Author Topic: Heroine's Quest - The Herald Of Ragnarok - Now available on Steam!  (Read 47352 times)

Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.

Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

W00t! Looks like it might be one of the best RPGs ever made with AGS :cheesy: :cheesy:

How long is the average play time? Is it a full-length game?

PS: The second and third images don't work on the game page (AGS website).
We all have our time machines, don't we?

They said it's comparable in size to the largest QFG games.

By the way, huge HUGE congratulations for the release.

I congratulate thee for yon release!

I've played a bit, and it's looking pretty solid so far. As a Swede I'm amused by some of the names :)
My only gripe at this point is that the heroine's propensity to grow cold has hampered her exploration of the beautiful surroundings slightly. But maybe I've missed clicking on a big nice fur coat somewhere...

I wish you would have released the game earlier by 3 months, that way Karen S would have enjoyed seeing this game released.

I know she was part of the graphic design of the game for some time, may her soul rest in peace.

Anyway, I am very happy for the game, and really expect playing it...

Thank you.

Hey, not to be a negative bastard, but can we perhaps get a corresponding winsetup.exe or perhaps whatever settings I need to do to make it do 2x nearest neighbor in fullscreen?

Because when I play this on my home media center (a win7 pc), my TV keeps saying it's not an appropriate resolution (hence why I'm assuming it's trying to set 320x200/240) and that message keeps hovering over the screen :/

EDIT: Fixed it by stealing Gemini Rue's winsetup, renaming the Herione's Quest exe to Gemini Rue.exe and changing the settings. Still, though, 640x480 is probably a better resolution anyhoo? :)

Erm, is winsetup missing in this game? :)
@voh, you can run appropriate setup by going into game folder and typing "GameName.exe --setup" in the Explorer address line.

Also by default the game installs in Program Files, so if you're not running on Windows XP make sure you change the directory to somewhere else that doesn't need admin privileges, if you do need to change the settings :)

I just checked, and you can indeed do that before the battle engages. Though you should also be able to manage to survive longer than that if you're careful with your stats and how you play :).

This is an amazing game, although it's pretty tough. It captures the QfG-feel perfectly, including the occasional frustration :)
I feel like I'm stuck in seven different places at once, and I don't have any money left to boot, but just when I'm ready to give up, I'll discover something else, and I get the feeling this game is vast.
Amazing job, and the voice-acting is really good so far.

Some nitpicky things I noticed:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
Throwing the dagger (as a warrior) makes it fly anywhere expect at what you're aiming, and it tends to land behind walkbehinds, so I can't pick it back up. Not sure if that's intentional?
Also, if you end up in the void, you can still interact with things, and the message inserts an empty string where the name of the object would go.
Technical stuff:
-the reflections are squashed...!! (wrong) (laugh)
-and what's with no setup and a default res of 320x200?? And a damn installer without a zip only mirror? (wtf) I get why people not familiar with AGS would prefer an installer, but how are they supposed to figure out that you need to rename the exe (because of the space and apostrophe) and call it with --setup...?

By popular request, we'll be releasing a ZIP version shortly.

Khris, I'm curious what you want a setup for? You should be able to change all the settings from within the game. Also, you don't need to rename anything though, you just put the filename in quotes if it contains spaces (or use tab completion, or use windows shortcuts instead).

Voh, would you mind running the game with the --log --fullscreen parameters and posting the logfile? We'd like to find out why it doesn't find an appropriate resolution on your screen. Log is saved in "Users\<Name>\Saved Games\.ags" on Vista, Win7 and Win8, and in "My Documents\My Saved Games\.ags" on WinXP. Thanks!

And since someone asked, yes you can get full points with every character, whether pure class or hybrid. Of course, certain actions give points e.g. for the warrior but not the rogue, or vice versa.

This game is truly amazing! The constant threat of freezing is both annoying and motivating to proper "care" for the character so I love/hate and wouldn't wanna miss. I have no idea how to get more money but once I do I know where to get the MAGICAL cloths that will hopefully keep me from dying a cold death.

Here's some feedback/bug reporting:

- The notepad doesn't work well/at all: From the initial 5 or 6 editable lines I lost all but 2 by simply clicking on them (I believe). I really didn't get what was going on and all of a sudden they were all gone. Now I have to editable lines left but dues to the limited characters in them it's pretty pointless. This is sad since I could really need it with all the open quests.
- I have a German keyboard where Z and Y are swapped. If you ever release a new version and unless Y is used somewhere else to forbid this: Could you simply make Y input also accepted besides Z in combat?
- A far worse problem is the mage's game I tried to play with the Wizard: From what I understand the "character" is moved on the map by pressing some keys. Those keys weren't shown/told (I think) and I tried to arbritarily hit keys and I found left and right scattered somewhere (can't remember which they were). But I have no clue whatsoever how to move up and down which makes the mini game completely unplayable. Maybe arrow keys or the usual WASD could be used here?

These minor things apart I am totally enjoying this game! Even for a commercial release it would be great from what I have seen so far. The voice acting e.g. is wayyyy better than Face Noir which I finished last week. Now off to play some more!

Good point about the German keyboard. Come to think of it, it gets even wonkier on a French one...

In the Mage's game, you do not actually control your character. She moves all by itself, you can just cast spells to help her. So the controls are clicking on the spell buttons, or clicking on the 'step' button. It's a bit like the classic game Lemmings, really. HTH!

I wonder if anyone is using the numpad for combat? I find it much easier to use.

Actually, there's a "move" button in the lower left or something similar, as the valkyrie can only move the direction she is facing.

Yeah, ha ha. Just got back here to say that I so realized. So the keys which I THOUGHT were randomly moving left and right were simply STEP and UNDO.. D'OH! LOL

I do use the num pad, by the way. Mainly because of the "missing" Z, but I do indeed find it more convenient to have the keys aligned cleanly rather than slightly shifted like the rows of the main keyboard are.

Interesting thing is that quotes are requred in console, but not in Windows Explorer. I literally typed "Heroine's Quest.exe --setup" in the latter and that worked.

I think it's worth to remind that you need to set scaling filter to "Max nearest neighbour filter" in setup, or manually write "gfxfilter=max" in acsetup.cfg.

Oh no, I missed an awesome Christmas present! But I won't miss a fantastic 27th of December present!

I reserve the right to change my mind and certainly the right to give constructive feedback after I've played it; but I can't help but feel happy for you guys. We started working almost at the same time on our respective games, and I'm glad we both mark an important milestone almost at the same time. Yours is far more important than mine, though, and I can only imagine the relief and pride of this release.

You deserve the utmost respect for what you did out of pure passion.

I raise my glass to your success.

Because I never just run a game, I always open the setup first. Even if it isn't needed in theory to get the game to run properly, I usually set the scaling to something other than the default; for instance I'm playing the game in x4 window, but the max scaling is x5. And if I still had my old CRT, I'd probably want to set it to 85Hz.
Putting the filename in quotes to run the setup does work though, yes.

As for the Y/Z problem, a quick fix is to install English as additional input language, then press Alt-Shift during the game to make Windows switch to English.

They can't make it commercial seeing as how there are cameos from the Sierra classics, and some of the graphics are partially traced from copyrighted photographs :)

Anyway this might be my favorite AGS game of 2013 so far! I love the RPG aspects.

Came out of hiding on the forums just to tell you guys... your game is absolutely awesome! Had a chance to play a couple hours last night and can't wait to play more tonight! I love the game mechanics, and the overall quality is stunning! Fantastic work, you guys! :)
Probably my only (albeit minor and embarrassing) complaint are the heavy info dumps when talking to characters. Tons of complicated lore and character/location names for my simple, American mind to keep track of. It gets even harder for me when I talk to people like the court wizard, who makes a point of complicating everything he says. Again, minor, and probably reflects more poorly on my intelligence than the game itself. :P

Hi,

Congratulations on the release, I've been waiting for this since...well, around the 29th June 2009 I think :P

My download speeds from IndieDB were all over the place so I've thrown up another mirror at the below link, I'm afraid it's not got a swanky page like IndieDB but hopefully it will help even if it is purely a secondary mirror :)

Also I'd have gladly donated if not for the fact that it would be via PayPal...have you ever considered any alternatives? Wepay for example?

I've been playing this gem for a while now and there's only good stuff I can say about it.
You've captured the fantasy rpg mood completely and that's important to keep players "inside" your world. It worked for me.
I also like how you've structured you interface and interactions with objects and npc's, after a while it becomes intuitive and that's really good considering you're using the now old-right click to cycle verbs.
So far I'm enjoying the good music, graphics and quests while my character (mage) gets stronger and able to stay out in the woods longer.
It's been a great experience so far. Congrats to all the team at Crystal Shard.

Just beat the game as a Warrior.

My game stats just for fun:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:

Graphics

Graphics were fantastic! Usually you can "see" when a game is an amateur production due to there always being something slightly off with the perspective, lighting, shading or colour usage, but this was never the case here. All the backgrounds felt professional and beautiful. Svartalfheim looked slightly less interesting but Nidavellir more than made up for it. I also liked how the monsters were very diverse. For instance, the gulon is short and fat, the svartalf is thin, the jotunn is tall, etc.

I loved the visual cameos that I understood, from the obvious ones like the items in Sigrun's and Eitri's houses, right down to the less obvious ones like the Super Mario mushroom in Eitri's house (and Fremont's waterfall). I was more confused by the ones I didn't understand and could only guess were cameos, like the interdimensional bard, that... person... with the fishnet stockings, or the Imp.

The animations added a lot to the experience. The forest could have been boring fast but it didn't due to all the little animated animals and environments. There's one minor instance where the animations sort of let me down, especially since it affects a puzzle: Gandvik lake, which is supposed to be windy according to dialogue but which doesn't look much more windy than anywhere else.

Audio

The music was really good! I actually have no idea how many tracks there were, because they never felt intrusive, so I just enjoyed them without noticing the track changes and stuff. The real-world music you incorporated was also totally appropriate.

The sound effects were slightly less impressive. I didn't think the sounds of the weapon strikes were as "satisfying" and hard-hitting as they could be. But then again, I'm a fan of JRPGs and fighting games, where the sounds of the hits and attacks tend to be exaggerated, so maybe it's just a question of habits, aha.

The voicing was mostly fine. It served its purpose well in differentiating the characters and helping us familiarize with all those Nordic names and terms. I found Skrymir's voice the most entertaining.
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
On the downside, it's a shame Loki's appearance was optional. I liked his voice the most. He was much more impressive than Egther.

Story

The story was also very well done and focused. It really felt like a classic adventure game. It also actually felt like an adaptation of Norse mythos, rather than a generic Tolkien-esque game with mythologic names randomly thrown in for flavour. The story kept me interested because, as a fan of Norse mythology, I was wondering how you were going to depict Ragnarok.
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
When I finished the game, I was a bit disappointed that the Aesir didn't show up, but I realized them being constantly talked about but never seen by the humans is in tune with the point of view of the ancient Norse people. You stayed true to the Norse spirit even insofar as making Keira actually die in battle, and becoming an Einherjar. I was afraid you were not going to go beyond the usual "Hero(ine) walks away into the sunset while the people she's just saved celebrate", but I was pleasantly surprised.

One thing I really didn't like at all is the random time-travelling puzzle near the end. I thought it was totally out of place (in addition to being out of time lololol). At first I thought the final act was going to be set in that post-Ragnarok setting. That wasn't in the original myth but I thought, okay, well, this could be fun. But then the game backtracked and the whole thing ended up being a random puzzle that takes away from the immersion and just makes me think of the one in Curse of Monkey Island.

One minor thing I didn't like in the ending is that we hear Brynhild and Keira talk. It kinda took me out of that wonderful magical moment. The narration and semi-animated pictures were already perfect IMO. [For example, in one of the films based on the Arthurian mythos I'm pretty sure we see the wounded Arthur depart to Avalon without much words, if any, and that was very powerful.] I also would have preferred to fight Loki as the final boss instead of the less ominous (relatively-speaking) Egther.

Writing

The introduction sequence (up to you leaving Fornsigtuna for the first time) was a bit too wordy for me. I mean, I just installed the game and I want to go explore and do stuff, but instead some woman and some kid bombard me with terms and information that I just don't care about just yet. After that sequence though, the writing was very good. You did a good job of using all those Nordic terms without them ever being cheesy or incomprehensible.

I liked the use of different speech patterns for different characters, for the most part. Two I didn't like were Eitri and Aurvandel; they were kind of overdone. I feel sorry for the guy who voiced Aurvandel because I skipped probably over half of all the lines he recorded...

Some of the jokes however I feel were too out of place. The possibility of having Keira call herself a mighty pirate and reference Guybrush's story and stuff was honestly a bit too much for me. I know this is an RPG but it doesn't ever feel in-character for Keira to say that. On the upside, the jokes told by the narrator were all excellent.

Gameplay

The RPG aspects and battling are excellent and I had a lot of fun with it! I have a French keyboard so my keys don't match with the interface on-screen, but it wasn't too problematic (then again I played with the default difficulty). Some of the stats seem to go up too easily, comparatively, for instance endurance which goes up on its own and animal ken for which you can just spam-click any animal and see the number skyrocket.

I would have liked an option to discard items and to rest more than one hour. Changing the game speed through buttons would have been welcome too, because sometimes a cutscene happens before a battle and you don't get the opportunity to open the menu to change the speed.
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
As for the puzzles, I thought most of them were logical without being too obvious, but some were really frustrating. I mean, why can I freeze that ghost's food in Skrymir's challenge yet I could't burn it or put a caltrop in it or other stuff? Wasn't Skrymir watching anyway? And Andvari's sliding puzzle... seriously, a sliding puzzle? Overall, I think the puzzles involving animals were the best ones.

Overall

This may well be my favorite AGS game of 2013 :-D The production values are incredible, the story is original (it's based on something but the way it does it feels very fresh), the gameplay is addictive and technically-speaking very impressive, and the adventure long enough for a first playthrough to be satisfying yet not too long enough that you won't want to do a second playthrough after it. Oh, and the bonus material is the icing on the cake. More indie games should do that.

Have to post again to laud this. This is seriously one of the best games I have ever played. I often find myself playing for hours even if I just wanted to try some specific thing I thought of.
The entire implementation of movement is so satisfying, for instance switching from running to sneaking mid-movement by pressing S and clicking again, or jumping around to boost your stats just looks and plays incredibly well. So does occasional acrobatics; it's all so fluid you almost forget that it's just 2D sprites.

One tiny bug I found: in the Adventurer's Guild, after the note is on the closet, opening the closet's door makes the note hover in mid-air.

One thing I noticed regarding fights: dodging to the right makes her remain in that position if you hold down the key. But dodging left makes her move back immediately, and if you hold the button, she'll move to the side and back continuously. Is this intentional? Or was it meant to work like that for both directions? Or is dodging right supposed to not work like that?

Also a hint for people who end up getting knots in their fingers during fighting: using JoyToKey, I put the attack buttons on gamepad buttons and dodging on its left stick. Works very well and makes fighting so much easier.

Edit:
Game crashed on me:

Thank you all for the kind words :)

Khris - thanks for your notes. I've added them to our list of things to fix for v1.1. I haven't noticed the heroine moving back immediately when dodging left, though she might when she gets hit (she will flinch). As far as I know, keyboard should work correctly, so I will do some more checks when I get a bit of spare time.

I had a suspicion about the dodging and it turned out to be correct: my keyboard is German, and I switched it to English to move the Z key to the bottom left. I went back to the German layout and dodging suddenly worked fine. I'm using the gamepad anyway, so it's not even inconvenient anymore.
This should definitely not happen though, but it seems to be a DirectInput issue, so not your game's fault.

Couple of very minor issues found:

- Character's name on the stats page is written over an invisible button? When clicking around it I make the text lower a little ;)
- When receiving combat instructions from Hervor, you can cancel combat and continue dialog, but if you do that while Hervor voice is playing (tutoring) it will continue playing in background during following conversation until audio clip ends.

E: Also love random mid-eastern sequence in the town music. Was it intentional?

I'm glad you liked it! Do you mean the tune that plays on the pick your character, stats selection screen, and the Adventurer's Guild?  It has a Middle Eastern-sounding flourish starting at about the 50 second mark.  Honestly, I find it only vaguely Middle Eastern but, I liked how it sounded so I kept it in.  I suppose there's also the tune that plays when

Playing this now, and loving it! The QFG formula is one of my favorites, and this does the original proud. I'm loving all the little touches, like the varying weather (with aurora at night!) and ability to throw snow balls, the forest animals, townspeople walking about (and visiting each other! really helps sell them as a community), as well as the beautiful music and the basis in Norse mythology. The story, game mechanics, graphics and voice acting are for the most part at near-professional level. You should all be very pleased with yourselves!

I particularly liked the library, which is a relatively simple space, but really has a great atmosphere, with people wandering in and out, a harmless ghost, and all those tomes. And it looks beautiful.

A couple of points of some frustration:
-On a first playthrough, it's hard to know how to distribute skill points up front. I'm playing sorceress, and ditched climbing because I expected a levitation spell, for example. And without fast talking, there's no way to haggle effectively, so everything is so expensive. I also really wish I'd taken animal ken, just so I could interact with all the animals as I'm walking around. Might be nice with some hint in the manual about what the different skills are good for, and what can compensate for the weaknesses of each class.
-I find it really hard to earn money, and pretty much impossible in the early game. Until your resilience builds up (or you get some warmer clothes), you have to run back to town every five minutes, and as a sorceress without climbing (so no way to get over the city gates), that meant I couldn't really be out at night. But even if you spend a whole night fighting trolls, you might only earn 20 silver or so, so if you want to stock up on healing potions you'll have to spend days grinding. There was a point where I'd been playing for 4 hours without really getting any further, and I was getting pretty tired of it.

I find the pronunciation of the various Norse names and words very interesting and funny. Most are quite reasonable, like anglicized versions of they would sound in Swedish, but some (like "Munarvagir" and "Skrymir") are way off Scandinavian pronunciation. (Skrymir would sound more like "screamer" than like "scrye-meer".) I also find "Fornsigtuna" endlessly amusing, since it's literally "Ancient Sigtuna", meaning "where the town of Sigtuna used to be (in olden times)"; it's a little like a game set in pre-revolution Virginia where the characters go around referring to their town as "Colonial Williamsburg". ;) Oh, and another little nitpick: the founder of the Ylfing dynasty would not be Ylfing the First; he'd be "Ylf" (or more probably "Ulf"). Just like the Yngling family claimed descent from Ing (Frey).

Some (fairly minor) bugs:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
-In the adventurer's guild in Fornsigtuna, if you look at the seed of Idunn's apples on the wall, with Hervor present, she makes a comment along the lines of "Hoggthorn's Holt should not be frozen". This makes no sense whatsoever at the beginning of the game (and this is, after all, the starting screen), and makes it impossible to figure out what it even is you're looking at.
-On a few of the forest screens, some of the trees stop one pixel below the top edge of the screen. Presumably that sprite has been accidentally shifted down one pixel.
-If you cast Shadow in Aurvandel's study and your shadow walks down the stairs, it's not entirely covered by the walkbehind, so you can see it through the wall.
-I took some unstable ordnance from Sigrun's shop, but decided to put it back on the desk. At that point, I got stuck behind the counter and couldn't get out. (I have a savegame demonstrating this.)

Interesting! Now I'm curious what 'Munarvagir' should sound like :); I will need to check, but I didn't think it sounded dissimilar to what we were recommended (but it is all a bit of a blur now).

With Skrymir, it's a bit funny, but the linguist (who is Scandinavian) pronounced it more like 'Scru-mir', while the Danish voice actor for Skrymir actually originally did say 'Skree-mir'. In the end, we went with how it phonetically looked to us. In hindsight, I should have looked at a bunch of pronunciation clips, but I didn't think to check them at the time because I was so busy working with the voice actors on getting the recordings done in a timely manner and writing emails, and I didn't realise till much later that these pronunciations were readily available anyway.

I believe this is where we got Fornsigtuna from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornsigtuna
(I haven't read through Prose Edda myself).

As a sorceress, there is a safe place you can stay in the woods at night :) It should help you a little. We can look into tweaking rates in v1.1 easily; when we were testing, we thought money dropped at a good rate (but then we knew where we needed to go and what to do, and the most economical ways of getting things done), so it's good to get some fresh perspective.  (On the other hand, another player indicated that later in game, money becomes too easy, so finding a good balance there might be trickier).

Well, "Munarvagir" isn't immediately recognizable to me as a Scandinavian place name, but I'm guessing it's "Munarväg" in modern Swedish ("muhnarVEHG", in Norwegian more like "MOOnarvehg"). In any case, I would bet the primary stress should be on the "mu" or the "va", and don't think you'd ever stress the "-ir". (There's also a whole tone thing, but you can't be expected to mimic that in English.) Re Skrymir: In Scandinavian languages, "Y" usually has a value approximately of /û/ (as in French "lune"), somewhere between /u/ and /i/, but it varies a bit depending on context and dialect. So either "Screamir" or "Screwmir" would have been OK approximations in English. Anyway, I really respect the work you've done to ensure a decent degree of authenticity. These and a couple of others just stand out to me because most other words sound so right.

Although Fornsigtuna was originally just called Sigtuna, apparently you're right that it got the "Forn-" part much earlier than I thought, already shortly after the end of the Viking period. (But only after its role as royal base had moved to a "New Sigtuna". Which I guess is my point: "Fornsigtuna" implies that there's a current Sigtuna.)

And yes, I found that place to rest ultimately, but it took a long while to explore all the way to that corner of the map (because, again, I had to keep running back to town to warm up), and it didn't occur to me that I could sleep there until I saw a hint thread mention it. Oh well, it's not all supposed to be easy! I'm currently really enjoying a part of the game where there are jotunns, giants and muspells all over Jarnvidr and I'm so outclassed that I have to run away from every encounter. Fun! It's just that those different factors turned much of the early game into a bit of a slog.

Hmm I just have to comment on the money thing, although while playing the game it did feel like it was getting easier to get more money towards the end, I think this is mostly contributed to the fact that by the time the numbers in my coin purse got to the tripple digits, I had already bought most of the items that I wanted/needed (and I rarely bought potions... All in all, I think it just depends on how you play the game and perhaps the difficulty you're on? (I set my difficulty to the medium setting).

Also I forgot to mention this and I don't know if anyone else already had, but when I tried to buy the flame spell from Arunvadel the (what do you call it?) purchase box didn't show up until I clicked on the dialogue choice again, however it appeared behind the dialogue boxes, it didn't stop me from getting the flame spell, it was just slightly disorienting.

All right, finished as Sorceress! Stats (although I did look at hints, so I can't really take credit) and some comments/questions about the endgame and ending:

Add spoiler tag for Hidden:

The final bit, from the battles with Thrivaldi and Fenrir to the time-travel puzzles and the magic duel with Egther, were particularly excellent! It really felt like a proper climax to the game, exercising every aspect of the gameplay and offering a proper "boss battle" challenge. I got stuck at a couple of points in the duel (didn't realize there was another option than Shield to stop his ice bolt, and didn't think of Bless taking care of the arm), but the solutions were definitely fair if you gave them some thought. But man! By the time I get to the point where I know the potion-making recipes and have all the needed ingredients, the game is basically over, and then I don't even get to use them against Fenrir?  :~(

The time travel aspect, although great fun in its own right, seemed to come a little out of nowhere. Why does Egther just happen to have a time portal in his keep, when his plans have nothing to do with time travel? I don't think there's a source for this in Norse mythology either. (But isn't there something like it in one of the Kyrandia games? Was that the inspiration?) I think maybe it would feel more like a natural part of the story if it was more explicitly linked to the Norns somehow (since they represent past, present and future). I'm not sure this is the sort of detail you would consider changing after release, but what if the portal was in the form of a loom, for example? Or, simpler, just put some runes on it for Urth+Verthandi+Skuld, and maybe have the respective ones flash when the heroine goes through. Ah, just a thought...

Anyways...

Love the Conquest of the Longbow-esque ending where people step up to thank you! (Though I notice that the heroine broke the promise I gave, to give credit to Andvari's armor in situations like this. Bad form, heroine! (wrong)) I think I got everyone there to say something nice about me, even Ratatosk, with Snorri as the only exception (well, and Hervor, but she couldn't speak). I guess beating him in archery wasn't enough. Was I supposed to give him "his" gem after all? (I sold it to Regin instead.) There's no way to get praise from any of the Svartalfar, or the huldra, is there?

Looking at the early art in the bonus section, it's amazing how far it has come. Well done Corby!
So, thanks for a great game!

On a replay, I found the money much less problematic. I think it might just be that it's easy to buy stuff in the wrong order, and then be stuck until you can scrape together enough for what you really need. As for...

Regarding end game and people:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
No, Snorri doesn't speak up for you because shooting arrows isn't really important to speak about when praising someone. And the gem quest isn't really all that important. Definitely no way to get praise from the Svartalf as they can't go out during the day (plus I am sure that Andvari still holds grudges), and there's no reason the huldra would ever vouch for you (you took the jarl away from her after all!). I wonder if she'd have tried to enchant all the men at the celebration if she had been invited though :)

There's no way to get a good word from Snorri? That ungrateful SOB! Even after I paid him a 100-silver bribe! >:(

Then is this the full list of people you can get praised by (this from memory, so not necessarily the right order)?

Jarl Ylfing (saved from huldra)
Heimi (saved from Svartalfheim, etc.)
Volund (same)
Aurvandel (defeated haugbui)
Arngrim (healed)
Kraka (better life prospects)
Lithrasir (reunited couple)
Liff (same)
Ratatosk (rehabilitated)
Sigrun (at peace with husband)
Librarian (saved cat)
Sigurd (saved town, reunited with lover)
Brynhild (general thanks, in an obviously repurposed line of dialogue)

I think the only other character from Fornsigtuna or Munarvagir missing is Regin, and I suppose that's because he can't be out by day. (You know, I played the whole game and didn't realize that's why he was never around in the daytime!)

Yep, that's the full list.

Why would Snorri want to confess in front of the jarl that he accepted bribes? :) You don't need to resort to bribery by the way.

He could just say something general about my generous nature. Bottom line: I want that praise, dammit! Everyone going up there and thanking me, and that bastard just keeps his mouth shut? It ain't right! (laugh)

The other option is to have Kraka pardoned by the Jarl, yes? Yeah, I knew that, but I was sick of freezing all the time, so I went for the cloak instead. (And I assume I could have got a higher honor score if I'd declined the award in favor of the widows and orphans instead.)

I should say that I really like how the game underplays some of these beats, like Snorri being corrupt (I always suspected him of somehow poisoning Arngrim), or the ambiguity of whether Fafnir or Regin (or, most likely, neither, if I remember the Nibelungen story correctly) is in the right in their feud.

Sensible idea. Might take a *lot* of snowballs though and with some bad luck the beast will just build an igloo out of them, having tea while you run out of snow. But at least you won't be cold anyboar.

We're going to tweak that a bit in v1.1. However, if you're a warrior, you probably don't have throwing skill anyway, so you will never become good at throwing. Also, snowballs usually aren't very effective at killing any animal :)

What a game!

I finally got a chance to play it over the last few days, and it was amazing.  I completed the game as a Rogue, which was quite a bit of fun.  After looking at some hints, it seems I missed a few things here and there, and I'll be trying to get closer to 500 points next time (I got 426 this time).

The story was great, and kept me interested throughout the game.  The art and animation were fantastic.  The scenery is just beautiful, I really enjoyed wandering around the landscape.  I loved the characters and dialogue, and most of the voice work was wonderful and drew me in.  I loved the music, it was always appropriate and it stayed in my head over the days I was playing.  The enemies were all great.  I didn't change the difficulty level at all, so combat wasn't too hard, but some enemies were still somewhat challenging.  Also, I'm glad you chose to replicate this combat system, as it was the most fun version of combat from the Quest for Glory series.  Leveling up was a lot of fun, and I spent a few days of gameplay working on increasing my skills and stats.  I ended up with every skill I had maxed out.  I'd also like to point out how good the programming was in this game.

There were a lot of great references in this game.  The ending reminded me of the final scene of Trial By Fire, which I thought was a great touch.  Although, reading through earlier posts here, I don't think I was able to help enough people!  I'll definitely be trying a little harder next time, and this is certainly a game that can be played through multiple times.

Overall, this was a tremendously satisfying gaming experience.  It feels like a love letter to the Coles, definitely comparable to the Quest for Glory games.  Great job to everyone involved, and thank you all so much for sharing this wonderful gift with us!

A few comments / issues:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
After a while, I found money easy to come by.  One reason for this is that, as a Rogue, I was able to steal the letter back from Liff to get the reward many consecutive times.  Not sure if this was intended, but I enjoyed it.
In the room with the dragon skeleton, I'm not sure if I was supposed to fight that many Brigands.  It looked as though they were supposed to be other enemies that glitched into Brigands, but I may be wrong.
In Eitri's house, the mirror reflection of a Troll was visible outside of the mirror if I went too deep into the room.
I had trouble in Sigurd's room, and was never actually able to get into his bedroom.  Nothing would prevent the sword from falling, but a glitch allowed me to break into the chest from the other side of the door.

I loved seeing Uhura, Arne the Aardvark, Keapon Laffin, and Cedric the Owl.  Also, the carved Leopard and other various items scattered about.  These made for great Easter Eggs.

I was a little sad to see the ending.  It makes the prospect of a sequel look unlikely, and to be honest I was really hoping for a series here.  That said, I understand why it was done, and it works with the story.  I'll definitely be keeping my eye on Crystal Shard's future endeavors into Adventure RPG hybrid games.

Let's be honest: this an amazing game, with a very high level of finish, and very well debugged.

Having said that, I get very frustrated over my non-English keyboard.

Here is my experience (playing on 1.0)
- I don't like playing windowed, so I run the shortcut "run in fullscreen". It fails on my tiny notebook, because for some reason the game requests a 960x600 resolution. Dang.
- I go to the game's folder. No standard setup.exe file. Dang dang.
- I put one here myself. Here I notice that some fancy "nearest neighbour" filter is used. I run the game in regular 320x200 fullscreen, no filter. Crossing fingers and hoping it won't cause a bug later on.
- Combat training : I need a non-English keyboard mapping for my non-English keyboard (A<-->Z, Q<-->W)
- I go to the settings of the game : it's not possible to change the keys. Dang dang dang.
- I decide to use Monkey's trick: just use Windows' language button in the task bar. PROBLEM: the game is full screen. And that button applies to the window that has the focus. When you minimize a fullscreen app, it loses the focus. So I can't play with a non-English keyboard if the game plays fullscreen. I eventually had to look up the Windows' shortcut online: I press Left-shift+Left-Alt in-game, and it works. But not everybody knows that this solution exists.

=============

A tiny unrelated complaint : Everything in the game has a cooltip (when you hover over any button, it tells you what it's for) EXCEPT all the buttons in the main toolbar, at the top of the screen: rest, spell selection, options, etc. And their function is not obvious from the icon (I didn't dare clicking for 10 seconds, thinking: "what if this one is for casting a useless spell that will drain all my mana in the first minute of the game? I'd need to save the game just to test them".

You get the idea. Cooltips would be cool for those. They're not absolutely necessary, but consistency is always appreciated.

Really cool. Beause even the Windows Language Bar is not really a solution: the combat keys work, but then the keys are messed up the other way around in the game's notepad.

I loved the visual cameos ... was more confused by the ones I didn't understand and could only guess were cameos, like the interdimensional bard, that... person... with the fishnet stockings, or the Imp.
Most of those are from earlier Crystal Shard games :D  and fishnet guy is the winner of a contest we ran.

Small things that feel weird in this game with otherwise great immersion. They break the suspension of disbelief, and are utterly easy to fix:

- The pick that can't be used for climbing up ice: you have a pick. There are at least 3 places where you'd like to climb up a frozen surface: Below the ice flowers, below the tower on the shore, and (possibly, but less likely) up the boulders where you were left for dead. In one of the cases, the character even says "the places where you could put your hands are made too slippery by the ice". So you use your pick. And you have this utterly annoying message saying "you like to make little holes everywhere?".

- The flame spell that sometimes melts stuff, sometimes doesn't: The same message causes the same confusion: "the places where you could put your hands are made too slippery by the ice". In several other places, the flames spell is used precisely to melt the ice. Here, it isn't. But with no explanation. Just the generic spell animation, but no effect. A clearer message would be cool.

- The starving character who cannot eat meat: When you're a sorcerer, you kill piles of wolves. Yet you can't get any meat. I understand you need a special skill for that. But the message "there's nothing of interest on this dead wolf" is very frustrating. There should be a short explanation, especially when you're about to starve to death. By the way, same thing for the prisoners' food in the keep: "yuck, I don't like that food, so instead I'll just die". Wut?

- The magician who has no interest whatsoever in the progress of the quest he gave you: No matter how close you are to killing the haugbui (and as you know, there are many steps to achieving that), the wizard has no new dialog about that topic, until you actually deal with the "final" object. Even when you give it to him. As you've seen in the hints and tips thread, it confused other people. He doesn't need to give you clues. But as it is now, it's very puzzling.

- The character who isn't able to make a report with words, but only by showing the contents of her pockets: There are several quests that cannot move on until you give the relevant object to the relevant person, even when that object is merely a clue, and you could instead talk about it in the dialog: "Hey, I found this, let's talk about it". Sometimes you even forget that you have the object, and are just eager to report that you found something. But the dialog option just isn't there. But I understand that this could just be a peculiar puzzle design choice, and it requires some work to fix, so it's up to you.

- The confusing prupose of the eitur: There I was, in front of someone who looks like he's almost dead but not completely, incapacitated by a magical spell (the walkyrie lying in the circle of fire). I look at the eitur, and it says exactly: "it's meant for reviving someone who is incapacitated by magical effects, provided they're not dead yet". But not that someone. It's for another someone, who doesn't look like a someone.

All those remarks are to make the game closer to perfection. I could write entire paragraphs about how good the experience is, how much I got immersed into the game's universe, and how at some points I shared the actual feelings of the character (like it should be in every good RPG). Great game.

First of all, now that I've finished it (as the sorceress, at least), let me say to the developers: As someone who counts the Quest for Glory series amongst his favourite games, this is a wonderful game. It's well-constructed, interesting, with clever and well-integrated puzzles and good use of its character classes. I also love the use of Norse mythology (although I'm a little bit annoyed at one of my favourite undead -- the draugr -- being played as a near-zombie yet again :P). Very well done indeed!

Thank you very much for it -- and for releasing it for free! ^_^

I won't say that it's beyond improvement -- I do have a few points that I think could have been handled better (in particular in providing clues to certain interactions) -- but overall it is an excellent game, I do think.

I agree with this, I believe, and would like to add that I found the Flame Aura's effect to be a little inconsistent: sometimes it acts as a source of heat (as in protecting the player from cold, or in heating or burning objects), but in at least one case it somehow protects the player from heat.

Actually, as I recall, you can get meat from the wolves -- you just have to use a tool on the wolf in order to do so. However, I also seem to recall that I only know this because I happened on the information in a forum thread. I think that it would likely help a lot to at the last include a clue in the response given when the player attempts to "use" a dead wolf; something along the lines of: "There's nothing of interest on the dead wolf. The animal's meat looks edible, if you have something with which to cut or hack it apart."

You will probably enjoy two recently-released games. Heroine’s Quest is an adventure / RPG hybrid in the spirit of Quest for Glory, and it’s free. Several of our backers have played it. They say it is fun, beautiful, and very challenging. I think I downloaded it, but I haven’t tried playing it. The screen shots look amazing. I'm happy to hear that we're getting recommended by the Coles themselves, wow!

Small things that feel weird in this game with otherwise great immersion. They break the suspension of disbelief, and are utterly easy to fix:
That's one of the reasons why we're working on v1.1, yes. In particular, Aurvandel not responding to the Haugbui quest is a bug; there is actually a recorded line for him that doesn't turn on properly in v1.0.

It's interesting how one player comments that an ice pick should be usable as an ice axe, whereas another player comments that it doesn't make sense that a battle axe can be used as a tree chopping axe. Well, we have to make choices somewhere. Sorry, but it just gets too complicated for players if certain kinds of food can only be eaten if you're hungry enough; earlier beta versions had different types of food provide a different amount of satiety, and it turned out that was confusing for some of our test players.

Quote
There I was, in front of someone who looks like he's almost dead but not completely, incapacitated by a magical spell (the walkyrie lying in the circle of fire). I look at the eitur, and it says exactly: "it's meant for reviving someone who is incapacitated by magical effects, provided they're not dead yet". But not that someone. It's for another someone, who doesn't look like a someone.
Brynhild is merely asleep; the trick is getting past the flames. That's easily fixed with another message, of course.

I found the Flame Aura's effect to be a little inconsistent: sometimes it acts as a source of heat (as in protecting the player from cold, or in heating or burning objects), but in at least one case it somehow protects the player from heat.
If it didn't protect you, it would harm you whenever you cast it :)

If it didn't protect you, it would harm you whenever you cast it :)

On the other hand, the spell has already been shown to be able to heat to varying degrees -- warming one object and burning another, for example -- and it's a reasonably common trope (I think) that spells don't harm their caster (at least until they're in some way "released" or reflected), just as the lightning spell doesn't burn the caster's hand in battle.

I do see your reasoning, and do feel that it's fair enough -- I just feel that the logic doesn't necessarily apply with magic, and wasn't conveyed in-game, making its use as a puzzle solution a little non-obvious.

Thinking of spells, I'd like to add that I had a ton of fun with the lightning spell in battle once I got it. It's entirely possible that it's overpowered -- I seem to recall that I killed Fenrir in next to no time, for example -- but I don't care. It was late in the game anyway, and it was so very fun to just blast my enemies with sorcerous lightning... :D

This is ever so slightly off-topic, but I thought it might be interesting...

I understand and appreciate the choice to make the look of the towns and the general design of things QFG-like (i.e. standard "fantasy", based on late-medieval/early-modern European technology and design), but at the same time it feels a bit odd that these Norsemen, living in a particular historical period and a particular geographical region, don't seem to live the way Norsemen did. So I thought this might be a nice comparison for what a town like Fornsigtuna might have looked like in reality:

If the Flame Aura spell didn't protect you, it would harm you whenever you cast it :)
In the hints&tips thread, there is a long post by someone, explaining why it didn't seem immediately obvious to more than one player, and I completely agree with the points raised there. In a nutshell: in every game, magic has its own logic (it's not the real-world logic), and in particular, most offensive spells don't hurt the player -- but that doesn't mean they can protect him. Moreover, one could imagine that the Flame Aura spell used on oneself is just set to "warm", and that the flame animation is just there for decoration.

Ok, that was just to react to the previous discussion, but my reason to post today is: Do you intend on uploading the OST somewhere? (e.g. youtube). I just love the Munavagir tune. It's so relaxing.

It's an aura of flame/fire, so when she casts it, the aura around her is hot (or warm). If the heroine made her flame aura strong enough that it was the same temperature as the real fire, and the magical fire isn't burning her to soot, then there's no reason why the real fire will impinge past her magical fire.

But you know, at least the logic in the game is consistent regarding fighting other fiery enemies (I'll check whether we have a proper message for trying to use it on the fire circle in v1.1). Also, magical fire isn't real, so I don't see why the game needs to follow the 'rules' set by other games or stories :).

We will be releasing the OST with v1.1.

But that's just arguing why the game doesn't have to make Flame Aura protect against fire, it doesn't argue that it doesn't make sense that it does.
I didn't mean to imply that it should follow the logic of other games -- my apologies if I gave that impression. ^^;

What I meant, I believe, is rather that since the functioning of spells doesn't follow a single logic (and especially since at least one common thread runs counter to it), the logic that you use -- while quite reasonable, I do think -- doesn't go without saying. In other words, my objection isn't to the logic itself, but that it isn't conveyed to the player.

In all fairness, I feel that I should add -- given how vehemently I'm arguing this -- that I don't think that this is a major flaw in the game at all, which I believe I've already stated that I found to be overall wonderful. It's a small issue, in what I think that I recall to have been a side-quest, and which doesn't apply overmuch to any of the other spells or puzzles (that I recall offhand). Please don't take my arguing as a major criticism of the game, or the puzzles in general (or even the use of the spells, which I very much enjoyed overall).

It's an aura of flame/fire, so when she casts it, the aura around her is hot (or warm). If the heroine made her flame aura strong enough that it was the same temperature as the real fire, and the magical fire isn't burning her to soot, then there's no reason why the real fire will impinge past her magical fire.
That logic doesn't necessarily hold, it seems to me: after all, magical fire might simply not burn its caster, or the flames that surround the character might be at a different temperature to the effect applied to an external object (and indeed might just be for show).

By similar logic, I should be able to use the lightning spell to protect at least my hand from fire -- after all, lightning can get incredibly hot, and the lack of damage to my character when casting it should then imply that the spell protects at least the nearby body parts.

Again, I'm not saying that the logic doesn't hold in this case, just that the fact that it applies isn't necessarily apparent, and isn't strongly conveyed in-game.

Quote

That's fair enough, and I'm glad to read it (given the lack of tone in text, I'll add that I mean that sincerely). In my own case I think that I largely stopped using Flame Aura in battle after a certain (fairly early) point since it didn't seem as useful as I'd hoped (save against vargs, which were weak enough to defeat without it by that stage), and didn't think to try it later. Again, similarly to my not thinking to try it in the puzzle I doubt that I would have thought to try it as a defence against fire attacks. (The placement of the key that activated it may also have played a part in my dropping the spell from my usual oombat responses, I think; but then I may simply have not found a good arrangement for my hands on the key layout.)

Firstly....awesome game. In fact, the word "awesome" cannot even begin to covey how great this game is!

Added to this, the fact that it is FREE is absolutely amazing considering the years of work I must assume went into this project (if you got it made in less than a year then my jaw has officially just dropped)...

Just finished it as Rogue but found a bug right at the end after the credits were done:

Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
The screen where is says "One fateful day she is in battle..." the game crashes with a transparency bug concerning a GUI. It said something about "GUI must be set to 100 transparency" or some such...I will go back and replay the ending in a bit and see if it reoccurs...I hope not, as I assume that after this point we get to see the Heroine's final entry into Valhalla...

Actually, no. She enters a fierce battle with the Valkyrie herself. And she wins. The Valkyrie dies in battle, which makes a second Valkyrie arrive to take the first one to Valhalla. Complete mess.

Update now available

When Heroine's Quest was released in December, it received many positive reactions. As our game was played by many more people than our internal testing team, some issues came to light. We have worked on fixing these, and as the result, version 1.1 of Heroine's Quest is now available. We hope you enjoy this update, and thank you all for your interest and support!

Unfortunately, saved games from v1.0 cannot be used in v1.1, although your completion records can be copied. You'll have to decide whether to complete your game on v1.0 or start from the beginning in v1.1 (or complete your current class in v1.0 and try a different class in v1.1). However, we recommend that you restart if you've made it to Svartalfheim without reclaiming your items from the thieves, or if you've failed too many of the vouches in Munarvagir as a sorceress. These situations may lead to a dead end in v1.0, but they can no longer occur in v1.1. If you have further questions, please ask.

Changes to gameplay:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
The control panel now has a button to redefine the keys used for combat.
The game now includes a setup utility that can be used to select window size and toggle fullscreen mode.
Regin will now give Gram only to a warrior heroine, not to a rogue. However, the sorceress can buy daggers now.
You can no longer enter the thieves' lodge by just entering the house and using the sword; that was never the intended solution.
You can no longer advance to Svartalfheim before dealing with the thieves' lodge, because later events assume that you've done this.
Liff will now pay you for extra pieces of willow bark, and Sigrun will pay for varg hides. However, stealing an item and then selling it back to the same character will no longer work.
Brynhild's and Skrymir's dialog about honor has been changed to clarify that bragging or telling tall tales is not considered dishonorable to a viking.
Use the hotkey 'N' to view the notepad, if you're carrying it.
Hints have been added to several puzzles that people indicated having trouble with.
We've done some rebalancing of the training rates of certain skills, as well as the amount of food and money present in the game.
To prevent dead end situations, certain items cannot be placed in a chest or otherwise abandoned, and certain locations cannot be entered while you're missing crucial items. For the same reason, if you lose Regin's chest you can now retrieve it. Conversely, you can no longer use the figurine to teleport out of certain plot events.
And fixes for every bug reported in this forum, including but not limited to the crystal lock glitch, the rogue's final battle without poison, the game hanging when asking Lithrasir for a drink, Lithrasir not following you to the holt, Aurvandel leaving while you're using the telescope, the crash if you throw too many daggers in the same room, giving the chest to Regin if you already have the quest reward, Sigyn leaving the room too fast, the sorceress not getting points for the mirror image, the 'cheater' death message in the lodge, characters being hidden if you skip visiting the jarl, and Heronus disappearing.

Made cross-class skills more useful:
Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
Animal Ken: can be used to calm dogs and cats when sneaking around.
Herbalism: increased chance of getting two potions from alchemy, and you now get a scroll that lists all ingredients, and you can steal some of these from other alchemists if needed.
Stealth: increased chance of avoiding random encounters, and you can now capture Heronus with very high skill.
Thievery: warrior and sorceress with this skill can find lockpicks in Thrivaldi's cave, and can join the Lodge with only this skill.
Mead of Poetry can now be used to learn an extra skill.

Quick question to the creators:

Deliberate or coincidental censorship?

Add spoiler tag for Hidden:
When you cut the head off the swamp monster the text window pops up instantly, hiding the decapitation from view. I was just (morbidly) curious if this was done on purpose to cut down on gore? And also: was a gory animation of the decapitation prepared but then cut (no pun) from the game for the same reason?

I want to report two minor bugs (steam version 1.2):
1. At the city gates there's character scaling issue: it seems like the top/bottom scaling levels are swapped. One thing certain: when you approach the gates walking up, the character suddenly increases in size.
2. Ctrl+D combination works and displays some debug info.

Script link failed: Runtime error: unresolved import 'AGSteam.SetAchievementAchieved^1'
IIRC this might mean that game is looking for AGSSteam plugin, but cannot find one. Do you provide any stub plugin for non-steam version? (this question is for game authors)

Oh...odd. What OS do you have?
I use a fully patched Windows XP on a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop) on Mac OS X.
I have some AGS games for Windows installed (The Samaritan Paradox i.e.), without problems.

Hm okay ty. Samaritan won't have any Steam code in it if you're talking about the drm-free copy. But that's not to say the version of Heroine's Quest doesn't.

Can you confirm your game folder (usually in program files) has AGSteam.dll and steam_api.dll in it? I just tried removing them and then I get the same error you originally reported.

If not, download from the link again/re-install, both those files should be there. If they're not being installed into that folder let me know (fairly positive they should be). Also slim chance (if they ARE in the games folder) the folder itself being "Read only" might affect it so may want to try turning that on and off.

I have removed AGSteam.dll and steam_api.dll. Same error message after starting Heroine's Quest.exe....

Huh? No my point was they need to be IN the folder, not removed from it! If those files ARE in the folder and it still doesn't work, well, you have something funky going on... not sure what to suggest then beyond - try it another machine? To see if it still happens.

It is possible that you have a DLL conflict: that is, somewhere on your computer you have an earlier version of AGSteam.dll, and AGS tries to read that one instead of the more recent one (which should be in your Heroine's Quest folder). Can you run a search on your computer for files named AGSteam.dll, and see what it turns up? The dll you need should be dated April 6th, 2014; earlier versions do not contain the achievement functions.

I solved the problem thanks to the last post
My XP SP3 computer returned the exact same error with the steam dl
I simply installed the AGS editor dated 9/2/2014 and then tried running the game again
Worked perfect

Hello.

I have the same problem with agsteam.dll.

Only the "script link failed" message is displayed at the very end of installation.

I did search fo agsteam.dll files, but the only one I have is in Heroine's folder.

I am using Windowx XP SP3. I've downloaded the game from two official sources Crystal Shard lists on its website. Except for Steam one, as one has to have steam account to download games.

Any solution?

@eMTe:
Here's a zip containing AGSteam.dll + steam_api.dll, taken from my copy of Heroines Quest v1.2.4, the official up-to-date Steam version.
Both dll files should be in the folder containing also 'Heroine's Quest.exe'.

Hmmm... I don't really understand what we're aiming at here. You have sent me (thank you for effort!) two files that I already have in the folder. Should I replace both? Done. Doesn't work.

Why does the game run steam client at all, btw? If it's officially free. Isn't there some bypass of this message?

Price doesn't determine it... Steam copies include achievements, at the least, which has to utilize agsteam.dll* .. Therefore developers typically have a build that's separate from the main or "DRM-free" version. This is the same for any game on Steam made in AGS that has to in some way, utilize something the Steam client does. There's additional code in the build. Of course, it's quite possible to put the game up sans Steam code, but that isn't the case here, nor with many AGS games that have a build on Steam.

The flip side of course, is whether someone is distributing the Steam-code version as their main/DRM-free version. It can and generally will work, but that's still a bit of a distribution boo-boo. It's best to keep the steam code and files out of that copy. That said, it's an understandable oversight even I've made it in the past. You won't find many discussions on the boards about it, and it's only in recent years I've explicitly split my builds up to the 2 forms, but from here on, I'd always say it's best to keep your Steam version for Steam and leave the files and code out for your internet download version.

So, you mention having it from Crystal Shard's website but still have an issue? It sounds like Radiant perhaps has up the Steam build as his DRM-free version. I'm not sure what the copy on my site has (screen7.uk > free) version 1.2.1, maybe Radiant knows about this error or at least, can point you to a build which doesn't have Steam code or the dll in it (and me please!!).

* I wonder, is this meant to mean "AGS Team" or "AGS Steam" (with spelling error) ? or "AG Steam" ? It's been bugging me for years :P

All of that said, agsteam.dll isn't part of the installation. It is utilized when you run the game. So if you're having this issue during installation itself, it might be something else entirely? If it seems to mostly install, it's often worth trying the "Verify Integrity Of Game Files" in properties > local files in Steam, which should detect an inconsistent installation and try to re-acquire the problem file(s). Though it sounds like you're trying to play it without Steam, so outside of Steam, it could be an issue down to whomever created an installation file for it?

"Script link failed" is a well known AGS error, displayed when game cannot load up plugin. It usually also mentions which plugin function it failed to link to, which may be important to know if the game uses more than one plugin.

If it is definitely related to agssteam.dll, there was already a discussion about it failing to load here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44712.msg636548630#msg636548630
Usually the issue seems to be related to missing Windows components, that are required for DLL to load up.
Several posts down that thread plugin's developer posted an updated version of plugin that supposedly works better and has less requirements.

Cool. Sounds like the Steam build is the drm-free build also, then. This problem is only going to repeat, the solution, rather than having each individual find and sort out these problem files, is just not distribute them in the first place ;)

Hello.

I have the same problem with agsteam.dll.

What version of Heroine's Quest are you playing?

I have downloaded the version provided by Frodo (Screen 7 website). The only change is that error message doesn't appear at the end of installation, only when I try to run the game.

Also, both agsteam and steam_api dlls are present, so I don't think it's Steam-free version.

Anyway, what do I do now?

I've downloaded and installed C++ 2015 and RC3 update Crimson Wizard links to. I get the same error message.

Dave Gilbert in further posts says that this solution had worked for some people and for some hadn't.

The topic you link to becomes all the more confusing later, because monkey says about windows DLL downloads which "avoid the need for any particular C++ runtime to be installed". So the problem may not be C++-related after all?

If this is the wrong topic for this discussion, please point me to correct one (the one from link maybe?), I don't intend to spam in an otherwise general Heroine's Quest topic.

I won't be playing HQ very soon, of this I am sure though. :(

The funny thing is, I remember downloading the game right when it was first released, installing it and running for a while. I had no time to play it though and removed it from hd. But I do remember it had worked.

I will avoid discussing C++ runtime here, that would add to general confusion.

Radiant, I think you may need to find out which of the newest dlls to use with your game, from the monkey0506's folder he referenced in his post (https://bitbucket.org/monkey0506/ags2clientstub/downloads/). I cannot give any advices here because I do not know how many of these are required for HQ. Also I never tested any of these myself.

So eMTe, could you please download this test build and see if it runs for you? This doesn't include music or speech, but you can copy *.vox from your earlier build if you want. This is just to test if it fixes the "script link failed" error. Thanks!

http://crystalshard.net/test/Testbuild.zip

I've had the same problem (Script link failed: Runtime error: unresolved import 'AGSteam.SetAchievementAchieved^1'), found this forum, and tried the Testbuild.
The result, when trying to start Heroine's Quest from the Testbuild folder, is:
---------------------------
Illegal exception

An exception 0xC0000005 occurred in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x100011BC ; program pointer is -23, ACI version 3.3.0.1162, gtags (0,0)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and post the details on the AGS Technical Forum.

Most versions of Windows allow you to press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

An error file CrashInfo.dmp has been created. You may be asked to upload this file when reporting this problem on the AGS Forums. (code 0)

Do you have any advice for me? (Except "get a newer computer", please.)

Well, we stopped looking into this because Emte was the only person experiencing this issue and he hasn't been on the forums for almost half a year now. The current answer is that we do not officially support Windows XP. I'll pass your error message along to Monkey0506, he may be able to figure something out.
