"Dark Jerry" sprite

Hi there!

After a few attempts to make a group of pixels look like a person, my hads came out with this:

What do you think ?
He wants to be some kind of dark/heavy metal/rebellious boy...
I think he looks kinda.....you know....fat - don't know how to fix it, though.

He looks fat because of the shade that's in the belly. Modify the shading in the belly and the belly outline, because it look too round. That's making him look fat too. Except from that you have a very cool sprite.

I had a quick go at moving some sprites around - didn't expect it to look so different, but this is what I came up with.



I kinda got carried away - my main aim was to take away the shadow on his shirt.

->SergioCornaga - I know he looks like Trilby. Just can't get rid of that feeling. I'll try to make him different at the end. This is my second sprite, you know....

I think now it's a bit better.



However, he still looks kinda "pixelly"

I thought if he was a rebelling teen, then maybe he'd be wearing a band t-shirt, I had a go at putting a flaming skull on his.



oops I just realised I used the fatter image of him for my version, but you get what I'm talking about.

Yes, I know what you mean. I tried to do somethinglike that before, but I didn't like it. I want him to be so "daaaaarkkk, hatefuuul and cruuuel".....So... More black is better

Yes, yay for black. He looks much better now that he has less of a belly. The only thing about him that reminds me of Trilby are his legs and feet, its fairly similar in style.

     I really like the paintover that Ben did, with the sprite kinda turned slightly. Also the flaming t-shirt is a nice touch. I would try to incorporate some of those ideas in to the next/final version of the spirte.

I like the long coat.
I feel he should be looking down.  Rebels and loners don't make eye contact, so to make him more moody he should be looking away.

Stupot got it right -> I want him to look down. Not down to the ground, but to look straight "through his eyebrow" with head turned into the ground. I hope you understand what I mean. But I think I can't make this. We're overcoming my skills, or this low resolution possiblities.

Anyways, I used some of the ideas as thewalrus said:



-moved his eyes down one pixel and corrected the face/neck in proportion to that

-added eyebrow
-added the skull

Mr. Buckéthead - good idea with the jacket, I like it. But it'll be hard (for me) to animate it ( remember ? my second sprite). Anyway, when I'm donw with this sprite (also with walkcycle), I'll add this to his friend/whoever else in the game.

Ok, I came out with another version, please let me know what you think of it:



The only trouble I'm encoutering here is the eyebrow.
He looks coll when he has one, but I don't know if i made it allright.
I also drawed two versions - looking away and looking towards you.

So what ?
Is it any better ?

The eyebrow is fine (but what is wrong with fat people :'().

The only thing that looks weird in that version is that he looks like he's going bald, if you see what i mean.

I know what you mean with the bald head.

     Yeah, looks cool. But I think the thingy on his shirt either looks like a ghost from the original pac-man game or a jelly fish; I can't really decide which.

I think he should wear something else then a sweather. It just doesn't fit.

naw. i think its good. metal rebels would look like that. the whole matrix goth look isnt the metal look. you see a million of these kids on tv walking around thinking "no one gets me" and they dress just like that. the same shirt and jeans every single day (must be good stitching on them). I honestly think he nailed the sprite

There's still something wrong with it... maybe not the sweather but I dunno what else.

I know that the skull isn't so good. I tried to fix it, however, I don't know if this is better:



->Mr. Buckéthead-> I don't know what doesn't fit him. It is meant to be some kind of jacket. I have some of these in my wardrobeÃ, 

->Da_Elf-> It's not exactly the way you said. I also like the metal music very much. I have some of that black T-shirts and jackets in my wardrobe. But I change themÃ,  . Also not all ( but almost all ) metalists are like you said: so cruuuel, black and hatefuuul. However, the fun comes here: you don't need this. I listen to that music, I dress in black ( however, not ONLY black) and I haven't got a long hair. So -> you don't need all this image s*** to be one of them. I only want to tell you that not all of them are like you said. I think these are the "true" ones. The others only want to be dark. That's all.

Okay here's what I did. I changed the thing on the shirt, and I added a little more hair on him too. For better? For Worse? Who knows. That's my take on it.

I like the spirte, it's come a long way.

I think it's best you decide which one you're most comfortable with, since they're all equally good in my opinion.

But anyway, enough of my whinging, and back on to the topic....

I had another go at editing the sprite (this time a bit less drastically) to see if I could give you an idea or two...



I mainly focused on the logo, the shoes and the head. Yay for metal dudes.

Yes, the black stuff is intended to be hair. I, too, got the impression that it could be mistaken for a hood, so it's not as good as I would have liked it, but I couldn't think of any way to do it better.

Exactly.
I don't want him to be some kind of extreme goth with chains hangig from his body or whatever. I want him to look like....you know....like me. Not exactly, but the main idea came from that.

The repaint is good, but I think i'll keep the head ( the one that is partially covered with hair ). The logo is great, I'll use this one.
The only thing I want to look another way are the shoes. I'm not sure, but it may be better to make him wear some high boots. I tried it, but it never looked like boots, so I gave up

They're cool, but I think they look like having the feet in some kind of huge socks. I am becoming convinced that it's almost impossible to draw a decent boots in this resolution...

Hmm, maybe if there was like a band logo like Iron Maiden or something, that might make him look like one of the rebellious bunch of goths.

Yess, I just awaited this reaction to come.
The rule is:

You DON'T need to dress black, use some black lipstick and make-up, hang chains on you and speak like devil himself. It's just an image thing, people playing on heavy metal ultra dark goths.

People listening to this music not because of the image of the band, but just ONLY 'cause the music are the true metallists. It's just a difference between so called "goths" (who just like the image, and the music comes along with it ) and the real ones ( who listen it because they like it ).

And definetly ( hell, I can't learn how to write this word ), IronMaiden is FAR away from gothic music. Really far. And I don't want my sprite to be this goth. Just a regular teen listening to metal.

Man, this is just becoming offtopic.

Maybe you could take a look at the Indy games for some reference on decent boots in this resolution. The Nazi soldiers are wearing quite a lot of them. I had a look at some screenies and whipped this up in about 20 seconds. Just to give you some ideas:

Venus -> good job. I am not big fan of Indy games, so I didn't know the how-to. I hope this looks good:



Vintage -> I don't know about the hair. I am still not decided wheter to use them or not. Without them, you see the face clearly, but It looks that he is partially bald at the left ( his right ) side of the head. With the hair, he looks more natural haired, but he gets some kind of weird countenance in the face.

What do you say ?
What's better ? With hair or without ?
And boots ? What looks better ? With them or without ?

I like both the boots and the long hair. A couple of extra pixels could help making him look less bald. Maybe something like this:

I know this is going to sound incredibly prejudiced, but maybe a mohawk? This would clear up any doubts about the hair, and also it would fit with the costume he is wearing.

A mohawk wouldn't be very metal at all. Would instantly make the character look like a punk.

I love the sprite by the way. Have you thought about giving him a leather jacket instead? I think that might look good too. Like a biker one, not some long goth thing.
