Help With a Name For my Game
« on: 27 Apr 2009, 00:58 »
I know it might sound stupid but I have been thinking for ages for a name for my adventure game and me nor anyone in the team can come up with something we all agree on. Now that it's going into production we could really do with a solid name.

I wondered if you guys could help maybe? Perhaps suggest something, I could fit nearly anything in loosely with the game if it sounds good enough lol.

The game is set in a fantasy world with hints of satire and some comedy. The main character Malakey is reluctantly pushed into the role of setting out on a crusade to become a hero so that he can prevent the corruption of the land. Sounds a bit cliche but I'd be giving the story away if I went into more detail now lol.

We're looking for a two word name preferably but it can be more or less. The only name we've liked so far is "The Night The Stars Fell" but it's to long and doesn't really have a ring to it. Other suggestions included "10% Hero" far to comedic, "Little Hero" to childish, "The Gate" doesn't feel like a fantasy name and "Astrum" doesn't really have a ring to it. We need something a little more epic lol.

Names like Golden Sun are the kind of thing we'd be looking for.

Thanks for your time I hope you can maybe help us or advise us in some way :D

lol thanks but it doesn't really stand out. I don't really want to use hero in the title as it's misleading to what the game is about I think. appreciate the input though

The only name we've liked so far is "The Night The Stars Fell" but it's to long and doesn't really have a ring to it.

How about shortening it to StarFall? or something, (or a Sub title) StarFall : Malakey's Crusade

I kinda like that, even if I do say so myself.. :)

Yeah, I also though "Starfall" even before Revan posted. However, as much as I like that title (reminds me of Gaiman's "Stardust"), it perhaps suggests sci-fi more than fantasy - the Infocom game "Planetfall" comes to mind. A variation could be "Fallen Stars" - that could even be turned into something metaphoric if the story lends itself to it.

A bit of middle of the night brain-storming:

The Golden Hero?

Astrum Gate

The Reluctant Crusader

The Key is Malakey

Mr Malakey, get us rid of this Malady

A-strum

StarFall

Yeah I like the suggestions, thanks guys but I also feel starfall is to sci-fi and sounds slightly generic also. It's hard to think of original ideas lol.

Ascovel I thought of Astrum Gate also, but astrum is greek for star so it would be star gate lol which obviously wouldn't fit and is already in use.

We didn't really want to use star's to much as it sounds to sci-fi

How about just "Malakey"? It's unique enough a name that it stands out and is suitably easy to remember. The only drawback of that is that it does sound very similar to Malarkey (Which means 'nonsense', if you didn't know already). Then again, you're just as likely getting people drawing that parallel whether it's the title or not, so I think it works fine. If you can foresee some sequels in the future, Malakey: Starfall or something like that.

Starfall may be good, but personally it reminds me not of sci-fi but of Stardust book/movie, and it seems kinda similar in the basic plot (well it's a basic fantasy plot with becoming a hero and such but if you add star and fall into the title it kinda connects, don't you think?), but in the end it could be just me. Well I guess the name would fit if there are actually stars that have fallen and the sky is all black all the time so people live with only fire and candles and magic to light up the streets...that might actually be a cool story...o, how I drift off easily.  :P

As you said, when you describe the story/plot as you did, it sounds cliche but maybe you can tell us what it is that makes your story special or different (type of monster that appears, some item that the hero seeks, what kind of a guy is the main hero...anything that separates this from other fantasy quests), then the title would be easier to think of.
Think about it - Stardust, Hobbit, Discworld, anything with dragons, Northern lights, Conan the barbarian, The gunslinger (Dark tower), Goblet of fire or, if you go into those cliche but not cliche, like King's quest, Forgotten realms, The longest journey etc.

And so as not be like I didn't offer any concrete name: Midnight stars, Darkest realm, Hero of our days, Malakey's greatest adventure...it's kinda a guessing game of apstract ideas since there's not much to go on, yet.

P.S. "Crusade" is usually connected to Christianity so maybe avoid that word in a fantasy game, or at least in the title, so as not to give of the wrong vibe.

Heaven's Gate

This would be extra cool if your character Malakey is a bit retarded and decides to sacrifice kill himself at the end.

I like the ring to that. Not that I'm biased or anything

Why not? I think that the game should start from the twentieth episode at least and then work it's way around =D and you should also sell action figures packed with the game plus the game should only support win 3.1 and dos so anyone can play it! And have anoying nag screens and multiple loading times before you get to the main menu. And also only one save slot! Can't make a game without that! =D And some unnerving midi music that you can't turn off, to complete the feeling. There it is: my secret recipee for making great games!
