Worth continuing this 2D/3D mix?

Some screen shots related to a possible RoN game:

Elandra may not be in the game, but I had her walkcycle handy, so stuck her in the scenes.

These are a mix of 2D characters and my 3D modeled environments (modeled with Anim8or, and rendered in Bryce). Not sure how grating this is. Open to comments.

I wouldn't say that I don't like them, because I honestly think games come in all shapes, styles and colors that are fun. But a "Ghost" once told me that I should try and keep one style for my own game by not mixing resolutions and I'm glad that I followed what he said. Again, this was for my own game and my own experience, so that doesn't mean you should listen to me. But I was glad that I did.

But it was also different circumstances. My character and backgrounds were in one resolution, and I had some pictures and smaller stuff in a different resolution.

I find the mix a bit clashing at the moment with this character example. The main thing for me is the solid blocks of colour on the character. If the character was shaded a bit more I think it might look fine to my eye.

what mandle said, some more shading on the character, some more colors make her better blend with the bg. maybe. maybe add some subtle red or green tint to the character depending on the room.

You could trace over the 3D. It would be good experience, and honestly, it's not too hard. Having 3D as a guide makes it a simple case of finding the outlines and picking good fill colours. I don't think I did an especially good job, but I also don't think that's necessary for a RON background. This took me about 2 hours.

Just something I noticed about the first one: those stools appear to be almost the same height as the tables. I suppose that's possible, but I thought it might make sense they were lower, as you'd want some way to sit at the tables.

I like them. They clash a bit, but I think that's acceptable for a RON game.

In my opinion, I think it would work better (and be easier) if the backgrounds were made to match the character, rather than making the character match the background. Such as changing the textures on the backgrounds to make them more like solid blocks of colours, and seeing if you can put some cel-shading on it.

That being said, I think Gurok's suggestion would work the best.

General thank you to everyone for the comments, and a special thank you to Gurok for the paint over (and the two hours you'll never get back :P).

Here's the source image I based it on:

You'll note the actual image has a chair by one of the tables. The bar is higher, and the stools are meant for the bar. Looks like I should raise the bar and the stools, doesn't it.

Thanks, again!

Have you considered reducing the image size and then reducing the color count in order to get some quick pixel type graphics? These examples only took a few minutes and i think the character would fit in better. (Sorry I didn't bother to cut the character out before working on the images.)

jwalt, you could try and render the pictures with just basic color, instead of using image textures. They would probably clash less. ;)

Hey, that's what I was trying to say.
Although I clearly did a poor job of explaining it. (laugh)

Uhfgood

the 2d character kind of sticks out.  Not real bad but still does.  Try to keep your backgrounds a little more flat shaded maybe?
