends and it instantly got their attention. Lots of 'LOLZ'* were had.

Great games so far. I'll update once they're all conquered!

*lol - In it's primitive, 'laugh out loud' state.

Well, they probably think it's the same as the Humble Indie Bundles, which did have Steam activation.
But if people just want it to be on their Steam library list for convenience reasons, that's easy. You can add any program, doesn't even have to be a game (or even a real program**), and still let friends know what you are playing/working on. On the top menu, hit Games, then Add Non-Steam Game to My Library.

**Add a program to your library, like Wordpad, that wouldn't bother you while sitting in the background/task bar of your computer. Rename it in Steam whenever you want to with whatever you want such as "Watching a movie." or "Writing or drawing."

Most of the negative comments I've seen have been that Child's Play is not the most worthwhile charity... which is kind of true.

I'm honestly much less excited to buy/donate now than I was when it was supposed to be a community fund for AGS expenses. I'll probably just throw in a nominal amount at some point.

Most of the negative comments I've seen have been that Child's Play is not the most worthwhile charity... which is kind of true.

Medicine and tests are not the only thing a child needs to get better. Raising their quality of life and making them feel comfortable in a hospital situation while all their toys and friends have been taken away from them, possibly for months, could seriously benefit that kid from being scared or depressed.

I remember being scared out of my wits end when getting surgery when I was a toddler. I had to sit in this darkened room with a bunch of strange adults who were waiting for surgery also, and my parents weren't even allowed to be with me. No one gave me anything to do or told me what was going on, just that I had to stay there and wait. You've got to be kidding me! I ran out of the room bawling for my parents and some nurse found me and we eventually found them. But again, the nurses pretty much told me that I had to wait in that room for a "little bit" and my parents had to stay outside. A little bit ended up being several hours and I was mad and scared and frequently tried to "escape"! My parents were furious that they couldn't be with me and we still don't understand why we couldn't have waited for my surgery appointment somewhere else---somewhere more kid-friendly, with lots of toys and games.

So, yeah, personally, I'm all for Child's Play!

I'm not really AGAINST Child's Play in any way, but if I decided that I wanted to give to charity, it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list. When I am buying a humble bundle, I usually set the Child's Play donation percentage to the least.

What irks me a bit is that it seems to be the default: "Oh, you're a gamer/game-maker? Then you will donate to Child's Play". There ARE (what I would consider to be) loads of more deserving charities.

I personally really like what Child's Play are doing, but each to his own, I guess.

This weird negativity about CP reminds of that immature derision aimed at bands who have become "too commercial", which is preposterous anyway.  You either like the music or you don't.  If you don't like the music, fair play - buy a different album.  And if you don't like CP, also fair play - buy the Bake Sale Bundle for $1.50 (or wait six weeks and get it free) and then jog on to the website of a charity you do like and donate whatever you fancy.

Well, at least it's not one of those charities infamous for giving a huge salary to its director.

Anyway, for next year's Bake Sale a different charity could be considered, or a vote between several prior to going live. Variation is a good thing anyway.

Er, just so you know, that's not an option.  The games will NOT be going free.  We discussed this internally, and we decided it would be unfair to the people who paid money, as well as give us zero credibility the next time we do a bake sale.  So, no freebies.

Once the sale's over, the bakers have agreed to keep their games under lock and key for a year- it could really annoy customers to buy a game bundle and then see the games for free hardly two months later.
After that year re-releases, deluxe editions, movies-of-the-game and musical adaptions are very likely. I hear Phil Collins is already memorizing Waltzing Mathilda.

We talked about it internally and argued about it quite a bit, and in the end decided to do it this way.

And in case anyone is interested in seeing how well the bundle's doing so far, here are the stats after three days of being online:

Number of bundles sold: 695

Largest amount donated: $85

Average donation: $3.86

Number of donations $5 or below: 535 (77%)

Number of donations $20 or above: 22 (3%)

Total earned: $2683.46

There has been talk about Bake Sale II. Possibly even Bake Sale 1.5, which would be a smaller fundraiser here in this community, just to raise money for Peder or CJ or some "local" cause. Maybe we could get the bakers who weren't able to finish their games for this sale to polish 'em up and sale them this summer to help the AGS Archives of something. Heck, who knows? We might even buy CJ a server or something. 8)

Bake Sale II, when it happens, would be a larger, "open to the world" affair that would raise money for charity again. But that's a year away and we're all pretty baked-out at the moment.  ;)

Thanks so much for all your support guys. Clearly this is still the best community on the intertubes.  :D

I'd suggest with next bake sale to go more advanced, get some website developers to create a more advanced system more like all the other bundle sales, with a way to pick the charity they want the money they spend to go to etc. Fully AGS Bake Sale branded. Look at the other bundle sites for ideas. Making it more interactive could probably help raise more money too. I dunno if it is, but I would think some people MIGHT be put off by the payment page being fully WEG branded with only the product name hinting it is AGS Bake Sale related. I also recon there must be ways to avoid all these ridiculess transaction fees.
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale *** IS NOW UNDERWAY!***
Post by: zyzzyvette on 24 Jan 2012, 03:22
I would also suggest using a different payment setup, but for different reasons. I think the WEG one is a little awkward. If you try to donate $x in a different currency, it sets the price to $x USD and shows the converted amount. I'm not American so I had to guess at exchange rates. Also the form makes it seem like Paypal users have to fill in their contact details, then just throws them out when you get to the payment options section. Part of the point of Paypal is that you don't have to do virtual paperwork; if I hadn't already learned the "trick" from the Blackwell games I might've bailed. :P Yeah it's extremely lazy but it's hard to overestimate the power of laziness.

That said I've played a half dozen of them so far and finished a few and they're pretty great so far.  :o "The Rail" is probably my favorite -- my astronomy class discussed how life would have to operate on tidally-locked planets only a few weeks ago, so in addition to being a great game it made my inner nerd whee. But it's pretty close competition.  ;D
Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale *** IS NOW UNDERWAY!***
Post by: Ponch on 24 Jan 2012, 03:42
Thanks for supporting our fundraiser, zyzzyvette.

I'm glad The Rail touched your inner nerd in a special way. And I'm sorry you found the WEG setup a little awkward.

We chose WEG for several reasons. If we went through Child's Play's PayPal setup, then we would have no idea how much money we were actually raising. And since this is our first time doing a fundraiser, we wanted the ability to check our stats day to day and see how we were doing. Further, this being our first fundraiser, Dave has ready access to the WEG setup and the fine folks at BMT Micro, so that made it an obvious choice for us. Plus Dave offers free tech support and PR releases to us, and that's the sort of thing that's hard to say no to.  ;)

Still, you dared the fearsome dragons of the WEG checkout page and returned home victorious with much treasure and swag. Sure, it may not have been quite as easy as PayPal, but think of the adventure you would have missed out on if you'd taken the road more traveled. And now you have a tale to share with your grandkids one day.  ;D

Thanks again for showing us a little love,

Ponch

Several people are very confused that there is no option to designate a portion of their donation to the developers. People do want to support you guys and they think you're being even more humble than a Humble Indie Bundle... almost stupidly so. Please, consider respecting people's decision on whether or not they want to give to *you* as well as a charity of their choice. Sometimes respecting a person's decision to help is worth more than refusing that help.

I happen to agree with this. As much as I support Child's Play, I still feel a bit gypped that I was not allowed to help you guys at least a little. Do you have anywhere people can send an added donation?  :-\

Post by: Stupot on 24 Jan 2012, 10:15
I do see the point, and I would happily have given a proportion of my payment to the devs if that were an option.  But there is a difference in that the games on Humble Bundle are all commercial titles, whereas the vast majority of AGS games are free anyway, so the fact that the bakers didn't ask for any money for themselves kind of follows on from the typically freeware nature of this community.  That said, I can see some of the games in the bake sale becoming commercial deluxe ventures in future :)

How about respecting the decision of the developers?

I didn't donate to Child's Play. I donated the developers and got the games for it. But I knew, that they won't hold on this money, because they told us about their choice to donate everything (that we are willing to pay/donate for the games) to a special charity organization.

It's not that complicated. We support the developers and they donate!

Who am I to tell someone else, where he has to donate? This may be a given option sometimes, that's okay -  but all the people who demand it, show a kind of disrespect in my eyes.

This Bake Sale is such a wonderful project - enjoy the games and that there is something positive going on  :-*

When I pointed it out to Dave Gilbert in the channel yesterday he ignored me completely for some strange reason, so I guess I have to overcome the laziness and post here: maybe it's not too late to write the name of Ben's game correctly on the bake sale page after all? Which is Falling Skywards.

Hey I just wanted to drop a line and say good job with the bake sale!

I've only finished the rail so far but am in the middle of falling skywards and I'm enjoying it a lot. Kudos to however started the whole bake sale thing. An honorable cause and an asswhoppin' bunch of games - can't ask for much more than that. Looking forward to more bake sales!

Hey guys,

I only paid $5 which makes me feel like a tightarse, but awesome games. Just wondering how long the download page will last for?

(Sorry if this has already been asked - I tried trawling the thread to see if this was asked but I failed to find it)

Just wondering how long the download page will last for?

Yah, it's a large thread and information can get buried  ;)

The Bake Sale will run for the full February, and then close in a last cheerful explosion of whipped cream, smelly leather pants and a few wheelbarrows of money.  ;)

Don't get me wrong though, people who absolutely hated it are very welcome to get it as well.

Number of bundles sold: 957

Average donation: $3.88

Number of donations $5 or below: 753 (79%)

Number of donations $20 or above: 30 (3%)

We're on track to hit four thousand before it's over with. Not too shabby for a bunch of people who had never done anything like this before.  :D

Title: Re: The AGS Bake Sale --- Latest Sales Figures
Post by: Thaumaturge on 08 Feb 2012, 20:47
I see from the first post that the bake sale is completed; does that mean that the bundle may no longer be bought, or is it still available?  If it is still available, for how long?  I'm afraid that I'm in a somewhat unpleasant financial situation at the moment, so, while I very much want some of the games in the bundle, and don't want to miss out on them entirely, I'm hesitant to buy right now (even at "name your own price" costs). :/

Hi Thaumaturge,

The bundle is available to buy (http://www.agsbakesale.com/) until the last day of February, so you've got a good three weeks left :)
If you can get a few bob together by then, it'll be well worth it.

Don't worry. We accept tiny donations too. If you're really in a pinch, don't feel bad about giving two or three bucks. Every little bit helps and we don't want you going without food or hot water or something on our account. It's a good cause, but please don't put yourself in a bind over it.

Besides, there's three weeks left in the sale, so there's no pressure. Plenty of time yet.  :D

Hope things turn around for you soon.

Good points, and, on reflection, my current situation is likely to change at the end of February (if not as hoped for, then at least, I think, a little for the better), leaving me free to use a little money, I do think.  I'll likely pick up the bundle either this weekend or next week, then.

Thank you! ^_^

Your guess is as good as mine.  ::)  I'm trying to pull Dave away from the hookers and cocaine long enough to give me a report, but I'm not having much luck. We raised a lot of money, and it bought a lot of hookers and cocaine. And, boy howdy, does Dave love the cocaine. And the hookers.  :=

Dave, seriously, please respond with a final tally or I shall have no choice but to continue to slander you in public.  ;)

If you'd stepped away from the hooker pile and the cocaine trough before now, you'd have them done by now. But no... you had to let Dave talk you into "one more round".  Tsk, tsk, Dave. Let WHAM get back to work.  ;)

We had a hooker pile?

Yep. I wanted to tell all the bakers about it, but Dave locked the door and said "NO! MINE!" Heck, I hardly got any for myself. Dave and WHAM (and Dualnames) hogged all the blow. It was terrible! Like the last days of Rome or something. That's why we forgot to take down the website and the bake sale went on for a couple of days too many.

And in all the tussle, the server got knocked over, which is why the forums were down for a few days.

It was shocking and shameful, really, and I hope Dave doesn't come round for another few hours because slandering him is proving to be quite fun.  :D

Dave finally pried himself away from the hooker pile and the cocaine trough long enough to give us the final stats. So without further slander and or libel, here they are:

Number of bundles sold: 1074

Largest amount donated: $99.99

Average donation: $3.87

Number of donations $5 or below: 855 (79%)

Number of donations $20 or above: 35 (3%)

Total earned: $4191.98

Considering I was hopeful we might raise 300 dollars, this is an astoundingly big success. Truly, a day that will live in AGS history forever. My thanks to all the bakers and to everyone who supported us and cheered us on.

Thank you, AGS Community. You are truly a bunch of wonderful people!  :D

Videos for Fragment and Abner the Amazing are also in the works now, Red Volition, unfortunately, not (for various reasons). Back with final updates on this matter SOON!

Sweet! One stop closer to a complete record of our moment of awesomeness.

But Tenacious Stu wouldn't sit in on this? Come on, Stu! Do it for the children!  (nod)

Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you: FRAGMENT
http://youtu.be/DzEsNawUqHI

I'll see if I can get Ben to give me some comments of his to add as well.

This is probably the last of the Bake Sale Let's Plays, as Red Volition has now bugged out on me more times than I can count and I just can't finish it. In fact I can't even finish the first level without it either crashing or getting stuck or something... :( I'll give it one more shot, though...

Yup, thanks WHAM. And thank you for adding in my comments! Now Ben has to sit through the video and follow either what's happening in the game, what you are talking about at that moment or what I wrote in my comments, and then write comments himself - what a lovely way to spend an extended afternoon!

Thanks WHAM for doing an LP, but man, how will I fit writing comments for it in between drag racing all the guys, sweet talking all the girls and playing rock and roll like I just don't care?

I guess I will have to squeeze it into my otherwise busy and important schedule at some point! Boy, do I need a root beer float!

Sigh. Poor Ben.  (wrong)  I remember when it was all about the games for him. Then he discovered girls and got hooked on the root beer.  It will all end in tears, I just know it. :~(

Is there any way I could still buy these games?  I feel a little silly, I meant to pick these up and I promoted them on mixnmojo and on my blog, but I forgot about it until the bundle was over. :/

Sorry, JenniBee. But when the sale ended, we took down the order page and closed the store.  :(

But don't despair. Next March, the rights to all the games revert to their original creators. I know many of them (perhaps all) are planning on releasing their games to the public for free when that time comes. I know I am.

Until then, I'm sorry you missed the sale. But thank you so much for promoting us over at Mixnmojo (still one of my favorite sites on the interwebs) and helping to make our fundraiser a success.  :)

That's good to know.  Can't wait to get a chance to play at least most of these games. :)

No problem. :)  I'll definitely do the same if you decide to do it again, although next time I'll be sure to donate myself before the bake sale ends. :)

This place is a party, but when the Bake Sale tool place I was at the kitchen...

I read that the game authors are free to re-release their games a year after the Sale. Is there any information which author will do so? I hate sounding like a freeloader, but I watched several Let's Plays and would love to get the games!
Also, since almost a year has passed, will there be another Sale?

I plan to release mine. I think Ghost is also planning to do the same. I don't know about the others.

As far as another Bake Sale goes, we're talking about it behind the scenes, but no firm plans exist yet. When they do, we'll let the community know.

I plan to do a free release of Indiana Rodent, and possibly a sequel too.
