A Game By Its Cover - TIGSource competition
« on: 02 Jul 2010, 17:11 »
Thought some of the people on this board would like to join in on the new TIGSource competition:

Basically, you choose any fake box art from anywhere such as:

Famicase 2008
Famicase 2009
Famicase 2010

http://fx.worth1000.com/contests/11213/beta-busts-5
http://mightygodking.com/index.php/2008/04/21/fun-from-yesterday/?

or anywhere else, and create a game inspired by that case art.  The famicase stuff is especially cool with lots of inspiration to be had.

I definitely think AGS folk could make a bit of a showing in the competition.  Back Door Man, I believe, tied for second (?) in the last TIGS compo, so maybe somebody can have similar luck.  Regardless, it's a good excuse to just hunker down and finish something!

The competition runs through July 31!  All information here.  A ton of people have started posting about their entries here.

I've started my own small hour-a-day project for the game to blow off a little pent up creative steam.  Thread is here.  Hope to see some AGSers join in!  Show off our beloved engine a bit!

Also, you could totally wait to start until the OROW and do a game for both compos at once!

The contest sound great, but unfortunately it's impossible for me to join. I'm finishing Snakes until mid/late July and then I'm going for holidays.

Haha. Oh my, even if I most likely won't participate here, I'd like to express my sincere thanks to you, Vince, for leading me to this image:

I'm sure I'd finish that game much quicker than that godforsaken book, it's been gathering dust on my shelf for years. I mean, I feel like I'm too old for readin Hesse now anyway...Lost all of the rebellious spirit of youth and even got a day job (TM) by now! Anyway, anyone up for a pretentious game? I'll gladly provide unnecessarily complex story outline and overbearing dialogue.
I, object.

This is a cool idea.

I'm working on an entry too, but like a good-for-nothing turncoat I decided to use DAGE to make a 3D adventure.

My entry will be called "I was a Las Vegas Showgirl" (which is not biographically accurate). Here are some of the characters:

If you're interested, there's more information on the Tigsource Forum Thread .

Those look gorgeous; they'll really put Dage on the map.

And this contest sounds great, just like all the TIGsource ones do.

I wanted to enter this but I have other things going on that must take precedence.  I do look forward to seeing the entries, though.

Those sprites are pretty awesome, Ali!

I'm in too by the way (and thanks Vince for giving the heads up).

I'm still in the backgrounds drawing phase of my game so the sprite in this is taken from my choice of cover, but I do aim to draw original sprites...

I too have a TIG Source thread.

So tzachs and I managed to finish our entries to this competition.  (Unfortunately Ali didn't quite finish on time, but I'm still looking forward to his!)  There will be voting at some point in the near future, but in the mean time, 67 games were finished for the competition!  So there are a lot of weird, quirky, and fun games to try out!!

Give 'em a look see: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/511152/AGBIC%20page/index.html

Quite an impressive variety.  (And now this thread doesn't really belong in Adventure-related talk and chat any more :P)

The slightly adventurish Cat Poke is so far the best game I played in that compo.

Bah! I didn't finish in time because of stupid real life getting in the way. I will finish my game eventually, and when I do I'll have a chance to play tzachs and Vince's games properly. Congratulations on completion guys!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to yours, Ali!

Voting is open now, so if you feel like you've played enough of the games to choose the (up to) seven best games, you can cast your vote here: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=14293.0

Thank you Ali, and good luck with your game, it's in my must-play list...

The problem with this competition is that there are more than 50 entries, and it wouldn't be fair to vote before playing them all!
There is some truly awesome stuff in there...

That's why I'm not going to vote this time. There used to be a time when TIGSource covered these competitions on their main site, testing all games and posting the most notable entries, which helped reducing the number of compo games to play greatly, nowadays their site is rather dead.

Just in case anyone is interested, I've finished my entry (way too late!):

I'm aware that the engine has a few quirks, so I'd very much appreciate bug reports in addition to any feedback.

Well that was a very enjoyable little game. It's a bit short, but the world is great. Somehow reminds me of the atmosphere in Grim Fandango's year 2. Fullscreen would have been nice though.

This looks great Ali, this is made with DAGE right? I remember looking at the DAGE forums, and I recall seeing you there a lot. I'm also downloading. I thought something caused you to abandon hope, but I'm terribly glad you saw to it otherwise.

This game doesn't even want to start on my comp - some kind of access violation error message.
