Topic: Transformation
Set by Riaise.

Description: New year, new you! It is a time to make changes, although some are more dramatic than others. This month your game should focus on someone - or something - undergoing a transformation, whether a handsome prince is turned into a frog, the dowdy geek becomes a pretty prom queen, or that dusty old back room is renovated into a gamer's paradise. Change is coming, for better or for worse!

Rules: Someone or something must go through a visual/physical transformation at some point during the game.

Ending: January 31st

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Slasher

Mmmmmmmmmmm sounds very enticing....

I already have a few ideas brewing should I enter......

I hope my ideas are first up before they get pinched (laugh)

Riaise

Yay! I'm glad you're inspired by the theme, slasher. I hope you can get a game done! ;-D

Blondbraid

Sounds like a fascinating theme, though do the transformation has to be physical or can you have a protagonist that goes trough a mental transformation?

Riaise

I'd say that as long as there is some sort of visual representation, rather than just stating "this character has changed!", then it should be fine. Even just a change in facial expression should be enough. :)

Slasher

gameboy

I might transform into a game developer.

Mandle

That's absolutely beautiful gameboy!

A fixer-upper game after the apocalypse?

Kumpel

I think it's just Detroit :P

Great theme btw! I am excited to see the entries.
No time this month to do something on my own though... (roll)

Riaise

Thanks, Kumpel! I'm glad the theme is inspiring a few ideas, I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with, too. ;-D

Great idea, slasher, it sounds like it should a fun one! :-D

gameboy, that background looks amazing! I can't wait to play it! ;-D

selmiak

smells like Creamy, Emont and me have something cooking, the ingredients are very tasty, let's see what's for dinner (laugh)

Blondbraid

Seems people have some nice ideas going in this one, and gameboy's screenshot looks good, I like the clear-cut artstyle!

I have an idea of my own, and while I must admit I got this idea before this month, the sprites in this post are new,
of the same character at different points in the story, I guess you could consider this a teaser for my game idea:

"The communist party does not promote cowardice, and neither will I. As your commissar I don't care about your petty excuses about being outnumbered or surrounded or being sent into battle without ammo.
Anyone withdrawing from the line of fire is a coward and deserter and deserves exactly what's coming to them."

"W-wait now, I'm not a deserter! I'm a party commissar! Look, I got separated from my unit, and ended up behind enemy lines, ok? Alone behind enemy lines! Do you know what those guys do to commissars?! I only switched uniforms with a dead guy to come back to our lines! This is not my uniform, I'm a real commissar I swear! Oh dear god please don't do this to me, please, you have to believe me!!!"

They say the dress makes the man they say...

Slasher

You do some lovely graphics Blondbraid (nod)

Here's my in-production Teaser for 'Hyde and Seek' (laugh)

Riaise

That sounds intriguing, selmiak. I hope it all comes together!

Blondbraid, it sounds like you've got another inteeresting game lined up! And the sprites look great, as always. :)

Looking good, slasher! :-D

Slasher

Hyde and Seek is coming along nicely.

Most of the mechanics and sprites have be done though there is still quite a lot of work to be done so that should keep me busy for a week or so..

Meanwhile here is a video of the opening scene:

Sadly I can't see the video, but your previous screenshot and premise seems fun!

EDIT: OK, I've seen the video now and it seems like a fun game, I'm really curious of what outcomes there could be.

Slasher

QuoteI'm really curious of what outcomes there could be.
Well, that would depend on what you put into your body and its/their effects (laugh)

Mandle

Nice looking trailer, slasher. One slight issue for me though is that I find it a bit jarring reading the text of what the guy is saying while the singer is singing different words over the top. Is that the ingame music for this scene? Maybe it's just me but I feel an instrumental version might work better.

The music has indeed been changed to something else (instrumental)... What is in the video was a placeholder as it were.

The game is a bit tricky doing in places, but i will persevere....Meanwhile its going to plan, well almost (laugh)

Hyde and Seek

Story-line:

James Hyde is confined to his room and not allowed to venture outside, except to go to school. His parents disowned him from birth because he is 'different'. But that is about to change.

After reading an old chemistry book on 'Chemicals and the body' James sets about seeking out everyday ingredients in the hope that they will 'CHANGE' him into someone who his parents will accept into their 'family'.

Finding and then choosing the right combination of food stuff is not so easy and at times outrageous or nothing appears to happen, but perseverance is James' key to a successful CHANGE.

The moral of this story is that it only takes a change for things to be so different.

Game finished and now testing....

Wow, great work, slasher! I think there should be an extra category added to the Maggies - Speediest MAGS Creator! (laugh) I'll wait to play the game until the competition is over so that I can play all the entries together. :)

Blondbraid

Congratulations on the quick release, Slasher! I must say your pace is most admirable and I'll have to try your game when I get the time.
Meanwhile, I did this image for my game:

I suppose the title is a wordplay of sorts, I'm trying to come up with something catchy, though I must admit I'm worried that I'm using too obscure references.
The titular commissar is a Soviet political officer in WWII,
and contrapasso is what the poet Dante calls the ironic punishment sinners receive in hell.
Now this story doesn't take place in a literal hell, but I hope it might convey sort of the direction this story is going.
I also tried to add some symbolism just for the fun of it...

I know two sprites and a snappy title doesn't sound like too much now, but if you combine those two with all my artistic vision, my ambition and all my planning, you will get...

...two sprites and a snappy title...

selmiak

I decided to use a canvas- or rather gamesize of 240x135 and use dawnbringers 16 colors palette. The palette seemed to have way too little dark colors and I was about to introduce new colors just because, but then I didn't and stayed with it just because and I played around with lots of dithering and now I'm in love with the palette. The canvassize is really small so it's a bit faster than pixeling 320x240 but it's tricky to get a lot of detail in that size with that few colors. Here is a small teaser for you (with only 5 colors) :)
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/AHtOm9I.png[/imgzoom]

Gurok

That looks really good, Selmiak. The reuse of the yellow for the moon gives the reflection almost a perfect appearance. If not for the colour limits, I would be tempted to squeeze some shimmmer and height distortion into the reflection. It might complicate things too much and it looks lovely as is though.

Danvzare

Wow selmiak, that art is incredible. You've really outdone yourself with that palette.
I can't fathom how you're going to finish a whole game in one month with that kind of quality. But I'm certainly looking forward to seeing it. :-D

I don't know if he can walk but he can certainly get down and groovy.

selmiak

that's the advantage with having a small canvas. Don't pixel any feet and if anybody might ask just say there was no place for them in that resolution :D
He can also go all metal! \m/
[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/FItjcDH.gif[/imgzoom]

Onto the next one...and writing the story...

EDIT: I have the third puzzle set up and just have to code it... It is a very digital puzzle...

Mandle

Erm... It seems I made a slight calendar miscalculation. I kept thinking Wednesday was January 31st, and I'm really gonna need my half-day-off on Wednesday to get my entry finished.

Would anyone object to the deadline being extended to February 1st?

Slasher

I'm just posting to rest my head for a bit...

I'm still stuck trying to code the same puzzle I had working yesterday but have broken somehow...

So yeah...

4 hours of valuable time wasted with zero progress...

But I will soldier on even if I have to stay up all friggin' night!

Mandle

I got the coding kinda sorted out but, yeah...

I couldn't get the game finished...

However, I do have a playable first chapter done:

selmiak

@slasher: What is the quit bug? That there is no quit button? Yeah, you are right, but you are also right that Alt+X quits.

@shadow: it depends on where you transform, there is more to discover ;)

Slasher

The quit bug is where the game fails to shut down properly and you get windows pop up boxes and the mouse goes haywire at times..

There is a patch for this.

Tabata

Just played Black Morph and I feld the need to tell you right now that it is aaaawesome!
Nice gameplay, cute graphics and lovely story - you need to continue it.

I enjoyed testing the changes and to go on in the story.
And when I finally was able to 'defeat' the bird it was like 'yeah - now  take this, and take that and ...'

Hmmmm... I'm having some problems downloading Black Morph. I've tried twice now and the download keeps freezing and crashing.

I've heard of others having trouble downloading from Game Jolt. Any possibility of a mirror link?

Hyde and Seek by Slasher

Spoiler
This is a fun little game. I liked finding all of the items (shame there were no Jammie Dodgers, though! :P) and the after effects of the different concoctions were funny and effective. I know the moral of the story was perseverance, but I think there could still have been some slight hints as to which items should be used. Sometimes we need a little nudge in the right direction to know how to make a change! ;)

Black Morph team: While playing I got an internal error that shut down the game and gave the following message. "Error: Unable to render character 11 (New character) because loop 1 does not exist in view 35". I assume I just did some unexpected interaction to cause this to happen.

I know it's just a demo so I'm not sure if it just cuts off or if there is a clear end point. I'll try to play again later.

Decided to give it one more go before bed and there was something to let me know I completed the demo.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Creamy

Thanks for reporting the bug, Twirlly. I hope you enjoyed the game nonetheless.

Blondbraid

I've played both Shunday, Black morph and Hyde and seek, and while the puzzles of Shunday really weren't my cup of tea, it was sort of a fun idea with making counting on your fingers a puzzle.
Hyde and seek also had some frustrating trial and error, but the punchline at the end had me giggling.  (laugh)
Black morph had both interesting game mechanics as well as excellent pixel-art, it would be cool to se it made into a longer game.

I'm sorry I never managed to make an entry for this month, I got busy with other things and never made much of my concept, the one I described earlier with the commissar getting mistaken for a deserter,
but I have been thinking about making a regular AGS game of that concept instead, if anyone thinks it would be worth it.

@ Blondbraid : I'll be glad to come back to Stalingrad - so to speak - no matter if we play sniper, spotter or a commissar.

With all the games I've been playing for the AGS awards, I forgot to report about Hyde and Seek :  the puzzle felt random but I liked the sweet outcome. I didn't see that coming.

When this MAGS competition is over, there'll be an update of Black Morph to fix the problems that have been reported. I'll probably stop working on the game afterwards because Selmiak wants a complete overhaul of the game that I disagree with.

selmiak

A complete overhaul of 2,5 rooms, don't be ridiculous. It's for making a better game and making morph great again.

Creamy

It's not just a matter of work. I also happen to prefer the game the way it is :P
I won't stop you revamping/continuing it though, as long as the current demo is still available.

Speaking of unfinished games, what happened to gameboy's boarded house?

Stupot

Three days left to vote, guys. Don't forget.

And while you're there, what do you think of using the poll for voting as opposed to PMing the MAGS Host? I must say we got a few more votes than normal this month. I would say that's the bottom line then. If the system appeals to more people, as I guess it would, being more modern and all, then it's a better system.

I think the problem before was that really only MAGS vets knew to click the link in the specific post by the MAGS host to get to the link to the PM, and even then there was no structure to follow unless they had read how to vote.

People like to just click on boxes and have it all automated. Nothing wrong with that of course. And if it gets more voters then go for it I say.

@Riaise - To be fair I pretty much always post the results pretty shortly after the deadline closes.

@Twirlly - We stopped using the MAGS site because of an incident that highlighted the fact that non-forum members could vote and I wanted to keep it members only. Using the forum poll kind of bridges that gap; I still can't see who is voting (which would be ideal, personslly) but at least they have to be signed up members.

Oh, I didn't mean it in that sense, you do a great job with running the MAGS. :) I wasn't sure if the poll would show the result after it was closed, or if it would still be hidden and you would post it as usual. I just meant that it was nice to be able to see the result visually (Cassie and Mandle are clearly enjoying it :P). Sorry about that, I should have worded it better.

Yay! Thanks to our voters  :-D
As blackudder would put it, we'll try to come up with a cunning theme that's cunning.
