Thanks guys! Ones with noticeable expressions are certainly most likely to be picked*. But great stuff so far!

* That said there isn't a lot of room for pixels is there  ;D

Just to let people know, a lone character from an AGS or adventure game is likely to be included, but a random redraw of a single default forum smiley probably won't - if you want to do those, draw a whole uniform set, inspired by something AGS (the current lot are Roger).

We definitely need this.

Probably a bit wonky as there're some difficulty with transparency and animation though. At least we should have this cup, even a stationary one.

It's kinda tiny too.  The default emoticons are 15x15px, although some are larger.  Could you / someone scale it up to fit in better?

Jared - Trilby needs transparency!

So clearly I'm more n00bish than I thought - anyone know I give a .png transparency?

In photoshop, I believe you have to create a new image with a background set to "transparent" and then paste it in there. If there's a better way, I'm keen to hear it because it's frustrating when I keep forgetting to do that.

EDIT: When I had paintshop pro, it was easier because you can just "export as .png" and then set the background colour as transparent. Easy.

Jared, all you need is an editor that supports saving in .png with transparency. I usually use GIMP.

To make the background transparent (if it already isn't), first I select the color I want to be transparent by the select-tool -> select by color, and after that I choose Colors -> color to alpha. If I don't select the color I want to make transparent and just use "color to alpha", it makes that color totally transparent and the rest of the colors translucent, which isn't desirable.

When you open the file in PS, you can doubleclick on the layer in the layers palette. That turns it from a "Background" layer to a regular Layer 0. Then you can simply delete the bits of the image that should be transparent and save it.

I like that one: or

the limey lizard one is cool, but I don't see much use for it.
The other ones are either not very readable, or rather dull.

A lot of detail is lost in some of these, remember to keep the colour count low!

Bwana, for example - cool sprite but is a little hard to make out if you don't get the reference. I guess some characters lend themselves better towards uber low res than others.

The Roger smileys are very functional, they're easily read without zooming in. I think this is the standard we should aim to achieve with any new smileys.

Well, I better put my adventuring cap on, and have a go...

That was oddly difficult. I guess I had trouble as even the reference image was Blurry McBlurryface. I hope I have at least recognition going for me...until someone comes up with a better version of this idea :=

(Damn..it looks really bad next to that....)

They're all being made slightly too small. And as Chicky mentioned, I agree on keeping the color counts low because half of them I have a hard time recognizing.

I definitely don't see that as Limey other than the green.

Not exactly terribly creative:

What's the background color of the new board going to be?
