Been reading a lot about M$ new directions lately (i.e. abandoning .net in favor of HTML5 & JS and now Win8).  Just wondering what other ppl think and what affect it will (or should) have on AGS.

It shouldn't have any effect since as most sensible people know, you're supposed to skip every other Windows release. It's like the Star Trek movies. I'll be just fine with 7 until 9 comes, as I was with XP during the dark ages of Vista. Seriously though, MS is kinda trying to follow a shitty trend with all this touchy web hooha and it looks balls.

Win32 apps will work fine, so it shouldn't have a huge impact on AGS.  And it's not like there's going to be any x86 emulation on the ARM version of W8 so I wouldn't expect to see AGS on Windows tablets very soon.

.NET is not being abandoned - the new Metro UI just fragments the framework one step further.  The best write up on it I've read is on Miguel de Icaza's blog.

To me it basically looks like Win7 with a better taskmanager and a mostly useless MediaCenter-like shell full of bright colors that give me a headache. I watched the Gizmodo eight-minute highlight reel, and I was like... this is it?

Well, yeah, ARM tablets. But if Intel manages to get its foot in the door, they might show up on the x86 tablets (said to run on 'future' single-core atom 'medfield' cpus).

Given that Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 + touchy-feely metro, all should run fine, and in the case of x86 tablets, WHOO FINALLY.
