Trivia!
« on: 10 Sep 2016, 12:45 »
We hold a trivia quiz on IRC every Saturday (3 PM London time / midnight Melbourne time)

There are no prizes, but plenty of friendly competition! It's loads of fun!

We usually have five or six competitors, but we'd love to have more.

The majority of the trivia database comes unchanged from the 90s. There are questions about West Germany, 1950s music (for the baby boomers) and plenty of scientific research that's since been disproven. Babar's been working on modernising our database, but until that's complete, we're considering it part of the challenge.

Anyway, please drop by. The quiz is due to start in about two hours from the time of this post.

Server: irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk
Channel: #ags

UPDATE: There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Nothing big. Random Steam keys!

T R I V I A

Hi everyone!

#ags IRC Trivia will be happening again today! Join us at 3 PM London time / midnight Melbourne time for some pub-style trivia with some terribly outdated questions and random Steam keys for prizes!

1st prize: Steam key
2nd prize: Lesser Steam key
3rd prize: Even lesser Steam key

Last week, Matt took the top prize, with Babar coming in second place.

We have a very relaxed atmosphere. Feel free to pop open a beer for that authentic pub-trivia experience. Perhaps let a few cigarettes smoulder while you spill a beer on the carpet. How far you take it is up to you!

The quiz will start in roughly eight hours from now, and it usually goes for about 90 minutes (or longer, depending on demand). You don't have to be there for the whole thing. You can just drop by to say hello for five minutes if you like. Prizes will be given out at the end of the trivia session. Use this link to see your local start time:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Next+Trivia+Night&iso=20160917T14&p1=1440&ah=1&am=30

Server: irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk
Channel: #ags

Hope to see you there!

Note: Jumping into trivia could be a bit confusing, especially if you miss the start, so I thought I'd give a mini trivia tutorial.

Each question starts with Roger announcing the question and the first clue.

Code: [Select]
<Roger> (       ) For 32 points
<Roger> Question: What is the capital of Norway?
<Roger> 1st Clue: **** (120 seconds remaining)

You have two minutes in total for each question. The first clue tells you the number of letters in the answer. Answers are case insensitive, but you need to be sure to include any punctuation.

The second clue happens at the 60 second mark and usually gives away the first two letters, e.g.:

Code: [Select]
<Roger> 2nd Clue: Os** (60 seconds and 16 points remaining)
Note: The number of points given goes down with each successive clue.

Finally, if nobody's got it when there are 30 seconds remaining, there's a third clue with a good portion of the remaining letters revealed:

Code: [Select]
<Roger> 3rd Clue: Os*o (30 seconds and 8 points remaining)
When someone answers correctly, s/he gets awarded however many points were remaining and we move on to the next question.

P.S. Yes, I'm such a predator, Adeel. :P Come join us!

Come on, Ben. Your post is worse than those 'I earn XXXXX$ from home' ones. No one in their right mind is going to fall for this.

To anyone unsuspecting, let me explain you the actual prizes:

First place: 3x copies of Bad Rats
Second place: 2x copies of Bad Rats
Third place: 1 copy of Bad Rats

Guys, guys, Bad Rats is only for first place! I can't offer top-tier Steam titles at every placing.

TRIVIA
is happening again this week! Though I've clearly not put as much effort into the heading this time 'round.

We had a great trivia night/afternoon last week.

Special guests included Stupot+ and Creamy! But not Adeel (yet). We'd love to see you there!

The final scores were:

Code: [Select]
#1:        Matt   950
#2:       Gurok   364
#3:  Catpuncher   239
#4:      ibispi   162
#5:   Cassiebsg    89
#6:      Stupot    72
#7:       Babar    48
#8:         FSi    39

I have some important news: Matt will be absent from this week's trivia. What does this mean for you? Well, Matt is the unofficial trivia king in #ags. You'll have a better chance of winning without Matt sniping all of the answers.

As usual, the game will start at midnight Melbourne time / 3:00 PM London time. The whole thing lasts 90 minutes, but you're free to drop in or out at any time.

Gonna try to join today - let's see if my kids remain occupied by their grandparents for long enough! :-D

EDIT - good fun to be had by all, to the repeated cries of "rigged!" and "UK bias!" :-D.  Glad I didn't disgrace myself, managed to come second to the all-conquering Matt.

Thanks guys and gals!  Probably won't be able to join you very often, you I will when I can.

TRIVIA

Last week, the final scoreboard was:

Code: [Select]
#1:       Matt   517
#2:   CaptainD   299
#3:      Gurok   197
#4:     ibispi   170
#5:     Stupot   123
#6:        FSi    34
#7:  Cassiebsg    22

Both Matt and CaptainD walked away with prizes. Congrats!

Yes, the standard thing in trivia is to claim people cheated or "haxxed" when they answer a question quickly. UK bias is another common claim, especially in the case of Matt. Speaking of which, Matt won't be joining us for trivia this week, so everyone should have a better chance of getting a prize!

For reference, Google is banned, but we play with an honour system. Remember, if you cheat and use Google, you're only cheating yourself. That dodgy Steam key you win will feel hollow.

This week's trivia will be held in about 6 hours from now.

You can check the official start time here:

I don't have the scores with me right now, but just roughly:

1st: FSi     500 and something
2nd: ibispi
3rd: Gurok   286 or so?
4th: Stupot  210-220 ?
5th: Cassiebsg  ~80 ?
6th: Babar?

FSi came out of nowhere and blitzed it.

FSi won "Abyss Odyssey", which sounds a lot like Abe's Oddyssey, but isn't.
ibispi took home "Enemy Mind", which sounds a lot like that movie, Enemy Mine, but isn't.

Congrats to all who played! We'll be back to do it all again this Saturday, including I suspect, Matt, so get ready for some stiff competition!

#5:  Cassiebsg    86
#6:      Babar    36

After a narrowly avoided disaster with rog earlier in the week, trivia will be running this week, once again!

The time has changed slightly. Well, if you live in London, it hasn't. Trivia will be starting at 3 PM, London time. Now that daylight saving is over, that's actually an hour later. You can check the time here.

Also, congratulations to last week's winner, Matt.

Code: [Select]
#1:       Matt   749
#2:  CaesarCub   674
#3:      Gurok   328
#4:     Stupot   291
#5:  Dualnames   186
#6:     ibispi   152

See you in just two short hours!

The time changed caused a few problems, so we're going back to 2 PM GMT (also 2 PM London time) this week. For people outside of London, this means it won't be pushed an hour forward from where it was. You can check the start time here.

Congratulations to last week's winner, me! :P

Code: [Select]
#1:      Gurok   381
#2:        cat   370
#3:     Stupot   241
#4:     ibispi   234
#5:    JimReed    73
#6:  Cassiebsg    64

This week's trivia is fancy dress! There is also a door prize. Sorry for the late notice.

See you in about one hour!
