Reality-on-the-Norm / The road to the 15th anniversary
« on: 16 Mar 2015, 19:01 »
Next year RoN will be celebrating it's 15th anniversary.  I'm mentioning this now so if anyone wants to do something special to celebrate this landmark (or RoN in general) has enough time before Feb 2016.

If anyone is unsure of what they could do, contributions could be any of the following:
- Artwork (digital or physical)
- Fiction or non fiction piece
- Music: for game use, or a live recording of the Ron theme (for example)
- A game
- Character/object/etc sprites
- Game backgrounds
- A birthday card
- Photos of a cake celebrating the 15th anniversary
- a audio and/or video piece
- Or something not listed above that marks this anniversary or celebrates RoN in general

I've re-zipped the version of The Chef (click here for link to games page) that's at the RoN site & uploaded it.  Hopefully you'll have some luck with that.

I've encountered a few false positives from Avast.  It once threw a .dll file straight into the quarantine vault when I opened an old game of mine with AGS 2.7 as I needed to check some lines for a port project I'm working on.

You may have to get Avast to either exempt the files you're trying to extract or turn it off briefly as it's clearly being pig-headed.

Ah the joys of Avast.  I use it too and there are times when I want to reprogram it with a very large axe when it starts getting fussy with AGS programs.

Anyway, you can find a rar copy of The Chef at this archive.  It's listed as #28.

The project looks very interesting.  I can see it being used to quickly generate & experiment with character concepts (the head at least).  Once it's done we'll work at getting it on the RoN site.

Will there be future updates for female heads?

Reality-on-the-Norm / Re: Old RON forum materials?

Unless someone manages to find an archive to drag screaming into the light, pretty much everything on the old RoN forums is gone.  The only things I've got from the old forums is the art from the old sprite & background comp/activities.

Did more digging, here's the earliest versions of the following that I have:

Disappearance Time: link

Cabbages & Kings: link

Dead Man's Political Party (v1): link
While you didn't ask for this, I've included it just in case you didn't know there was a version 1/had the version 1.

I Spy 2: link

The Postman Only Dies Once: link
Link on the website now works as well.

The First Stitch: link
Best I could find was the game files which I've recompiled using ags 2.7 as whatever version I originally used to make it was cast into the wind long ago.  This will have to suffice unless someone else can come forward with an original compile.

After having a look through the files on my machine, I've only been able to find RoN Beach Party, which I've added to the demos page on the RoN site for future download.  For now, here's a direct link.

I'm going to keep looking through my backups but they're on CD and so will take longer to go through but I'll be wearing by fedora while I do this because hey, why not? At least I'm assured no ancient traps from long dead civilizations :)

As an aside to anyone else watching this thread, I also came across Edmundo's beta version Ron Movie Maker program and put it on the RoN site in the fiction section if anyone wants to check it out.

Critics' Lounge / Re: RoN- kitten krysis style
« on: 24 Dec 2014, 05:21 »
The style that I was attempting to emulate was designed by Krysis (see the example of Mary the fox in the first picture).  I've made some adjustments, redid the colouring and I think I've got something that works given the height limit of 16 pixels (it a kitten after all).  I'm pretty happy with this and I think it's serviceable, or at least cute. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, they were most helpful.

Critics' Lounge / RoN- kitten krysis style
« on: 21 Dec 2014, 20:40 »
I've made an attempt at spriting up a kitten in Krysis' style (or as close to it as possible) and I'm not sure if I've accomplished that with any success.  Any suggestions on how and where things can be improved would be most appreciated.

In the worksheet below I've provided examples of the original kitten sprite, Mary the fox in Krysis' style (which is the style that's being emulated), and Drake just as a height comparison reference.

After hearing rumors of supernatural activity Jhon Steel, a paranormal investigator, has come to Reality to investigate.

This is a reconstruction of the original game "Paranormal Investigatino" created by Peter Tomov. The purpose of this reconstruction was to update the game to make it playable on more recent versions of Windows and to improve as many visual aspects of the game as possible.  Extra writing was also done to better explain the plot of the game.

The game can be found on this PAGE.
or just download directly from this LINK.

Monty on the Norm has received a reconstruction in AGS 3.3 to make it playable on modern machines.  This version features updated graphics and music.

The first post has been edited to reflect the same download links in this post and features a screenshot of the game.

Great stuff.  The narrative device of telling the story through journal entries was a nice way illustrating the thoughts of the respective characters.  Your story also holds the distinction of being the first piece of fiction in a very long while.

I'd like to get it on the site and make a formal announcement.

A classic RoN game by Dave Gilbert has been given a makeover and update to run on modern machines.

Game synopsis:
You play the role of Death, the Grim Reaper, who has come to Reality to reclaim the soul of Michael Gower. Who's that? Michael Gower is better known as the zombie who is currently running for mayor of Reality.

The game can be downloaded from: this link.

First off, nice updated sprites there Retro Wolf.

As to what I'm working on: I've got some ideas bubbling away on the back burner and I'm also a part of the Back to Reality project that DG mentioned.  I'm also working on getting my own old projects recompiled to the most recent version of AGS and this will include the various reconstructions I did back in 2007.

In fact, "The Repossessor" is done!  Go to the RoN site and download it now.  Your kidneys will thank you... probably :).

I've just sticky-ed this topic so the list of various social media that RoN is on doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

RoN also has a page on TV Tropes, which can be found here.

And a Wikia, which can be found here.

Reality-on-the-Norm / Re: Alternate Town Square

Cloudy Days is a real estate agency.

The background looks fine, a little disconcerting to see it reversed but that's a good effect for a "mirror" world.

There's a new version of Virtual Reality that can be found at this link.

Just a reminder, this is still a work in progress.

Reality-on-the-Norm / Re: Some RON questions
« on: 05 Sep 2014, 01:38 »
- There's been no formal appearance of RoN university in the games to date.  The closest it's come in-game is a small unlabelled pamphlet in "Stuck at Home".  The town & uni maps on the website (faq section) show a detailed plan of the university campus & buildings.

- The Davy Jones' Spell Book pdf covers the games from "Lunchtime of the Damned" to "Stuck at Home".  Any newer games that had Davy use new spells/rituals (and I don't think there were many that did, if any at all) wouldn't be in the version on the site.

- You're referring to Virtual Reality and it's still a thing.  I've uploaded a new version that you can get in the Virtual Reality post or at this link instead.

- So long as your game follows the few rules (don't kill established characters or reveal the Bum's identity) you can make a post in the forum announcing your game.
