DOWNFALL

There is nothing Joe wouldn't do for his wife.

But as they try to save their marriage with a romantic getaway, things go from bad to worse, and from worse... to insanity.

In this tale of love, madness and murder  Joe will prove what kind of man he is.

But what kind of man is he exactly? A loving husband? A cold realist? A bitter skeptic? An asshole?

That is something YOU will decide, as you join him on his journey for redemption.

"It's a remake of my first commercial game from 2009 made in a style of The Cat Lady. I've kept the core concept of the original and turned it into a very different beast. The game's hotel Quiet Haven has remained mostly unchanged in its layout and some backgrounds are reminiscent of the old Downfall's, but some also have been completely changed to fit the new style of the game.

I'm also working closely with AGS forum member Yeppoh who's in charge of character art and animation. He is AMAZING and I love what he's produced so far!

TEAM:

WRITING, CODING, BACKGROUND & ADDITIONAL ART: GRIM
ANIMATION: YEPPOH
MUSIC: MICAMIC (+guests)
HOTEL PAINTINGS ART: DYSPHORIA WEAVER
PRODUCTION/PUBLISHING: MODS/SCREEN7

And I will add out voice acting stars as we go. So far we've got:
JOE DAVIS: JESSE GUNN
IVY DAVIS : ISA AND

Great video! This looks like another thriller. Looking forward to the insanity!

AprilSkies

Great video.
Yeppoh's sprites are amazing!

Mandle

The original was great and this remake looks even greater!!! Count me in!!!

Lasca

Looks really nice!

Frodo

Looks amazing!  :cheesy:

I loved the original, and I'm really looking forward to this version, as well.

Yeppoh

I had a field trip doing the animations and the character designs. And more is on their way.

It's nice to see how the game is shaping up.

I see new "Downfall" will be less crazy colored, more in "Cat Lady" style :). Looking forward to it.

Midian Design

Excellent! :) And great video!

Glad to see you're working on this! Best of luck!
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Crimson Wizard

BTW, you may want to add duplicating shotguns as an easter egg :D.

Adeel

I played the original Downfall and I loved it. Though I wasn't scared or crept out, the game actually made me think about its story for a while (after I had finished playing it). The subject of depression is quite delicate and to make a game on such subject without getting depressed yourself is impressive, imho.

I won't deny. I was expecting the cinema to be more...accessible :) . Needless to say, I'm quite pleased that it will be there in the new version

Haha, indeed. :-D

Surdy

Impressive work as always, Rem.

Many references you've got.

I hope I would work with you & Screen7 for a french translation, if you like;)

Remember me all these magical (and gruesome) stuff when I've played the 2009-old version. Good old memories.(laugh)

Thanks!

Takyon

I loved Downfall--the artwork especially. I remember you saying you coded most of it whilst working in a mental institute. Great back story. I look forward to this remake.

Is the story going to be the same as in the original game?
It's gold gold  gold is all I want

From what I've been told - not entirely. Playing the original Downfall will have very little bearing on playing the new one. Themes may be the same but you may not experience the same "story" per se. Hopefully Grim can confirm/deny this but he's still moving house/settling in at the mo :)

Crimson Wizard

Where do I sign up for Alpha/Beta test? :)

Dualnames

I respect Grim lots, and he knows it. So I'm not hijacking this topic with this, I can't wait to see how Downfall looks with the Cat Lady Cut.

"A loving husband? A cold realist? A bitter skeptic? An asshole?"
Didn't that escalate a bit quickly?

Have you thought about Android or iOS version?
I realy miss your adventures on this platform

Grim

DarkestCrow: The handful of games I've played on those devices I truly hated... For me, tablets represent the death of gaming. So, to answer your question - I did think about it briefly, it probably does make perfect sense in terms of sales and such... but even though there are some adventure fans who would welcome good old-school games on those platforms, most people only want to play angry birds. And I hate angry birds.

Thank you for answer :)

You are right, sadly, lots of gamers are not much interest about games based on strong story and serious atmosphere,
I am glad for emulators like ScummVM or unofficial AGS launcher, where I can play something more serious (like your original Downfall)
than tuns of "hidden object" or freemium trash.

The teaser trailer on the front page appears to be broken, it displays 'PLAY ALL' when I load the page and when I try to play the video this happens.

I've already seen the video, I'm just wondering if it's broken for anyone else.

Grim

Thanks for noticing, I fixed it;)

Myshkin

Looks fantastic... I haven't played the original Downfall but I loved The Cat Lady, so another game with a similar style is something I will definitely be looking forward to!

Cyrus

That's amazing!

Will the twist ending be exactly the same, or somehow altered?

It wouldn't be a twist if I told you! :P

JoelMayer

This has probably been asked a lot already, but is it hard to set up these kind of sidescrolling mechanics in AGS? I would love to do a Game like this as well...

Looks great btw! Big fan!

dragontoad: Use Ali's SmoothScrolling & Parallax module. Highly recommended;)

Also, new screenshot:

JoelMayer

Thanks Grim! I'll look into that. Gosh looks really awesome! I like the Character Designs. May i ask what your animator is using as a software? I'm guessing something like After Effects :)

You're guessing right - After Effects;) That guy is amazing and brilliant to work with:)

First thing I noticed is those weird egg/finger things in the background, then I noticed how small that woman is compared to Joe towering over her. Good work!

And pretty handsome too! o3o

More seriously though. As Grim said, I mostly do the animations in After Effects. If all goes well for this year's edition of AdventureX, I might do a panel presentation on some of my animation techniques I used for this game. But I'm not making any promises yet. =D

MufasaRKG

A remake or further into the story? The one I have now was awesome. Reminded me little like silent hill based on the thrill but in small doses. What had made me download this a few months back was the search of horror elements in adventure games.

I'm late to the party but mind=blown!  The video reminds me of David Firth material (Fat-Pie.com)  Uber creepy!

David Firth did voices for two of the characters in The Cat Lady. I'd love to work with him again!;)

SilverSpook

That sure does 'splain a lot then!

He could be the Axe Murderer, perhaps?

Grim

There's certainly no shortage of roles in my games for a guy of his caliber! ;) Pretty much everyone is a creepy psychopath haha;)

Loved the original Downfall, loved Cat Lady. Already love this. If it hits Steam, my library will love it too. Frankly, the level of personal drama in Downfall is what made me play it and to think I'd relive it again in this new package - I'm sold.

qptain Nemo

I don't want to be a negative Nancy, but... I liked Downfall and I liked The Cat Lady much more, so... personally I'd much rather see a completely new work by you. Is this remake worth playing for someone who doesn't really want to play Downfall again, is it different enough? Regardless, I respect you as an author and wish you the best with this project.

Well, to give my two cents, the main reason I'm interested is because I loved Downfall, and feel like the remake will be an overall more polished, improved telling of Joe's story, and the addition of voice acting is pretty dope. May just be me though.

It's very different. I'm not a fan of all these HD remakes, haven't even played the new Grim Fandango, even though it's one of my favourite games ever... But this is all written from the ground up. The stuff I didn't like is gone, replaced with... different stuff;) And for people who played the original Downfall this will be quite an interesting experience. I would never make a game I wouldn't want to play myself. And with this one... I'm pretty confident it will be my best one yet;)

qptain Nemo

Fair enough. Consider me sold, I suppose. :)
(I wouldn't name it exactly the same if that's the case but yeah, it's your game. I'd radically update already released games if I saw fit though, so I guess this opinion isn't worth much.)

Slasher

i could watch this as a film as it is (nod)

great work ;)

NickyNyce

I really enjoyed the original, and this looks 10x better. Great trailer!

I can't wait to see what your twisted mind has done to this classic.

m0ds

Yep, thanks for the comments!

Harvester Games fans can now pre-order Downfall from the new look http://www.screen7.co.uk website.

I say it like that because you might want to wait til it's on an official channel, as I am new to all the Humble workings (though they seem pretty straightforward) :P

You can also see that it's coming soon on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/364390

Still looking good for a Valentine's 14th date where we can, and 15th where we can't.

m0ds

It's out! If you pre-ordered via Humble widget then check your activation page for your stuff now! If not, you can buy it right away at http://www.screen7.co.uk

Steam version will be live tomorrow (Monday 15th) and it will be available on GOG in the coming days.

Happy valentines...or not...

(I will make a completed games thread tomorrow)
