it costs $150 normally and you can get it for $6+ in the weekly humble bundle atm. I'm considering getting that. Is learning scripting in it easy? is it even better than AGS? 8-0

A lot of developers on Gamejolt use it.

Most seem to think that ags is too out-dated.

Well, of course, this is just the sort of blinkered philistine pig-ignorance I've come to expect from non-creative garbage.

Very limited, not much you can do with it.

In all fairness, it is not a bad program. I've used the free version for a while and it's nice and easy to get into. The scripting is fairly simple and the amount of tutorials is staggering.

IMO it suffers from being just a bit too generic. A specialised toolkit (like AGS) will always be better suited towards their intended end product. GameMaker offers "everything" and, as a result, doesn't really shine in any way.

If you are actually considering making a point-and-click adventure with GameMaker, it is ill equipped for that. If you want to try out simpler stuff like retro arcade games or maybe a shmup, it's easy to recommend it though, especially for the price.

Another thing is the licensing. I never really understood it. YOu need a rather expensive license to distribute games without the GM logo, and some versions are only to be used for freeware games, and it's really a bit of a mess.

I love game maker, and have managed to get some licences over the years for cheap. Thing is I've not really released any real games with it! AGS has that honour.

I've got a little bit of GML experience.  It's quite powerful, and there's a lot of indie developers who have done some fantastic work with it (Risk of Rain, Miami Hotline, Blazin' Aces, Stealth Bastard, Fran Bow, etc.) so don't let anyone tell you that it's limited.  Personally, I find AGS way, way, way more intuitive, but that's just me.  There's a large community over there, and lot of tutorials and scripting support...although if you want to learn an entirely new tool, it wouldn't be the one I would choose per se.

If nothing else, the bundle was worth it to me for the games it includes. The fact that you get a PRO license for Game Maker and source code for several of the games is a nice added benefit, even if you don't intend to use GM for releasing games. That said, I don't even like GM but I still bought the bundle.

P.S. If you do buy the bundle, don't expect to be using Game Maker any time soon. You have to go through the Yoyo Games website to get your license key, and their server is extremely overloaded from the response to this Humble Bundle. If you can even manage to register an account and get your HB key put in on their site, don't hold your breath on getting the license or getting the GM software to properly register that license. Their server has completely crashed multiple times since this HB began.

Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that its licensing situation makes GameMaker's seem sane, I'd suggest the clone ENIGMA.

As it is, if you want a cross-platform engine that costs nothing, has a sane license and can do 2D or 3D, there's Godot. http://www.godotengine.org/projects/godot-engine And while general purpose, it's been used (and is being used) to create a few p&c adventure games.

Dude for $6? Get it. As soon as I saw this I was all trying to find someone to loan me $6 cause I'm broke. Now I only want to upgrade to 12 to get the Android export cause that's expensive too.

It's not the money, it's rather the time needed to get into yet another engine and if it is worth it ;)

Well if you pay $12 you get the source code for a point and click adventure game thrown in. GML has a "move towards" function as well as pathfinding (mp_grid) so if you think GML looks okay it seems a pretty good deal. I'll also second the recommendation for Godot if you are looking to learn something completely different, there are few quirks in the editor but the way objects are handled is fairly unique and the scripting language seems straightforward.

I've historically not really been able to get into it but I think the high volume of good work done with it kind of speaks for itself these days. I bought this bundle and I'm looking forward to poking around those source codes once the licenses finally come through!
