Since I was asked on IRC, as per this post, awards eligibility is based on release date. If you added your game to the database too late (i.e. after 31/12/14), please notify me so I can pester AGA to hammer the entry.

Moderators, could you please unsticky this? thanks

Andail

Funny how last year's thread had like 10 pages worth of debating at this point!
Also, out of curiosity, when does the nomination phase begin?

I usually wait a bit for FYC posts to come in. It seems there will be no more, so I'll contact AGA.

Check the conspicuous banner above, play games, choose your favs (and thank AGA for his excellent job)!

People who haven't yet nominated are being told they've already nominated. :/

Whoops, I accidentally forgot to change a '2013' to '2014' in the code, so it was seeing people's votes from last year.  Should be fixed now.

Shouldn't we be able to specify which character are we nominating for Best Character? This feature was available during last year's nominations. Now is probably too late to fix this though (yep, I have discovered this issue just a day before the deadline :))...
Chaos is just patterns we haven't recognized.

cat

Only twelve hours left! Just did my nominations.

I'm glad I managed to play a decent amount of games mentioned in the FYC thread. That is, only to discover on the nomination page, that there were so many other games eligible for the awards this year, even some blockbuster games :(. Well, I guess if the author does not bother to mention his or her game in the FYC thread, why should I bother to play and nominate it...

Mandle

My nominations are in...May the best games win!!!

Hope I can make it to the awards this year. Last year was a blast!

Duly noted, I'll see if we can whip something (someone?) for phase ][.

Nominating will close soon, I'll tally the votes ASAP. For now I can share 56 (fiftysix) people nominated.

An interesting question here. Suppose game A contains characters Jim and Bob, who get ten votes each, and game B contains character Mary, who gets fifteen votes. Does the "best character" award go to game A, which scored 20 votes against B's 15; or should it go to game B, since Mary got more votes than either Jim or Bob?

Mary, I say, as it's not Best Characters but Best Character.

Sounds good. Could you please mention this on the voting page so that the voters don't make the wrong assumption?

Snarky

So the final vote will require specifying a character, not just the game?

Then, if possible, I would suggest you ask the people who nominated those games which character they were thinking of, and go with the most popular choice as the nominee representing each game. Otherwise I think it's going to be tough to get any kind of consensus vote when some games (e.g. Quest for Infamy) has so many characters to choose from, and I would worry that the result would be pretty random.

Oh, and nice work with the nominations, bici and everyone, and congratulations to the nominees. Even with a few games dominating many of the categories, I count 18 games to play before voting! (Well, I've played a few of them already, but I'll probably revisit them to refresh my memory.)

Stupot

I made a handy little checklist of all the nominated games, so YOU don't have to!

[ ] A.C.R.O.N.Y.M
[ ] A Date in the Park
[ ] A Golden Wake
[ ] All Pigs Deserve to Burn in Hell
[ ] Beer
[ ] Blackwell Epiphany
[ ] Danger Mouse Demo
[ ] Don't Drink the Pink
[ ] Floaty Rog
[ ] Goat Herd and the Gods
[ ] Haunted Castle
[ ] Mudlarks
[ ] Quest for Infamy
[ ] Red Hot Overdrive
[ ] Sisyphus Reborn
[ ] Tales - Tech Demo
[ ] The Apotheosis Project
[ ] The Samaritan Paradox

Congrats to the nominees! Nothing surprising there, to be honest. I'm just a bit disappointed that Ponderabilia was not nominated.

AGA

Nice try, but those are only the top nominations.  There were others that weren't counted because they had too few votes.

That's just my bad wording, sorry. I just meant it's a list of games that made it through the nomination phase so that people can look at the list and check the games off as they play them for the voting stage.

Snarky

I only played about four AGS games from last year, but I considered throwing some nominations to less high-profile games that seemed deserving in various categories (including Ponderabilia). In the end, though, it just didn't seem right nominating games I hadn't played â€" or any games, as long as I hadn't tried a wider sample. But I look forward to playing the finalists and taking part in the voting!

This is why I never vote anymore.  I actually played a few of the top ranked games, but it doesn't seem right to only vote for those and to ignore so many great, but less popular, ones.

cat

I haven't played most of the high-profile games...

I'm glad there is always the Pick of the Month to give some love to those overlooked gems out there :)

m0ds

Well done nominees! Damn I feel a bit bad that some games didn't get a nomination. Bizarre Earthquake, you win the m0ds guilt award for not appearing in Best Demo.

Anyway glad to see that by selecting the Samaritan Paradox for every select box per category paid off!

OK I didn't actually do that, so I'm thankful to those who of course did nominate it for so many categories, and of course well done Andail. Just The Blackwell Epiphany to beat on every single one of them!! :=

:P

Good luck to everyone! :)

I thought freeware and commercial games were split this year.

There is a freeware category but not commercial category.

Both commercial and freeware games share on best AGS game category.

No. We had a vote about how to do it. This was the decision. So there's a special category reserved for freeware games, and for the rest all games compete equally.

Thank you to all who nominated Sisyphus Reborn! I'm genuinely humbled to be alongside such great freeware games from last year. This was my first attempt at making an actual adventure type game, so I'm really happy people have enjoyed it ;-D
Congratulations to all the nominees!

moloko

Congratulations to all nominees! Might I suggest an additional category, however? I wouldn't mind nominating Ponderabilia to the "Most depraved" or "Least likely to make sense" category, as I feel it would do well in both.

Voting is over, time to decide when to hold the big ceremony!

Cast your preferences here! (All times are London time)

If you forgot, the way to attend is the The AGS Awards game-ceremony 2014 (thanks Snarky for having picked up the development!).

If you can't use the game (you run Linux, etc.), pick an IRC client (like xchat) (tutorial here), or just use your web browser (warning: more of a resource hog and a high risk of failure!).

I recently had some problems with doodle, so I started looking for alternatives. Dudle seems solid and is open source (AGPLv3), so that was my pick (who knows, in the future it may be handy to host an instance on aventuregamestudio.co.uk).

Yes! It is paramount for the game-ceremony developer to be there (ready with ductape, ready to be applauded), and apparently Snarky goes to bed early (lucky him!).

Snarky

Well, 22:00 is really 23:00 here, and the ceremony has been known to go on for three hours... I mean, I could do it, particularly on Saturday, but I'd much rather not.

I didn't count on my "no" being an absolute veto; you can stick them up again if you want.

I know who's taking most of the awards this year, I even bet on it one year ago. This is not a conspiracy phase I'm going through, I have solid evidence that men can have several testicles and still live a normal life. And I'm also changing my name to Isis Mike. The AGS awards ceremony is that special part of the year, just like Xmas, rich kids do get their toys while the others look at them on the TV. Ahhh, the joy!
I'll be there tomorrow to cast a dark shadow over the ceremony, see ya!

very restrictive firewalls:

Allowing 'AGS Awards 2014.exe' a connection by...

To remote adress: 217.174.240.177 (irc.agsarchives.com)
To remote port: 6667

more versed than me might be able to provide additional help/info.)

OK, here goes nothing...
AGS Awards Client 1.0

If we experience any bugs in the next couple of hours, I could still try to fix them, but let's assume this is the actual, final client...

Things to know about the client:
-It only works under DirectDraw, not Direct3D/DirectX9 (if you try, it will give you a "too many sprites" error on launch).
-If you get a white error box popping up (which means there's been a problem with the IRC connection), close it ASAP. If you leave it open, the game will eventually freeze completely, and you'll have to kill it with Ctrl-Shift-ESC.
-Don't do the "click dance" (where you click like crazy in different places). If you keep doing it, you'll eventually cause a buffer overflow and crash.

The red carpet entrance and the closing "live" performance were totally unexpected and memorable touches...

Gratz to all the winners! It was great to see a fairly balanced selection of awesome games sharing the prizes this year. It was especially awesome to see Mudlarks win the best freeware game. I voted for Mudlarks in that category and was very stoked to see it win!!!

It was also great that Dave Gilbert could make it in time to receive two prizes personally, and his comment about his two-year-old clapping when mommy told him/her: "daddy just won an award" made me "awwwwwwwwwww" in real life.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees! And well done to Quest for Infamy for giving Blackwell Epiphany strong competition!

Like I said in the ceremony, I fell behind on my game-playing last year and didn't have time to do my usual "play the nominated games during the voting period" due to working on the ceremony, so I've only completed a few of them, but from what I've seen they all look very award-worthy. Shame that The Samaritan Paradox (which I'd particularly highlight for some rather devious puzzles) and A Golden Wake (which I've been completely charmed by just from gameplay videos) went home empty-handed.

I'm also glad it sounds like people enjoyed the ceremony. Sox, you said you were recording? I look forward to seeing it on YouTube; I was too preoccupied to really get the full experience live. I also have a log that includes the "silent" portions missing from bicilotti's version, but it includes all the application communication as well (updates for people moving, and the multimedia control commands), so I'll have to strip that out to make it readable.

I apologize for any crashes, glitches or other bugs. If you did experience problems, please leave a bug report in the other thread. Suggestions for improvements are welcome! And I want to thank the many people who helped update the ceremony (and whom I've been bugging with nearly constant PMs in the last month or so): bicilotti, for running and hosting the awards year after year! Dualnames for providing the code from last year, advising on the programming, helping with testing and assisting with directing the multimedia part last night. Calin Leafshade and Crimson Wizard for making a patch and special AGS build that made the individualized character scaling possible. Noa Vana for her song, which she animated herself! Daniel Thomas and Andail for the brilliant red carpet background. Ali for sending the PSD of the main background, enabling the "lights out" effect. All the people who contributed music, particularly highlighting Mods and Problem, who gave me a lot to choose from. All the beta testers, whose immense patience helped turn a buggy mess into a relatively smooth experience. And finally, all the people who contributed avatars, which I think made the night a real AGS party! Thanks!

Edit: Oh, and I hope the NSFW afterparty ("AGS After Dark," as I called it in my head) was an acceptable compromise between the people who wanted to see some of the raunchy material from previous years and those of us who objected to that stuff. I really wanted the event to be something everyone could enjoy and not be put off by, without at the same time Disneyfying it completely.

Wyz

I regret not being there last night; but I look forward watching the event on YouTube when that comes available. Looks like everyone had a good time and I'm psyched about that (especially Noa's performance). I would not have guessed the client could stand the time and still deliver like this :-D. It'd like to thank everyone (especially Duals previous year and Snarky this year) to bring it to the next level!

I hope it has been a inspiration to game developers professional and aspiring, proving AGS is still very much alive, and we see more awesome games next year! (nod)
Life is like an adventure without the pixel hunts.

Blackthorne

Snarky, that AGS client was above and beyond, and a ton of fun! The whole affair was awesome.  I'm really surprised by the wins Quest For Infamy got, and it was just amazing how many great AGS games were made in 2014. Everyone who was nominated just had phenomenal work; to even be considered part of that pantheon is amazing, so winning anything is truly an honor. You're all so talented and creative, and being a part of this community is a real treat.  I'm constantly amazed by the quality of games people are creating - from the traditional adventure games, to the crazy things people do with AGS, like Beer! and Red Hot Racing... when I was a kid, hacking away on an old Apple ][+ when I was a kid, I don't think I could have imagined that something like this would exist, and that I would still be doing the stuff I loved almost 30 years later.

Thanks again for everything, everyone. I hope everyone keeps on producing, creating and dreaming up amazing games.

I'd like to thank Snarky for the great idea and opportunity. I had fun recording and animating for it.

Clearly, from the bits I did get to see, a lot of effort, blood and tears were put into this ceremony and it looked and sounded very impressive! Great work everyone!

First of all thank you to everyone that nominated Goat Herd and the Gods, even tho we didn't walk away with any awards this year, I'm very happy that we got nominated in many of the categories :D
Second, a HUGE congrats to everyone that did win an award.
and last but not least fantastic work Snarky, it was much smoother this year, I'm glad to see it was a bit cleaner this year and had no problem with the NSFW after party, I felt that was a good idea as anyone that didn't want to see that kinda content could leave after the main show :)
I loved that we got to use our own characters!

Glad to see everyone has accepted the political correctness of the ceremony, glad to see the ceremony much improved. In all honesty, I knew it would be a bad decision to join the ceremony after last years encounters, and it still hurts to see so much hypocrisy lying around, I felt it was a good decision to join, turns out it wasn't. I'll just leave this here, and leave the discussion as well, letting you guys to much lighter/cheery tones.

Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Yeah Snarky really well done! Congratulations on an absolutely rip roaring success. So much smoother and less crashy. I hope you are very proud :-D

I entirely agree that it was great to have a fun awards ceremony all could attend without feeling uncomfortable, and that the optional NSFW content was included after the main event for those who wanted it. A very diplomatic and fair approach. Well done for navigating those waters skilfully too :)

Congratulations to the winners and nominees and big thanks to the organizers! This year's ceremony was great, I loved the red carpet and other nice features (such as the songs). Looking forward to the next year already.
Chaos is just patterns we haven't recognized.

I'm sorry to see this is still such a sore topic for you, Dualnames. I wouldn't have brought it up at all if I knew you'd react this way, and mentioning it honestly wasn't meant as an attack on you. Planning and implementing the ceremony gave me greater appreciation for how difficult it is to design an event that has to target everyone in the community, when we don't all agree on certain things. What I came up with is no doubt biased in favor of my own opinion, but I did genuinely try to accommodate people on the other side of the issue as well. If it makes you feel better, from some of the comments in chat there were certainly people who would have preferred a more non-PC version of the ceremony. Hopefully it didn't ruin anyone (else)'s night.

I really appreciated your help and support during development and the event itself, and I got the impression you came around on the question of being involved, and ended up enjoying it. I've tried to make it clear whenever I can that the core parts of the program is all to your (and Wyz's) credit: I don't actually think I fixed a single serious bug in the existing code, apart from eliminating the chat bot. The fact that the backend was already working well freed me up to work on fancy new features that may look cool but are actually comparatively much simpler. So even if you regret your involvement, I certainly don't!

I hope a small thing like acknowledging a disagreement about suitable content doesn't ruin it for you.

I think you did it as skillfully as anyone in your position could have. I think we know you can't please everyone but you listened to the minority members of the forum and gave us a space where we felt welcome. And while I did not wish to partake in the NSFW after party I understood it was for those who wanted a more risqué ceremony and that they have the right to have that if they want. It's about compromise and realising we aren't always entitled to have everything exactly the way we want. That means some accepting a cleaner AGS awards, and some accepting they aren't really going to enjoy the NSFW after party. You tried hard to give everybody something and that's more than many people would do and I can respect that.

Also the more pc tone of the awards meant I was happy to have family members watching which was nice :)

Oh, I guess I wasn't supposed to say "Holy Balls!" in surprise when we won that one time.  I was honestly shocked.  Hah. Mea culpa.

Screw politeness, I'll swear like a good ol' pirate every time. Come to think of it, kids shouldn't even be allowed in the ceremony. It's only for mature, responsible adults.

And, Ponch, you're welcome! :=

AGA

Thanks for the Award, people.  I was unfortunately watching The Who in concert, so couldn't make it to the ceremony.

Oh, and I added the relevant Awards to each game's credits (and mine and Edmundito's forum profiles).

Hobo

Congratulations to all the winners and also nominees!

I quickly browsed through the IRC log and the video and looks like it was a real fun event. I'll try to be part of it next year.

How can "unfortunately" and "watching The Who in concert" be in the same sentence??  8-0

Well, did they call him on stage to accept an award? If not, he chose poorly. Get your priorities straight, AGA! (nod)

Retro Wolf

Glad to see everyone had a good time!
If I didn't have to get up at two in the morning to go to work the next day, I'd have been there...
Hopefully next year.

Congratulations to all the winners!
