Trying a mixed 3d/2d technique, also with some photo edit... Thoughts?

Do you like this at all? :)

Background is a photo rendered as a plane in 3d, while the cabin and stuff around it are full 3d models.

Very good, but beware of the whites, when you plan a 3d the whites get darker.

I rather like it. I think it looks good.
The plain backdrop works very well with the lone 3D model.

gameboy

I like it.

I would lose the contrasting shadow on the wall. It looks out of place on a grey sunless winter day.

Thank you all :)

Experimenting a little more with lighting in Gimp, post-render in Blender:

Looking for feedback on lighting mostly (eg of the sky, and if it looks alive or not). These aren't the final color tones or the finished models/textures.

I like the new style very much.
I think the suspension of disbelief comes from the tall, flat white wall. Add a few details there, or a bush in front of it, or a slope of snow at its bottom; and it will look cool.
Also that wall is very very thick compared t othe houses' walls. Not very realistic.

KyriakosCH

Thanks. Yes, the wall is a bit sturdier than expected, and looks it too in the second pic's left half...

Will be improved later on, and other objects will be added.

Another of the locations (not done; more buildings will be added, etc), the village:

I like it. (nod)
The snow seems very rough though. As though it might be concrete or something.
Is there any softer textures you could use for the snow?

Here's a quick example of what I mean. And I did this by just applying a bit of blur to the snow.

And here's another example, with a different type of blur.

KyriakosCH

Agreed, i will definitely change the snow texture by the end :D

Are the colours too yellow? Any other suggestion about colours/lighting?

I love the colours and lighting, I think they add some nice atmosphere to the whole background.

About the last background: While I like the render more than the first you posted with the thick walls, I think the foreground and background don't blend as nicely as the others did because of the different colors.

Mouth for war

I always liked the idea of using real photos for games, especially for a horror game (even did a walkcycle of myself :-D ) this looks pretty cool!
mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, next to soccer

maybe put some 3d trees in front of the background, it looks so flat.
