As for the worlds, I decided:

 - Ignis  - will be the first world(that was decided from the first day)
 - Terra (earth world)
 - Ventus(wind world)
 - Aqua(water world)

And the final world will be Crystallus, the light and crystal world.
I thank all that helped with ideas(not many I might had, but the necessary ones are the ones who want to help  ;) ) and please continue to do so! I will use most of them!

What happened to Darkness?? :(

I definitely like this image!

One critic: The sleeve of the Queen looks very VERY rectangular. I think it's rather odd...

But aside from that: Great job!!

Cheers, Yurina

I'm glad you got inspired by the Myst series (I never played them though, but I heard they're awesome). Playing games is always inspiring, at least for me. As for the questions:

Characters: 3d renders (if it's high quality), otherwise photo's
Element: Darkness!!! *evil grin* 8) (And secondly, if you need a second one, wind. )

The plot sounds nice! I'd say, go for it!

Cheers,

The hair is superb :)

I definitely agree! ^.^

The shadows on the tree trunk could still be a little colder to match the leaves, though.

Heh. I use this kind of contrast at purpose: I just love it the way it looks now. Maybe I'll post other versions or completely different trees in the future, but I'm satisfied now.

And I'll try to start the game-in-production thread ASAP, but my coder is temporarily away, so that'll have to wait.

Until next time,

Nice looking tree, and sprite!

Now that you've darkened the shadows at the top of the tree trunk, I'm wondering if maybe it would look a little better if you also darkened them a little at the bottom around the roots. Not much, just a few pixels. It might give a little better sense of depth.

I'm on it!

EDIT: Within a minute I made this:

EDIT 2: Since my USB-stick is six feet under, I uploaded the wrong thing a few secs ago. Sorry for that... :-\

Is this what you meant?

Ding, ding, ding! Update!

I improved the shadows of the treetrunk!

Here's the result:

I hope it turned out well enough...

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

EDIT: Before I forget: thanks buloght and monkey_05_06!

Thanks for the C&C everyone!

One thing that does come to mind, is your character has a very well-defined black border, while the tree doesn't. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it does distinguish your character from their surroundings, but for consistency, you may want to alter either the character sprite, or the outer edge of certain elements.

You're right about that, but I'm planning to make all interactable things with black borders, and all none-interactable with a screentone that is slightly darker as it's darkest shad (when that is pitch-black I'll use an other colour when necissary).

The way the leaves are blue when in shadow looks really nice. It looks odd, however, that the trunk doesn't do the same. Might I suggest you create 'warm' trees and 'cold' trees?

I would add bluish shadow to the trunk to create a colder tree, and a warm golden colour for the shadow of the leaves of the warm, sunset tree. By selective use of the trees you could give create different atmospheres / times of day.

You're right about that. I'll look into it!

I'll be working on an improved version for now, it won't take very long!

I like it, it has a SNES RPG game type of feel to it :D If its supposed to look like a bushy round shaped tree I think it works. I dunno if the lighting would need to be adjusted if you wanted lots of these on the screen at once tho...

I'm very glad you like it!

I thought of making some darker versions which are less detailed when I use more of them in one screen. That also makes the landscape more intresting, doesnt it? ^.^

Critics' Lounge / C&C for my sprite tree

Hi all,

A few months ago I started up an RPG (I have several thread about it lying around on the forum, so you might have noticed ;)) and I'm having a bit of trouble on drawing trees. So I ask your help once again.

Here's my tree (with an example of the sprites I use next to it):

1x

2x

Is there anything odd about it? Does it look unnatural? Should I change some colours?

I'll be awaiting your reply!

Cheers,
~Yurina

I have some C&C:

- Does she have to be an illusion/dark boss? If so, then these colours are great.
- The colours aren't fully changed. You didn't paintover edges and parts of the gauntlets, so she they have the same colours as the wings.
- You shouldn't make such a big difference between the brightness of your colours. try to lower the contrast in the colourtones you used to recolour her. Especially the hair needs some restyling...

I'm not very fond of paintovers, but this one looks kind of cute.

I really love to see that the game is developing, and especially the map looks great!

Cheers ;D,

MashPotato, have you ever thought of making drawing tutorials? With art like this you'll surely get a lot of visitors on your site who wish to view the tutorial. (At least I would ^.^)

I wish you well in the contest!

I already became scared: I run my pc at 1280x1024 (because of my LCD monitor) and it already takes up to 3/4 of the screen!

I'd love to see the simple version sometime...

I really like the sprites, but I do have some critic on the skirt:
- It looks like it's about to fall off her hips. Is this intentional?
- The skirt is VERY small compared to other schoolskirts I ever saw...

It's kind of funny you mentioned this. After I made the sprite shorter, I was kind of wondering if the skirt looked like it was sitting a little high, since it's so close to her belly button. I guess I needn't worry! I was going for something a little sexy/suggestive, but I didn't think I had reached "falling off her hips."

I guess I have to confess membership in short skirt fanclub (along with Theeph!).  :-[ I've debated whether to lengthen it a pixel or two. I finally figured I'd just start animating her and lengthen it if necessary. But like I mentioned earlier, I don't mean to be off-putting to anyone. I guess you're saying I should lengthen it?

Anata hentai! ;)

Maybe it doesn't really fall-off, but I personally wear my skirts around my belly button. That's why I asked.

I personally prefer skirts that reach to my knees, but maybe that's because I'm a girl...

Besides of that: I like it!
