Now Leo speaks english (more or less...).
Leonard Ketmaier, a medieval history professor, is asked by the S. MicheleÃ,  abbot to investigate about a mysterious suicide
committed by a monk of the abbey...
That's the first part of the game.

Yay, I've been really waiting for this! Thank you again for translating the game. I'm downloading it now, it should take a while since I'm on dial-up. Ah well.

Hi, Ketmaier!

Thanks a lot for the English version! Wow, 19,2 MB! It seems it's a very good game! But today I won't be able to play it, just download it: alotta work to do. And my optical mouse seems being crazy since yesterday: I will not buy a "Microsoft" one again... sigh...
Hope I can play it soon, maybe tomorrow!

This game is pretty fun, and the graphics are very respectable.Ã,  I was having a fun time hunting down the mystery, but now I am stuck.Ã,  Can someone who has finished the game help me over on the hints forum?Ã,  ;D

One other thing, I can't get the save game screen to work.Ã,  I pick a slot and type in the name in the red rectangle area.Ã,  I tried hitting the save button to the right, as well as return and a bunch of other keys but no luck.Ã,  To make matters worse, hitting the play button on that screen restarts the game, including the long intro that can't be skipped.Ã,  :PÃ,  Any way to save games that I'm not seeing?

Barbarian

Lakerz, by default it looks like AGS has when you press the "f5" key that it will bring up the Save dialog.
That is unless the author of a game changed or removed that option.
I've not played "The Devil's Shroud" yet, but it sound like they might have tried making thier own "Save" function GUI which doesn't quite work the way it's suppsed to?  Anyways, try the "f5" key.
And also, usually "f7" brings up the "Restore" a game option, and "f9" usually restarts the game.

Well that's aweful then.  If the program wasn't the cause, then it could have been a webpage you had opened that forced the toobar/virus on you?
Were you able to get rid of the spyware and virus?  Of course the first thing to do before running any newly downloaded file is to scan it for virus.  I hope you can get your computer clean of the spyware & virus.
Here's a free online virus scan:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

And to get rid of Spyware, I suggest using Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/

You can get a good free anti-virus program over at:

Hi, everybody!

Inkoddi, avoid  the use of a freeware antivirus.

Barbarian, whenever I 've used a free antivirus my computer has become a virus paradise. I've also used eg mcafee late 80s and during 90s, Panda, Quick Heal, NAV, etc. Now I use Bitdefender pro 7.2, for me the best one. It has a firewall too, and daily updates.

About spyware, I also use spybot 1.4, but as it is freeware, their updates and upgrades are alotta longer than the adaware ones: almost everytime I check for updates (I hate automatic ones, I always prefer to know what's contacting my pc) I get a new update or upgrade.

Sigh... I couldn't play this game yet due to lack of time and too much work. Hope I can play it today yet.

Oh well, everyone's entitled to thier opinion  ;)
I found AVG anti-virus works a lot better on my system than Nortons and Mcafee. Anyways, everyone needs to decides what works best for them I guess. I was just trying to offer some friendly advice.

Ok, Barbarian, I didn't want to upset you, please understand. Sorry if you thought it was a negative criticism: nah!!!, just a very frendly opinionÃ,  Ã, :D based on my own experience (the name I give to my mistakes...Ã,  ::) )

Is AVG Kasperski's one? I've read it's one of the best, too. But I couldn't ever made it work without... er... buying it ...Ã,  ;)

First of all my compliments: It wasn't easy to locate the crypt so early (just 3 days!). Unfortunately I don't know what to say about the electric torch: it's not a red herring; you can get it since you use the pc to print the sanctuary's picture. It means that you can also get it when you've activated the device to open the crypt's door. I thought it was a bug but I've tried to take the torch in different moments and everything works correctly. Please let me know if you've been able to keep on with the game.

Yes the sanctuary is the room with two torches and one missing but you don't have to take a picture from that room but from the sanctuary's illustration (that is inside the abbot's secret book). Good luck.

The only thing you have to do if you want to finish the first part is to think as you were Leonard. It means that when you try to get an object he can't say I don't need it now, because he doesn't know if that object will be useful or not in the future. In the same way when Leonard finds out new clues, a previously unnecessary object can turn into something useful and so he will get it. Now, if you consider the matter from his point of view you should be able to understand why he gets an object and how he can use it.

Yvonne

Well, but Ketmaier KNOWS that it's "too dark to enter". and he knows that there is a torch in his bedroom.
And yet, like a complete imbecile he goes on saiyng that he does not need the torch (neither the lighter, nor the branch - with a towel/bandage + oil + lighter he could make and light up a torch).

Ketmaier

Yes you're right and I have to apologize because Leonard should'nt say It's too dark to enter: that's a BUG!!! related to the walkable area. I'm sorry...just don't consider it.

Nostradamus

Well well... the graphics are awesome and story is interesting... but it's not very user friendly.. I try to grab something and he says "I can't reach it from here" that's the most annoying sentence in adventure games ever. So I'm in th elinving room trying to take the camera but he can't reach it so I try walking towards it... no luck... he doesn't want to pass the couches no matter where I go and where I walk down the screen the character freezes at the bottom and doesn't move anymore..

Dear Kitmaier:

Hi! And congratulations for fine game that has got stuck everyone I know - yeah, I've tried a few friends, but they're as myself (using the expression I read before in a thread) - stuck glued. You can confirm that here:
http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=14679.0

You're right, theÃ,  player must think as Ketmaier. The player must "dress" his character. Ok. But what about the off / narrator / etc., telling things Ketmaier doesn't / didn't / shall not / shouldn't know, but a third part - eg a player - should...
Pls! Without that kind of tips, your game is too hard... (that's at least my opinion).

Oh, a hint: if you want to place hidden hints / tips / etc.

Bravo Primus!  I agree!  After a while you get so sick of being stuck in a game that you just want to delete it and be done.  Maybe time to move onto something else where you can get decent tips!

Hi, Tvcooper2001:
I've felt that before, but fortunately I didn't delete too many games due to that: sooner or later, I could go on. I must confess I have a few games half done... half notÃ,  :-[

This one in special, I like it, its "ambiance", the so much effort and work showed by Ketmaier to made a so quality game and all  extra ones giving us an English version, and so on. I'd feel like as a "trahitor" just giving up... And old andventure gamers as me like challenges. But in this case I must confess I give up: please, Ketmaier, our ten o'clock watches need to go on, they need a DIRECT tip, prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrease.... :P

ketmaier,
is there an internal clock in this game? i've matched up the pics and re-examined the body and finally got the message,
"i guess it's time to report my findings to the abbot"
i keep wandering around the abbey but i can't find him, and his door is always locked. someone told me that if i go up to where the mad monk is and come back down, the abbot will appear, but he doesn't
hint greatfully appreciated

Primus

#33
Hi, Porchbeast!

No, don't go to where the mad monkey is, but go out from the abbey by that walk where you can also visit the old ruins, then go back, or then go to the fountain: you'll see the abbot drinking water. Wait till he gets out that screen and so comes back to his room: at that point you can visit him. If you don't see him, try again by going to the upper screen, then going back.

How did you do that, pls?! What did you do? Please...

I clicked on the couch pillow like you said and he did say here is my credit card.  But, the card does not show un in my inventory???  Does it in yours?

Perhaps you are supposed to switch chalaces in Abbot's office and that is what makes he sleep?

After Ketmaier has said that there are enough clues and he has to talk to the Abbot - this happens after he has matched the pictures, and after he has re-examined the body commenting that there is too little blood -Ã,  there follows a long conversation with the Abbot who tells Ketm. the story of the monk Eldo.
Ketm. tries to talk to Eldo - no success.
Ketm. talks to the monk who stands next to the cell with the corpse, and learns that Eldo has not had his tranquilizers that day.
So, he goes back home and takes the medicine from the bathroom.
But, Eldo doesn't want to drink - "not thirsty".  Ketm has to make him thirsty...

In order to have "enough clues" and talk to the Abbot:
1) Match the photo of the blood stain on the wall (the numbers six and nine entwined) with the picture from your own book on satanism;
2) Re-examine the corpse - more precisely the blood on the floor - in order to conclude that the monk had been killed elsewhere and his body brought to the cell.
Now go and talk to the Abbot to learn about Father Eldo.

Ketmaier,
Congratulations on a great game!
Can't wait to go on in Lyon.
The "Abbey By Night" scenes are breathtaking - the starry sky and the moon, not to forget the soundtrack. Very good puzzles, dramatis personae with individuality, a feeling for the detail - just to name one - how the clock started working again...
You should definitely think about the movie art & industry.

Ketmaier

Congratulations to you Yvonne. You've been very fast to complete the first part. We're glad you appreciated it and we're sure the you'll going to like the coming part even more.

The Book

Great game... one question only - why did you decide to make a game about such a dark subject?

Batgirl1979

Great Game!! Only got stuck twice. It took me awhile to find the crypt entrance and then the alter entrance I kept trying to open the gate when it already was and all I had to do was walk through it! lol. Oh and the part in the abbey with the chalice was a bit buggy but I made it through. I like the idea of not being able to pick up items until leo knows that he needs them. That way you aren't hording a bunch of stuff (that can sometimes get confusing). Though you can get ahead of the character in your thinking but the game goes much smoother this way.
Also enjoyed the computer bits, very original.
Can't wait for part two, any ideas on when it will be released??

Cheers B.

Hi!

A rar file is compressed by winrar, as a zip file is compressed with winzip, and as an arj file is compressed with winarj. Pls get winace or winrar (the one I prefer is the winrar v 3.1) to get the game files.

Yes the sanctuary is the room with two torches and one missing but you don't have to take a picture from that room but from the sanctuary's illustration (that is inside the abbot's secret book). Good luck.

Primus,
In your post you say to 'adquire image (use camera) with computer, then 'adquire book image' and match both images.

Well I managed to magnify the image from the camera but then I cannot do anything with the book I got from the living room on Satan.

What am I missing.  Is that the book you are talking about or is there another book.  ???  I just seem to be going around in circles from home to abbey without being able to do anything.

I see the abbot drinking all the time but cannot get the chalice either from fountain or from abbot room.

I cannot get anything out of the monk walking around in circles.

So far I did not get anything except the picture of blood from abbey :(

Can anyone help me.  I would like to go on with the game.

I have read the 'hints' and the posts from 'completed games' but I can't find anything.

HELP. :'(

Where are all the players.

This seems likeÃ,  a very good game and so many members were playing it but yet no one has posted in a long time :-\

I can't believe that there is not at least 1 member that could answer my post >:(

Thanks to anyone that could possibly help me. ;)

OK - PROBLEMS SOLVED - GAME COMPLETED.

Thank you Miryoku_81 and Cittymom

Also "the devil's shroud - part2" is coming soon in 256 colours.

This is a really cool game but I'm having a problem.
I can't enter the building at the back. How do you do that?

Potch

I ALSO cannot enter the building at the back.   Any help would be appreciated.

this game is interesting.  I don't know why I never saw it before now....

I remember playing this but sorry I don't remember a lot about it, maybe once hints forum is up again you will get further, I know there was a bunch of us playing at the same time and we were stuck so there is a thread there with quite a few questions and answers. I don't even know what building at the back you guys are referring to. Big help I am eh!

Potch

Well, what I was referring to was... when  you go to the church place, and you investigate the room where the guy was killed, you leave through the back.  I went back to the apartment to get something, came back, and now I can't get back in.  If I go to the front door, it says I have to go around the back.  I go around the back, to a screen where you walk through an archway, and I can't go any further.

That is so strange. When you mentioned archway I remembed. I was able to just walk through it. Wasn't there somebody you talked to who said they would open gate for you or something like that for when you returned later.

Joyce

Did you guys just download this recently, from the link that Ketamier gave.  Maybe theres a bug in that one. I d/l it from gamesolves a while back, I don't know if the one that is on the link that Ketamier gave is a new version or not, if it is new then could be a bug maybe?

Gijs

Yeah it's happening in the new version(the one with 10,9MB).
If it's a bug I hope it will be solved soon cause I really wanna play this game.

Potch

Well, I sent a pm to Ketamier, so hopefully this will be resolved soon.  I'll let you know if I hear anything back.  :)

Its still on gamesolves, well thats if its still the older one and not the newer version. I guess you would know by the size. If you don't hear from Ketamier you could always try that one. Also on that site is a walkthrough (NL) which means it is in dutch, I just d/l it and used a translater to put it in english, its not the greatest translation but it does give you a rough idea. I saved it so let me know if you want it.

Gijs

I'll have a look thanks :)

Wow I was typing the same time as you.
I also have found that link, but are you suposed to get on that white screen when you click the d/l link?

Edit: I got the d/l link working.

Edit2: This version works. :D

Potch

Potch

OK... well, that part works now... but I'm having ANOTHER problem...

Spoiler
Any idea how to get the picture off of the gigital camera?  I looked at the book from the shelf, and it said the picture didn't match anything, so I'm assuming I have to get the picture off the camera and do something to it with the computer at the apartment, but when i go into it, I can't do anything.

Sorry Potch its been a while from I have played and I don't remember much but don't forget there is a walkthrough where you d/l the game but its in dutch. You can translate it using this site. First go to the NL walkthrough, copy and paste the address, then go to babelfish and paste it into where it says translate a webpage and where it says language put dutch to english. Its not the greatest translation but it might give you an idea. Have you read all this thread too I thought I saw something about digital camera in here.
Yes there are quite a few games on that site and that was just the games beginning with "T" that I give you, there is an alphabetical list at the bottom but I guess you saw that.

As many people have pointed there was a bug in the game due to the conversion from hi-colour to 256. I've fixed it and tested the game and it works correctly. At least there aren't bugs that stuck you. Sorry for those who dowloaded TDS and I hope you'll be so kind to download it again.

I have posted on the "Hints and Tips" section but no one has been able to help me. I'm still trying to find the abbot but the door is locked. I have read that he is at a fountain but where is it???? Is it on the screen where the monk is guarding the room. Because all I see is a christening font. And I think I'm supposed to get a chalice but I can't find it either.  Can someone please help? I have been stuck on the same spot for a week and the walkthrough doesn't help. So where is the abbot and how can I get him to appear?????
