Custard goes to the Big Apple
« on: 14 Jun 2012, 22:33 »
That's right! New York, New York. The city so nice, they named it twice. Manhattan is the other name.

Work are sending me off to New Jersey next month. But, fear not! I plan to stay in New York for 3 nights.

Can anyone recommend a good place to find a hotel, something not too expensive but in a newbie tourist friendly location. I have no idea. Does anyone want to have an impromptu ags meet?

Love,
Tom

If work are sending you, are they not also paying for your hotel?

For the work portion of my trip, yep. Not for my holiday though!

In total staying 7 nights, 4 in New Jersey (paid for by work) and 3 paid for by myself.

If you're staying in New Jersey, you might want to check out Atlantic City. Crap load of Casinos along the beach and boardwalk. Six flags great adventure is also in New Jersey.

If you're bored, maybe you could check out the Museum of Natural History in New York, the planetarium is also kinda cool. There are tons of Broadway plays too. You could visit the top of the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty. There are also helicopter rides around the city and boat rides too.

I'm sure you could find a million hotels in New Jersey that are reasonably priced around what AGA mentioned.

Have fun and enjoy!

Going to the top of the Empire State Building is fun, but really expensive. It's one of those do-it-once-in-your-life sorts of things. I don't advocate actually going up in the Statue of Liberty though. The much cheaper (free) option is to take the Staten Island ferry, which goes by the statue and gives a beautiful view.

OH! And as far as lodging goes -- skip the hostel, and seek out a sub-let. Lots of folks will lend out their spare bedroom for the night for a tiny amount of money, comparatively. http://www.airbnb.com/ is a good website to start with, because they have reviews, and a search that will let you limit by check-in/check-out dates.

You might want to start keeping an eye on Groupon/Living Social to see if anything pops up that you'd like to do. It seems to be often hair salons and mani/pedis, but sometimes fun things to do or restaurants to try pop up (and maybe you get get a mani/pedi!) Sometimes hotels are there, too.. I think?

I'm sure you have plenty of ideas of things to do or see, but if you'd like more, TimeOut New York tends to have pretty good event listings (sometimes cheap-to-free).

And I'll second the airbnb idea. I have a friend who swears by it as a way of finding lodging at an affordable price, and another who lists a room on there and loves it (I'd recommend her, but she prefers longer-term guests). However, you should look at booking those *now*.

Tom, if you haven't booked a place yet, I stayed at this amazing place that I found via airbnb.com when I was in New York in June.  It was very affordable and incredibly comfortable.  Let me know if you're thinking of going that route and I'll send you the info.

Hey Vince, I have a reservation somewhere (which I can cancel) acting as somewhat of a safety net, happy with it if I don't find anywhere else. Always prefer a personal recommendation so if you don't mind sending across those details, that'd be much appreciated!
