Title: Indiana Jones side walk
Post by: Monsieur OUXX on 29 Jan 2018, 22:10
This post is about the side walk, not the two other views (any paintover of those views will be ignored)

Known defects:
- shading is a bit dirty
- bad contrast in hat
- walking character one pixel too short in frame where he is standing up
- there is a weird gray pixel under his chin.

There's something very weird happening to his arm at the forward extreme. Just as it's about to swing back, it's as if his bicep flops forward or he develops another joint in his upper arm.

Noted. The shading does that. It's a moving sprite clumsily applied on top of the "real" animated arm. In some frames it's positioned with too little care.

The hat also seems fishy and it's not just the contrast.

The hat "feels" smaller... probably cause the other two there's 2 pixels, then 3 then the center of the hat. While the walking you have 3 in line and then the center (giving the impression that is thinner). Also the hat is leveled on the standing stripes, while on the walking is "falling backward".

Indeed the hat needs a redrawing. With time, I've come to hate that fedora! ;)

this is smooth as hell! :-D
critiques are the right hand does a weird bob-movement when at the front. this is no swing anymore and looks off.
and some pixels on his back (upper half) are too much and make his back look to big and square when the left arm moves to the front.
other than that I have nothing to complain and like it very much!

Can you post the individual frames please?

Here you go : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kax7x54iq248rd3/AADtmkkdVbsVSS7FLrZ-Hzoca?dl=0
EDIT : here you go (these are the frames of version side05, posted below) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xaivifwfb6eqodg/AAChYISYRD-hs1UTlDaY_-gVa?dl=0

IMPORTANT: if you intend on doing a paintover, then let me know asap, so that we don't diverge into two branches of the file. I'll give you access to the .PSD instead.

I just wanted to check on somehting, as it was hard to see while it's animating. Dunno, looks alright mechanics wise, tho his neck looks too thin in the side view (also a bit thin in the front facing 3/4). This makes his hat look too big in comparison. I'd prolly just thicken his neck or push some pixels around till it felt right. Also while the other views are in perspective, the side view has both legs at the same height, which is not consistent with the other views. On frame 5 , the lower part of the arm makes a noticeable jump compared to frame 4, so a bit of smoothing is what I recommend. In the end, you might try to make him lean forward a bit too, but I'm not sure if it will look too much at this size.

For an indie Indy game it's still marvelous graphics, but if you wanna put in that extra effort... well I'd say it's worth it.
