Hi everyone ;-D

I'm from Belgium and I'm designing a funny and old-school point and click adventure game for PC and Mac.

Here's the pitch:
After a 10-year quest, Lancelot and his fellow Gawain have found the Holy Grail! Immediately informed, King Arthur runs to meet the most valiant knights of the Round Table. While their king brings them fortune and fame, Lancelot and Gawain celebrate their victory over a few beers. The next morning, Lancelot wakes up in his underwear in a gay bar. The keeper tells him that he has lost the Holy Grail playing cards and Gawain has been kidnapped by environmental activists. If he does not want to be killed by Arthur, Lancelot has to get back the Grail and his companion in arms before the king of Britain discovers what happened.

I've started this thread on the AGS forum to introduce you the game's developpement. I will be extremely glad to get your comments, advices and suggestions. My goal is to provide you the funniest point and click I can.

If you have questions about the sorywriting, the making of the artworks, the code stuff, the list of all psychoactive drugs consumed to craft the puzzles and the 'creative' businness plan behind the game financing (and yes, all the rumours about the offshore accounts and the ties with the Russian mafia you read on the Internet are true!), feel from to drop me a comment. I'll make my best to reply the most sincerely I can.

If you want to test the game, a beta is coming very soon. I'll give a download link on this forum. Or if it's handier for you, I'll tweet the link on @Lancelot_game

Thanks ;-D

Jean-Baptiste

QuoteVery Important (although boring) Legal Stuff

The European Commercial Court of Justice (ECCJ), held on 8th February 2014 in Brussels (Belgium), stated that:

  • The author of the video game called "Lancelot's Hangover" is no more allowed to include in his playful-oriented computer program any puzzles that can be solved in a logical manner. The player, to progress through the game, must always use, one by one, all the objects in the inventory on all the different objects and characters within the game (and if possible, several times). In addition, only websites in Serbo-Croatian language will be willing to publish a text walkthrough (which must first be encrypted using the SHA-512 algorithm).
  • The author of the video game "Lancelot's Hangover" will also break any contacts with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un by 23th June 2014 and will provide a urine sample, every Tuesday morning, at The European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) until 1st January 2017 inclusive.

Are the screenshots actually "in game" shots?  I don't see any cursor or GUIs (aside from what looks like an empty inventory on the left)?

Also, this is being made in AGS right?

declerfayt

Hi Darth Mandarb and thanks for your post ;-D

  • These screenshots were composed with Photoshop during preprod, but the assets in game will be the very same. Only the GUI will be a bit updated.

  • Yep. The game is made with AGS, and the in-game sequences during the trailer video has been taken from my computer screen while playing (even the thunder background!). The opening church plan and the 'VGA graphics' and logo plans of the trailer were made with AfterEffects thought.

Downloading the demo now...

Reminds me a lot of the animations in Monty Python and The Holy Grail already!

7 seconds left of download so...

I'm gonna bravely run away!

declerfayt

Wow, Monty Pyhtons! That's very flattering ;-D

Feel free to tell me what you think of Lancelot, Mandle. I will be glad to know what do you think about :)

Hey declerfayt,
happy to see the work is going on well.

I downloaded and played and It's REALLY funny. I "LOLled" a lot on some sentences.

Well it's a kind of long prologue, very well done and very funny.
Just one point: Atm interactions consist of dialogues only, it would be great if the demo could show a bit more of thegame mechanics, such as interaction of the player on objects and hotspot, inventory and so on.

But still a great work.

selmiak

There is a lot of funny dialoge in it, but I couldn't get to the end as the font is hard to read, but fitting to the overall theme and way too much dialoge and too little playeraction besides clicking on a dialoge line.
Also the headbanging distracted me, just moving lips will do the trick better imho.

Kasander

Great, I was waiting for news about Lancelot's Hangover since you've announced it.

Having re-watched MP&tHG only yesterday after a few years break I second what Mandle said. Gilliam's animations made me instantly thinking of Lancelot's Hangover :) As I said before, the visual style of your game is spot on and I can only applaud the decision. Well, I've downloaded the beta and will surely try it over the weekend.

EDIT: By the way, I'm not the most percipient person around but being fresh after MP&tHG I've just noticed the title of this thread :D It's The Title Who Says THE WORD

declerfayt

Thanks AprilSkies, selmiak and Kasander for your comments! ;-D

This first beta was mostly made to introduce the game's humour. The gameplay itself, with the funny puzzles/interactions with objects/events, will be presented in the second beta I'm working on right now. It's planned to be out by the end of the year (probably October).

Terry Gilliam's animations in Monty Python's Flying Circus is indeed a huuuuuuuuuuuuge influence for Lancelot's Hangover animations. It's funny to watch and quick to do when you work solo on a project.

About the headbanger speaking animations, I understand it can distract while reading the dialogs. My objective for the moment is finishing the second beta and its gameplay, but I'll try to fix those speaking animations for the final release :)

Once again, thanks a lot for your feedbacks! ;)

Hey declerfayt,

as I said, I did play it over the weekend. I've just sent you PM with some feedback. I hope it helps. It would take too much space here, besides I think it belongs more to Critics' Lounge than to the game thread.

Well, I'm waiting for the next Beta then! Hopefully this beauty of a game will deliver us a couple of puzzles next time :)

declerfayt

Thanks Kasander ;-D Very interesting thoughts indeed! I replied it by PM.

Bavolis

I love the visual style of this game! It's kind of a medieval South Park. The Monty Python link does make sense, but I find it's got a style of its own that feels like TV animation from that time period, if they'd had animation. Or TVs.

My personal opinion - I'd back off on all the in-jokes about adventure games (refs to Lucasarts games, etc). You've got something really unique here and you don't need them. In fact, they could end up causing you legal problems in the long run if you're mentioning them by name. I'd also find an editor/proofreader to make sure the more sensitive subjects (like gay jokes) are coming through as funny rather than offensive in English. There's a fine line.

Eager to see a more playable version!

declerfayt

Thanks for the very nice post Bavolis - and sorry for my very late reply :)

Indeed, the in-jokes about classic adventure games kill the player's immersion. A few jokes could be fine, but I agree there were too much of them in the first beta. The forthcoming version will be lighter with those kind of jokes :)

The whole storyboard of Lancelot's Hangover is finally finished!

Everthing is on the walls: the puzzles, the story, the cutscenes, the characters. All I need to do now is finishing all the drawings, wire the whole thing into AGS, make a bit of code - and the game is done! :)

As a bonus, here's some brand new drawings from the game!

I see that instead of putting down some more or less abstract percentage stats, you're measuring your work progress by the number of emptied bottles :-D
I'm guessing the release date is near, as the table is almost full ;)

Jokes aside, I'm glad LH is coming along nicely! Great artworks IMO, simple and very fitting.
That's a fine brush line that you have. I'm curious, what kind of software do you use, if you don't mind answering, is it Manga Studio?

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Classic...

Also, YES the thread title does say The Word!!! (laugh) NI!!!

I guess it's supposed to say "one alcohol-filled night"...

Shouldn't that be: "one alcohol-filled knight"...?

On a more serious note:

I must admit that these were the exact reasons I couldn't finish the demo. I'm sure, after what AprilSkies said, that the humour is spot-on in the original Italian, but humour is also the easiest thing to lose in translation to another language. Like Bavolis said: A direct word-for-word translation of jokes usually loses all the subtilty that makes the joke funny in the first place. It takes a very talented translator/editor to preserve the wit of humour in their work.

Good luck with the project though: I really enjoyed the other aspects of the demo!

declerfayt

I love your joke about emptied bottles on my table :D Thanks God, this table is almost full! :D

I'm actualy drawing everything with Adobe Illustrator :)

Mandle: I agree with you about the translation problem. Actualy, for the first beta, I've written all dialogs in French, and then translate them into English - which was not the best process. Thanks to the storyboard technique, I'm now more focus on the visual narration and I rewrote the whole scenario directly in English - with less dialogs, shorter sentences and more action. The humor is still there, but it gives more rythm to the game and the story.

Best of luck declerfayt!

Yep AnasAbdin said, Lancelot's campaign is still on. Sorry for the confusion (with "Greenlight! Yes!" I meant "Yes, my Greenlight campaign is on! At least!")

New free beta!

Hi everyone :) It's been a long time!

Just a quick post to announce Lancelot's new free beta! Thanks to all your suggestions, advice and feedback, the game had changed a lot! No more prologue, you go straight into action! More gameplay! More puzzles! But still the very same humour and political incorrectness :)

Watch the new 50-sec trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UzO3Sy73kw

If you're curious, the download (120 Mb) stands here: www.lancelotshangover.com

Of course, all your suggestions, advice and feedback (good or bad) are again warmly welcomed and, as you can notice, I do use them a lot to improve the game's experience!

All the best! :)

Surprised Mr clerfayt hasn't been back to pimp his kickstarter, just a few days left for this AGS game :) I backed it the other day so wondered if it had been mentioned on AGS (obviously not, since this time last year...!) but hopefully this will help him get a few other backers!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1295580533/lancelots-hangover-the-quest-for-the-holy-booze

Blondbraid

This game looks simply marvelous, and I loved the style and humor in the trailers! (laugh)

Now I cant decide weather to try the beta or wait for the full game on steam, but I sure want to play this game! ;-D

Darth Mandarb

Ummmm.... mods, are you working on this game with him or did you just break a cardinal rule here?

Seeing as how declerfayt hasn't been active in a month I'm going to lock this now!

declerfayt - if you log back in and want to post an update let me know and I'll re-open this!

m0ds

No, he's a friend and a big supporter of my work so I'm doing the same for him. For once, just once, to heck with your rule I'm afraid. I've moved it to my forum.

44 hours to go... roughly 1.5k euro to go! spread the word :)

Blondbraid - but did you back it? ;)

Darth Mandarb

#48
I would have unlocked it...

Good luck with the kickstarter.

Congrats on reaching the kickstarter goal!

Now post an official update so we can move this back to GiP (nod)
