Shameless self promotion... now with video!
« on: 21 Jun 2011, 18:20 »
Good eve' chaps and chapettes.
I know I don't post often, but I though all you lovely people might like a little bit of music to listen to. My band The Universal just finished a new EP and we have it up on soundcloud:
http://soundcloud.com/theuniversalrock
Anyway, I'd love to hear what you all think, but didn't think this was really worth of Crits board.

Oh, and all the songs are free to download too. So enjoy that too. If you want. You don't have to.

Edit:
Just thought I'd let all you delightful people know we have a little bit of a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24P-FK-O96g
Anyway, figured I'd dig up this rather than start a whole new thread.
Hope you like, if you dont, I hate you!
But not really, you're all lovely.

Not my style of music, I'm afraid. Nor do I know anything about Indie Rock to know how it stands among other bands. However, as a musician-wannabe, I can try to provide some feedback.

General: Overall, I didn't like the production. I know this is just an EP and it is to be expected, but I feel it could benefit a lot from it. Besides that, I can't think of anything specific I'd want to change. At least it's not horrible or too loud or something like that, it's just that it could be much better if the instruments had more presence in the mix.

I like Sometimes and Spooks the most, but can't decide which is better. I feel they are the more unique songs from the list. I think I like them probably because they feel less linear than the rest. Obviously, I like the few progressive elements thrown around. My least favorite is Buy the Ticket, but I don't know why. I guess it's because it sounds more "normal" to me :P As for I Will Forget You, my criticism is that I feel like the vocals are harsher than they should be for that song.

I can at least tell that the songs aren't "cheap" like much of the music around. I like the riff duo between the guitar and the bass. It's very well done, especially in Spooks.

I wish you and your band best luck!

suicidal pencil: Metal is more my thing too. Glad you thought it nice though.

Paper Carnival: Yeah, the mix didn't turn out the way we wanted. We were meant to have more time to work on it, and all put our ideas in as a group. Instead the guitarist took it away for a day and brought it back :P
Glad to hear your feedback, Spooks is probably my favourite one of our lot because I like my own basslines a lot. I'm very vain  :=

Cam, i like it. You sound beautiful <3

Mixing is pretty weak though! You should send it off to be mixed and mastered, maybe someone from AGS could help out? Having a band member mix the track is never a good thing  :=

The composition and riffs are pretty.

Not my music either I'm affraid. To be totally Frank (takes quite an effort, being Marco, not having seen Frank since graduating from college) the singer is the weakest link (his voice sounds too generic Indie, which is not at all my genre). The guitarist could really teach me a thing or 2 about accompaniment, kudos! I did like the song Spooks. Also, on one of the songs you started with quite confusing timing, and that's a compliment!

BTW, FYI, my 2 favourite songs are Yoo Doo Right and Chain Reaction by Can (so I'm difficult to please). But keeep it up, you've got something worthwhile going here!

Ps I wrote he compliment about your guitarist before reading that he hijacked the mix, which is a bit naughty of him.

Bit of an update, we have a fancy video which I've added to the post at the start of the thread. If you're too lazy to scroll all the way back up, here it is again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24P-FK-O96g

That particular song is not exactly my type of music... but I would love to hear more :) When can we expect to hear new songs?

By the way, the quality of the recording was really great (mixing and all that good stuff).
By any chance, would you be interested in a little collaboration? I'm a movie director and, coincidentally, I'm looking for a band to work with on two songs for my upcoming Series. I can only offer promotion and as much advertising as possible ^.^

silverwolfpet: Well at the moment we're finalizing the official release of our first EP, probably start recording early next year because we're going to be doing a small tour. I PMed you about the other thing.

I like it. Are you inspired by the Arctic Monkeys by any chance?

Don't like it much, sounds kinda derivative and about 3 years behind a passed trend.

Also i agree that the mix is pretty bad.

Not really going for a trend, but hey, can't please everyone. Still got a listen out of you :)
