Looks cracking. Keep it up :-)

Monsieur OUXX

Wow. Really, really cool graphics. I hope the story/puzzles will be of the same quality.

Blondbraid

Looks beautiful, and your depiction of Stockholm looks spot on! (nod)

cianty

Wow, those graphics look awesome! Really really cool! The story also sounds very promising.

Just one honest word though: Please make sure some native speaker will work on the texts. I found the introductory post near unbearable to read, which is a huge shame considering the great graphics and premise.

Keep it up!

Sweden in the 80s...a daughter investigating the disappearence of her father...Are we talking about the SAMARITAN PA...nevermind (roll)

The art looks gorgeous.
One minor quibble : Karin looks a bit like a boy (portrait). You may try to reduce her chin.

AprilSkies

this looks so beautiful!
all is perfect to my eyes, both backgrounds and portraits!

I think heaven is going to be an eternity of Sweden in the 80s. For some reason the first screenshot made me go and listen to "Det blÄser en vind". Your choice of colors is flawless. The story is intriguing. I'm so looking for this :) good luck.

Gribbler

I love the art! Looks awesome!

selmiak

Everyone is in awe? Right so!
That's some sweet pixelart you've got there. And traveling around the world and searching for missing persons and ancient archeological stuff and big mysteries is always cool! Please keep us updated!
How long will it be? Are you going for a commercial release or will it be free for all?

Martyn

Thanks everyone! :cheesy:

that's what I can tell you now!

CaptainD

The characters seem interesting and those screens are wonderful!  All the best with development.

Gurok

Ummm... these backgrounds are beautiful. I wish you the best of success.

Snarky

Looks great, and from that first background could easily be taken for a sequel to The Samaritan Paradox.

Just a small thing, but it might be best to get it sorted early on. "Mickelsön" in English would probably be "Mickel's Island" or "Mickel Island". "Mickels Island" suggests that it's named after someone named "Mickels".

Kumpel

Don't you mean someone named "Mickel", Snarky? The correct spelling for an island of a guy named Mickels would be "Mickels' Island" I think.

Anyway b2t:

This looks fantastic Martyn! I love your "The Journey Down" easteregg. I hope the character says something good about these masks (laugh).

You logo design reminds me of some 80's TV Show but I really cant remember which one. I think it was a sitcom...

Good luck for your project!

No. In English, island names are usually just the name (almost always the family name or peerage) of the person they're named after, without a possessive: e.g. Scott Island, Ellis Island, Maury Island, etc. In fact, in the US it's against official naming regulations to use a possessive S in place names (with only a handful of exceptions)!

Although a few islands elsewhere do have a possessive (I assume; I can't actually think of any), that can't be the case for "Mickels Island", since it's lacking an apostrophe altogether.

(Some old names omit the apostrophe even if the etymology calls for it, but this is quite uncommon.)

Martyn

Kumpel: Thanks! Glad you saw it! Is actually four easter egg in that room "four different games"
Will certainly place more easteregg in the game!

concerning the name: I have no idea! I write That in a hurry after the swedish name on the game!
Hummm.... In Swedish The name is Mickelsön after MickelsmÀssan on 29 September.
so in english thats is Michaelmas, and than it shud be Michael Island instead??
but the name will be change, as I wrote! After all of the Easter Island's not actually Easter Island! its Rapa Nui!?

In English it would probably be Michaelmas Island ("michaelmas" is pronounced "mickelmuss", BTW). In fact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michaelmas_Island

Finally I have change the name to... The Mystery Of Rakkathua.
Rakkathua is the local and the oldest name of the island.

So for all, an early Christmas present from the Rakkathua.
Its a sneak preview of one of 10 location from the island.

This is the tent camp, with views over the island's highest peak.

My first sketch of the camp, made in 2014.

I studied this bg thoroughly and I came to one conclusion:

It is PERFECT

cat

Wow, this looks so great - looking forward to it!

SilverSpook

Looks really cool, man!

As someone of Pacific Islander ancestry grown and raised on a Pacific Island, I give my cultural-imperialism-proof / anti-cultural-appropriation stamp of approval to Rakkathua.  Wise decision to let the Mickelson Island or whatnot go.  :)

Great background as well!  The tropical color palette is well captured, and I like that you have the geo-tectonic details subtly worked in there (shield volcano in golden-years just before atol-retirement).  Good luck with this!

Blondbraid

The new screenshots looks absolutely gorgeous! 8-)

Mathias

Nice work. Looking forward to see more of this game.

Hope you all get a really nice christmas!

Hey there, here are some NEWS from Rakkathua!

First a new screen I been working on.

[imgzoom]http://www.seiland.se/martin/files/gimgs/22_rocksmal.gif[/imgzoom]

The location is near the top of the mountain on the island.
This is only half of the new screen, original it's 640x200

This week I also added a "coin menu" as in CoMI and FT, with three choices, talk, look and use.
Before I had only one click for all choices, but I was not happy with that. Wanted more choices and combinations.

[imgzoom]http://www.seiland.se/martin/files/gimgs/22_point.gif[/imgzoom]

Finally... Its feels really really good to animate and give life to a character or a landscape, even if it's not so smooth looking :-)
This is my new friend Micke:

[imgzoom]http://www.seiland.se/martin/files/gimgs/22_shipsmanani.gif[/imgzoom]

O yes... almost forget! A swedish demo is coming in April.

selmiak

this looks really sweet. But Micke turning his head looks unhealthy for him when he doesn't move his body ;)

Martyn

Thanks salmiak!

Yep, you're right, really unhealthy dude!

SilverSpook

That's one buff Giligan, eh?  Nice job there!

AnasAbdin

I'm loving 'The Mystery Of Rakkathua' more and more! I can only imagine the dialog with Micke!  (laugh)
Seriously, your pixels are perfect. The shading on the 'dry' grass on the island is breath taking. The color palette is so beautiful and simply brings joy to my heart  :-*

Wow, gotta agree with the rest of the good folks here - it really does look gorgeous. :D Can't wait to see more!
It's nice that you're also posting some design and development sketches/notes - always happy to see those!

Thanks, thats nice to here, it warms!

When i started I had clear vision that the scenery was important.
A nice colorful scenery with few colors and the classic pixel art style without antialiasing.
Programing, animation, or struktur a advance game play is not my strongest side.
But... I will try to keep the quality there as well!

Promise there will be more design and development sketches and things to wait for.

By the way, concerning the boat!
Spoiler
The model for the boat is Belafonte in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Andail

I approve of this game.

It's cool that you're going down the "true" pixel art route - I'd do the same if I weren't so impatient when it comes to painting...

Two Tales

This certainly is looking like a treat for my eyes. Love the artwork.

News from the Rakkathua! 11-02-2017

The game making has sadly been down for almost one year now, not on purpose, but it is on the move again! The process has not quite been down over this time, I have been working on the script and dialogue, and it's starting to feel really good.
I can happily announce that my friend, Johan has started working on the music, especially for this game. I Do not know exactly what it will sound like, but we've been talking about something that is in between music and backgrounds sound, it will be very exciting.

Right now I'm working on this, the map over the island.

[imgzoom]http://www.seiland.se/martin/files/gimgs/22_313map_v2.gif[/imgzoom]
[imgzoom]http://www.seiland.se/martin/files/gimgs/22_map.jpg[/imgzoom]

it's a bit rough now but it will get more detailed.

AnasAbdin

Take your time!
Both the island sketch and background look great ;-D
Can't wait to hear the music 8-)

Cassiebsg

Best of luck! And agree, the Island already looks great! (nod)
There are those who believe that life here began out there...
