I really, really, don't understand what you're trying to do, assasination.

You do realise there are about 5 other awards for AGS and independant games? The AGS awards, The Adventure Gamers Underground awards, The Crows Nest awards, DIY games awards and probably more.

You should think up something new and innovative. It could still be some kind of awards but why not just have 1 award, a special achievement award or something.

Seriously, think about it. I don't want to put you off because at least you're showing you want to contribute. But holding more awards is pretty much a crap idea.

However someone should really look into some kind of mid-year awards thing. Just something small. But it gives us something to look forward to in the summer. SCREEN 7 AWARDS AYNONES?!!!1111

well, I started with 1 award every month, and then changed to 1 every season... and now you want me to have it like, one time in the year??, well,, it would be great for me , since iam busy with making my own games, play in 2 bands, go on school and making websites like, www.segamastersystem.vze.com ill think about it :D..but anyway ill think ill have it like this to next year,, and then ill come up with something verry cool...

M0ds makes a very good point in that there is already a lot of good awards systems in place and any more would detract from those already in place.

It does bring me onto something I have been wondering about however. I have not been a member of the AGS community for very long so I have a good idea of the community from a newcomers perspective, and one thing that sticks out is how well represented and established it is. Games are produced by members on a regular basis and the great majority of them are to high standards and well worth downloading. There are review sites, ezines, awards systems - in fact pretty much everything that I can think of is already in place and taken care of very professionally.

My question then, is what can newcomers contribute that isn't already done superbly elsewhere? Is there anything left to add?

I was wondering what the opinion of long-time members of the community was on this, and if there are any suggestions on what, if anything, is sorely lacking in the community.

Here are a few things I think we're missing, and providing a new-comer didn't just rush into it but made a worthwhile job of it, I think they'd be more than welcome to try;

A decent resource site. Somewhere people can submit and download resources for AGS games, including artwork, music, useful code etc. It should have a form where you can simply upload something from your PC which then becomes part of a list on a page for others to download and use.

Walkthroughs. Someone or some people should create a site specifically dedicated to AGS game walkthroughs. There are loaaads of games out there with no walkthroughs and thats why the hints and tips forum gets so busy. If the site also contained handy hints and tips for the games that'd be cool too. But this would be a big project, but would be worth it. Even games that are only two screens long should have a walkthrough, imo.

Reviews. Someone could make a comprehensive review site. Tho on this site each game has a little thing about it and a rating, it'd be nice if a bunch of people wrote reviews for not only full games but also demos that are released for AGS games, imo.

We're sorted for awards, tho.

Just some ideas.

:)

then ill stop giving out awards next year,, and start with something else!!

Fair play SHH, wasn't really aware of those. But both could use a bundle more walkthroughs. They both need a dedicated team that can seek out lesser known AGS games and create walkthroughs for them.

Actually, I'd like to see a huge resource site too.

You could divide each section into "backgrounds", "characters" (including walkcycles and other actions), "music", "plug-ins", "instagame modules", etc, etc.

People could upload their resources and a moderator/site manager could approve them.

Or you could have a voting system where people rate each resource -- and resources below a certain score get deleted.

Yep. There are schools of people within the community that just seem to mope about, who aren't working on any games, (And by mope I don't mean you're lazy bastards!) who could quite easily help moderate or run such a site. You could even do it so when a moderator/reviewer/writer/whatever feels they want to pass it on to someone else, they can. That way everyone can get involved.

I'm surprised no one has implemented such a thing yet.

I think this might be the next important step in AGS -- to centralise the resources.

This is something I would jump at the chance to help moderate or run in someway. I don't think I have the required skills to implement it (being a little lacking in website design ability and so on).

If there was such a thing in place though, I agree that it would a very useful thing to have, and I'm sure that would be a lot of people more than happy to contribute.

Well... for that we already have http://www.sylpher.com/a/

But I totally agree with you about the resource site. I thought about that too earlier, but I don't have the php skills to make it work. And ofcourse time :p hehe

Well, as we're heading to a new AGS web design, why not make it all in the roots?

Good thinking Czar!

I once tried to put a resources section in the AGDzine, but it all screwed up and didn't work. So yes, it needs to be done.

DGMacphee

The question is: Who's going to store it? Chris or someone else?

If someone was prepared to set all this up, I'd be happy to give them hosting on the AGS website. Unfortunately it's not something I can volunteer to do myself, I really just don't have the time at the moment.
