Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
« on: 19 Jul 2008, 14:26 »
I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been posted here, so I decided to do it myself...

It's an Internet musical written by Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly), Zack Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. If you haven't seen it yet, you still have some time until the free viewing ends midnight Sunday July 20th.

Go watch it now! It's great!

Such greatness and brilliance ... and yet Firefly was canceled.  Short-sighted, money-grubbing, capitalist pigs over at fox!

Anyway ... this is/was great as well!  Joss is so brilliant and totally underrated in his time.  I still listen to my mp3s of the Buffy Musical (from all those years ago) and have been known to spontaneously break into the theme song from Firefly or the Ballad of Jayne.

I didn't see a link in your post.  I could be utterly blind since no one has mentioned it yet:

Man, I love this! It made me laugh out loud a number of times. Brilliant idea and perfect execution. Kudos to Whedon.

Yes, it's absolutely brilliant. To be honest, I didn't expect anything less from Joss Whedon, I love anything from Firefly to Buffy Comics. I want Joss Whedon to write adventure games!

By the way, german TV shows Serenity tonight (for the first time I think, Firefly hasn't even aired once over here).

I just watched this.  I'm not really a massive Joss Whedon fan but this was pretty funny.

Ahahahaha

Nathan Fillion does not get enough recognition, the man is a comedic genius. If he and Paul Rudd were in every movie, we would live in a much happier society.

I watched all that last night after being linked in the news section of Penny Arcade. Man Joss Whedon rules, and everyone else involved. I'll buy this when it's DVDerized. I think Fillion got some of the best laughs.

What was the point in the moist guy though?... he added absolutely nothing whatsoever to the plot.

Thanks for the link, its fantastic. I really need to finish Firefly at some point. The moist guy provides a way to get an insight into what Dr Horrible is thinking, proof that he's not a complete loner and some comedic moments :)

Yeah, and it's absolutely hilarious to see him trying to open a glass jar.

YES!!  You definitely do!  It's my favorite show of all time.  I'm actually working on a Firefly fansite ... but it's nothing to do with Dr. Horrible so when I finish it I'll make a topic for it on its own :)

I thought Moist was sooo Joss' style ... throw in something that serves no necessary point, just adds richness and fullness to the plot.  Sure he's a got a PHD in horribleness ... but he's also got friends and life outside of being horrible!  I thought it was hilarious!

I said something similar to a friend of mine and his response was "What? You didn't watch it all in one go?". Relax Darth, I'll go watch the rest the next time I have some shirts to iron or something ;D I'm also waiting for the AGS fan game...

On another more topic based note, what was the ending about? My interpretation was
He got one of the things he always wanted but lost the other in the process. He pretends to be really happy with his new status but in the final shot we see he'd rather have her back
but then my brother suggested
that the final webcam shot of him in normal clothes meant it was all in his head or something
I reckon I'm right ;), but how did you guys see it?

(And yeah, got to love the twisting the jar lid and dropping the money bags jokes from Moist)

I don't think it was all in the head.  He really was evil, otherwise he would have got the girl.  He didn't get the girl because it would have been against the very TV/movie/webisode code which dictates that the bad guy always loses.  Although he was our 'protagonist', he was still very much a bad guy.   Captain hammer was our 'antagonist' but at least he wasn't building death-rays and such... he was still a douchebag though and deserved his own kind of cumuppance.   So neither guy deserved the girl - and the best way to rub salt into the wounds of both men was to kill her off.

To me that little flash at the end was just a reminder of his normal, laundry-guy side.

My interpretation is that Joss Whedon has always thought it would be hilarious to make something where, in the end, the hero's life turns to absolute shit, and the ending is the exact opposite of what the viewers want. Now that he doesn't have any producers to please, he's free to go about doing it.

Hell, it's what I'd do.
