I love finding special "covers" of songs played in a completely different genre than the original, especially when the songs are actually enjoyable now because of it.
For example jazz versions of Studio Ghibli themes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEZzwq_rlQU
Or jazz fusion versions of songs and artist I don't really care for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko0kdCf0zTE
Or electro swing versions of songs that just sounds so much better this way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDlC9m1FDo4
Anyone else enjoy finding gems like this? :)
My music preferences are very varied (hehe) so I liked this one for some reason:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRVhooUQwrM
I think the genre is "folk punk" or something like that. Of the kind of things made purely for fun, I guess :D.
Love this kind of stuff. Do you know bluegrass Thunderstruck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Ao-iNPPUc)?
I've seen both of these before, both nice :D hehe

I found another, more "conventional" version, made by same group:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cnm0tdkJEU&list=PL7A4D9C100657150E
Then I looked for original song, because I never heard it before, and really, I cannot listen to it :).
Best for me is still:
"I Did It My Way." covered by The Sex Pistols.
Especially since it's also the closing credits music for one of my all-time favorite movies... ;)
I just love this..
Sibelius - Finlandia... prog-fusion version by Anssi Tikanmäki:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdU5eaNlt8Y
Pennywise's version of Stand By Me is wonderful.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ1ajf4cDlA
Also (though maybe not super genre-busting) I love Korn's take on Another Brick in the Wall.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xzkiJJ_NkD0
Maybe not along the same lines as above, but I've always liked the Headstones cover of Traveling Wilburys' 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fBd32vg3As (pretty cool fan-music-video made from movie scenes)
Although that Thunderstruck cover may have been one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
This playlist has some great ones on it:

If I had to pick one, it'd be SOS by the Mad Caddies:

OMG!!! That was awesome!!!
I liked their cover of "She Shook Me All Night Long" even more...
Their cover of Nothing Else Matters reminded me of this:
https://youtu.be/7jz1Kw_a4E4
This is a medley, not a single song. Still quite good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BGFAP6JJrk
Was hoping it would be that! So good.
Nice thread. I like the lounge covers, like the Cafe Del Mar, there are a lot of different variations of the famous songs. My favourites are the Cafe Del Mar & Bob Marley â€" Sun Is Shining (Lounge) and Cafe Del Mar ft. Cecile Bredie â€" The Autumn Leaves
And I think that from place to place they are even better than the original due to the specific musical instruments like piano, guitar, etc. Love lounge music especially in restaurants etc..
Remember how I`ve spend the evening in Montenegro on the shore of the sea.. there was a nice beach where there was not a soul, so we sit there with friends and near at the second stair there was a very-very expensive restaurant with live lounge music. And I like it so much those day, the vocalist was great..Very nice woman...=)
Moran Magal's made an album with piano covers of metal songs. <3

It's not really a completely different genre, but the Radiohead medley reminded me of one of my favorites recently: Lianne La Havas' cover of "Weird Fishes" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_sJVazqw58)
Better examples, but only relevant to Norwegian-speakers or afficionados, are "Her kommer vinter'n" (originally by Jokke & Valentinerne) sung by Ingrid Olava (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uovQlEOYB30), and Halvdan Sivertsen's Norwegian version of Bertine Zetlitz' "Twisted Little Star" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCpsLnZufFk).
Easy Star All-Stars do fantastic reggae covers of entire albums. My particular favorite is their cover of Let Down (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXBamm5XqO8) by Radiohead (featuring Toots & the Maytals).

Holy shit! That is one of the most awesome things I have ever heard!
I so want to rip that and use it in a game! It's so unrecognizable a cover you could probably get away with it too...
I wonder how many other Alvin And The Chipmunks songs sound this good when slowed down?!
Great covers! I may add:
Seether - Careless Whisper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7imqO-OBVk
and
London Grammar - Wicked Game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slbfJtewzvE
Vintage cover of 'Creep' from Radiohead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3lF2qEA2cw
I think this is beautiful. ^^
okay, then let me dig up some too :)
another wicked game cover by Les Reines Prochaines

best cover of this dolly parton song. imho best version ever, better than the lame original.
there once was a very very cool cover of 7 nation army by ben l'ounce soul on youtube but all versions by him found there now are lame. maybe it's my german youtube or he had to remove it because of pure awesomeness, idk...
Say, why is covers in scare quotes, anyway?
Great collection selmiak :)
Since Dolly Parton is mentioned, let's not forget this cover:

I'm glad someone appreciates true art! :D
The answer: Basically none of them. There are a bunch of other chipmunks songs by that artist on Soundcloud and none of them are as goth or as intentionally good.
I love the My Humps cover, CaesarCub. She's so above that and yet does it so well.
Oh, this thread reminded me of a series of covers recorded from a radio programme hosted by an Australian TV/radio personality, Andrew Denton. Some of them include:
Pretty Vacant by the Delltones (originally by the Sex Pistols) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxLJ0nWB7Ho)
I Write the Songs by Diesel (originally by Barry Manilow) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFEEv3eVCeE) -- Mark Lizotte (Diesel) famously did not write his biggest hit :D
S.O.S. by Tonic (originally by ABBA) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrnjAt4mK58)
Down Under by the Russian Red Army Choir (originally by Men at Work) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OtbV6_KryY)
There are plenty more. Some of the best don't exist on YouTube anymore (country/western version of Freak by Silverchair).
There's also a cover of I Touch Myself by Rolf Harris which... I er... won't link to. *shudder*
Complete list is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Denton%27s_Musical_Challenge
Also, there are some NIN covers/mashups that were pretty popular a few years ago. One was Hurt by Johnny Cash, arguably the best version of the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc)
And Call Me a Hole by PomDeter. I can't tell you what genre this is. You'll just have to listen to it.

I also really like Type O Negative's version of Day Tripper:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1pcjpJROkA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1pcjpJROkA)
Supergrass did some great covers under the name Hot Rats. I particularly liked their rendition of Up The Junction
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP2i_I8VphE
The original by Squeeze is great as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGlvQTtrRTs
System Of A Down - Toxicity - piano cover

Balanescu Quartet - The Model

Growing up in a home with one older sister whom forced Madonna's 80s and 90s music into our DNA (not a bad thing at all := )
Jay Smith - Like a prayer

That's a mashup, an interesting genre in itself.
I'll add this one to the thread:
Rexway - Hooker With a Penis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_sKGdfKLQc) (Cover of this song by Tool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoWMmZEoT84)).

Not completely different - but I prefer Kurt Vile's version of Downbound Train to Springsteen's original.
Bruce - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc_mv46NwT4
Kurt - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7xMjDKgy8g
Ah Haggis, how awesome to see Kurt Vile in here. Loving all the Radiohead cover too, specially the Weird Fishes one.
This seems like an appropriate time to post this jolly seasonal tune:

I could go on and on!

He's a recent find for me - really enjoying his music. Had a bit of a music binge over the past year and bookmarked loads of new artists to listen to. Jason Isbell though I've been a fan of for a long time, since his DBT days... and he's my next entry with another Boss cover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AEqTSwtmms
Also:
Mark Lanegan - You Only Live Twice - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQvGIlApbTo
Chris Cornell - I Will Always Love You (acoustic) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2-jogS5u0I - (tbf the Cornell does like a cover version, some efforts better than others - but this one gets my vote given he performed it the day WH died in tribute (who also covered it) - what a voice)
Johnny Cash - Rusty Cage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtbuUlSGXzc (and of course his cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails)
Not an entirely different genre..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XaS93WMRQQ
Orbital - Doctor?
