Spoiler
Not at all!...My reasoning was that to become ethereal you become "clear", and also usually in coding "clear" resets a variable's value to null without destroying the variable itself, and also to be "void of sin" kinda "clears" you...

Sorry, but I honestly thought I had it...I'm starting to suspect that my own rather faulty knowledge of coding is to blame here...

Let me ask this:

Spoiler
Does sin refer to the usual meaning, or does it refer to the mathematical meaning?

Only questions here:

Spoiler
So....when you said (5.0) did that indicate that the brackets actually contain a number instead of showing the number of letters in the word? So the actual code could be any length, and then end in a number enclosed in brackets?

Ahhhhhhh...A very nice puzzle...

I got hooked up on:

Spoiler
Ethereal as meaning fading away

But very satisfying conclusion...Gratz to Baron

I was nowhere close to getting it, but enjoyed reading the guesses :-)

Couldn't agree more. The guesses were better than the puzzle ;-D

Giving infantry support at the front (12)

Spoiler
The front of "infantry" is "infant", and who gives support to an infant but a "parent"?  Now, to get that support to the front you need transport, from the Latin root trans, but that reference is obscure like "Cy" Young, the pitcher after whom the best pitcher in Major League Baseball is named after.  Thus: trans + parent + Cy = Transparency! ;-D

Spoiler
Also, "transparency" is the only 12 letter AGS word I can think of. :P

Ah...did I forget to mention that it's not AGS related? :P

Giving infantry support at the front (12)

Spoiler
It's usually airborne forces that support infantry, is that relevant to the clue?
[close]

Also, could you give us a tiny clue about what the answer IS related to?

To answer your first question:
Spoiler
A certain form of infantry support is indeed relevant, but not airborne.

And here's a small hint as to what the answer is related to:
Spoiler
Americans might have an easier time answering this than others ;)
