Hola forumistas!

Firstly i should point out that when i say 'adult cartoons' i mean 'cartoons intended for adults', not porn.

So I'm a big fan of MTV's Downtown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7L0kgS19PM) and i wondered if anyone could suggest any other cool adult cartoons to me.

Anime and western are both fine.

:(

Nice header though, got me in & watching

I find the original TMNT better now that I'm all grown up (eh?). It's full of jokes kids don't get.

This is not bad, though it defnetly has an MTV vibe. I supposed you watched Drawn together, it's got it's moments.
Well what about Adult swim, they have shows that are mostly fun (like Venture Bros. etc.). Also Ugly Americans from ComedyCentral and Archer (don't know who makes that).

I dunno, I'm looking forward to other people's suggestions.

Yeah, I love it when shows do that, Pixar cartoons do that rather often.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

Friendship is magic. It really is, you guys!

Radiant

Watership Down.

Yes, it's about bunnies. No, it's really not suitable for small children.

Off the top of my head:

Persepolis
Waltz With Bashir
Belleville Rendez-vous
The Illusionist

These are all films, mind, and with pretty serious subject matter (except Belleville Rendez-vous I suppose.)

ALSO most things by Studio Ghibli. They are suitable for children, but I get more out of them now than I would have back then I'd say.)

These are all fairly obvious choices, so cue some animation snob coming in and laughing derisively.

Fritz the Cat (1972)                       The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat (1974)

A hypocritical swinging college        Fritz the Cat may have lost one of
student cat raises hell in a satiric   his lives in the comics, but in his
vision of various elements on the   new movie, he has eight more lives
1960's.                                            left to go! While his wife screams
at him, Fritz lights up a joint and

Awesome to watch a cartoon from Serbia!

Macskafogó / Cat City Though I don't think it's that great.

La planète sauvage

Time Masters

People also tend to like King of the Hill

If you consider both, adult and adult, people tend to like "Elfen Lied". Of course I've only heard a friend's friend talking about it...

Technocrat

I would have to say "Superjail".

It's like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" meets "Prison Break".

And very funny.

These are relatively mainstream, so I would imagine that you're already familiar with them, but I thought I'd mention them anyway for anyone who isn't already familiar:

Archer
The story of ISIS, a top-secret privatized spy organization and its top agent, Sterling Archer - an oafish, womanizing, alcoholic, misogynistic James Bond analogue who is just perfect. Voiced by an all-star cast, including a number of the cast of cult classic TV show "Arrested Development".

The Venture Bros.
A parody of basically all of the 'for-kids' action comics and cartoons of the 60's - particularly Jonny Quest and the Hardy Boys. Revolves around the eponymous Venture brothers, Hank and Dean, as well as their father, washed-up super scientist Thaddeus Venture and their "Half-Swedish Killing Machine" bodyguard, Brock Samson, as well as one of the best Rogues' Galleries in contemporary television, predominantly "The Monarch" and his partner in crime/girlfriend "Dr. Girlfriend".

For Japanese cartoons, I recommend:

Death Note
The story of a bored supra-genius university student who comes into possession of a grim reaper's notebook - a magical item that instantly kills anyone whose name is written into it. Blurs the boundaries between good and evil as you follow the antagonist in his crusade to create a perfect world, free of crime but ruled by fear of divine retribution.

Berserk (Site in Japanese)
An epic medieval fantasy tale of a young warrior named Guts, who joins a band of mercenaries called the "Band of the Hawk", led by charismatic, megalomaniacal would-be knight king Griffith on a quest of honor, betrayal, love and loss. Not for the faint of heart. The cartoon series is a little old, but is being remade as an animated film soon. The comic is still in publication, with as of this writing 35 books averaging roughly 250+ pages each.

Yeah Archer is awesome. I love the whole mix of contemporary and 70's style elements. And the fact that Archer is voiced by the same guy that does Ben Katz makes it even better.

I also remember one from a while back called Metalocalypse, following the death metal band Dethklok which enjoys a popularity level unheard of in reality, ranking as the seventh largest economy on Earth. The fictional band members are Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Pickles The Drummer, William Murderface, and Toki Wartooth. Nuff said.

And I hear Harvey Birdman is pretty wacky, retooling existing Hanna Barbera animations into court cases -- including Scooby and Shaggy arrested for possession, Fred Flintstone turned mafia don, Boo Boo accused of terrorism, and Super Friends's Apache Chief suing after spilled coffee on his lap prevents him from, ahem, "growing larger".

It's a darn shame they ever cancelled Kid Notorious, that show was really good.

Dualnames

Cowboy Bebop
Foori Cooorrrriiii!! (it's about everything and mostly about the coming of AGE, plus great music.)
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

I tried to get Steve into this... I think he thought it was kinda weird (which is correct). I personally love it ^__^. Been meaning to check out Cowboy Bebop forever as well, but haven't gotten around to it.

I've also been meaning to grab myself copies of the Æon Flux box set. It was twisted and violent and sexy and creepy, a beautifully odd series, and used to be on MTV just like Downtown  :=

Mr Flibble

Kaiji

Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji! I love this show. Kaiji is thrust into impossible debt, several million yen, after cosigning a loan for an acquaintance. Rather than taking 11 years suffering under the burden of repayments, he accepts an invitation to an illegal gambling event where he can gamble against other people in his predicament. The real draw of this show is the impossible odds stacked against Kaiji... and how he reaches inside the mechanics of the rigged games he's embroiled in, the cheaters and traitors... and manipulates them to his advantage. Oh and I think he cries in every episode. It's a lot like Liar's Game if you're familiar with that. Look on TokyoToshokan for a torrent. Season 1 was subbed by The-Triad and season 2 is being subbed quickest by Nutbladder.

Planetes

Planetes is the story of people who collect debris orbiting Earth, in a near-future setting where space garbage has become a problem.. The animation in this show is really beautiful, as is the music. It's all about the character development with this show, and they're beautifully defined and developed. This is the only show that makes me cry even on repeat viewings, though it's not all dramatic, there are some amazing, real-life peril action scenes too. I can't recommend this enough. This has been dubbed and released on DVD in English speaking regions but I'd only recommend that if they have dual-audio and subtitles (I've never been fond of the voices they use in English dubs).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

(There's another anime series just called Fullmetal Alchemist, but this is the second version which sticks to the manga more closely).
This is more of an action story, but there's a lot to enjoy. The animation is beyond beautiful and the music is wonderful. FMA is the story of two brothers who attempt to resurrect their mother using the power of alchemy by performing human transmutation, which is forbidden. However, alchemy follows the law of equivalent exchange, and in exchange for what the boys create, the elder brother loses a leg and the younger loses his entire body. The elder brother manages, after seeing "the truth", to sacrifice his arm in order to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armour. And from there they begin their journey, to regain what they have lost.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

LimpingFish

Shigurui is a pretty good anime. It's self-contained, spread over 12 episodes, so you don't get dragged into any long back-story or universe.

You can also watch it for free, if you can circumvent the region-locked website.
