Title: Abandoned AGS projects
Post by: imsomnia212 on Sat 28/07/2018 11:31:16
Well, everyone have some games that for some reason are abandoned or were cancelled.
I thought that it will be interesting see some of that games. So if you want you can show a screenshot of one or more here to let the other people die for play some of that.

Here are some of mine:

Strange Guest (Abandoned for no reason, maybe one day I will continue it)

Bad Lucky Luke(Was for a MAGS but I never finished it)

Thimbleweed Park DOTT Version (Cancelled for copyright issues and other things)

The Unfortunate Day (Cancelled a long long time ago because I never have time to finished it, after that when I had time I abandoned it)

The Neverending Story (Fan Game)(Was for a university project, I only finished a demo but some years after I never found the files, so I only have the game cover)

Cool idea. I started and abandoned a lot of projects back in the day. I don't think I still have any files from them though. Wait, is that from MAGS game from the current MAGS?

I have so many, but it's too heartbreaking to show them. Plus I keep lying to myself that they might get finished one day.

Ooo, fun. Most of mine are MAGs games.
My first is the Day of the Tentacle fan game. I never actually had puzzles for it. But it was going to have monster versions of several characters from the original game plus a few Sam and Max characters (but not Sam and Max themselves).  Bernard was going to use a Chewbacca costume to dress as a werewolf, though...

Pink Tentacle, Bernard wolf, zombies, and vampire twins.

September 2016, Pure Evil. The game was tentatively called Demon Crunch. It was going to be about demons making kids evil through cereal.  It did at least cause me to create Alicia and Gary who will eventually be featured in a game.

The Castlevania adventure game I was working on for the October 2016 MAGs, Genre Shift. I can't find the folder with everything, but I do have some images in my tinypic.

Simon, Captain N version, on a background from Drascula.

The Count, Hopper, and Mummy.

And of course there's the unfinished MAGS games from this year...

Too many! That's why I started The Trove to make use of the unused artwork at least.

Not all of my AGS projects were point and click adventures:
A tile based RPG, I had a guy walking around with the keyboard just like the overworld in the old Pokémon games, path finding as well.
A Plants vs Zombies rip-off.
Flappy Adeel.

Many reasons I don't complete them: Lack of time, loss of interest, leave it too long and don't remember what I was doing so get stuck, and my own limitations in my ability to make pixel art.
I've abandoned so many different kinds of projects in various engines, but I tend to learn something each time.

I've got a good feeling I'll complete my current AGS project, I've not felt this motivated for a long while.

Quite often i will begin making a game and flash wallop a better idea comes to mind so i leave the present game on the back burner until a later date.. I have quite a few just waiting to be reignited (laugh)

I've got several of them. For instance, I tried making The Incredible Machine in AGS once, but didn't get very far...

And then there's this old isometric test to make a Cadaver-style adventure game.

Oh boy... these are the two that pain me the most:

Troll Song

Basically my co-devs both left to work on their own projects (which was fair enough of course) - and never came back.  The availability of the original source files for the approximately 40% of the game that was done is uncertain - I certainly don't have access to them and attempts to get them have failed.  Eventually I lost heart - I did try again to restart making the game from scratch (and AnasAbdin very kindly drew me a wonderful new troll sprite) but sadly my heart's just not in it any more, this game has already caused me a huge amount of lost time and heartache, everything was coming together nicely and it just stopped dead.

At least we got the complete Verse One (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1880/) out.  It's a shame though as I think we could have made this into something quite special, and a few people were looking forward to it.  Also my kids and sister have pestered me about getting it finished! :-D

The other game that really pains me is not my own game, but Daniel Thomas' creation - The Journey of Iesir.  I was the Writer / Designer for this game and we had a good team, but for various reasons team members had to leave, then we tried and failed to get funding as we just weren't getting things done quickly enough in our spare time... and eventually we had to call it a day.  I still believe that had we been able to get funding and work on the game full-time, this would have become one of the very best AGS-made games ever (assuming we had stuck with AGS for the complete game).  Anyway, at least you can play the DEMO (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2091/), which offers you quite a decent amount of gaming and lets you see what an amazing game this would have been aesthetically with Dan's awesome graphics and Eric's brilliant music score.

I did also many moons ago have a RON game I was working on called "The Life of Death", in which Death was for some unknown reason becoming mortal.  Sadly the HDD I had everything stored on went kaput and... well, this one will definitely never see the light of day.

Ah, so many cancelled games... but as for AGS projects. None of mine have been cancelled, just put on hold.
I'm even still planning to release the very first AGS game I ever started making... just with a different story, graphics, interface, puzzles, ect. It would probably be better described as a reboot, with the original concept being nothing more than a reference that only I would understand. It's coming along quite nicely actually.

And then there's all the others, which still need updating, changing, refining, and finishing. But none the less, none of my AGS games were cancelled. Unless you count the ones I worked on for literally one day. In which case there's countless. (laugh)

So yeah, my AGS games don't get cancelled, they evolve and get reworked into other games... forever. (laugh)

I really like the sprites of this game, it's sad that you never continue it.

Retro Wolf: Don't lose your faith, take your time and continue when you are more inspired

Slasher: Don't let them waiting too much, they need to be alive hahaha

Radiant: The second one is interesting, maybe you will can continue it some day

CaptainD: It's very sad to hear what happened with your Troll Song game, I never played it but I saw some screenshots and it's look amazing, maybe one day in the future you will have enough inspiration and desire to remake it.
And Iesir, that's the most hurt new that I read in my whole life, when I saw that it will never be finished I started to cry hahaha I hope some day maybe they want to finished.

Haggis: The screenshot remind me a lot the monkey island games

Danvzare: That's what I'm doing right now, I'm making a game from other abandoned games that I never finished

Thanks. The problem is that I didn't know where to go with the game past the initial premise.
Maybe I'll attempt another game with a vaguely LucasArts style for a future MAGS game.

Man, I really dig that idea! What sort of storyline did you have in mind?

A few years ago, I worked with an amateur game dev team on a game called "Slimy Jackpot". The premises were the following:

QuoteMeet Marty Martinson, a lowlife employee of Croco's Diner. He is an avid fan of noir and horror stories, spending most of his modest income on the newest issues of "Weird Tales" and other pulps. One midnight party completely changes his life: having drunk some mysterious liquid, he's thrown him into an adventure of his life, with mafia, occultism, vampires, a mysterious red-headed lady, a demonic clown, etc. Is Marty just dreaming, having fallen asleep on a park bench? Or perhaps the drink was hallucinogenic, and he's now delusional? Or maybe (just maybe) there really is something bigger behind this all?

and

QuoteThis game tells the story of Marty Martinson, an ordinary diner employee from the city of New Misterio. One evening he receives an invitation to a party hosted by the enigmatic Louis DuMongue. Once there, he drinks some strange (probably hallucinogenic) booze called “Emknird” (“Drink me” in reverse), which makes him believe that he is a secret agent on some kind of a mission. Guided by a (probably imaginary) cartoon creature called Whiskey, he goes on a weird trip (in both senses of the word) through the dark underworld of New Misterio.

It was a real acid trip; now I understand we didn't finish it because it was too ambitious and incoherent. Basically, it was a wild mish-mash of LucasArts classics, surreal noir in the vein of David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" and Cronenberg's "Naked Lunch", psychological thriller, King's Quest/Torin's Passage-style fairytale, and much much more. It had drug visions, blends of different genres, and dreams within dreams within dreams; at a certain point, it was conceived as something along the lines of "Toonstruck meets Sanitarium", but basically we couldn't decide where the whole thing was going (I like to think of it as "on indefinite hiatus" rather than "abandoned" though; I hope that someday it will see the light of the day, maybe in a shorter and more modest form).

Hoo boy, I actually did a whole lot of small demos and code snippets, mostly to know the engine better (I've been lurking around the forum since December 2009, after finishing such classics as Pleurghburg or The Shviah and deciding to give AGS a go by myself. 2009's Christmas was mostly me doing stuff in AGS and reading the beginner's questions section like there's no tomorrow.)

One project actually somehow survived, and was even put on YT. I did everything by myself (code, backgrounds, animations, VO), minus the music/SE, in around 2 months time.
You can actually go as far as saying it directly evolved into Zniw Adventure (me and Twarda started working on ZA not even a full year later), as several code snippets and entire scripts were lifted from that. Unfortunately, it's in Polish only, I never did a proper translation.

Gotta love that Rayman Origins music, completely amateurish voice overs and barely any gameplay.

I didn't really have a storyline. That's part of why it was unfinished.
About all I had worked out is that Bernard could talk to Green Tentacle without the costume and that Hoagie could walk to Snuckey's and comment on how the employee looks familiar.
It's possible that I might somewhat revive the project using original characters and locations.
Shame about Slimy Jackpot. It sounds and looks like it had promise.

This is a project I spent the best part of a year developing. I think the problem was I was so busy concentrating on atmosphere that I didn't really have a story planned out to back it up so after about 35% of the way through the game I didn't know where I was going with it.

I still wonder whether I should compile it and add it to the AGS database anyway under the category 'demo'.

About 10 years ago, me and Mats Berglinn were working together on a DOTT fansequel called A Tentacle Hero: Mats was to do the graphic side, and plot and puzzles were our collective work. Instead of Chron-O-Johns, it was to involve teleporters which look like phone booths; unfortunately I haven't been able to contact Mats since 2008, but I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this, and I really don't want it to go to waste, so... here is the script.

I wrote a walkthrough for the game I'm working on right now, which is still far from being finished. It's way shorter than Cyrus' game though and I only wrote down the necessary actions. Nevertheless, it really helps to get things right, avoid logical mistakes and think about certain situations, plot elements, dialogs..

I looked through my older files and found some more stuff Mats Berglinn sent to me on his fangame A Tentacle Hero, put it together in Internet Archive:

Also, he sent me some sketches of his MI fangame Death-controller of Monkey Island, based on his eponymous fanfic; put it up as well:

Also, I put up Duke Stalker, an unfinished 2003 game by Nixxon (IbeX):
