AGS Awards 2010

What are the AGS Awards?
The AGS awards are an annual event where the best AGS games of the year are selected. The winners are chosen by you, with your vote!

How do they work?
There are two stages, nominations and vote. In the former, you nominate games that you think deserve to win; you can nominate as many games in as many categories you like. Read a list of nomination categories  here. Noms phase is closed! Peek at the noms here!
The top five nominees advance to the second phase: here you can cast just one vote in every category; the nominee with the most votes wins! Voting is over!

Where and when will the ceremony be held?
This year the ceremony will be held on AGS IRC, a chat channel for dudes and dudettes like us. The datetime is: Sat 5, Mar 2011 21:00 GMT!

Who's behind this?
This year the awards are organised by me (bicilotti), with the great help of CJ (forum-wide announcements and renewed nomination page) and Jake + Al Ninio (IRC ceremony).

I'm a non native english speaker. If you find mistakes in this post, or unidiomatic english, please spank me! I am a naughty boy!

ddq

Naturally, I will be campaigning for Oceanspirit Dennis as Best Player Character. This year's awards will be quite fun, I think!

Not that it really matters but the entry "Street Racing" is probably not
really a valid entry since it isn't an AGS game but a GameMaker file...

bicilotti

Thanks to our staunch chairman Chris Jones we now have

nomination page

And after last year's feedback:

✓ it's now possible to vote commercial games in every category
✓ there is a nice and big forum announcement for nomination phase too!

Nominations will close 30th January, at 23:30GMT

I am very grateful to Pumaman for his superb help! Show him live too!

Yes, I've stolen those symbols from Atelier. Ah!

Not at all! If you want to get in the shortlist I advise you to post in the FYC thread though!

Igor Hardy

Problem: Indiana Jones and the Seven Cities of Gold DEMO is not classified as a demo, therefore has little chance of getting nominated!

Wersus

Hmm... Is it so that if the game doesn't have a panel review, it can't be nominated as a short game (as it's a newly added game)?

Really? That sucks! An awful lot of the listed games doesn't have a panel review yet, including the title I'm thinking about right now.

Yes, I overlooked the fact that the panel is  now in charge to rate game length (and type, in case of non adventure games).

I've PM'd CJ, hopefully before midnight we'll come back with a solution.

If you have already nominated, pm me and I'll manually record your preference.

archived post here
I've asked CJ to manually move
   Shades of Greye
Oceanspirit Dennis: Pirates on the Poopdeck!
Barn Runner Halloween 1: Fully Automatic Mojo
   Disquiet
to the non adventure category.

Still, I've got in my hands a list of 16 non-rated games:

Episode 2: Redpants meets Robinson Clauseau
[ M ] Celtic Chaos - episode two : fishermen's fiends
[ M? ] Hard Space: Conquest of the Gayliks!
[ S ] Kitten Adventures
[ S ] The Astonishing Captain Skull
[ S ] Robolution
[ M ]Warning: Fragile! - Chapter I
[ M ] A Raindog Story
[ M ] Snakes of Avalon
[ S ] Abduction
[ S ] Oceanspirit Dennis: The Naked & The Ninja
[ S ] OceanSpirit Dennis: A Ray of Hope
[ S ] Echoes of Terra
[ S ] Dacey in the Dark - Prelude
[ M ] Professor Neely And The Death Ray Of Doom
[ S ] Fur Balls 1 - evil be thy name: Bundles of mayhem!
I can't play them all, so please help a wop out:
tell me which ones aren't short at all, so I can erase them from the list
tell me which ones are indeed short! These batch will be insta-submitted to the panelist for moving in "short games" category (short: <30mins).
I'd like to submit the list before midnight, so be quick!
edit: before each title you see the hypotetical category of nonrated games based on feedback I've received / my personal experience as a gamer.

Nice one Bici, best of luck with this!

Wow, there are a lot of very deserving games to nominate here - good work everyone!=)

I know this is just the nominations stage, and it's the first time i've voted in one of these so I might've misunderstood, but shouldn't there be a grace period for FYC posts before nominations are opened?

I mean, it seems that if I vote now I might miss any late FYC posts, yet the point of the thread seems to be to highlight any games we may have overlooked? Also if we're to suggest plausible categories for games, does that mean the current ones might change? IMO, for example, Blockz should come under more than just Best Demo.

Should I hold off my votes until closer to the end of the nominations phase then? *confused*

Hi stray!

Yes, a grace period could do for the noms stage (duly noted for 2011 :P), for this year keep in mind you have three weeks to make up your mind!

There was a slight problems with categories, but it has been almost completely corrected (I'll make an announcement on this thread soon) and they're not going to change!

My advice is: if you aren't an hardcore AGS player just give a week to try the games in FYC and then happy nominating!

I haven't used a chatroom for about 10 years (seriously) but I think I can dust off the old acronyms and figure out how to use an IRC client. Weekends are fine for me, or any time after 1830 GMT (of course, if the ceremony is to be held during the day then no worries).

Dualnames

I've got to say, if anyone hasn't used an irc client for ages, he may occasionally fail to do so on the exact night, so try joining just before the big night, see if you still can and stuff. Plus the more, the merrier!

40 minutes usually.

I'd say saturday night but many agsers prefer to go out and get drunk o saturday nights.
I'd like this ceremony to be inclusive to aussies and americans too (which could be impossible): 12AM Saturday (or sunday) anyone?

Depends on what timezone you're talking about, doesn't it?

Would it be possible to also reveal how many people voted during nominations in Awards 2007 and 2008?

EDIT: The Journey down is an awesome game, but it doesn't have particularly brilliant puzzles (most of the time you just click on an object to unlock the progress of the story). So I'm not surprised it's nominated in every possible category, except for the "puzzles" one.

I appreciate all the Man-ominations for Hard Space.  It shows that manly men still DO exist, after all, and like to make manly poses with their pants off whilst saving galaxies from certain doom.

To all you manly men (and women) I say thank you.  Just make sure you cast your manly votes as well when the final round surfaces, and perhaps I will make a manlier sequel with more action, sex, and mystery.

EDIT: The Journey down is an awesome game, but it doesn't have particularly brilliant puzzles . So I'm not surprised it's nominated in every possible category, except for the "puzzles" one.

Actually TJD is nominated in puzzles too. It's nominated in every eligible category except for programming.

You misunderstood me. I blame my very long sentence with double negations!
I meant "as a brilliant game it's normal it should be nominated in almost all categories. But it's not very legitimate to nominate it for Best Puzzles".
Anyway, it's nominated, so it's too late to change it, and once again it's a brilliiant game anyway.

ShiverMeSideways

According to this, it seems BST means two hours in the past for me, so Saturday night would be perfect for me, 'cos Sunday will probably be reserved for Uni homework or studying or something.

Also, a bit late, but here's my public service announcement:

QuoteHave you found yourself gettin' cozy with your mate, preparing to have a wild night on the moon of Gleemoot V and you thought to yourself "Hey, what I really need now is some music to get me in Stallion mode..." and you just couldn't find the right soundtrack to fit your earth-shattering, planet-melting, black hole-opening masculinity? Well, look no further than the Hard Space: Conquest of the Gayliks soundtrack! With such testosteron-boosting cuts as the "Hard Space Main Theme", "Shirt Off!" and the "SS (SexShip) Penetrator", you're sure to give the unsuspecting victim of your GIANORMOUS affections a night she'll never forget! Vote for it now in the AGS Awards and we will send it to your house, along with a can of Sloppy Joe's Hand Cream Lotion and a stack of the finest porno rags that can be found in an old man's basement this side of the Spiral Arm! Not only that, but we'll also throw in a discount coupon for the doctor's office when your head will undoubtedly explode from the surge of manly manliness that will go through it the instant you hear the first notes.

Disclaimer: one or several of the things contained in here might be total BS. However, you should still vote for it.

On a more serious note, being nominated is just huge for me, even if I don't win (and I probably won't, but maybe I will, although it's possible I won't) and I would like to publicly thank ProgZMax again for the huge opportunity of working with him and I would also like to thank everyone who nominated Hard Space for Best Music, you guys and gals make my metalized black heart warm and my pants tight! :D

Also, I would like to plug one of the most kind and supportive people around - Technocrat. He's been really great to work with, and he has made some excellent games, and he's just awesome - he deserves to win SOMETHING, dammit! I know Technobabylon's a big thing, but don't overlook Operation Forklift, either! (And I'm not just saying that 'cos I did the music for it, but also because it's a great game and very innovative for AGS, GO PLAY IT NOW!)

Ok, long (and slightly emotional) post over. Thanks again to everyone and cheers! Can't wait for the ceremony! :D

If it ends up being 9:00pm BMT, that should be somewhere around 6:00am Sunday Morning here in Tokyo. If you're conscious at that hour, it'll likely still be pretty damned cold outside (Snowing right now, not sure about 2 weeks from now), so curling up someplace warm and watching the awards doesn't seem like such a stretch.

Well, it depends on what gameplay you like. If you play adventure games primarily for the puzzles, then you're likely to vote the same to both questions. If, for example, you play them for the exploration, then it's different.

So anyway, it looks like there have been only five games written last year :) what's up with the same five names showing up in almost every category? (not that I mind, really, but I found it rather funny to see the nom sheet)

Snarky

My argument is more that puzzles only matter for how well they work as gameplay. There's no way, in my opinion, to have a great puzzle that makes for terrible gameplay: if it doesn't play well then it isn't a good puzzle. Quality of puzzles is therefore fully captured by the "Best Gameplay" category, and is clearly one of the main components of that category (since puzzles make up the majority of gameplay in most adventure games). So I don't see the point in breaking out puzzles as its own sub-category, any more than I'd see the point in breaking out inventory puzzles as another category.

straydogstrut

I agree, puzzles are one component of the gameplay category, just as I agree with Radiant when he suggests exploration is another (and I play adventure games for the latter). But I don't think puzzles alone make the gameplay. A game may still have terrible gameplay despite having a really great puzzle in my opinion. I think that's why the puzzle category exists: to recognise the great puzzles as distinct, regardless of the worth (or not) of the game they find themselves in.

Snarky

Quote from: straydogstrut on Sat 19/02/2011 12:06:53A game may still have terrible gameplay despite having a really great puzzle in my opinion.

I think that requires either that the game is fundamentally broken on some level (e.g. UI, controls, bugs), or that something other than puzzles makes up a large part of the gameplay - for example that there is a lot of exploring in the game (though at some point I think an exploration task becomes a kind of puzzle) - and that this part of the gameplay is really badly done.

I don't think the latter case is particularly plausible (an exploration-focused, puzzle-light adventure game with terrible exploration but brilliant puzzles?), and in either case I don't think it matters, because as I said, puzzles are only important for their role as gameplay. What you describe sounds like a game with a few bright spots in otherwise bad gameplay, and I don't see the point in having a category just to have a chance to accommodate those games. (Especially since it's more likely that the games with the best puzzles will have good overall gameplay, and therefore dominate both categories.)

Radiant

Okay. Maybe it would help if we have some concrete examples?

Could some people give the names of well-known adventure games that, in their opinion, have either good puzzles and bad gameplay, or good gameplay and bad puzzles?

straydogstrut

Quote from: Snarky on Sat 19/02/2011 12:27:09

I was thinking more along the lines of the former since gameplay covers more than just puzzles. It can encompass all our interactions with the game and the context of those interactions. In adventure games this could include exploration, dialogue and so on (each of which can also be puzzles, I agree). I don't really have an example of a broken game as such though so I will concede this point.

I was also leaving room for games which are simply puzzles. For real examples, lets say Blockz or the Professor Layton games. While in such cases, puzzles would almost exclusively make up the totality of the gameplay, I personally feel the two should be distinct. That is not to suggest that either couldn't appear in either category, but I'm not sure it's fair to compare them under one category alone.

Having said that, the more I think about this, the more i'm swaying to your argument: the puzzles category isn't really necessary if we have a gameplay category. I think the problem lies in our definition of gameplay. Someone who doesn't play for the puzzles may not recognise a great puzzle as great gameplay. I don't see the harm in distinguishing puzzles - a major component of adventure games - so that they get due recognition.

Stupot

If a game consisted of JUST puzzles... and you had to go from one room to another, solving puzzles and NOTHING else... then no matter how good those puzzles happen to be, I wouldn't dream of nominating it for a 'best gameplay' award.

Snarky

But like I've been saying all along: do we need an award for that? Is there a good reason to honor games that have good puzzles but bad gameplay? The role of puzzles in adventure games is to provide interesting gameplay, surely?

(Personally, I wouldn't have a problem nominating a game like Linus Bruckman for the "best gameplay" award, even if the gameplay consists of one big puzzle, since I think the puzzle plays uncommonly well because of how it's integrated with the storytelling and the control scheme. Or Professor Layton, for that matter. If the gameplay consists of puzzles, and the puzzles are good, which is to say they provide good gameplay, why wouldn't it qualify for best gameplay?)

Igor Hardy

#151
Personally I vote a bit differently in each of these two categories. In Puzzles I vote for how original and cleverly constructed are the puzzles. Stand-out and elaborate puzzle concepts is something I find very important to encourage.

When choosing Best Gameplay, on the other hand, I tend to reward things like the puzzles' integration with the rest of the game, the pacing, immersion (in terms of how convincing is the player's illusion of agency), the amount of extra content.

To give a brutal example, I'm significantly more critical of a game's gameplay if it keeps throwing at the player annoying messages like "You're playing a stupid amateur game!" and "This was dumb!" like it happens in Jimmy The Troublemaker, regardless of how good puzzles the game has.

A7A

There should be a category for innovation is all I have to say. And for best debutant.

cat

DOTT: using the paint on the fence to get a skunk-cat is a puzzle; being able to switch characters and send items through time is a gameplay feature (that, of course, allows for more sophisticated puzzles)

Transpacific: the Mindinterface is a special gameplay feature. The puzzles itself where mainly escape the room, not too innovative.

Loom: completely new gameplay

For me, the gameplay award is for gameplay mechanics and not puzzles. A game can have good puzzles without any special gameplay. But good, innovative gameplay can lead to good puzzles.

Snarky

cat, you make an interesting distinction. I would respond that the puzzles you describe are also part of the gameplay. What you call gameplay or gameplay features, I would be more inclined to call the "mechanics," though of course the mechanics influence the gameplay.

Could you maybe suggest how the 2010 nominees distinguish themselves in terms of gameplay features/mechanics? For all their qualities and original elements, they are fairly traditional in how they work, aren't they? The only thing I can think of that is a little unusual is the interaction between the real world and the trance in Technobabylon I, and that's pretty much straight-up lifted from Beneath a Steel Sky.

I think we've now had at least three different interpretations of what the gameplay category is for as distinct from puzzles. To me, this strengthens the case that the two should be merged into one category, perhaps "Game Design (puzzles and other gameplay)."

Stupot

#157
For me, 'gameplay' covers more than just puzzles.

Things like replayability, multiple endings, multiple characters, linearity... make no mistake, these are all gameplay features... and they all exist regardless of how good/bad or plentiful the puzzles are.

[edit]
Thinking about it, I would use the Blackwell series as examples of games where I would consider voting for Best Gameplay, but not for Best Puzzles.  In these games you can switch between characters, you can use the phone and the internet to make enquiries... things like this, for me, really add to the gameplay.  And of course, these gameplay elements form the basis of many of the puzzles (i.e. using Joey to go through a wall and overhear a conversation), but in my opinion, the puzzles themselves in Blackwell are not really that special compared to the puzzles in some other games out there.

I would say so. Perhaps the award would be something like "most promising newcomer", in which case it wouldn't matter whether the game was a demo or a full game.

That's a good point. The nominee would have to be the person who contributes the bulk of the game - the artist or the person who does the scripting. It's not an easy one to pin down, so there would need to be some clear rules about who would qualify.

Awesome!! I got the jist of Wyz's original source so will see what I can make of this.

Yay finally got the MP4 downloaded, thanks Abstauber=D Re the youtube thing: seems you need someone who has an old Director account to be able to upload longer than 15 mins, it's no good switching now. I'd offer to host but I don't have my own server so not sure what restrictions my host would put on it..the whole server thing is a bit of a black hole to me i'm afraid. If Peder can host it on his own server, great, i'll be sure to donate.

Checked and the archive seems to be fine, as expected.

I really enjoyed the ceremony as well!  Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thank you to the people who put that thing together!  Very very cool!

This community puts out a remarkable amount of quality games every year and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon!  Yay!  clap clap clap lesbians clap

I will gladly host a streaming and downloadable HQ version on the AGSArchives server.

That would be awesome. I'd love to easily be able to share this with all sorts of people.

Thanks everyone for your support during the awards campaign and also a huge thanks to duals + team for making the absolutely mindblowingly awesome AGS IRC client for the ceremony! It was truly an odd yet awesome event.

Dualnames

By the way, whoever wants the lesbian pic. Let me know.   ;)

Damn, I didn't even see that I got a medal. Thanks!
As for work, I barely did anything, contrary to whatever people say. If I'd pick anyone, I'd say Dualnames was the mastermind behind it all.

I was suprised by the number of people there, and I hope that I'll see even more attendees next year.

Mods raises a valid point. Why don't we have the P3N15 award anymore?

cosmicr

so who won? is there a web page for all the awards? I feel like unless I'm here every hour checking for updates or on the irc channel I never know what's going on!

I have an unlimited length Youtube account, so as soon as I can, I'll get it uploaded and linked here, so people don't have to download an MP4 to use it.

Here we go. Not the best quality, unfortunately.

Hello everyone,

I was unable to join the ceremony (again), so I want to thank all of you that voted for Matt to the Future for best demo.

I was very excited to win! Matt was excited as well! I appreciate the votes very much - it makes me very happy!

Here's a little something that I whipped up for all the voters:

Grim: "You're making me want to quit smoking... stop it!;)"
miguel: "I second Grim, stop this nonsense! I love my cigarettes!"

bicilotti

That's one excellent drawing Snake! What a way to say thank you!

Ponch

Very cool, Snake. Thanks! That's the most unsettling depiction of the porcupine yet! ;)

Pumaman

Congratulations to all the winners, nominees, and as always, to everyone who made a game in 2010!

Sorry I couldn't make it to the ceremony; thanks to bicilotti for organising the awards, and to everyone else who helped make it possible this year!
