Do I need to register my game to get nominee at the next AGS Awards?

Ok, so this is a very old thread. But I've been trying to play this game, found a way to make it work (which it didn't, at least not for me), and would like to share.

If you're having severe trouble playing this game (i.e., can't even see the screen before an error message pops up), here's what you have to do:

Rename "dgsfb.exe" to "ac2game.ags";
Download this 2.52 version of AGS: http://aafiles.bicycle-for-slugs.org/ags/ags_252.zip
Extract ONLY the "acwin.exe" file to the game's directory (i.e., where newly-renamed "ac2game.ags" can be found);
Make a shortcut of "acwin.exe", open the shortcut's "Properties" tab, and on "Shortcut", in the first field, where it would say something like ["C:\Games\QFBatteries\acwin.exe"] add "--setup" AFTER the inverted commas, like so: ["C:\Games\QFBatteries\acwin.exe" --setup];
Rename the shortcut to WinSetup;
And run "acwin.exe" to play the game.

Wouldn't work with previous executable engines, INCLUDING 2.50, the one the game was apparently made in, or with the latest, so I hunted around and 2.52 seemed to fit the bill. It's an old game, probably not many people remember it, but if this helps someone, I'll be all warm and tingly inside.

Hi Rui

I never have problem running Another DG game or I'll never release it to the public. I use Win98.

Do you use XP?

Robin Gravel

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

I got the following message:

---------------------------
Illegal exception
---------------------------
An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x004A2AEC; program pointer is -91, ACI version 2.50.390, gtags (0,0)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.

OK

Using WinXP Pro, probably SP2. Still, it's no biggie - if anyone else has this problem, they now know what to do. :)

I see

XP released in 2004. Not only XP cannot run DOS games, it cannot  run AGS games old versions as well. That's why I'll never upgrade my computer to XP.

Anyway. I am too busy to upgrade DG to the newest version.

Thanks for the tip. It's usefull

Robin Gravel

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Oh, it can run old AGS games, ayuh. Even games much older than your own. The problem is very odd, but work-aroundable.

BTW, XP can run DOS games if you use DOS emulators, such as DOSBox or VDMSound.

The oldest game I own is Epyx the Rogue.

I agree 100% with you. Dos Box is an excellent DOS emulator.

Since you can run DG on your computer.

What do you think about my game?

It's a nice way to kill a couple of minutes. There isn't much more I can say. It's a light game, lacking in substance, graphically decent, very straightforward and easy. I liked the look of the AGI room. All in all, an average "decent first AGS game". I'm surprised you didn't keep making games, you could have gone up from this.

You must understand that DG is my first ags. Don't expect a serious game in first try.

I tell the true: there is something lacking in AGS: there is no view editor unlike AGI studio or SCI studio. I mean, you cannot draw views directly in AGS. You need a paint progam to make pictures and put them in AGS.

To make a view with 14 frames in AGS, you need 14 pictures from a paint program. AGI and SCI.

Naming many pictures make me crazy.

AGS is a great engine for making adventure games.

How many AGS games are released so far?

I'm not going to tell I stopped making AGS games but don't expect too much from me.

Robin Gravel

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Oh, I understood it was a first AGS game quite quickly. Don't take my "average" the wrong way - it was not memorable, which is normal for a first game, and it wasn't bad, and so many first games are nothing if not bad. In fact, your game was polished and finished and cohese. Again, so many first games are anything but that. And it was the degree of "completeness", as it were, that would have made me think "Here's a guy that'll surprise us in the near future"... were it not that 4 years have passed without another game.

And less on-topic, but still on pleasant topic: you can't draw in AGS directly, true, but neither do you need to make a picture for a frame. You can have 100 frames in a big BMP file if you wish. Look further into AGS' capabilities. Also, it's true that AGI and SCI have those things built-in, but there is a limit to what those interpreters can do graphically. In AGS, you can use all the power of a Photoshop program, or a 3D renderer, or scanned hand-drawn images, or whatever.

I count 717 full games, short games and medium games released with AGS, plus 28 non-adventure games, 73 RON games and 58 MM games, though this counting isn't probably all that accurate. Still, those are nice numbers. And I, for one, would really like to see you adding to them. Like I said - polished first games are rare. You made one, and didn't keep going. Our loss, really.
