Topic: Past And Future Collide
This month's guidelines were set by DBoyWheeler

Description and Rules:
Basically, mix a past time period with the future in some way.

For example, something that's like Medieval Europe or pre-Islamic Arabia (i.e. Arabian Nights), or some other past time, but with sci-fi stuff (teleporters, phasers, etc.)  Heck, even the Stargate movie is an example of this (mixing ancient Egypt with futuristic high-tech).

Or maybe the location was futuristic, but a big war or other mega-disaster (natural, man-made, or even supernatural) made them try to start over, salvaging whatever high-tech is possible, and resembles something from a past era as well.  (The best example I could think of is the anime "Monster Rancher".  What is it?  Go forth and look it up on Wikipedia, my friend.)

Just try to mix some past historical setting (even if it's a fantasy-style setting of the medieval or whatever era) with the sci-fi future in some creative way.

Ending: September 30th

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?board=10.0) are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive (http://www.mags-competition.info/?page=games). For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website. (http://www.mags-competition.info/)

No guarantees or promises, but I wanted to give this a shot. Got myself a surface pro 4 for incredibly cheap and realized that my horrendous art skill is only considered very bad with a surface pen. So I have a new confidence for this. Question on the theme: how far do we have to go into the past or future? Can the past be let's say the 70's or 80's or even the 1800's or does it literally have to be like 500+ years?

It's however you interpret the theme. Nobody around here is strict about how you do so.

MAGS is all about getting more and more games out there for the community to play, and for the growth of the creator as a game dev.

Just let us play your game if possible please!

Well, it can be as far back (like ancient Egypt) or as recent (like the 1970's).  Just some sort of past time period.  Heck, it can even be a fantasy time period (like Arabian Nights or usual medieval fairy tale).  Just something that you know it's a past time period, and mixing it with something futuristic (like Star Trek style teleporters or phasers) would make it weird yet cool.  (It'd even be more interesting if, for example, it were a Wild West setting and the sci-fi phasers looked like sci-fi versions of six-shooters!)

Awesome MAGS topic, DBoyWheeler!
Too bad I won't find time to participate. I am still polishing the MAGS entry I made a year ago...
And told myself, not to get into a new project before this one is finished.

But I am pretty excited to see your interpretations!

Post by: Blondbraid on Fri 01/09/2017 21:57:50
It sounds like a fun theme, I'm already toying with an idea of making an entry:

Basically, a mercenary/grave robber type character travels to a war-torn country in order to use the chaos to steal and plunder it's riches,
but accidentally activates an artifact that has the power to manipulate past events, and ends up altering key moments in the history of the region.
(I'm thinking of something similar to the memory remix puzzles (https://youtu.be/jbANyg8Z16o?t=180) in Remember Me.)
I've thought about using this idea to explore why some countries are laden with political and religious instability and corruption,
and how factors like colonialism and tension between different ethnic and religious groups as well as a wide class divide contributes.
However, while I want to tackle serious themes, I intend to use a fictional world with cyberpunk/steampunk theme for the setting.

However, me and Creamy are still polishing our last MAGS entry, but it would be fun to work on a new project again in case anyone finds my idea interesting.

Present meets with the Past

Comic capers as a NASA bag from the present emerges from a wormhole and lands right at Fred Flintrocks' feet in Stoneage time....

"There is no one around."
"I wonder what is inside the bag?"
"Mmm. Very strange."
"I'v never seen these things before."
"I wonder what they are?"

Such a shame really, because I think maybe your MAGS entries are potentially better than the ones you are toiling over and polishing into infinity...

"Out Of Gas" is amongst my favorite AGS games of all time, as is the lego-themed time travel one I forget the name of right now...

You might be a bit like me where you can't release anything unless it is "perfect" and you already lost most of your interest in it and it became a chore instead of a pleasure to go back to and open up AGS to work on it, unless you must release it because of a deadline...

Or maybe I'm just looking more at myself in the mirror...

Nah, deadlines are the key. No deadline, and you can work on it until infinity... (nod)(laugh)

OF:
Spoiler

But the BSG is virtually finished, I just need the last music track... And then a bit of testing to make sure it's working fine.
And the 2nd game if the last MAGS, not Jake... ;) Though I want to learn a new software, so decided I want to use that program to create the BGs for that game. So if I stop being so tired all the time, I can finish that game and just wait for "proper" BGs with the new software. (roll) But I've barely even been on the computer more than 10-20min a day lately. (roll)

Good to hear, Slasher! ;-D

My game now has approximately one and a half puzzles and more character sprites than I've ever drawn in my life (not that it actually looks like it in-game). So it's getting there.

There are lots of theories about why Henry VIII had Anne Boleyn executed, but my game reveals the true story of what happened and is 100% historically accurate, as you can see from the screenshot* below:

I'll warn everyone now, though, the graphics are bad. When I did them at the beginning I thought I'd be able to go back later and make them a bit better, but I don't think I'll have the time. So I apologise to your eyeballs. (laugh)

Hi Riaise,

I'm glad you are getting an entry in this month.

We still have a week to go so get a spurt on, you can do it....

Unless you have a zillion rooms to change you can do it.

I myself find it hard to focus on colours much of the time and the brighter they are the better I see them.

I tend to be ready early so it gives me time to sort any problem areas out...or at least try...

Keep going (nod)

October's contest will open as normal (easier to do from my phone).

I hope there's not too many bugs, I've tested it as thoroughly as I can (I even roped in Slasher to help! (laugh)). And if the final section seems familiar it's because it was ripped off from inspired by another game. (nod)

Congrats to all the entries!

Well, I had a great idea for this early in the month, and didn't get the time to develop it. Maybe next time. I hope to be playing some of the results soon.

I'll just be sneaking in an entry at the last moment...

It's something I have been working on since the contest opened but it grew a lot in the making, and then I got really invested in the game, and then it turned into just a DEMO and not a complete game...

There are a LOT of assets and code behind the scenes for the complete game, but I will just release the DEMO for now in this MAGS:

(Oh, yeah, the game has several walkbehind issues that I ran out of time to solve... Please forgive for now...)

TIME TRIAL

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD (http://www.mediafire.com/file/muq6nkc2vpkhcdk/Time+Trial+DEMO.7z)

You wake up hungry and thirsty in your cave. The thirst is not a huge issue, but the hunger will require that you head out hunting.

Luckily this is just the DEMO and you can defeat any enemy instantly and get a decent meal. (Yeah, sorry, I didn't get the combat system in place in time for the deadline)

So just get your tummy full of what you just easily killed and then head back home for some well deserved res...

SCREEECH!!! OMG WTF just happened?!?!

Ok I played twice and I'm not sure what's going on.

Spoiler
Character starts off drinking and having to eat. 2 screens later climbs a tree and then has one item to eat but nothing to drink for about 15 screens. Eating animals doesn't kill them but you can only eat them once. Eating the animals doesn't seem to affect the hunger meter. Eventually you get to a modern city but can't access it so you turn around. You can then eat the same animals again but there's still no water so the character dies
[close]

I am not sure what part of this is my lack of understanding or due to the demo nature of the game.

due to the demo nature of the game.

^^This for sure (laugh)

Here's what to do so far:
Spoiler

About all you can do so far is go to the desert area and kill a creature, eat it, and then return home to your cave.
When you encounter a creature (run into them) two meters will appear. One is your bite attack and the other is your claw attack. Click on one of the meters before its timer runs out. This should kill the creature (sorry, no combat system yet) and you will eat the meat icon dropped. This should take care of your hunger (water is available in your cave and also sometimes in the desert). Now try returning to your cave. The demo should tell you when it is finished.

Thanks for the explanation. I completed the demo. I don't know if figuring that out is part of the puzzle or if it would be better to provide that kind of instructions with the game?

Hehe.... my "solution" was to put the hint of what to do in the game description above. This was at about 2:00AM last night when my brain was already half asleep.

The "demo" is very clunky and incomplete. It's basically everything that was finished on the game plus some stuff like combat that was not finished but needed a quick and dirty "fix" to make even a "demo" possible.

About 50% of what I got done during the month is still behind the scenes. About half the code is blocked with //, there are dozens and dozens of unused sprites, a couple of half-complete puzzles, and a few unused locations (laugh)

I decided that the game deserved better than to just be rushed for the deadline and just went with as much of the story as I could bring out, which turned out to be not much.

So, yeah, please forgive a very clunky demo and hopefully the full game will better reflect what it is supposed to be.

I just updated the game file after fixing a glaring walkbehind error that was really annoying me.

Now when you...
Spoiler
...put your arm into the hole in the side of the console it actually looks like the arm is going into the hole.

This was the only thing I changed so if you've already played through the whole demo then it's probably not really urgent to redownload and play again, but it would be kind of nice if you did, because it's a pretty vital moment in the game and now it's probably a lot easier to see and understand what is happening.

Now I'm off to play the other games!

Hehe... It was hard to keep the secret myself but I thought it could be an interesting surprise. Pity I couldn't just suddenly release a complete game, which was my plan, but as a great man once said: The tale grew in the telling.

I am devoted to finishing this one though as I think it could be something special, given a more realistic dev timeline for what I hope it will become.

Also, I wanted to mention, I've updated my game to fix a game-breaking bug (thanks Mandle!). So if you've downloaded but haven't played yet, then you might want to re-download, just in case.

Hahaha... the only person I told about my little project was one of my high-school students. I told him "I bet there'll be some comments like: "So we've got 3 entries so far, including Mandle's secret one." for a while."

Thanks for the first! :P

Fred and Barney meet the future by Slasher

Spoiler
After last month's more sombre entry it was nice to get back to classic Slasher territory with this game! You're very good at keeping the characters close to the originals, some of the dialogue sounded like it could have come straight out of the cartoon! The puzzles worked well within the story, and the ending was a surprise! Well done!

Time Trial by Mandle

Spoiler
So, I was thinking that this was a nice idea for a game, with the hunting and searching for water, and that it will be good when the combat has been added etc. Then I went back to the cave and OH WAIT it's clearly not the simple little game I thought it was. (laugh) The whole console sequence was really unexpected and makes the entire game so much more intriguing. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses if you do end up expanding it to a full game. Good job!

Cheers for the comment Riaise!

And yeah, I will be continuing to work on this game. In fact, I am doing so right now.

There is not all that much left to do, because of how much is already done but hidden in the demo, so give me a month or two (says me now, knowing well that fully developed MAGS entries have sometimes taken years until final release)...

We will see...

I hope you enjoyed the
Spoiler

Console sequence... That was a lot of work but I wanted to make sure it appeared in the demo or my game would not meet the criteria of the theme... The voicing, audio work, and editing took quite a few valuable hours on the last day but I feel it was worth it. By that point I was more about getting an actual narrative hook into the demo that implied a deeper story for the full version than providing anything like a playable game.

And from your comments it looks like I might have achieved that goal. So, cheers!

Well, I've played all games and it was a really hard choice to make between the goofy fun of Slasher's entry and the more highbrow entry of Riaise.

But at the end of the day I had to go with:

Spoiler
The goofy fun. My vote goes to Slasher but it was really almost a coin toss. Then, I remembered riding a Triceratops, and that pushed me a bit more in Slasher's favour as this was a childhood dream from a book I read called "The Big Egg", and then I remembered the (intentional probably) joke of mostly unclad Fred and Barney getting into close quarters in the mine cart together and Fred saying something like "Just wiggle back and forth a bit, Barney." to, ahem, get the cart moving, which cracked me up and that pushed me over the line. I'm guessing Riaise's entry will probably win. It's an amazing MAGS game! But this time I must go for the underdino...

I've played all the games of this MAGS now.

Fred and Barney meet the future
It's a fun game in slashers usual quality, with some clever puzzles and chuckle-worthy dialogue.

The Execution of Anne Boleyn
I got stuck on a puzzle early on, but otherwise the graphics and story were good, and I liked the ending.

Time Trial
It's a very minimalist game and it ended abruptly, but I liked the survival mechanics and the fact that you played as a dinosaur, plus the voice acting was great fun.

It was a tough choice, but I ended up voting for

Wow, these were all really good.

Fred and Barney meet the future - This game was hilarious, and I really enjoyed the puzzles! Though the colors sometimes made it hard to make out details.

Time Trial - I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing at first, and whether what I was doing was correct. :) And I was a bit confused at, what I thought was the end....
Spoiler
I got to the hole (?) at the end, but couldn't go any further, so I wasn't sure if I missed something or what. I read some comments, and
someone mentioned going all the way back, so then I realized my mistake, and this time went back. I'm not sure I would have realized that, without reading the comments.
The ending was unexpected, very fun, and I'm interested in what happens next.

The Execution of Anne Boleyn - I thought this was a very well-done MAGS game. The puzzles were fun, without being too hard or easy. I liked the art and sound-effects, and overall look
of the game, controls, etc... And the story was well-thought out and fun.
Spoiler
I particularly enjoyed the final race against the evil robot Henry, with transporting between rooms.

My pick is:

The Execution of Anne Boleyn

Well done and well deserved Riaise! Also great to see Slasher grab quite the slice of votes too!

My entry will be back in full-game form in the future! This is one I'm not going to let slide as there is so much already done behind the scenes. Mostly just needs a decent tying togther, which I ran out of time for this time (time, heh, ironic)
