Title: Kathy Rain
Post by: JSH on Tue 17/07/2012 23:51:32
[embed=960,540]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oxhUgUhq3g[/embed]

She is riding her motorcycle, speeding quickly through the desert. The bike lets out a roar. The wind is caressing her hair, struggling to free itself at the back of her helmet. She is wearing red-tinted sunglasses and a black leather jacket. Her face is displaying a subtle smile, reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. Extensive mods and ornaments decorate her bike. "Katmobile" is engraved in script onto a metal detail upon the front. This bike is her baby, that's for sure.

Oh, how she loves being on the road. Yet, when thrashing through the highway veering across the vast desert countryside, this day is strangely bitter sweet for Kathy Rain. "How did it ever come to this?", she thought sullenly. "Returning to my roots after all this time. God, it's not like me. But I owe it to him. To those sad eyes and warm hands. I owe it to that stubborn kid I used to be."

Kathy Rain tells the compelling story of a strong-willed college girl with a knack for detective work and a Harley who returns to her hometown after being gone since childhood. Set in the 90's, Kathy starts investigating a local mystery and the legacy of her recently deceased grandfather.

As she follows a trail of clues he left behind, questions emerge... What was Joseph Rain really looking for that night all those years ago? What turned him into a mere shell of a man, confined to a wheelchair? What secret did a suicidal young artist take with her to the grave, and why are so many people in Conwell Springs going mad? The truth is dark and sinister...

Shane "ProgZmax" Stevens - Art direction, character art and animation
Nauris Krauze - Background art
Tove Bergqvist - Portrait art
Daniel Kobylarz - Music
Dave Gilbert - VO Direction

Progress:

Story/Puzzles - 100%
Scripting - 100%
Graphics - 100%
SFX/Music - 100%

Development Diary:

July 17th, 2012
Publically announced the project.

July 31th, 2012
Core team assembled, all positions filled.

November 29th, 2012
The project is progressing slowly but steadily. Tove Bergqvist joined the team to help out with the portraits. New art style revealed!

February 16th, 2013
Daniel Kobylarz joins the team as the composer. Added a few new screens and updated some old ones with the latest art changes. Started early with some VO auditions for the lead parts.

October 5th, 2013
The project is still very much alive and moving forward. Now cranking up the pace, hoping for a 2014 release!

February 2nd, 2014
Development goes forward with the first chapter of the game nearing a releasable state. Unfortunately, a 2014 release starts to look slightly optimistic. Late 2014 is still the target, but a possible postponement to 2015 is likely. Negotiations with different distribution partners have been initiated.

April 24th, 2014
There's been some good progress since the last update! Day one is in very good shape, Day two is fully playable from beginning to end, and work has begun on Day three. Also started to look for more testers.

January 18th, 2015
The game is a few months away from alpha, with most of the game being playable now. A 2015 release looks possible, but can't be guaranteed due to external dependencies. An indie publisher startup based in Stockholm has expressed interest in the game and could be a possible future partner.

April 22nd, 2015
A publishing agreement for Kathy Rain has been signed with Raw Fury Games! The initial release of the game will be for Windows and Mac, on Steam and most other common digital distribution channels.

April 6th, 2016
Announced a release date! A detective is born on May 5th, 2016!

Oooh, placeholders...
Might sound strange, but I do actually love the look of it just as it is, Krusbert.
A more simplistic graphical approach, a style of it's own.
That highway scene looks very, very cool!

Will be definitely on the lookout for this one.

I remember you showing interest in AGS, it's good to see that you got a AGS project going, Krusbert.
The story sounds interesting and I would have offered to help if I had any free time to spare.

Good luck, keep us updated! :)

The simplistic style is nice, even though you see it as placeholder at the moment. If you decide to go for another style I wish you good luck with finding artists/animators for your team.

I'm really glad you guys like it! :) We'll see how it turns out, the issue for me is not only the quality of the graphics, but the time involved in creating them. An experienced artist would be able to produce not only art of a higher overall quality, but at a much greater pace than myself. If I did it all on my own I would need time to learn all the necessary aspects of drawing, animating and then spend a large amount of time on actually creating the assets. It would take more than a few years to get there judging by other similar one man projects, and I want to get the game out within a reasonable timeframe. I'm still not completely disregarding doing it all by myself but the plan right now is to try to involve a few more people.

Thanks Daniel, I'll be updating this thread regularly. Best of luck with your own project!

On a side note I rewrote the synopsis, it was too long and unfocused. The new one should be clearer and hopefully more thought provoking.

I am very excited to announce the newly assembled core team of Kathy Rain!

Shane "ProgZmax" Stevens - You heard me! I feel very lucky to have the sprite master himself on board. He will be making character designs and animations.
Nauris Krauze - The man behind the gorgeous backgrounds in Resonance! I was most fortunate to get Nauris signed up for creating the environments of Kathy Rain.
Sten Oom - A friend of mine, a newcomer in this field but with a serious talent for lifelike movement, Sten will be helping out with some additional animation!
Joel "Krusbert" Staaf Hästö - Lastly, I will reintroduce myself. When I'm not at my daily job I will continue working like a madman on story, puzzles, game design, coding and overall project management of Kathy Rain.

*edit Now it's Kathy actually! :D

Sounds very promising, and with such a great team I'm sure it will turn out to be a splendid game!

I actually really like the simplistic look of the now-placeholder screenshots - some really nice colour choices there, but if it's going to be even better - well, I'm all for it. :)

Really looking forward to this - best of luck!

Hi everybody, the project is progressing slowly but steadily!

Got some new screenies for your viewing pleasure in the original post, courtesy of Nauris and Shane! :)

We also have a new addition to the team: Tove Bergqvist, a promising young art student who has been helping us out with the character portraits. You can see her excellent work displayed in my forum avatar!

Wow, I must say I'm almost speechless by the responses! This is a real motivational booster, thanks a ton everybody!

Daniel - There is a good reason for the dalahorse actually, stay tuned for the demo to have it explained :)

Selmiak - Nice catch with the doors! Turns out the one between the hall and the living room is not consistent and will have to be flipped in one of them. You just earned yourself a spot on the beta testers team if you want it ;)

Surdy - That's a real generous offer, I might take you up on that later on! :)

ThreeOhFour - That's just fantastic! I never thought Ben himself would be interested in my game, in these early stages no less! Now I'm truly feeling the pressure to deliver something awesome ;)

splat44 - I'm glad you see the resemblance to GK, the series are a big influence on the game. :)

A disclaimer about beta testing though, it's not gonna happen for a while, this game is still in the early stages after all. Same thing with VO. I'll definitely write you guys up as interested though!

Vince - Happy to see that you like it! It's quite a funny coincidence with the art team, I contacted a lot of different people about the project, Nauris and Shane just happened to be the best fit for the game. Maybe we chose them for similar reasons, given that I'm a professional programmer financing the game with my own savings much like yourself. :)

In any case, you just added to the pressure just by being Vince and giving this game some attention! ;)

Looks great! I like the old-school precision and attention to detail with which the backgrounds are drawn.

My problem is that just looking at the title character makes me want to slap her. I guess I'm done with the goth-biker-rebel archetype - I find it extremely shallow and annoying. And reading that Kathy is supposed to be "sassy" doesn't give me much reassurance... it screams "self-important immature bitch" at me :). But that's just me, I'm sure she will be well-liked by most players. Good luck with the game, it really does look awesome!

It's interesting that someone would feel like this, because I find the Kathy character is the main thing that's drawn me to this game- I just fell in love with her instantly!:)

But go easy on Gabriel Knight influences- I tried playing Gabriel Knight last week for the first time ever and one thing that hit me was how boring it was! I named my son Gabriel and almost felt obliged to like that game for that reason (and the fact that it's everyone's favourite adventure game)... but I just couldn't bring myself to. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should try to give it as much of its own identity as possible- with a team like this I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake! :)

Glad to hear the opposite about Kathy from you Grim! I just played through The Cat Lady yesterday and enjoyed it immensly, Mitzi actually reminded me in a few ways of how I envision Kathy! :) I even tried looking up her voice actress for a potential role in my game because I thought she was so great. The voice actors in The Cat Lady were superb overall imo.

I agree about GK1 being very slow paced, and many people probably remember it with those oh so convenient rose tinted glasses of nostalgia :). It's hard to deny it's a great game though, one of my favorites still, but my intention with Kathy Rain is certainly not be derivative. Kathy Rain has many influences, your own game even being one of them as I got a few cool ideas when playing!

Perhaps I was a bit too harsh. I believe Kathy herself could be likeable as a game character, it's just that in reality, people with her characteristics are often unbearable :).

Hey, that's awesome, man!:) Her name's Brittany and last I heard she said she's always up for new fun experiences like this (and apparently she's getting a new state of the art microphone for Christmas, so that'll be extremely useful too). Ask mOds if you'd like to get in touch with her. I'd love to use Mitzi's character again in one of my future projects... but for obvious reasons (to those who played TCL), I can't... so being able to see another game character in some degree inspired by her would be fantastic;)

Why don't you show us some more of Kathy Rain? You know, I'm really looking forward to this game!;)

Cool, I'll have a word with m0ds even though VO won't be something touched upon until much later. I think Brittany could be a nice fit for a wide range of different roles in the game, but I believe she would be a particularly good candidate for an important supporting character. :)

Just because you asked so nicely I've added a fourth screenshot to the original post!

Alright people, it's about time for an update. Check the original post for a quick summary :)

The game is rapidly moving forward, I made a commitment to crank up the pace after new years and a lot of things have happened in very short time. The first chapter of the game is really starting to shape up now!

We also started early with VO auditions for the two most crucial roles, Kathy herself and her roommate Eileen. If you know of any good young female voice actors, feel free to direct them to me. We have a few solid candidates already but the more the merrier!

Lastly, we have a new additions to the team, please give him a warm welcome!

Daniel Kobylarz - Composer

Wow.  Looks like you have a stellar team working on this game, and the background artwork is amazing, really beautiful.  Reminds me of the Blackwell games.  Do you have an estimated release date?

Excited about the storyline too--looks like you get to get in a bit of trouble whilst solving the mystery, I like it!!

Edit: ok, reading back in December that the game is in "early" stages, I'll quit pestering about a release date...;)  Still though, eagerly anticipating it!

Hi again all, sorry for being so quiet lately!

Stupot+ and SarahLiz - I'm glad you like it! Regarding release date and demo - It's gonna take a good while, I'd say late 2014, but I might have to eat those words :)

The production has slowed down a bit, mainly due to the IRL conditions for myself(switching jobs, new town), also the game is starting to reach the point where I want the whole game to be planned from beginning to end before moving any further. We're putting all our efforts now into nailing the story to 100%.

I just wanted to let you all know that the project is still very much alive and moving forward. I'm fully settled down at the new job now so I'm once again comfortable with devoting almost all of my free time to the project. I started involving more people for early testing and feedback and I've gotten a ton of good input, the game is improving by the day!

The current target is a 2014 release, but please don't bring out the torches and pitchforks if the... unfathomable happens :)

What's the estimated price for this? Going to be going through vendors like Phoenix?

Wow, that's a good question. The price will depend on a lot of things I'd say, like how the game will be distributed and to what extent a publisher will be involved. The business part, i.e. actually selling the game is a future headache I've only begun to scratch the surface of. Right now we're focusing purely on developing the game and making it everything it deserves to be.

At some point during next year I'll probably try to involve a business partner of some kind to deal with sales, distribution and marketing. My ambition is to get the game on steam, which I think I'll be able to pull off, I've worked in the game industry for some time now and my gut feeling is that I know some guy who knows some guy. I may be overconfident though and the game might very well get stuck in greenlight hell and then primarily distributed through other channels. I doubt there will be any physical copies, most likely digital download only.

But to get back to the pricing. If I would make a very rough educated guess based purely on things like length and production values and compare to similar games, I'd say it will probably be in line with releases from Wadjet Eye Games, most likely a standard $9.99 priced indie game, but we'll see.

And yeah, before you ask, the 2014 release estimate is assuming that distribution is handled smoothly without any major delays. I could be underestimating the work involved, it's very much possible that we'd have to push the release date. I'll keep you guys in the loop!

I'd say fairly high, probably higher than getting on steam as gog.com seem to have a smoother submission process. They've started to take steps lately to build good relations with indie devs to compete with greenlight. If I would take a wild guess I'd say the game will probably be released initially on a dedicated website using some kind of third party payment solution, then gog.com, and lastly steam. But of course, all of this is of course highly dependant on any potentially involved publisher, they'll want a say in how and when the game is distributed where :)

Thanks guys, glad to hear you like it! :)

I'll seize the moment to give a quick update. The development is steadily progressing, the first chapter of the game is very polished now and subsequent chapters are slowly starting to take shape. However, a 2014 release is beginning to look slightly optimistic. We're still doing our best to hit the target, but to avoid disappointment I'd rather be upfront with the fact that we may be facing a 2015 release.

Also worth noting is that I am in contact with a few different distribution partners, so hopefully the publishing part will resolve itself soon!

Will do! Crowdfunding is definitely something being considered, but most likely wouldn't be Kickstarter specifically since it's restricted to US citizens. A european alternative such as IndieGogo is more likely.

However, successful crowdfunding is a big undertaking since one pretty much has to create a marketing campaign to properly support it. We'll need more or less final gameplay footage, recorded voice acting, preferably a nice trailer etc, which requires some of the more exciting areas of the game to be complete to create enough trailer moments. Maybe I'm a bit overambitious, but it's definitely way too overwhelming to pull off at this point. Eventually though, absolutely! :)

I don't think I've posted to say how fantastic this looks!

But since crowdfunding has been mentioned I just want to say this: If you can find a way to use Kickstarter - use Kickstarter! It has a much bigger community than Indiegogo, and with a good looking game like this you'll get huge support from complete strangers. It's open to UK bank accounts as well as US.

Thanks Ali! Yeah, I definitely will use Kickstarter if I can, but it may be a bit of a struggle with me being located in Sweden. I'll be sure to research possible workarounds for the financial restrictions, hopefully there is some way of solving the problems.

Thanks man! Sorry about the delays everyone, but I'd prefer Kathy Rain to come a bit late and live up to it's full potential rather than rush it out on pure principle. (btw, huge grats on your own release!) About the last part: Hush, hush! ;)

And yeah, update time! The development is going quite well, the first Day (chapter) of the game is pretty much done and won't be changed much except for VO, minor dialogue tweaks and a few lingering placeholder assets. Day two of the game has seen rapid progress and is now fully playable from beginning to end. I have thus moved on to Day three, which is in progress with some bare boned areas but lacking much in terms of puzzles.

Given the recent progress I have decided to bring in a bunch of more people for testing. If you are a dedicated, long term tester who want a chance to influence the development of Kathy Rain along with a place in the credits and a copy of the game, look no further! Just send me a pm with your email adress and you will be sent monthly newsletters with stable builds up until the release of the game.

*edit Got enough help now, thanks!

I'm certain it has opened up in the Netherlands not long ago. So maybe Sweden aswell?

Anyway, great looking project. I hope you and your team are succesfull, one way or the other.

When I try to start up a project on the website it says: "Project creation is currently open to creators in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Netherlands". So I'm guessing I'd have to get help from some kind of third party to make it happen, that's probably how those other swedish projects did it. Anyways, thanks for the kind words!

Alright, time for an update!

The development of the game has been progressing slowly but steadily, with the majority of the game being playable now. Still can't call it an alpha, but it shouldn't be too many months away. I have some excellent testers on board now, but I need a few more still so if you feel so inclined, do let me know via pm.

Since I've been wrong before, I will not try to estimate a release date again until I am absolutely positive about the matter. When the game has reached alpha and I have a signed distribution deal with a publisher I should be able to provide a clearer answer.

On a related note, previous publisher contacts haven't really panned out, but an indie publisher startup has expressed interest in Kathy Rain. Stay tuned for news concerning that this coming spring, when they are up and running at full capacity.

I figured you've been busy and I've been busy and KR isn't near finished yet so "not panned out" was more like "simply not ready yet" ? At no point have I personally called it off or said "not interested", do keep that in mind! :=

I wonder if that indie publisher that isn't in full phase yet is Fireflowers new venture?

That said, even I think KR should be released by WEG... :-D

Hi guys, I'm excited to announce that I've signed a publishing agreement with Raw Fury Games! :)

Check them out here: http://rawfury.com/

This have made me confident enough to resign and go full time with my one man studio, Clifftop Games. My last day at my current employer is a week from now. What this means is that a 2015 release of Kathy Rain is more likely, but of course still not guaranteed in any way as it depends on many different factors.

However, I can divulge that the initial release will be for Windows and Mac, and that the game will be available on Steam and most other common digital distribution channels. No physical copies are planned at this stage. Lastly, Kathy Rain is planned to be exhibited at a few conventions this spring/summer, stay tuned for more information!

The Kathy Rain t-shirts are in very limited supply and dev only at the moment, and the Lollapalooza '95 ones we gave out at the convention were limited edition for PAX only. However, we will definitely offer t-shirts and possibly other merch post release! :)

Not much, he just played for a few short minutes, but he said that it was a nice game, and wondered what resolution it ran at. I said that it's running in 320x240, and he mentioned that Double Fine had been criticized for NOT going the pixel art route with Broken Age. Who knew we were such purists ;)

I also mentioned how we had a small Full Throttle easter egg in the trailer, and he commented on the fact that FT actually came out in '95, which was a total coincidence, but a bit funny that it matches the exact year. We had a little chat after that but I don't remember the specifics, I was pretty star struck at the time :)

Oh, and for those of you who missed PAX and want to catch a glimpse of some gameplay footage, you can see a super nervous twitch stream with yours truly here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1aIWLyWweA&index=5&list=PLm8yoB4wa1_ubrX22GVtFkxB78hmjNV5k)!

Okay, time for a small update!

We have recently reached a crucial milestone, as the game is finally fully playable from beginning to end! This means that we'll be ramping up the testing to help balance the puzzles and find bugs, all the way up until release next year.

If you are interested in helping out as a beta tester in exchange for a free copy of the game and a spot in the credits, send me your email adress in a private message and we'll take it from there!

Also, we have found a suitable partner to help us out with the planned voice overs. Stay tuned for more information when we start the casting process!

Lastly, I will be attending AdventureX this year, along with my publisher, Raw Fury Games. It's yet to be determined what our presence will look like exactly, but I'll let you guys know as soon as we figure that out!

I'm wanting to buy this on steam but there's no purchase button to click on.

This is the second game today that is missing the "purchase" button.
Mafia 2 is the other ,though i think that was pulled from the steam sales due to licensing issues.

Yup, the game has a store page, but it's not out yet :) You can add it to your wishlist and follow the page though to stay up to date! Current estimated release window is Spring 2016.

If you want to help support the game, I'd appreciate if you wishlisted the game, it will help with steam visibility. You can also add any user tags you deem appropriate for the game to help it show up in relevant searches, and maybe write a post in the steam game forum if you're looking forward to the game :) Thanks in advance, it helps a lot!

Can we still hope to see Kathy Rain on GOG?

The game looks amazing, but I won't buy it, if it's only on steam.
Like so many others, I dislike steam and steam-DRM.

Yup, the game will be on gog.com, but they don't have any pre-release pages on their site, so there won't be any information about the game there prior to release. I'd suggest that you either keep track of this thread or sign up for the raw fury newsletter at www.rawfury.com (http://rawfury.com/) (scroll down), and we'll let you know when the game is available :)

Not too late, I plan to add a fresh batch of testers at some point this month! Steam is a requirement for all beta testers though, since we use that for secure build distribution.

To anyone who is interested in helping out with the testing: Please send me a pm with your email adress and we'll take it from there.

Oh, I had PM'd you about beta testing the game.  But if steam is a requirement, I'll have to back out.  Pity.

This is beautiful from what I can see. I've got it followed, and wish-listed on steam, when can we expect it to be on store?

On a developmental note, why 320x240? Isn't that a bit, square? Seems a bit counter-intuitive since most screens fit a more rectangular aspect of 16:9 ? (i.e. 320x180.) Not that I'm complaining mind you, more to love. I'm just curious.

Thanks! Spring 2016 is as close as we can say with certainty right now, for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Heh, 320x240, that's just me not thinking ahead way back in 2011 :) I didn't really give it too much thought at the time, and it stuck with the project until it was way too late to change it. If I make another game after KR it will definitely use a widescreen aspect ratio.

Thanks guys, everyone who sent a pm has been sent a key, we have enough testers for now!

On a separate note, I'm psyched to announce that Dave Gilbert himself will be helping us out with the voice overs! He'll be overseeing studio recordings in NYC, making sure that our voices get the Wadjet Eye Games stamp of approval!

More info here! http://rawfury.com/kathy-rain-voiceover-auditions-have-begun/ (http://rawfury.com/kathy-rain-voiceover-auditions-have-begun/)

The casting is ongoing as we speak, can't wait to share some of the incredible auditions we've had sent our way with you guys! :D

As great of an actor as he is, I actually feel exactly the same. Abe IS Joey to me, and won't be joining the cast this time around :) You might recognize some of the other names though!

Abe sadly didn't audition! Abe is the type of guy I usually cast ahead of time, or someone I write parts specifically FOR. Since that obviously wasn't the case, he didn't know about the audition when the time came. So no Abe this time around.

This will prove to be an interesting challenge, since I'll directing VO for a game I neither wrote nor produced. Eager to see how it turns out!

Alright people, after all these years it's finally time to mark your calendars! :D

Kathy Rain will be out on Steam and gog.com for Windows and Mac on May 5th, 2016!

Check out the new and improved trailer below, voiced by none other than Arielle Siegel, a Wadjet Eye regular mostly known for her part as Max Lao in Technobabyon! :)

Kathy Rain will also be exhibited at PAX EAST in Boston, MA on April 22-24, 2016, in the Indie MEGABOOTH right across from Thimbleweed Park! Two great adventures for one, so be sure to stop by and play the fully voiced KR demo! Sadly, yours truly won't be attending since I am hard at work at finalizing Kathy Rain, but I'll leave you in the very capable hands of my cohorts at Raw Fury Games!

Not true all, Cass. It's also on GOG (https://www.gog.com/game/kathy_rain), DRM-free. Steam-only wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, but I prefer to get my adventure games -- classic or new -- on GOG.
