Have you made a game in 2014 and want it to compete in the AGS Awards 2014? This is the topic where to showcase it!
Post a download link, a brief description and some pictures (thumbnails preferred, here is an excellent FYC post from last year).

Do not be shy, by posting your game you are helping the players who will take some of their time to play/nominate/vote!

Usual remarks:
  • if you think a game deserves mention but the author isn't around, post a FYC for them! The more worthy games we get here, the better is for everyone!
  • this thread is for FYC posts only, if you want to discuss the awards go here!

Site & Forum Reports / Non AGS game in the AGS database
« on: 16 Dec 2014, 13:07 »
Some gentleman posted a game in the AGS database, it doesn't look like an AGS game at all.
Maybe a friendly webmaster could purge the entry and drown the offender? It would be lovely!

This article by Ghost popped up in my RSS feed; it talks about rules, conventions and archetypes of the genre.
Found it interesting, decided to share with you all (and made a promise to myself not to myself play it safe in 2015 ;)). Enjoy!

edit: disregard, just as I was writing this, files were found!

Hello Advanced Technical Forum, I am new here.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a musician who wrote .midi music for one of my games (Colourwise). He asked me if I still got those files in my machine, becase he lost them. Quite unfortunately, the PC where I backed up all old data is far far away from me.

So here is the question: is there a painless way to extract those MIDI files from music.vox? I had some ideas involving "tricking" the IDE, but I am not on Windows, so I can't try them.

Any help appreciated!

Going through the "Reforming the Help Vampire", it seems the AGS community is faring quite good too.

edit 24/04/14: results here!

As promised, I open this thread to discuss (and finally decide) proposals on categories for next year's Awards.
A number of points have been made, unfortunately I can't paste/quote/link them all; some of them were:  m0ds, Snarky, dactylopus, Andail, Abisso, Problem, qNemo.
Andail did set up a poll too (results here), which gives us a general idea of where we are heading.

After a bit of brainstorming, these were the proposals people came up with:

  • Should we separate commercial games from freeware games? If so, how?
    • Yes, "Best Commercial game", commercial games can compete only in this category.
    • Yes, for each category (Music, Backgrounds, etc.) have a "best commercial game" and "best freeware game".
    • Yes, have a "Best Freeware" reserved to freeware games.
    • Leave things as they are.
  • Should we trim the awards categories? We could... (non-exclusive)
    • ...merge ________ into Best Music&Sound:
      • Music/SFX/Voice into Best Music&Sound.
      • Music/SFX into Best Music&Sound (leave Voice-Acting alone).
      • Voice/SFX into Best Sound Design (leave Music alone).
      • Leave things as they are.
    • ...merge Original Story/Dialogue into Best Writing.
      • Yes.
      • Leave things as they are.
    • ...merge ________ into Best Artwork:
      • Backgrounds/Animation/Character-Art into Best Artwork.
      • Backgrounds/Character-Art into Best Artwork (leave Animation alone).
      • replace BGs/CA/Ani with Best Sprite Art plus Best Artwork.
      • Leave things as they are.
    • ...merge ________ into Best Game Design:
      • Programming/Gameplay/Puzzles into Best Game Design.
      • Gameplay/Puzzles into Best Game Design (leave programming alone).
      • forget it! Drop Best Gameplay and leave Best Puzzles intact!
      • Leave things as they are.
    • ...drop best Player Character/Non-Player Character:
      • yup, both
      • merge them in Best Character (whether Player controlled or else)
      • Leave things as they are.
  • Should we add more categories?
For this question, just input 0 or more categories. The ones which will reach >50% of the ballots will pass.
        To date, suggestions have been:
            Best Horror                        Best Comedy
            Best Drama                         Best Science Fiction
            Best Setting/Gameworld             Best Atmosphere
            Best Experimental Game             Best Resource
Best Newcomer**                    Best Puzzle (single Puzzle)
Best Game in Communal Series*      Most Daring Interface
Most Thought Provoking Experience  Best User Interface
            Best Voice Actor (single)

            * (OcenSpirit Dennis, Reality on the Norm, Maniac Mansion Mania, etc.)
** or Best Breakthrough of the Year / Debut game, see this

       or add your own.

Cast your preferences (like so) or post to propose more options. You can change your preferences, but please warn me if you do so.
Thanks for your participation!

This popped up in my RSS reader, I wanted to share with forum members who might have missed it, since, well, "What happened to DITA?" has become a FAQ.

A quick search in the database shows that there are more than one hundred games in the "Newly added games (not yet categorised)".
If I recall correctly, the category is chosen by the panelist, when s/he manages to rate the game. As it stands the backlog for the panelists is huge, there are some uncategorised games from 2009.

I think it would be a great idea to give the game-makers the opportunity to pick the category of their games themselves. That would help the games to be more easily found via the search button (which in turn would lead to more comments/rating) and generally tidy up things without any risk of someone gaming the system.

edit: and since we're here, do we really need the "mags" category? I think it only adds noise, let them be short/non-adventure

Engine Development / Bug: strange video behaviour on Win7
« on: 02 Sep 2013, 20:28 »
Hello.
Today I went to an internet café to play OROW games. The PC I was given was running W7 ultimate.
When I tried to run a game (i.e. educating adventures of girl and rabbit) this appeared on the screen

so, "transparent" window (even though I could hear music in the background. When I moved the window the graphics magically appeared, but the mouse was unresponsive.

No amount of fiddling with the setup got that to work.
No amount of admin privileges did it.
Other non AGS game ran just fine (e.g. HERO core by remar).
I randomly tried to find a working game in the OROW bundle: The butler ran without problem, other picks did not.

I am well aware this bug report isn't extremely detailed, but it wasn't my machine and I did not have time to fiddle with it.

Site & Forum Reports / duckduckgo and ags
« on: 20 Feb 2013, 08:48 »
So, let's search AGS Forum with DuckDuckGo.
As you can see the first result leads to a 404 page.

I wonder how they were able to crawl is since it's 404 :s Maybe there's some sitemap with wrong links somewhere on the site?
