Title: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: on Fri 13/09/2013 10:59:13
As you know, sometimes we manage to choose and feature a pick of the month, and try and do this monthly. But it's not always possible.

So why not open it up to the community, which game would you choose as pick of the month, and why? If you write the title, link and up to 100 words describing why you would pick said game (what's good about it, why does it deserve your pick etc), we may very well feature it, so that we can keep a new one up each month. As you'll notice there has not been a pick for September yet.

The only rule is: Don't pick your own or your team's game (or one you had direct involvement with)!

When we can't do it, we'll refer to the community pick. So get picking!

Thank you :)

Is there a list of the games "allowed" in?

Hi Miguel - any game in the AGS database qualifies :)

Games that perhaps didn't get much attention or weren't really spotlighted when they were released, though something made them stand out to you perhaps :) Or, if you just want to discuss games that were perhaps under-rated on release or such that's fine. This topic can be used for people to discuss games they would pick and why, even if they don't intend for it to be used on the picks feature of the site ;)

Ah, okay,
I thought that pick of the month was about games made in the month that it refers or recent to that month. And that they would be showcasing AGS capabilities in order to grab new devs.
Title: Re: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: on Fri 13/09/2013 11:47:39
Nope not really, though it has often happened where the release and the pick have happened close together (just the way people play some of the newer games more than the older ones I guess...) So this is basically just a request for contribution to one of the site's actual features, top of the page here - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/ :) Your chance to be credited for a Pick of the Month! If it's a good one of course ;)

A question: Was only AGS Rating Panel allowed to choose Pick of the Month, previously?

There was a pick of the month long before there was a ratings panel, so I don't think so. Handling of it seemed to pass around a lot even before.

That's right, single members did it for long periods before, then the ratings panel started adding to it once the functionality of the site switched over to AGA, and now the community can. There's no reason not to, providing people make some half decent picks!! :D

We really need to do a drive for some new panel raters soon too, cos people get busy...

Thanks for the answers, Babar and Mods :).

@Mods: I'll not disappoint you with my pick (or at least I like to pretend so! (laugh))

Ancient Alien is the game which I'm considering to put forward. But then, there are some games which I had started to play and remain to be completed. I'll submit my entry for consideration after completing those games :).

You're right. I've seen many games in the database which were released more than one year ago and still they are not rated by AGS Panel. I also found a special case where a demo was rated for players, won the best demo of year award but it still wasn't rated by the panel. Yes, I'm talking about CaptainD's demo game here.

I would like to join the AGS Ratings Panel as I've quite a free time on my hand, after all, what else you can expect from a college student ;)? Too bad, I joined the forums only 5 months ago :~(.

Adeel - thanks for the mention mate, but I'm pretty sure demos don't get rated by the panel at all, just full games?
Title: Re: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: LimpingFish on Fri 13/09/2013 19:24:46
That's right. No demos get rated.

As to potential panel members, the process usually begins with moderators and existing panelists contacting those members who they feel would be suitable for the job. If you approached, it's because you have proven yourself reliable, level-headed, and a positive contributor to the community.

There is no truth to the rumor that panelists are chosen by competing in inter-species gladiatorial contests...yet. ¬¬

To be honest, I were 50-50 about demos being rated. I even checked the Rating Panel Information Thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=39821.0) and there was no mention of Demos not being rated.

I've a feeling that I had read somewhere that demos are not rated by the panel but at the moment, I can't recall where I had read that.

Sorry for that.

Thanks for clarifying guys..! :)

Since no-one seems to want to start the ball rolling... (this is completely without coercion from Miguel!!(laugh) - this is the game that I enjoyed most from the recent batch of releases):

My pick for this month is: Ancient Aliens - The Roots of Time

I guess part of the reason I chose this game is because of where it seems to be headed as well as what it is - being the first episode of a series, it's pretty short.  However the aesthetics were wonderful, the puzzles were very well implemented, and the characters / story certainly made me want to see what happens in the next episode.  It's not perfect - the pixel hunting in one location frustrated me a little and the innuendo was unnecessary - but the game as a whole was extremely enjoyable and a very promising set up for what looks set to be an epic sci-fi adventure set on a background of jazz music.

"Ancient Aliens - The Roots of Time follows the exploits of a jazz musician whose life turns upside down when his father dies.  It's a traumatic event in itself. but when people start showing up and and being intensely interested in the research that his father had sent him, things start to get complicated.  Can the beautiful woman who claims to have been a colleague of his father's be trusted?  Who are the henchmen who are now after him?  Just what is his father's mysterious research project that can apparently change the world anyway?

Beautiful graphics, a moody jazz soundtrack and intelligent puzzles make this an encouraging start to what promises to be a very interesting game series.  There is some unnecessary innuendo and the game is admittedly very short, but it's highly enjoyable and certainly makes you want to find out what's happening in the next episode."

Is that okay Cat?

I vote for Sepulchre (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=48912.msg636466543#msg636466543).
Here's what I think about this game:

Just finished this game, and I enjoyed it mostly because of the cool setting and ambiance. It kept me going until I knew what the hell was going on that train!
The mood is scary like twilight zone scary and the moving bag gave me the shivers.
Backgrounds art and character art are all high quality and the music was fitting for the genre and slow tempo of the game.
Voice work was a nice asset to the game, it's always cool to have them. I'd say they do the job well.
I could have had more story given to me but after playing it I didn't feel disappointed regarding that aspect.
There's a unsettling feeling along the game that kind of transported to "The Shining" movie and that is something hard to achieve with a minimalistic structure like Sepulchre. Bravo!
The puzzles weren't really puzzles in difficulty but simply a way to "hold" the player from completion and I think this was the only "weak" point of this game.
There are some easily fixed bugs as well that were already mentioned but nothing that really stopped my immersion on the plot.

My overall feeling of the game was pretty good and I wish it could have be longer. Although every minute of it is played with that good uncertainty and thrill. A good short game with high quality production that every one should play.

Thanks Miguel, certainly happy to go with your pick, but perhaps you could write a shorter summary more in the style of the writing for other picks? Just a general overview rather than a breakdown of each element?

It seems the suggestions so far have been mostly the obvious choices - games that people are likely to download and play anyway. I'd like people to use this opportunity to bring up the hidden gems of the database.

I wanted to suggest "Emily Enough: Imprisoned" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/602/) for Pick of the month. :)
Played it long ago though, probably it is worth to replay and see if I still like it... ummm... enough (heh).
(But it has a pretty high rating anyway)

I vote for Skumring (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1674/). It doesn't seem to have much plays (at least on this database), nor does it have a rating yet.

Quote from: About the gameWhen a beautiful dame in distress enters gumshoe Cooper Chutney's office, asking for help to investigate her husbands infidelity, something didn't seem right. Why would anyone cheat on such beautiful broad, he thought? Little did he know that this seemingly simple case would lead him down a spiral into the darkest depths of Port Horizon.

SeamanNaranja's Skumring is a 1950's Noir point and click adventure set in the sleepless city of Port Horizon. A city on the verge of moral collapse.

Step into the shoes of a PI yearning to prove himself in this slick, contemporary tale of gangsters, greed and goons.

With classic comic book-esque cutscenes, full voice acting, varied jazz/classical soundtrack, intelligent writing and 3+ hours of gameplay, this is certainly a must play for any adventure gamer.

Probably could be written about better, but it's all I got right now ;).

If you could turn back time, what would you do differently? You are Elle, a young and naive wizard's apprentice on your way for your routine potions lesson. As you arrive to bask in the glory of your teacher's infinite knowledge, the last thing you expect is for your trusty mentor to be overcome and kidnapped by none other than an evil warlock! Worse still, you end up locked up in his house yourself! Well, kind of. By use of your intuition, and with the help of a boisterous dragon, you must find a way to rescue your tutor and discover the mystique of the Time Stone in this modern day throw-back adventure, reminiscent of 90's adventure gaming's heyday. The fate of the world is in your hands...

Ponch,
iconic master pieces more often become cult artwork than something praised by the common folk.

With no benefit whatsoever for me I invite every reader of this thread to try out the Barn Runner series. Why?
Because its creator is a talented cow artist with broad skills from design, artwork and story telling.
If you still wonder why to play the Barn Runner series, then don't forget that the cow creator draws the most perfect boobs ever made in video game history.

I always thought of Pick of the Month as a sort of showcase of cool games you might've missed when they came out, or that may have slipped through the cracks, so I don't see why The Bunker should be too old to be acceptable.

Okay, here follows a teaser if whoever is in charge and Ponch of course approves of it.

Initially a parody of Blade Runner, as it progresses it forms into something else entirely. Ponch released a few episodic short games, before releasing Barn Runner: Forever Friday Part 1, showing that the universe was already well-fleshed. Words and sentiments, can't describe the craftsmanship that Ponch will always deny, if ever attributed concerning the story elements resolving around the Barn Runner Universe. As Pythagoras once said "The beginning is half of the whole", and this holds true for the Armageddon Eclair. Sci-fi dystopian neo-noir 80s retro good-cop vs bad-cop boogie dance anti-hero SAGA; or Barn Runner.

Because it takes time and effort for one to be chosen, and nobody's done it!

Yes indeed. I set a new pick of the month now because there were no suggestions in this thread. If you want to see a certain game here as pick of May, please post here and write a nice teaser.

If so: I nominate "Tales"!

A new month!

I'm not too happy about demos being chosen, but we also had them before, I guess. Maybe pick "Donald Dowell" from the same author instead?

Anyway, if someone writes a nice teaser, I'll set the new pick.

I will once again push the Bunker (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/577/).

Great, just great. These days a man can't play golf without a wizard miniaturizing him! Thank you Manlocke, now I am stuck in this bunker!
The garish palette of this game will immediately bring you back to the 90s, along with some great humor, a desert to explore, sassy skulls and many other quite talkative but less than cooperative characters.
Help Ronan club his way out of the bunker!

It's an exquisite game, but it's old too; take it not as a proposal, but just as a "filler", in case nobody comes up with anything.

I hope this promo will be up for the next selection candidate then:

Donald sat with glazed eyes. He was retired. He rocked in his chair. His wife shouted at him to paint the fence. He rocked. He read his favorite books over and over. His wife shouted at him to do something, anything. Donald rocked. And as he rocked a spark grew under the chair in which he sat. With every rock the spark found kindling in the recesses of his still youthful mind. That kindling grew into a fire which could not be stopped. Donald knew he had to go back to work! But not just any old menial work. The work he had dreamed of since he was a kid! Donald stood up from his rocker. And then at last: HE ROCKED!

Second ACRONYM.

Obligatory blurb:

"Orion needs milk, and it needs it in the next 12 hours! A challenging boardgame, ACRONYM is a testament to AGS versatility. Battle, outwit, charm or use-alien-technology on pesky earthlings, abduct bovines, make it back to spaceship before time is up. Be prepared to restart often: strategy, tactics and a bit of luck are needed to get those precious proteins!"

Here I am with a teaser for Mudlarks, as promised, cat :-)

Mudlarks is a story of friendship, hidden secrets, and ghosts. Two friends are searching for treasures on the banks of the River Thames when they find a mysterious golden locket, containing old photos of a woman and a teenage girl. Days later, one of the friends, Vincent, goes missing - and it's up to you, Winston, to find him. The search will drag Winston into a world of paranormal and historical intrigue in a well written story, with interesting and varied puzzles. This is a full length game which has a unique quirky graphics and animation style, and gives the player the sense of something very strange happening under the surface of normality. Do give it a try!

Sorry for being a bit late :D

I just wanted to point out that the latest (December) Pick of the Month game -  Aidas Strange Christmas - can't be downloaded. It was hosted on Game Front, but when trying to download, it says that the file can't be found, and there seem to be no alternative download options. I have already reported it on the game page, but as this title is quite visible right now, I thought I would also post about it here.

I don't know whether there are other games in the backlog, I am writing this
small stub so you can use it when you will see fit.

Sisyphus Reborn (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1863/)

A short game which explores the themes of life, eternity and the meaning
of our actions. An example of what the adventure game medium can achieve without
losing its characteristics, teeming with ideas but not overwhelming the player.

Visitor 3 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=51985.0)! Played it, loved it the the most of the Visitor trilogy. Another one that You might want to take a look at is The Knobbly Crook (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=51987.0) -- I haven't played that one yet, so I can't say anything about it (other than that it has insanely gorgeous graphics!).

"The third installment of the darkly comedic series about Moss -- the universe's most accidentally lucky field agent -- sends him on his most dangerous mission yet. Visitor 3 is bigger, better, funnier -- and scarier. There's lots of green blood, pink goo, black tentacles and other terrifying appendages -- and a head in a jar that's not only quite friendly, but also not at all fazed by its current situation."

There is only one option for june's pick: Camp 1 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1924/). An instant classic if there ever was one.

Life at Camp 1, a geological trial drilling site, hasn't been easy in the past . But, somehow, things got even worse. What kind of future will await the four inmates of the camp?

"Camp 1" is an outstanding science fiction game. Every single aspect is excellent. Fantastic visuals, intense atmosphere, clever puzzles, wonderful colours - the limited palette works really well. Anyone who hasn't played this yet, go and do so. You'll love it.

(If you're going to pick this: Asking a natural speaker to have a look at my ramblings might be a good idea .  ;)
Or better: have someone write a bit more about the story. I'm not good with that kind of thing.)

I'm nominating "Jacqueline White; Bad Trouble in the Red Desert" for the pick of the month (for October as I heard from cat) and here is my blurb:
Quote
Books are just words, right? Movies are just single frames played really fast, right? AGS games are just a bunch of rooms and objects, characters, and whatever tied together by some code, right?

We all know how each works, especially AGS, but sometimes....and only sometimes in a very long while...somebody manages to combine the words in a book, the frames of a movie, or the structure of AGS in just the right way to create magic...

The magic where the reader/viewer/player starts to forget the interface of words/images/game and makes the jump from their everyday reality into the world that the author has created for them...

This game falls solidly into the category of such magic...

The story, characters, gameplay, mystery, intrigue of this game just grabbed me instantly by the short and curlies and propelled me forwards. There was never a moment when I lost interest in knowing what the story was going to throw my way next...

And the puzzles: OMG BRILLIANT!!! Foreshadowing and logic used perfectly in almost every case!!!

I think that The Unprintable MAGENTA has to be played more than it has been played so far, so I wrote a teaser:

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's a girl that turns things into a purplish-red color! It's a heroic adventure game for you to enjoy, with witty dialogues and unforgettable comic characters and - a lot of hilarious game over screens. So? What are you waiting for? Download it already!"

Are there any suggestions? Do you know a game that deserves being picked?

If yes, please write a short teaser and post it here!

Toffee Trouble in Creamville - a sweet little MAGs game with some exceptional graphics, characters and puzzles. It's a travesty that you can't pick your own game when it's such a delightful little number.

Hehehe you beat me in here...

Out Of Gas: A wonderfully calming and yet upbeat little adventure that begins when your car runs out of gas on the way home. Navigate a charming and bustling little city, that is however not without its own seamy underbelly, in your quest to simply return home. This is a game that should keep a smile on your face with its cheery tone, while at the same time presenting interesting puzzles, some eccentric characters, and a memorable playing experience.

(It was a tough choice between Creamville and Out Of Gas, but I figured Creamville is already getting quite a bit of outside recognition, while Out Of Gas deserves more...And we can just pick Creamville next month...(laugh) )

+1 for Toffee Trouble in Creamville.

Being a dunkin' funride throughout, this coming-of-age story shines with tasty characters and graphics so sweet that you'll be left drooling over your screen. The low difficulty and various puzzles make it perfectly suited for young adventurers to get their teeth into.

The AGS awards gave me the opportunity to play games I missed. I'd like to submit Waiting for the loop for the next pick :

Presented in a "choose your own adventure" style, Waiting for the loop features diffrerent outcomes that encourage replayability.
Well-written dialogs supported by spot-on dubbing emphasize the importance of your choices in this striking tale about AI.

Thanks for updating the link!

I checked the link when Creamy suggested the game and I set the pick (I can do that in advance, the page switches automatically) but I didn't re-check it later.

Link: http://gamejolt.com/games/archeos/257293

Description:
In Archeos, a short and beautifull adventure game
made for #AdvJam2017, help archaeology professor
Pangloss and his student Seamus in their exploratory
quest on the now ancient, ruined and abandoned planet
Earth. This game is a mix of a cool story with
beautiful graphics, supplemented with nice music.
Besides that, the player might also learn a thing or
two history wise during this investigative quest.

July has been rich in good games. For August pick, I suggest Terror of the Vampire! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2170/)

Embark alongside Dr Ego Goodmind on his journey through vaguely Eastern Europe to teach superstitious locals the benefits of modern psychiatry.
With art worthy of the Great Mouse Detective and a story Gelliant Gutfright would bite for, this game is the perfect remedy to your pathological need for proactive inactivity.

Good idea. I have a proposition for a description:

When a game called "hang on" features a lonely mountain cabin on its title screen, you know that it won't talk about telephone queues.
Don't worry though, this lighthearted adventure won't involve any woman falling to her death because of a defective harness.

Some good games that I've played recently :

- On leaving the building.
- The Elevator.
- The Execution of Anne Boleyn .
- 10 Ways from Sunday.

Since nobody wrote, I propose On Leaving The Building (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2193/) :

Have you ever wondered what the King was up to in his final years? Probably not since we'd rather remember him as the legendary crooner he once was. In stark contrast, BRANE gives us control of an overweight drug-addicted Elvis about to... about to what exactly?

It's called "Community Pick" because anyone from the AGS community can pick a game and write a teaser. There doesn't have to be a community vote on this. That's also why the picker's name is shown together with the pick ;)

It would be great if there could be some more reviews of the Chrysalis ( :) link in sig; my first ever game; and it was released in November, so (laugh) )...

I played a few games this month. The one i played to the end was http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=55366.0 "Joe's miserable life"

Not sure if the rules allow it, given it was released on October, not November, but anyway:

(the others just were larger games, so even though i spent more time on them, i didn't finish them...)

Re Joe's miserable life, then:

"Joe is not happy; and has reason to not be so. You could say his life lacks sauce. In reality, though, he has a few friends, including a spider and a speaking doll. He is resolved to find a way to help his friends, utilizing powers given to him by loved ones departed and thoroughly internalized".

I've never suggested a game for a pick of the month before, so I have no idea how the process goes. I just saw that no one was suggesting anything, and wanted to help.
Feel free to ignore it, but how's this for a blurb:

Being reminded of it again with Hobbes' return, I'd like to suggest Buccaneer (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/258/)

A fun piratey adventure game that's NOT a rip-off of Monkey Island, but still shows love for the genre and theme, built on rogueish music, pretty pixel art and an interesting story that hints at more. While it is a bit short, you're unlikely to leave it disappointed!

@Danvzare Having played the game should be a prerequisite to suggesting it.

That sounds fair. Although I did get a pretty decent distance in the game.

The only other game that comes to mind for PotM is "Maniac Mansion Mania - Episode 53 - The Klaus strikes back"
My blurb for that would be "Don't let the two cups fool you, this is an underrated classic. A hilarious game where you must get revenge, but karma keeps getting in your way."
I have completed that game... twice in fact. :-D

I guess I should finally get around to completing Bog's game now. (laugh)

Not sure if I can suggest this (given it is not free, and from 2016; and another poster already suggested a game, from 2004- not sure if it was accepted or not?), but since no one else is posting anything, and given I recently rewatched the playthrough, here goes:

Kathy Rain

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=53514.0

My review:
"Kathy Rain can be regarded as a modern version of the first Gabriel Knight; in style the gfx and feel is similar, while the actual plot includes some more ambiguous elements. The protagonist, Kathy, is to a degree dependent on her friend, much like Gabriel was to his female employee and romantic interest, and both of those secondary characters find themselves in danger along with the leads.
The progression of the story comes at a natural pace, and there are a couple of intricate puzzles. There is both humour and some sense of dread; although probably the overall mood is less sinister than in GB or similar horror.
A very stylish and professional-looking game."

The Clockwork Labyrinth: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2266/

Enjoy puzzle solving? Being baffled by "ancient" mysteries? Taking notes? Roaming aimless thru a maze to find all secrets and finally save the woman trapped in the maze? Then you must not miss this 1st person Adventure game with beautifully detailed rendered scenes.

PS- this good enough? :) )

Okay I'll choose one then - it's a bit of a blast from the past.

Zog Moonbuckle: The Mysterious Planet.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1778/

What this game lacks in polish it more than makes up for in charm.  It's a sci-fi adventure with a fair dollop of humour, not too much to tax your little grey cells but the puzzles are all logical and held together by a nice storyline.  All in all this is an enjoyable romp that will take you about an hour to complete, and will definitely leave you with a smile on your face.

That hurts!

The Shaft (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2317/)
Isolated from your unit after a landing mishap, you must jerry-rig your way to find out what lies at the bottom of the shaft.

Modern adventure games often neglect inventory puzzles. Not Kastchey's winning entry for last July MAGS competition. Plus, it's all wrapped up in glorious pixel art. Time to party like it's 1989!

Hi Everyone!

I'd like to nominate "Yago the Coquerrestrial" for "pick of the month.

Yago is a reporter from the planet Coque, and is commissioned to renew a documentary about Earth that the Coquelians made 50,000 years ago. The human race has evolved a lot, and Yago has the onerous duty to revise the doco. Solo. He loses nearly everything in a collision with a satellite, so he not only has to make the doco, he needs to fix his ship as well.
He is goal-oriented, which is one of those irregular verbs - I am goal-oriented, you are plain selfish, he is a complete a55hole! He does many nasty things, but he has to.
The animations are first class and the plot is sublime. The humour is from chuckle to absolute belly-laugh-out-loud. Yago is an enigma; a lovable character that you can hate as well. This, for me, was one of the best games of 2018. Try it! There are many helpful hints on the "hints and tips" thread, I put some of them there.
Don't miss out - it's a hard game but worth the effort!

Title: Re: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: Wiggy on Fri 01/02/2019 09:24:40
Yes, that's it . It is an installer, not a zip file. Each to his own I guess. Personally I'd choose the .zip format, but I can assure you there is nothing nasty in the installer.

Up to him to decide what to upload. But some people don't download exe. No matter if there's nothing wrong with it. I don't like installers, so I just don't download if it's not a zip/rar/7z/etc...

How about...

Don't Look! by Tamanegi
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1394/

A somewhat disturbing journey into the mind of a troubled 8 year old struggling to control her anxiety.

The strong focus on storytelling takes it toll on the puzzles, the verb coin is a bit awkward and there is no sound or music, but if you can appreciate a game for its backstory, cool NPC and an occasional jump scare, you will definitely enjoy this dark fantasy tale.

Can you use the author's description?

"A sharp clap of thunder jolts you awake.

You find yourself cold and alone in a dark forest clearing.

You have no memory of who you are or what you're doing here.

You just know that you need to make it to the distant light that you recognise as home.

But the forest is not going to make it easy...

And you might just find that there's more to this strange pilgrimage than meets the eye..."

I thought about nominating Femspray (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1154/), which while it doesn't have a queer protagonist (except for in one bit), it was a fun, lighthearted but non-derogatory take on the subject. But then I realised I had written it up for pick of the month before already :D. The author made a newer game with similar themes and subject matter, but I haven't played that one, so I can't really nominate it.

Instead, I'll go for a game that has been nominated before, over 10 years ago, and deserves way more love :D : The Winter Rose (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/643/)
I remember there was a word limit for how long the blurb had to be, but I can't find/remember it now, so here is something I hope is long enough:

I believe this 14 year old gem is our resident BaRoN's first game, so you might feel it has a few rough edges, but it is well worth playing. It has great writing, pretty artwork, all building up to create the cold wintery atmosphere that leads you to a genuine sense of going on an adventure in this adventure game- like the Sierra games of old, but without the frustrating and insane puzzles.

If no one else is looking to provide a pick with a full description, I can offer:

Absin by Fransis
Database link: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2263/
Synopsis: Join a bitter, cynical, down-on-her-luck detective on an unexpected and very much unwanted journey into her past.
Whilst more picky players may find the visuals lacking, the interesting non-linear structure of this investigative noir game and a strong focus on narration should easily make up for it.

It hasn't been a PotM yet and it's a pretty cool game. Fairly recently released, too!
Also, - spoiler alert, best play the game through to the end before you unhide -
Spoiler
it has a Q protagonist, per Blondbraid's wish :)

I am sad that a game would be dismissed due to being old. Old games need love too! More so than new games!

(my disappointment is very trivial, and I'm half joking, don't make much of it  := ).

Excellent pick, Kastchey! I just finished playing and I got ending
Spoiler
A - Obviously I guessed it right. It was quite difficult because there were only clues, no real proof. But no other person was that suspicious so I just guessed  :)
[close]

Too bad there is no save option, it actually took me longer that 1 hour to play, there are a lot of rooms to explore.

@Babar: The games were dismissed because they were already PotM before. And I think newer games need more love than old games.
Title: Re: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: Kastchey on Mon 17/06/2019 23:35:01
Fully agree, the lack of save makes the game considerably less player friendly and it does take more than an hour to complete. Still worth it, though!
Spoiler
I think I got the same ending the first time round, as I also figured the real culprit was the most logical choice. Side note, if I remember correctly the debug mode has been left on so whoever doesn't feel like replaying or have the patience because of the lack of save system, there's always the cheap option for a bit of extra lore...
[close]
And as for the game choice in general, it's always interesting when someone uncovers an old gem. But there's also an unquestionable perk to choosing games released in a given year - more chance for a wider variety of nominees for AGS Awards. I thought of suggesting a game added in 2019 purely for that reason, but couldn't resist picking Absin...

Metaphobia by Digital Mosaic Games
Database link: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2352/
Synopsis: The murder of his father, a prominent politician, always seemed a bit suspicious to the protagonist. According to the authorities it was a random burglary, but maybe some enemies wanted to silence him and used a hit-man. How deep is the rabbit-hole? You can find out in this very elegant and professionally made new horror adventure.

Hey, thank you! Your description of my game is really flattering! I am not really active here anymore (changed over to Ren'Py), but I still have fond memories of that game and am very happy that after more than 8 years, people still remember it, and play it! I just found out about it being Pick of the Month May when I googled for the old download link because someone asked me for old games I made.

There's a lot of things I would have done differently looking at it now, but I still am proud to have finished a game at all in one month - and that the theme I got to choose for the next round of the monthly challenge, "Submerged", led to three really nice games. The reason why there's no sound at all is that I have no idea how to make music and I wanted to make the game 100% myself, so no stock sfx either.

I am so glad to see that Tales of Jayvin is 'Pick of the Month', thanks to
Lorenzo's recommendation.

The sheer amount of work that went into this game, over a four year period,
is staggering.

Thousands of lines of programming were implemented by Vincent, while
RetroJay was responsible for drawing each, and every, graphic.

Hunched over their keyboard and mouse, for hours at a time, they created a game
truly worthy of this honour.

It covers most genre of games, is hugely entertaining, and has it all- in buckets! :-D

Clotilde Soffritti in: Never Buy a Used Spaceship (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2377/)

All space travellers will tell you: many merchants are not too fussy about the security of their customers. Poor Clotilde should have read the title of her first adventure!

I've enjoyed What's in the safe (https://spacequesthistorian.com/2016/02/22/whats-in-the-safe-talkie-version-out-now/) by the Space Quest Historian and the late Amayirot Akago a while ago. I wanted to submit it for game pick. However, it's not in the AGS database currently.

Although I didn't work on the game, could I create an entry for it?

Would it be possible to contact Space Quest Historian somehow and ask for creating an entry?

Since it's already late in the month, I propose another game in the meantime:

Broken Windows - Chapter 1 (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2401/)

"There's no shortage of fan-games oozing with love of the golden classics on AGS.
Yet, they are not fairly distributed and some popular series get overlooked over time, such as Sierra's Police Quest.
Fortunately, you can count on GOC Games to recapture what made it so special.

Proposition for April:

GNRBLEX (Steam Version) (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2362)
It says "This is a commercial game" but it's free.

Here's the teaser:

- What's the cute animal behind the glass?
- It's a GNRBLEX, also known as a 'mind maggot'.
- Why the nickname?
- You don't want to know.

It seems that this is a Steam only version. A Pick of the month should not require the player to login or register somewhere.

New month, new proposition:

Billy Masters Was Right (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2461-billy-masters-was-right/)

Poor Billy's been grounded and his credibility has reached an all-time low.
Not the best time to stick his nose in the neighbor's affairs - or is it?

A game I enjoyed is Barn Runner: Pucker Factor.
Here's my (rather poor) description for it:

The Barn Runner series is back! In this new chapter Noriko has to face an ember storm to save MAGS (Modular Auto-charging Gauss System) -- but more importantly: find love!

Help her navigate a maze of dialogue choices, arcade games, an actual maze, hidden objects sections, funny banter, and much more!

(Beware: there's some somewhat "spicy" content in the game, in case this kind of things bothers you)

My suggestion for October (even if it's not appropriately spooky):

Bartolomeo, misled by circumstances, learns that appearances can be deceptive.
Pleasantly simple art, nice jokes, and a well-realized little world, all made in the span of two weeks. I'd write more, but the title ate most of my character limit.
:=

Limey Lizard, of course!

Yes, it's never too late to give some recognition to an overlooked game. That's something that I like in the Pick.  Only free games are eligible though (sorry Zniw).

After seeing the award nominations, I feel I have to suggest an overlooked title for one of the upcoming months.

Suggestion:

Money Mansion (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2434-money-mansion/)

So you liked Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle? Want to play more with the heroes from those games? Sorry, this one is about the bad guys! In a wonderful mash-up of Disney's Uncle Scrooge and MM, try to get ahold of a million bucks to keep the Mansion. You play as Dr. Fred, Edna and Ed, who each have their own weaknesses and (lack of) abilities. Enjoy bizarre humour and solve challenging puzzles in your quest to take that money! Flirt with a statue! Beat the security system! Watch TV! Oh, just play the game, won’t you?

I want to suggest Content, for game of the month: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=58987.0

In Content you return to the Bug-infested universe (this is the second game in a series) and unwillingly get involved so as to save your cat. A lot of creative elements and nice animations, make this a great addition to the series. Be sure to check the author's first game too.

I don't think Minifeg: The Search (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1834/) have been a pick of the month. It's a small to medium sized gem from 2014, where it didn't win its MAGS and may be overlooked because of it.

This was made in a month with animated Lego graphics and features time travel and all sorts of trouble to get back to the present day. I'd probably play it for the Lego alone, but there's also humour, devious puzzles that seem straightforward afterwards and a messed-up timeline spanning from prehistoric to the future, visiting seven (I think) time eras.

Title: Re: Community "pick of the month"
Post by: heltenjon on Sat 20/11/2021 12:53:19
I can make some suggestions, but I’ve picked some times now, so perhaps someone else ought to chime in.

M*A*S*H: The adventure game hits the feeling from the tv show very well and was well received by those who played it. Unfortunately, the spelling of the title may mean that it’s hard to find via search. Also, I proofread for this, so it may be too close to home for me to nominate. But I’d say it’s a pretty good game.
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2515-m-a-s-h-point-n-click-adventure-game/

If this section is mostly about overlooked gems, then If on a Winter’s Night: Four Travelers probably doesn’t fit, as it was met with universal praise. Maybe the best AGS game ever. (Hell, best _game_ ever, if you ask me.)
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2520-if-on-a-winter-s-night-four-travelers/

If we’re looking for older games, then why not nominate ! by Ben304? It’s a minimalist masterpiece, with all the locations in comic book-like panels on a single screen. Great variety in the puzzles as well makes this a true classic.
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1254--/

One game that really gets me in a good mood, is Slasher’s The Rat Pack Do Cheesy Castle. Short and easy MAGS entry, but all those music cuts about cheese really makes me smile when I think of it.
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2256-the-rat-pack-do-cheesy-castle/

One of my all-time favourites is Elia, Alaria & The Kids Having a Good Time at the Beach (Or at least they try). It’s a short slice-of.life comedy as Elia have to make everyone ready to go. Beautiful Lorenzo art and hilarious Lorenzo humour equals a great playing experience.

I appreciate your concern. I also try not to pick all the games myself.
That's why I've used enthusiastic comments from the game pages lately - with the consent of their author.

Yes  :P

There are only so many ways to ask people to suggest a game.

There you go: "If you are looking for a change from classic pixel-art, you are in a for a treat. Jump into the beautifully hand-drawn, yet crazy, world of Clotilde Soffritti and help her get away from an asteroid where she's been stuck for way too long... Also, a nostalgia kick guaranteed for all comic-book lovers!"

Didn't you mention something about a free animation, Creamy ;)?

Played any good AGS game recently? Write a little blurb about it and have it featured on the main game page.

I enjoyed Beat the Buzzer (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2607-beat-the-buzzer/#comments).

Blurb:

What starts out as a regular quiz show, ends up being something different and stranger!
Made in a week for the Dread XP Found Footage jam, Beat the Buzzer is a fun short game with a horror twist, that should provide 20/30 minutes of entertainment.

Nice game btw. I like how the repetition is incorporated.

For next month, can I suggest "A Room Without You In It"?

Blurb: A short game with a surprising amount of depth. A nicely kept kitchen belies the grief hiding in plain sight.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been a Pick O' The Month yet.

I would like to nominate Where Did All The Humans Go?

A delightful slice of comic-book sci-fi with a nice puzzles, a heavy dose of humour and a side serving of melancholy that will tug at your heart strings. The graphic style fits the game perfectly and the one-click interface is put to very good use. The game hints at being part of something much bigger. Winner of the $106 Adventure Game Challenge and very much worth the time you will spend playing it.

"Alas", cried the abandoned indie gem, "it's been years since someone landed on these shores".

"Will I have to wait the next lockdown before someone points and click me?" it pondered hopelessly scanning the horizon, eager to delight once again.

@Creamy - dude your poetry nearly moved me to tears!  (laugh) But since I chose the last one, I'll let someone else make a suggestion this month.

Any game to suggest for August?

How about Ben Jordan 8? A very satisfying closing act on a long-running AGS franchise. Good graphics, nice backgrounds, engaging puzzles, and solid writing. Overall a very enjoyable game, if a bit short compared to some of the other games in the series. Before Grundislav became the fabulously wealthy game-making powerhouse he is today (if the truth about the rewards of indie gaming is otherwise, i don't want to know it!), take a look at his roots.

FYI, I wanted to nominate Seed by Limpingfish (from OROW, many years ago), but it doesn't seem to have a games page. Then I wanted to nominate RoN: Purity of the Surf, but who knows if it would even run on modern systems. (http://www.barnrunner.com/pics/misc/Roger_RollEyes.gif)

Doesn't ring a bell. I can't seem to find it anywhere on internet.

I think it works. I played it a couple of years ago after hearing about it in this thread (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/reality-on-the-norm/redesigning-reality-on-the-norm-for-pixeling-practice/).

Could I put in an early suggestion for next month? Pretty sure it's never been chosen before. Obviously partly because of the recent news that Les is no longer with us, but not purely chosen as a tribute out of sentimentality, I think there's much to commend this game. (Hope the fact that I helped him make it doesn't disqualify me from suggesting it?)

DSM: Are we alone? by Slasher
https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1738-dsm-are-we-alone-/

Out of the many games Slasher made, this is one of the biggest and most ambitious. Whilst not everything about it works, there is much that does - lots of different locations and environments to explore, a large number of puzzles, some intrigue, some laughs, and all done in that style we knew so well from our AGS friend who is sadly no longer with us. A fitting reminder of what he managed to accomplish despite serious health difficulties. RIP Slasher.

I suggest Contact (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2580-contact/) by UKZ530.

Those familiar with the author know what to expect. Hand-drawn graphics with a nightmarish atmosphere, with action sequences showing monsters mauling our hero to bits.

Hi guys,

QuoteHey folks, just a reminder that a new game should have been chosen, maybe just leave for next month now?
Err...yeah I was busy with real life and my MAGS game and I forgot to change the pick. When I realized it a couple of days ago I thought it was a bit late :-[  But October MAGS theme is linked to Slasher so let's pretend this was intentional  :P

@heltenjon do you want me to set Contact for this month or the next?

Someone in my left ear suggests it's a good choice for Halloween.
Ok, change made then.

I thought we already picked that one. Turns out it was Content (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2528-content/) by the same author. What will his next game be? Contempt? Contrario?
