A thought struck me last night - has anyone yet been able to sufficiently convert a Roland MT-32 sound bank into a General MIDI one?

Pardon me, I might not have made myself clear: is it possible to set the music output to MT-32, somehow put a General MIDI patch in place, so it plays standard MIDI music? What I'm getting at is, could I get one of Sierra's early SCI games to play General MIDI?

I'm not sure if I understand you but you want to play classic games and have the music sound as if played with a Mt-32 module?

If that is the case you should give Munt a try. That is what I use for that., and the results are reasonable.
It might not be easy to set up and the bank ROMs are not included for obvious reasons, but if you will look for them you will find them.

Hmm... not exactly. I was thinking more about swapping the MT-32 sound bank for the MIDI one.
(Come to think of it, I doubt I'd be allowed to buy a used MT-32 anyway!)

It wouldn't be difficult if you would just say what you want. Wyz asked you "You want to play classic games and have the music sound as if played with a Mt-32 module?" And you said "not exactly." Then WTF do you want?

Could you give straight answers to these questions?

-What do you want it to sound like?
-What kind of hardware do you hope to use to produce the sounds?
-Within which applications were you hoping it would work?

Then people can tell you if it's possible, and if so, what you need to do to make it work.

If, after all, what you want is what Wyz said, you already have your answer. It's not just a matter of switching out the sound banks, you also have to emulate all the MT-32 commands and sound processing. That's what munt is for.

Right... I think I've got it straight now. What I was asking was: can we have the General MIDI driver play the MT-32 compositions stored in the music files. Bearing in mind that we might have to assemble a new sound bank to do that. Yes. I think that's right.
