Yeah, some normalization, equalization, compression, etc would really improve the sound. Though this game already kicks ass enough as it is

Another cool way to avoid hissing is to hold a sheet of paper in front of your mouth and the mic. You'll need to amplify the recorded sound later with an editor (like cooledit or goldwave) because the recorded piece won't sound that loud. (You can also increase the recording volume)

The paper avoids you 'blowing' into the mic, which causes annoying hisses and cracks.
