Title: Murder Most Foul (SECOND WANDER PHASE OPEN)
Post by: Mandle on Mon 10/09/2018 15:07:06
I'm creating a roleplaying-based forums game here as an alternative to the werewolves game format which concentrates more on some pretty hardcore psychological warfare and is not to everyone's tastes.

The game will still be competetive in nature, in that a winner (or winners) will be declared at the end.

But it will not involve any elimination of players.

The murdered person is an NPC.

The murderer is a player but cannot murder anyone else during the game. Their aim instead will be to try to cover their tracks as best as possible to confuse the other players and prevent themself being fingered as the guilty party at the end of the game.

Each player will choose or be assigned a character whose role they play. Each character will have a background story and possibly some information and/or skills that other characters do not possess.

The game will have an environment of several rooms, with player actions possible in each room such as "Search for clues" in the case of the good players or "Conceal evidence" in the case of the murderer.

But the possible actions will not be limited to the bare-bones mechanics of the game. In fact, some important steps in discovering more about the crime will involve "thinking outside the box" actions. So basically anything a player tries will receive feedback from the GM (me).

The players themselves can decide whether to team up with others to cover more ground or go it alone, or a bit of both.

I already have the story written out as I had developed it for a game I never (yet) got around to finishing.

And it's a pretty spicey one I feel.

For now I want to start with sign-ups.

This particular story needs 8 players to fill all the roles.

I will be giving the first player to sign up the first choice at the character list. The second player gets second choice, and so on.

The character list, including a brief description of the roles but not, of course, giving away secrets, will be made available after I have 8 sign-ups.

This should be fun without stress!

I would love to join, but recently I've not been as active on the forums as I'd like to. So I'm afraid I would end up joining, but wouldn't end up participating. And I wouldn't want to ruin it.
But consider me a spectator. :-D

CHARACTER SELECTION OPEN!!!

Open the hidden section below to read the intial plot and see what is publicly known about the characters up for grabs.

Spoiler

MURDER MOST FOUL
EPISODE #1:   A GOOD VINTAGE GONE BAD

The Time:   Early evening, September 17th, 1921.
The Location:   Lancaster Manor, New England, USA.

The Situation:   As the first stars of the night creep into view, seven guests arrive for a dinner at Lancaster Manor, once the isolated retreat of a powerful family, but now all that is left of a broken empire.

Having been summoned to the event, from the nearby town of Applewick, by hand-delivered invitations, perhaps some of the guests wonder why, perhaps some of them suspect why, and perhaps some of them know why...

The Guest List:

(http://i63.tinypic.com/sq2kx1.png)Angelica Crosley is a local writer, based in Applewick, but of nationwide reknown. She writes mystery novels, or at least tries to while avoiding autograph hunters on her way to buy the groceries.

Angelica is amused that a hand-delivered invitation has arrived at her door and expects an evening of staged entertainment to rival such novels of hers as:

"And Then There Were Nine." and "The Murder Of Dan Ackroyd".

Angelica is really looking forward to this dinner at Lancaster Manor!

Let the entertainment commence!
(http://i67.tinypic.com/9iuvjk.png)Benny Green is an ex-cop from New York City who moved to Applewick four years ago after having been discharged from the force on charges of corruption.

He now runs a disreputable P.I. business out of a shady upstairs office where mostly those with doubts about their spouse's fidelity tread.

Why a low-life like Benny was even considered on the list of guests to such an upper-class event is a mystery in and of itself to the other attendants.

Or is it...?
(http://i65.tinypic.com/20qnfrk.png)Dr. Gerald Killmurray is the only doctor in Applewick with the full credentials of actually holding a license to practice medicine.

Gerald is getting a bit on in years and his memory isn't quite what it used to be...

Not by a long shot...

He still recalls all of his medical training from his younger years but has a spot of trouble remembering, at times, exactly who the patient he is currently seeing is, and also remembering to turn up at dinners he is invited to.

However, he has written this one down and shows up on the right date...
(http://i66.tinypic.com/23w40tc.png)Madame Sky, as she is now known as after having legally changed her name, is a self-acclaimed psychic.

The Great War was followed by a boom in the public interest of occult and psychic phenomena and there are just as many in Applewick that feel the Madame is a fraud, riding the wave of that interest, as there are those who believe in her "abilities".

Her past is a mystery, having arrived in town and set up shop only about two years ago. "Madame Sky's Emporium Of Arcane Wisdom" also had the wisdom, it seems, to provide an extra, and convenient, back-door entrance for those who were too shy to enter through the front door.
(http://i65.tinypic.com/25hlkrr.png)Ret. Col. Maximus Burnes is a heavily decorated colonel and a hero of The Great War, now retired.

The entire nation knows of his descisive, but ultimately tragic, charge against the Hun, which casued enough disruption in its wake to open the way for the enemy front to break and the Battle Of Hummenberg Province to be won.

The same nation grieved over the news that Colonel Burnes was the only soldier recovered alive from the battle and that he was pulled out from amongst the bodies of fallen comrades-in-arms kicking, and screaming out to bring them all back with him... Even though this was impossible and their final battlefield remains their graves to this day.
(http://i68.tinypic.com/301njwi.png)UNKNOWN AND UNSELECTABLE

The Manor Occupants:

(http://i66.tinypic.com/f3e04z.png)Penelope Lancaster, the sole offspring of James and April Lancaster, inherited the Lancaster fortune when her parents died in a yachting accident three years ago.

She also inherited the family debt.

Forced to sell off most of the Lancaster estates and business ventures, Penelope now lives at the family's old country retreat, albiet quite comfortably for a young unmarried woman.

She has kept on only two of the staff from the old days: Mary Dorsey, the maid who rose to Head Of Service, and Hank Fellows, the best of the groundsmen.
(http://i67.tinypic.com/2ez4oso.png)Mary Dorsey is the last remaining service staff of Lancaster Manor.

She has been employed at the manor for a little over a year, during which time her drive to provide the best possible cleaning and service both terrified the other staff and propelled her to the position of Head Of Service well ahead of male butlers and other maids who had been with the family for, in some cases, a decade or more longer than herself.

When the yachting disaster struck, killing Penelope's parents, and most of the Lancaster family empire collapsed, Mary was chosen to remain at the manor by Penelope, the Lancaster heir.
(http://i66.tinypic.com/30ws3nl.png)Hank Fellows, born a deaf-mute, is the remaining groundskeeper at the Lancaster Manor.

Despite no formal education, he has learned to lipread at an intuitive level and can understand what is being said, even during complex conversations.

He cannot, however, communicate except through gesturing and facial expressions.

Perhaps this is what grants Hank the greenest of thumbs in his gardening duties:

His immobile "friends" in the garden having similar limitations?

VampireWombat can choose any character, being the first to sign up.

CaptainD should provide a first and alternative choice in the event that VampireWombat has not already chosen before him.

tzachs should provide a 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd choice in the event that VampriteWombat and/or CaptainD has not already posted choices...

and so on...

Basically, provide extra choices in the case that players who joined before you did have not posted yet.

I think I'm going to continue with the [hidden] [/hidden] view for the main game because it has a nicer B&W background feel for the game and also doesn't explode everyone's browsers.

UPDATE: Sorry guys, I've had a bit of a cold the last 2 days, which was when I planned to get everything ready.

Most likely over the weekend I can get everyone their character info and start the first Mingle Phase (more on that later when I explain gameplay)
Title: Re: Murder Most Foul (GAME PREP)
Post by: Mandle on Sun 16/09/2018 09:59:25
UPDATE: I've written the private infos for the most complicated characters so far but it's a lot more work than I expected. There's a lot of stuff to rewrite from different people's perspectives so that it's understandable to each player (hopefully).

The good news is that I really just have to recheck those characters to make sure that certain facts match up right and then write the less complex ones.

Hmmm... Hang tight!!!

EDIT: Almost done with the writing but too exhausted to continue confidently tonight... Only two and a bit characters left to write up... Tomorrow then!

Sorry for the delay. All characters are now written. I must just go through and reread/edit them for any potential inconsistancies.

I will be sending out the characters to the players later today and the first "Mingle" round can begin.

Almoooost theeeere...

Okay, after a slight further delay due to RL issues:

I am now sending out all the character info sheets to the players.

Please read your info sheet and feel free to PM me if anything in unclear.

DO NOT divulge anything in your info sheet to anyone else, whether a player in this game or not.

This is a game of many secrets and if any were spoiled then the whole point of the game will be ruined.

I trust everyone will respect how much work has gone into this game on my part and also realise that this is a one-off: meaning that it cannot simply be reset and restarted if someone spoils the plot. If the secrets are leaked or spoiled then all the work I've put into the game was for nothing.

Having to give up or divulge secrets within the game is a different matter of course: But please think carefully if your character would do so before you do. More on gameplay later!

NOTE WELL: The game still has not started yet. I will need some more hours to set up the first "Mingle" phase and explain some gameplay rules.

STILL NO POSTING IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE

Even though this was impossible and their final battlefield remains their graves to this day.
(http://i68.tinypic.com/301njwi.png)Graham Harlington wandered into Applewick perhaps somewhere around three years ago, mostly under everyone's radar.

Little is known of the man, except that he has been civil and polite within Applewick society, if a tad twitchy now and then, and, despite his ragged appearance, seems more than able to support himself financially. He bought a property and modest house on the outskirts of town where he lives alone. He is seen in town now and then taking meals at "The Applewick Cafe And Grill" and otherwise shopping for groceries in the normal fashion.

Mr. Harlington, however, has never seemed motivated to establish much of a social relationship with his new home of Applewick and, in turn, Applewick has neither sought such from him.

It's a bit of mystery, therefore, why he would be invited to a dinner at Lancaster Manor.

The Manor Occupants:

Perhaps this is what grants Hank the greenest of thumbs in his gardening duties:

The guests arrive at the Manor just as the first rumblings of thunder begin in the distance. An autumn New England stormfront appears to be rolling in over the tossing Atlantic.

Shown into the Manor's entryway, coats are taken, and then the guests are led to the dining room where a pre-dinner cocktail party begins.

Penelope Lancaster greets everyone with the opening toast. Both of the Manor staff, Mary Dorsey, and Hank Fellows are present, filling the roles of drinks and hors d'oeuvres waiters.

Location: The dining room is a long rectangular room, running west to east, with an impressive dining table down the middle. The dining table is surrounded by chairs and is decked out with beautful flatware, silverware, condiment trays, and candelabras. There is a fireplace at one end but it is inoperative due to modern steampipe-heating having been installed throughout the Manor some years before. There is a glass case full of china ornaments, trophies, and other nicknacks against the south wall, between several high, curtained windows. An impressive wallnut dining-room cabinet lies against the north wall.

Exits: N/A at this time.

[close]
This is the first "Mingle Phase".

Mingle Phases happen periodically to gather all characters into a single location to provide an environment for roleplay, group discussion, and other possible actions.

Now is the time to introduce yourself, mingle, and have a drink or two before the dinner begins (Wolfsbane Mojitos are NOT on the drinks menu).

The only available actions during this Mingle Phase are:

Examine >Character<: You must PM this action to the game host and may receive additional information about the character you have been glancing at. Your chance to determine information about others in this way is based on your character's abilities. Someone more astute at studying human nature might have a better chance to pick up on subtle body language, for example. This action may be taken once per Mingle Phase.

Whisper To >Character< "Whatever you want to say": You must PM this action to the game host to whisper something to another character. Include what exactly you are whispering. The rest of the characters will be aware that you whispered something to that character, but will not hear what was said. This action may be taken multiple times per Mingle Phase but only after each has been processed by the game host. You will know once it has been processed because the game thread will note that you whispered to someone.

Which brings us to:

IMPORTANT RULE #1: NO COMMUNICATION COMCERNING THE GAME OUTSIDE OF THE GAME STRUCTURE IS ALLOWED FOR ANY PLAYERS!!! PLEASE DO NOT COMMUNICATE ABOUT GAME CONTENT OUTSIDE OF THE GAME WITH ANYONE ELSE, PLAYER OR NON-PLAYER, UNTIL THE GAME IS OVER!!!

Apart from these special actions the players are now free to speak in this thread.

It would be useful if the players could start the first line of each post with their character name bolded as a title and then post what they want to say below that to avoid confusion in a game like this with many characters to keep track of.

For example:

QuoteJohn Billingsly

Hello everyone! Quite a proper pip-pip party by the looks of it, eh?

Try to stay in character and remember the motivations and/or secrets that your character holds and may not want to give away at the drop of a hat right off the bat, and all that!

Remember that the information contained in your character info sheet PM is particular to yourself only and that not everyone knows what you do. And, in turn, you may not know what others do.

Player Character List:

VampireWombat is Dr. Gerald Killmurray, the town doctor.
CaptainD is Benny Green, the local PI.
tzachs is Madame Sky, the local psychic.
Riaise is Mary Dorsey, the Manor maid.
dayowlron is Ret. Col. Maximus Burnes, retired WWI vet.
cat is Angelica Crosley, local mystery writer.
Kastchey is Penelope Lancaster, the Manor owner.
Stupot is Hank Fellows, the Manor groundsman.
Mandle is Graham Harlington, the town loner.

Map? Was I supposed to bring a map? I have a collection of maps in a drawer at home. One from every city I've visited, you know. 3 from Boston alone. I don't suppose there are any Boston Creme pies for dessert, are there?

Boston Creme Pie sounds delicious. I could go for that. When I got the invitation I found a map and looked it over, but when I left I forgot to bring it with me so had to go on memory, but I am pretty sure this was where it was leading to.

If I got a map, most likely Liza put it up for me. Or is her name Mary? Maybe Penelope. No matter, I'm sure she put it up for me. Oh, speaking of names, I don't believe we've been formerly, err formally introduced. I am Dr. Gerald Killmurray, PHD.

Greetings, good people.  The name's Green, Benny Green.  Private Investigator at your service.  Although... I'm sure none of you fine upstanding people would need the services of one such as myself, of course.

// They look as gullible a group of mugs as I ever saw.  Something's making me a little nervous though.  This place, this invitation... why am I here?  Feels like a set-up of some kind... still, I'll play along for now. //

Madame Sky

Hello everyone! I'm Madame Sky, but I don't really feel I need to introduce myself.
Penelope, dear, thank you so kindly for inviting me. I'll have a glass, thanks.

This place, though. I'm getting some bad feelings. No premonitions yet, I'm afraid. Perhaps the glass of wine will warm me up. I feel I need my senses sharp today.

//Looks at Benny Green
I am sensing something about you, though, honey. I'm sensing you're confused, or I'm confused? I don't believe we've met before, have we?

I'll take a glass of sherry, if you don't mind - thanks, dear.

I guess I don't have to introduce myself, considering the amount of autograph hunters running around in Applewick, trying to catch me whenever I step outside my house. But I don't want to give you an impression of incivility. My name is Angelica Crosley and I'm delighted to be here this evening.

// Raises her glass

// Damn that dame, she's good.  She's looking at me as if she has no idea who I am, like we've never met.  Of course I guess it's natural - she wouldn't want anyone to know or even guess at our little arrangement.  Guess I'll play the role.  Hmm... I wonder if she's had one of her famous "premonitions" about this evening?  Well a guy can't help but wonder, even if I know she's a phony. //

Why Madame Sky, so nice to meet you!  For the first time.  As we've never, uh, met before.  Hehe.  Here, have another drink.

// Oh real smooth, Benny, real smooth.  I guess I shouldn't have started drinking BEFORE getting to this lousy party. //

// Nods slightly at Hank, makes a small gesture as if instructing him to stay nearby.
// Stands in a prominent place to get everyone's attention

Tonight is a very special night.

Why would that be, you must be asking yourselves? There was no note of any special occasion on your invitations, and no news of any recent event, be it glamorous or sad, have reached our quiet little town, is that right? Well, if this is what you are pondering right now, you are correct. This party is not in honor of anything that happened in my life. It is in your honor, my dear guests.

The tragic accident of my dear late parents is well known among you all. They often say that the hour of death cannot be forecast, but how does knowledge of that help one prepare for the loss of those who are the most dear to them? Months back from tonight, the terrible news left me devastated, shaken and... very, very alone. As if on the inside, I was a child yet again, deprived of, but still longing for the careless joy of the childhood. Perhaps it was this very feeling that brought me here, to the manor which was my family's old summer retreat, and the place of so many of my happy memories.

Moving here was not an easy decision. When I was craving support and stability more than ever, I was to become a stranger in Applewick. Of course, even as an adult I would visit the town once in a while, but the family affairs always kept me so busy that I had never really felt I belonged with the community. I was uncomfortable... oh no, not even that. I was terrified. Yes, you heard me right - I was terrified of the warm, dear, lovely people of Applewick! But I am getting ahead of myself, am I not.

Shortly after I arrived at my family estate, the estate which I, for the first time, was the sole proprietor of, I was surprised to discover that someone here remembered me... or rather, they remembered a nosy little girl whose name eluded him, and who'd stubbornly try to peek into his office. Yes Dr. Killmurray, I am looking at you. This discovery, though unsuspected, gave me the first warm feeling of familiarity in the town that would eventually become my new home.

And from there on, life has started becoming a little easier to bear. Angelica, we have had so many delightful conversations that would always help drive the dark thoughts away. Madame Sky, you offered me both hospitality and hope for a change for the better. Mr. Harlington... our casual chat at The Applewick Cafe And Grill has become an habit after a while, and good habits help a woman make some peace with herself. Colonel Burnes, my father always spoke highly of you and I am honored to have you join us tonight. Mr. Green, you were of a great help to me when I was forced to take over my family affairs.

// Raises the glass to eye level
May we make this lovely gathering customary, rather than extraordinary.

GAME HOST NOTE:

I have been asked an interesting question from a player:

They asked if it was okay to invent background details for your character and also if it was okay to lie about the actual facts in your character profile:

The answers are yes and yes:

You can invent irrelevant stuff like background, family, etc. It makes the game richer. But this cannot be used to try to deliberately incriminate another player.

You can lie about actual facts in your profile. In fact you should lie if one of your character's goals is in danger.

THE CLOCK STRIKES EIGHT.

Spoiler

MURDER MOST FOUL
EPISODE #1:   A GOOD VINTAGE GONE BAD

The Time:   Evening, September 17th, 1921.
The Location:   Lancaster Manor, New England, USA.

The Situation:   The Atlantic stormfront surges in over Applewick. The first distant thunder reverberates briefly through the old timber frame of Lancaster Manor as the grandfather clock in the entryway begins to chime eight of the hour.

By the time the eighth chime sounds, lightning is striking all around, the entire Manor thrumming with the thunder-claps that follow bare seconds, if even that, later.

A wall of rain suddenly strikes the high picture windows ranged along the south wall of the dining room with shocking intensity as they light up with yet another flash, sending stark illumination across the room in diagonal slants, grotesque parodies of the solid rectangular structures of the windows which granted them access.

Penelope Lancaster, at the head of the table, pulls a cord which rings the ship's bell recovered from her parent's yacht. The solemn tone gains the attention of all and a pause between lightning strikes allows her to be heard:

"Let dinner be served!"

The guests circle the long dining room table, searching for their name-cards, and then, once everyone is seated, Mary Dorsey reappears from the kitchen with a bottle of champagne.

She holds it aloft and, stepping out from behind her, Hank Fellows appears with a gardening machete and, with one precise, powerful swing, slices the cork from the lip of the bottle.

POP! A brief fountain of bubbles, and then Mary pours a little to each guest.

Penelope rises, glass in hand, and says:

"Another toast but not the last! To friends near and dear!"

The guests all rise, repeat the toast, sit, and drain their glasses.

Lightning strikes somewhere just outside, the BOOM instantaneous, and the lights go out for a second or two.

Nervous giggles are suddenly replaced by screams, when the electricity kicks back in, to the sight of Graham Harlington standing, face and body twisted into a rictus, with froth foaming out over his voluminous beard.

He falls back into his chair and then crashes face-first into the well-set china plates before him, smashing them to pieces.

Spoiler

(http://i66.tinypic.com/f3e04z.png)Penelope Lancaster, the sole offspring of James and April Lancaster, inherited the Lancaster fortune when her parents died in a yachting accident just over a year ago.

Location: The dining room is a long rectangular room, running west to east, with an impressive dining table down the middle. The dining table is surrounded by chairs and is decked out with beautful flatware, silverware, condiment trays, and candelabras. There is a fireplace at one end but it is inoperative due to modern steampipe-heating having been installed throughout the Manor some years before. There is a glass case full of china ornaments, trophies, and other nicknacks against the south wall, between several high, curtained windows. An impressive wallnut dining-room cabinet lies against the north wall.

Graham Harlington slumps dead in his chair, face-down in the smashed chinaware he will now never eat off of. Foam bubbles from his mouth into the pool already soaking into the fine linen tablecloth.

Exits: N/A at this time.

Poison... I know of no poison that would kill so quickly on its own. Which means that this is something I don't know of, it reacted with something else, or it wasn't all at once. Of course there's no way to be 100% sure without a proper autopsy...

My good Colonel, of course we shall investigate, but in due time.  For now it is essential that everyone stay as calm as possible, and that no-one leaves this room.  As for who would have a motive... well, I have my suspicions, but it would hardly be prudent of me to tell everyone right now, would it?

I do wonder, Doctor, if some kind of paralytic agent may have been used.  A muscle relaxant or similar.  Perhaps in the form of a tincture... hmm, speaking of which, I think I'll get myself another drink.

THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS.

Spoiler

MURDER MOST FOUL
EPISODE #1:   A GOOD VINTAGE GONE BAD

The Time:   Evening, September 17th, 1921.
The Location:   Lancaster Manor, New England, USA.

The Situation:
The stunned shock wears off and everyone starts throwing out options about what to do.

Several opinions state the obvious that the authorities should be contacted but Penelope Lancaster points out that, during such brutal Altantic weather, the Manor is cut off from the town of Applewick due to the flooding caused by storm-surges rushing in through the lower gullies, over-topping even the bridges.

As yet another volley of lightning and thunder crashes around the Manor, everyone realizes that there will be no outside help until sometime tomorrow.

It is up to them all to make the best of the situation until then, and maybe the crime can even be solved in the meanwhile...

Spoiler

(http://i66.tinypic.com/f3e04z.png)Penelope Lancaster, the sole offspring of James and April Lancaster, inherited the Lancaster fortune when her parents died in a yachting accident just over a year ago.

WANDER PHASE!!! ONLY PMS TO GAME HOST PLEASE!!!

FIRST WANDER PHASE OPEN

The start of the first Wander Phase is now open.

At this time only the Manor rooms directly accessible from either the Dining Room or the Entryway are available for investigation. More options of rooms to go to will be available after the start of this phase has been resolved.

During this start of the Wander Phase each guest may PM to the game host which room they are going to in this fashion:

QuoteGo to >room name<

One other movement option available is:

QuoteFollow >character name<

This would land you in the same room as the followed character. The followed player may or may not be aware they were followed depending on which character they and you are playing and a random dice roll. If they are not aware of having been followed it will only appear as if you happened to choose the same room by coincidence, otherwise they will be notified via game host PM that they were deliberately followed by you.

The next step is to PM the game host with whatever action you may wish to perform in that room.

For example, some basic ones are:

QuoteSearch >hotspot<

or

QuoteHide >item< in >hotspot<

Note that a character hiding an item in a certain location will only appear to the other players present in the same room as if they were searching that location.

More in-depth searching/hiding gameplay will be available to players in the second half of this Wander Phase, as will more movement options and also private interaction options between players that find themselves in the same room together.

For now, here are the available rooms players can move to and perform a secondary Search/Hide action in:

NOTE THAT ALL MOVE, SEARCH, AND HIDE ACTIONS MUST BE ONLY SENT VIA PM TO THE GAME HOST AND MUST NOT BE MENTIONED IN THE THREAD!

AVAILABLE LOCATIONS:
Spoiler

DINING ROOM

Hotspots: Glass Case, Cabinet, Fireplace, Dead Body.

Exits: North to Kitchen, East to Entryway.

KITCHEN
Location: The kitchen of Lancaster Manor has an expansive island counter for the preperation of food, overhung by racks of pots, pans, and cooking utensils. Ranging around the available wall-space are units of lower drawers and upper cabinets. An oven complete with a brass-hooded chimney-flume above it sits against the west wall. On the east wall lies the door leading down to the cellar. A door to the back yard is set into the north wall, and the door to the dining room lies south.

Hotspots: Drawers, Cabinets, Oven.

Exits: North to Back Yard, Down to Cellar, South to Dining Room.

ENTRYWAY
Location: The entryway to Lancaster Manor is paved with a diamond-shaped checkerboard pattern of black and white tiles. The walls are of deeply, and expertly, stained oak. A sizable wrought-iron and crystal chandelier hangs over the center of the room. A staircase leads up to the second floor along the eastern wall, on the side of which is a storage closet door. Next to the impressive main door to the south is a rack of coat-hooks from which all the guests' overcoats hang. To the north is a door marked with a sign reading "W.C." and to the east an open archway leads into the parlour. A door to the west leads to the dining room.

Hotspots: Storage Closet, Coat Rack (If searching and/or hiding in coat rack then a particular guest's coat must be specified).

Exits: North to W.C., East to Parlour, South to Front Yard, West to Dining Room, Up to Second Floor.

W.C.
Location: The W.C. of Lancaster Manor is a spotless yet tiny room, ensconced tastefully next to the staircase of the entryway. Every surface gleams with cleanliness, from the polished brass tap fixtures over the china sink, to the gleaming toilet, and to the expensive-looking framed mirror. Under the sink is a cabinet. There is a small, wire trash can for the disposal of paper towels after hand-washing. The single door in the south wall leads to the entryway.

Hotspots: Sink Cabinet, Mirror, Trash Can.

Exits: South to Entryway.

PARLOUR
Location: The parlour of Lancaster Manor, draped all around with deep blue velvet hangings, is an intimate-feeling space despite its size. A lovely black harpsichord sits in the south-east corner. A gramophone on a delicate spider-like table lies in the south-west corner. A liquor cabinet presides over the north-west corner. And an elegant tea-table with four chairs lies in the center of the room. An open archway leads west to the entryway. A door leads north to the study.

Hotspots: Harpsichord, Gramophone, Liquor Cabinet, Tea-Table.

Exits: West to Entryway, North to Study.

INITIAL WANDER PHASE MOVEMENT

Initial Location: Dining Room.

Dr. Gerald Killmurray, the town doctor, exits east from the Dining Room, towards the Entryway.
Benny Green, the local PI, exits north from The Dining Room, towards the Kitchen.
Madame Sky, the local psychic, remains in the Dining Room.
Mary Dorsey, the Manor maid, exits north from The Dining Room, towards the Kitchen.
Ret. Col. Maximus Burnes, retired WWI vet, exits north from The Dining Room, towards the Kitchen.
Angelica Crosley, local mystery writer, remains in the Dining Room.
Penelope Lancaster, the Manor owner, exits east from the Dining Room, towards the Entryway.
Hank Fellows, the Manor groundsman, exits north from The Dining Room, towards the Kitchen.

These are the first movements made by all characters from the initial location of the Dining Room after the first Mingle Phase.

From here on in all movements and actions will only be visible to the players (via PM) and will not be visible in this thread.

This will continue until the next Mingle Phase opens to gather everyone back into the same room together.

UPDATE: Current game conditions have been sent to all players via PM. Awaiting all actions before moving on.

NO POSTING IN THREAD BY ANYONE UNTIL THEN PLEASE.

GAME HOST NOTE:

All players should now be aware (via PM) that they have one last action available during this Wander Phase before everyone will regroup for a new Mingle Phase and may post and/or roleplay in the thread freely once again.

No movement is possible as spending a last action on a movement would be pointless, but during the next Wander Phase I will have a lot more time to GM it and more movement options will be possible, including moving to more than one room and also opening up as-yet unaccessable rooms.

The next Mingle Phase will open sometime between 12-24 hours from the time of this post, so get those last actions in while you can ;-)

STILL NO POSTING IN THE THREAD PLEASE

The Situation:
After a brief bout of wandering everyone realizes that they are getting quite a bit peckish, having not actually eaten any of the dinner they were supposed to be enjoying.

Gathering back in the Dining Room to pick at the plates of delicious, yet cooling, food that was to have been a pleasant and civilized dining experience, people look each other in the eye, or perhaps glance away, and the conversation begins with...

A CRASH OF THUNDER NEARBY OUTSIDE!!!

SECOND MINGLE PHASE OPEN

The start of the second Mingle Phase is now open.

Same rules as the previous Mingle Phase: All players may now talk openly by posting in the thread, and also may attempt any other action previously available, such as Examine >character<, Whisper >blah blah blah< to >character<  , or anything else they might like to try, via PM to myself, the Game Host.

E-entry room? Did I? As for the body... I-I don't generally deal with people who are already dead. I can tell you he is dead. Beyond that, I'd be unable to tell you a thing without the proper equipment. Most of which I don't have. The rare times I am in need of tests, I just send off the blood or other sample to a lab. D-do you want me to take a sample to send to a lab or something? I-I'm not sure that I could even legally do that without permission from the next of kin. A-actually I think if I even touched the body I would be breaking the law.

It seems we will have to wait some time until the weather calms down before we can either leave or contact the authorities.
I suggest that we try to find out what has happened here in the meantime.

Don't be stupid, people.  I'm a Private Investigator - I'm looking for clues, not money.  I already have a good idea of which one of you people protesting so innocently is guilty of murder - along with some of your other dirty secrets.  I need more evidence to prove it though - maybe THAT'S why you're objecting to me clue-hunting, eh?

Stow the objections and let me get on with my inquiries.  Just remember - YOU'RE ALL SUSPECTS.

Objecting to clue-hunting? You were fiddling with an unconscious lady! What on earth were you looking for? What is your relation with Madame Sky anyway? Were you paid by her for investigations? You mentioned something like this earlier this evening.

CLUES, doll, I was looking for CLUES.  What's so hard to understand about that?  The thing about detective work is, sometimes you don't know something is a clue until later... so you investigate everything possible.  I wonder what I would find if I were to examine YOU?

As for my relation to Madame Sky... yeah I've done some work for her.  She's not the only one who needs assistance from a PI from time to time.  But exactly what our arrangement was is strictly confidential and absolutely none of your business.

Okay, okay... let's calm things down.  Is there any more booze in this joint?

I agree on calming things down, Mr. Green. However, I suggest you refrain from drinking any more booze, as you call it. While you were merely looking for clues, I found proof that Graham Harlington's drink was poisoned.

Which, of course, brings me to the following question: who had the opportunity to put poison in his drink? Mary and Hank, you were serving the drinks - did you notice anything suspicious?

No, ma'am, nothing suspicious that I can recall. The plates, glasses and cutlery were all cleaned thoroughly and laid out on the dining table before the guests arrived. The room was left unattended for a short time, while we greeted each guest. The bottle of champagne was fully sealed, as you all saw. If I may ask, what kind of proof did you find?

Err. If I may interrupt. But I agree that searching an unconscious woman is a bit uncivilized. Unless you believe she was also poisoned. In which case, such suspicion should have been spoken to me so I could attempt to counter its effects. But she appears to have just passed out.

I found this bottle empty. It's calmative pills subscribed to Penelope Lancaster. But she was unaware it was empty. It's possible she was sedated by someone. Though I still object to anyone nearing her unless trying to awaken her.

Mary, I had a strong suspicion that poison was involved. So I took a closer look at the glass. Since I took a chemistry class at university and also did a lot of research for my books, I know quite a bit about the topic.

On the other hand, doctor, I don't know much about pharmacology. Considering the amount of missing pills, was the dose life-threatening? Can you give some antidote? When do you think the pills were given to her?

As there seems to be no other side effects, I would say if she was drugged that it was a fairly low dose. At this point there seems little to do other than to let her sleep it off unless other symptoms show. As for when, it's hard to say. Especially if mixed with alcohol.
As for the rest of the pills, I have a feeling they might have been use on our umm, corpse. They could have been mixed with a poison to umm, expedite the reaction. Of course this is merely a guess...

Well, it looks like I'm back from the dead!

//Staying silent for a few seconds, for a dramatic pause, then speaking while looking at the floor, slightly shaking

I.. have a confession to make.
I am a fraud. Or rather, I was a fraud. I was using Mr Green's services to get info on people and use them to prey on the gullible.
I am ashamed and truly sorry.
I was trying to follow the footsteps of my ancestors but I just didn't possess any of their powers.
That is, until now.

//Looks back up, suddenly with newly found confidence.

i just had an eye opening experience. You see, I have never been close to another person's demise.
Once I touched the body of poor Mr. Harlington, it's like everything came to me at once. It opened the gates and released my powers.
I had visions like none before.
I smelled mud and tasted blood in my mouth. This is not my memory, but Mr. Harlington's memory, in that I'm certain.
I felt a crushing weight pressing down on my body. As I tried to get around it and escape from it in a panic, I noticed, for a brief moment, a triangular gap in whatever was on top of me.
In the gap I saw the sky and then a rifle barrel appeared. The bayonet at the end of the barrel prodded around above me for a bit. Then I sensed footsteps moving on.

Does this ring a bell to anybody? Did you see anybody carrying a rifle? Colonel, do you carry a rifle? Is there any place around here which has mud and we can perhaps go and search?

Anyway, this concluded my vision. Following that I was able to float in the air here and listen in on your conversation.
Now, checking my pockets it seems that my precious tarot cards are missing.
They could not have left the room. As I floated in the air I saw 3 people kneeling over me: the doctor, Mr Green and our sweet host.
Did one of you, perhaps mistakenly, take my cards? Can you expose what you have in your pockets so we're sure?
Or, rather, if you did nothing wrong, surely you won't object to a third party, like Mary here for example, to perform a little body search on you.

While you were passed out, it was discovered that calmative pills were missing. Do you think you were drugged? Or was that seizure a side effect of your visions? I could not find anything in your glass, but this can be because of my limited chemical skills.

In the meantime, I realized that "mud and blood" must refer to trenches and battlefields. I asked Colonel Burnes if he knew of any guest here having served during the Great War, but he sadly didn't answer my question.

I think it was a side effect of my visions, but I cannot tell for sure. It's possible that just my close proximity to the poisoned body was enough for my body to absorb portions of the poison? Or to absorb whatever chemicals you were using on it? This is merely guesswork, I'm afraid.

That's right, Miss Penelope, I cleared out the trash cans earlier today while I was cleaning in preparation for the guests arrival.

Madame Sky, if I may, I have a question. Do you think, perhaps, what you saw might not have been a memory, but a vision of the future? Maybe you saw Mr. Harlington's funeral, what with him being buried, and something awful may be happening, given the rifle. And also, back when you were a fraud, did you ever ask Mr. Green to find any information on Mr. Harlington? It would be a great help to know a bit more about him, especially if he has any connections to the guests here tonight.

I haven't asked Mr Green for any information on Mr. Harlington, unfortunately. If you do have information, though, now would be a great time to share. I'm sure if we all work together, we can figure this out.

As for me knowing Graham Harlington, I do believe his face is a little familiar but I know there was never a Graham Harlington in my company. I may have just seen him on base or at a local bar during the quiet times.

Mary Dorsey

So I wonder what Madame Sky's vision means, then?

Perhaps...and I apologise if this seems insensitive, but given the circumstances...perhaps someone should search the body, to see if Mr. Harlington is carrying anything that could help us work out what is going on? Or has someone searched him already? Ms. Crosley, Madame Sky, you stayed in the dining room before, did either of you find anything?

Angelica Crosley

I searched him and found nothing - not even a billfold or wallet. Strange, isn't it?

Madame Sky

Same here, I didn't see a thing. Well, except for the visions. Meaning to say, I didn't see a thing in the physical world.

Stares at Benny Green

I'm still waiting to get my cards back, you know.

The Situation:
After the dramatic events in the dining room are over, everyone imbibes in a bit of sustenance from the banquet laid out, and then decide to spread out in an effort to cover more ground.

The storm seems to be diminishing but rain still falls in sheets against the windows of the manor and the occasional thunder-clap sounds off in the distance now and then.

Spoiler

(http://i66.tinypic.com/f3e04z.png)Penelope Lancaster, the sole offspring of James and April Lancaster, inherited the Lancaster fortune when her parents died in a yachting accident just over a year ago.

WANDER PHASE!!! ONLY PMS TO GAME HOST PLEASE!!!

SECOND WANDER PHASE OPEN

The start of the second Wander Phase is now open.

Spoiler

DINING ROOM
Location: The dining room is a long rectangular room, running west to east, with an impressive dining table down the middle. The dining table is surrounded by chairs and is decked out with beautful flatware, silverware, condiment trays, and candelabras. There is a fireplace at one end but it is inoperative due to modern steampipe-heating having been installed throughout the Manor some years before. There is a glass case full of china ornaments, trophies, and other nicknacks against the south wall, between several high, curtained windows. An impressive wallnut dining-room cabinet lies against the north wall.

Graham Harlington lies dead on the floor, covered by a linen tablecloth.

CELLAR
Location: The dim light and dusty odor of the cellar of Lancaster Manor only adds to the oppressive feeling of a great weight of physical structure and family history pressing down from above.

The cellar includes a wall of wine-racks, mostly empty, a locked chest, a steam furnace, boiling away nicely, and a coal-chute full of coal at the bottom in the bin and with a rusty-looking trapdoor at the top of the chute.

Hotspots: Wine Racks, Locked Chest, Steam Furnace, Coal-Bin, Coal-Chute Trapdoor.

Exits: Up to Kitchen.

STUDY
Location: This study is charmingly wallpapered all around with sepia-toned maps of the world from the century just passed. A massive row of leaded-glass windows dominates the northern wall, providing the majestic vista over the back-yard garden area. Ensconced within this wall is a modest glass door providing access to the outside but, for now, too much rain still lashes against it to make going outside a viable option.
Within the room itself is an impressive oak desk, with a drawer on each side, and a massive bookcase divided into four quarters: A-G, H-M, N-S, and T-Z

Hotspots: Left Desk Drawer, Right Desk Drawer, Bookcase A-G, Bookcase H-M, Bookcase N-S, Bookcase T-Z.

Exits: North to Garden, South to Parlour.

ARGH.... Real life sucks! Hopefully issues are dealt with for now.

Finally I've updated all player's actions via PM and now the second part of this wander phase can continue.

Please send me the next actions via PM.

As before this is a two-action phase: You can move and act, or act twice, or interact with someone in the same room in some way, or with two people in your room.
