Honing my sprite animation skills
« on: 23 Jul 2012, 16:14 »
For my project I've started to do sprite animations proper "rotoscope" style, where I record short clips of people doing stuff, and then look at keyframes for references when drawing animations.
It's amazing how bad you are at trying to guess what motions look like, compared to when you have a true motion to look at.

I haven't been too meticulous with shades and details (I'm still doing everything by myself, and have to consider the time frame), but instead I try to get the overall motion look ok.
Feel free to offer c&c :)

Edit. Ok I saw that I chopped off her feet :(

Looks nice. The guy's back might be a bit too straight when he bends fully.

Maybe a design decision, but have you thought about him bending the other way around (so the arm closer to camera is bended, while the other stretches out), the other arm is not that visible so it kind of looks like he left the arm in his pants. I don't, not a big deal, just a thought.
The impossible often has a kind of integrity which the merely improbable lacks.

His back is too straight for too long like Anian said, also I think you could use one more frame before putting his hand in his pocket.

Yeah the back thing and the hand does seem to go into his pocket to quick but if you add another frame it might look wierd.

Nice job though there wonderful, the other animation looks perfect imo.

looking really good, but as you want some c&c I'm gonna nitpick :)

I'm watching the woman in 4x (thanks for that feature!) and see there are some frames with 2 empty pixels between her legs. This probably depends on the ingame BG but over the bright forum BG it looks strange and I'd fill it with the dark shade of the trousers.
Also as the belt thing stay where it is and doesn't move back when going down it seems like her bum suddenly grows fat.
And the belt around her breasts disappears on some frames.

About the guy... I have nothing to add that wasn't mentioned before besides it looks uncomfortable to bend down like this over all, but as you are rotoscoping this must be a rather natural move.
