The Tale of Lonkey Island
« on: 15 Oct 2016, 00:08 »
Hey guys,
today I present you my new fangame:

The young Grisush Thriftweed lands on the Caribean Island of Miele and wants to become a firefighter!
But after he has beaten the 3 trials, the zombie pirate ElChoco kidnaps the govenor of the island.
Of course it is the business of our hero, to rescue the govenor...

This story sounds very familiar but also very strange to you?

You're right!

The Tale of Lonkey Island is a parody on the classic adventures of LucasArts. Everything is very similar, but also very different than in the original games.

Features:
- Classic old-school fan adventure
- Classic retro graphics and sounds
- Full length game
- English and German voice output to read for yourself
- includes 5 parts located on 3 different islands
- very freaked out story and puzzles including a lot of suprises
- alternative solutions and game ends

DOWNLOAD on AGS-Gamesite

Screenshots:
Spoiler: ShowHide

I wish you al lot of fun!

Note that the game's original language is German - so if you like to play it in English, choose the English Translation.

Right now I am in part 1 as I explore the city of Miele Island, but so far I can say I really like all the things I have seen so far (playing in german btw :D). I enjoy the humour a lot and how it takes a bizarre spin on the events of the original game. It took me a short while to find out how to get the cook out of the kitchen, but other than that I never got stuck so far. :D
Generally I am very fond of the idea of using all the assets of the original games to put them back together in all kinds of weird ways... it`s just so interesting to see what comes out of it (enjoyed this kind of style before in Quest for Glory 4 1/2).
I will keep playing it, can`t wait to see what other stuff still lies before me :D

I'll like to play but setting isn't right!
When we attempting play at full screen, it run smallest screen when with run as windows instead as full window deselected using setting.

Can you fix this?

but playable area is very small and you might enlarge as full screen!

I thought this would be a crappy dirty "remix" of existing assets but the comment above make me want to try it. ;-D

Found a blocking bug :
Spoiler: ShowHide

after you take the hamster, cannonball leaves. You're left alone in his house. Before leaving the house, if you close the door to the sea, and then re-open it, an invisible character says "thank you" and then the game stops responding. All you can do is killing the process.

The game uses the font without a proper "z".

Hi blur, I already found this issue while playing with an inofficial android app.
When I start the game directly with the exe in windows, there is no problem with the "z".
Could you go more into detail with your proposition?

I will try:
I downloaded the game from the link in the first post.
I run the game in AGS, version 3.4.1.3 on linux.
As you can see there's a problem with the "z" in this screen shot,
but also the outlines of the font are shifted to the right the further the text goes to the right:

Perhaps the font is broken or there's something wrong with the freetype library (version 2.5.2) used in my AGS engine.

Thanks. I think there is a compatibility issue between the game and your Linux runner. (also the game uses just AGS engine version 3.3.4.2.)
Have you tried to run the exe directly with wine?

Thanks to your information, I complied version 3.3.4.2 of the engine and the problem with the font outlines does not appear there.

But the "z" still looks like an "ı":

I am loving this game (and wondering why I hadn't found it sooner actually)!  I'm having a huge issue though--I had posted elsewhere earlier today that I was stuck at the whack-a-rat game (couldn't win it)...so, after many, many, many tries, I finally beat it.  Problem is, right after I won, my game (Lonkey Island, not whack-a-rat) immediately crashed!  I restored from an earlier spot and tried to once again win (again, it took many, many tries), only to have the same thing happen.

I'm trying to beat the whack-a-rat once more so that I can write down the error message I'm getting when it crashes, but of course now I'm having a hard time winning for a third time.  So, in the meantime--has this happened to anyone else??  I've come so far in Lonkey, but still have so far to go--and I would REALLY hate it to not be able to finish Lonkey Island!  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  I'm pretty resigned to the fact that I'm probably screwed though. :(

Hi Sarah,

great to hear, that you have so much fun with the game. :-D

Also thanks for reporting that bug. You're not the first one who reports it (but the first one who's stated that the bug occurs twice).
Unfortunately I haven't managed to reconstruct it yet.
I'm currently working on a new release-version, in which I hope I have fixed it. (I just hope, because till I cannot reconstruct the error, I also cannot test the fix.).

Up to this, you still should be able to finish the minigame one time (not many really got it, as I mentioned above).
To beat it, just think about that's it's not like that in Sam&Max (despite it looks like). No fast clicking is required here, but to know, where the rat will occur next.
The tourists will give you some hints. ;)

Well, dang.  If the bug isn’t fixable, then I’m toast!  This game as a whole has been really fun though.  I haven’t asked around the circus people to get hints about the rat, but I have noticed that it is completely dependent on timing, whether you guess the correct hole or not.  I have tried to play it many times where I just WATCH to see if there’s a repeat pattern of which hole he comes out of in what order, but I’ve gotten several different patterns.  I don’t know if that’s supposed to happen though, or if my game is messed up?  Regardless, I will try to get the bug to repeat again so that I can report the error message.

Frustrating!  But only because I really like this game.  :(

I didn't said it isn't fixable. It just isn't testable!
You really didn't managed to finish the mini game without an error?

Try this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Direct after start:
-Hit onto the left hole (nearest to Grisush)
-Hit onto the right hole (widest from Grisush)
-Hit onto the top hole

Hey again!  Nope...I haven't been able to complete the mini-game without it crashing.  (Thank you for posting the quick spoiler though, so I could more easily re-try.)

Here is the error message:

"An error has occurred.  Please contact the game author for support, as this is likely to be a scripting error and not a bug in AGS.
in 'playerExtends.asc', line 42
from 'room102.asc', line 168
from 'room102.asc', line 200
Error: NewRoom: cannot run this command, since there was a NewRoom command already queued to run in 'playerExtends.asc', line 42."

--This is probably irrelevant info, but I thought I'd post it to you anyway, just in case.  I have no idea how game programming works, so I can't really distinguish "unfixable" from "untestable".  It's sad that I'm not able to complete it...I do know that if you ever put out an updated version one day that I'd be excited to make an attempt at replay.  It truly is a fun game.

Thank you for your error description. That sounds exactly like the bug I mentioned above. I'm also working on a new version in which I hope I have fixed it.
