Are there any programs similar to ags but for non-adventure game stuff?

I honestly have no idea. I checked it several years ago. All I remember is that it allows to create scripts by use of GUI: actions and conditions resembled by icons, that sort of stuff. I never did anything finished with it though.

Construct (no programming, free edition available)
Similar (it's sort of made for games like Longest Journey, Lost horizon etc. 3d characters on 2d backgrounds, free) Wintermute engine
Ethanon engine for RPG with cool effects.

The impossible often has a kind of integrity which the merely improbable lacks.

The games factory if you want to create platform games etc. no programming skills required. I used it a lot before. But you should go for the games factory 2 in that case...the first on e came out during the 486 era hehe.

There is also http://www.visionaire-studio.net which is the engine behind Zak McKracken 2. Its ok, but personally feel its a commercial rip off of AGS 2.72.

If you want to make almost any type of 2D game I suggest Game Maker, I made quite a few little games with it in just over a week.

The games are just one level, still have a few bugs and you can't finish the level. :)

Here are some screen shots.

Top left is a Metroidvania type game, top right is a batman platformer, when you jump you can grapple and climb up the nearest ledge. And the bottom one is a SHMUPS game.

And here are two VERY bad games I made in just a few hours.

Game Maker 9 is shaping up to be a really sound development platform for 2D AND 3D stuff, so it's worth keeping an eye on.

I have also used Game Maker before and I can attest to its ease of use and flexibility with platformers, much like AGS is for adventures.

Oh how I wish you were modest ;)
But I'd like to try the batman game. I like jumping and running AND grappeling! And also the batman sprite looks cool :)
