This is not totally meant as a guess to the puzzle, however it does fit all the clues as far as I know, but still unsure of what kind of "feast" it was.
The father troll was abusive so the mother troll poisoned him and tried to cook him.
The offspring troll saw what the mother did to his dad so he killed the mother (stabbing/shooting don't know).
Then the offspring troll wanting food ate the father troll and died from the poison.

no need to respond, just throwing out ideas. however question.
did the offspring eat one of the parents?

Incorrect. (It doesn't fit the answer that none of them died by poison.)

still unsure of what kind of "feast" it was.

Isn't that pretty much explained by the answers so far? Maybe I'm not seeing some alternative interpretation...

To possibly make the case clearer, I'll try something different in the organization of answers:

Case #3
A family of three are found dead. Two are dressed in their finest clothes, and the third is wearing an apron.
What happened?

The Victims:

Yes (nod)
Were they trolls?
Were two of them married?
(presumably)
Father and mother?
Was there a child?
(in the sense of offspring)
Were the parents (Mother and Father) the ones dressed in their finest clothes?

No (wrong)
Are they the kind of troll that turn to stone in the sunlight?

Superseded clues:
Spoiler
Yes (nod)
Are we in some kind of fantasy setting?
Are we dealing with mythical creatures?

No (wrong)
Are all three humans?
Was at least one a human?
Is at least one of them an animal?
(debatable, but not what you'd usually call an animal, anyway)
Does the triad consist of artificial intelligence?
Were the two well-dressed bodies inflatable dolls?
Are any of them food products?
Was it a family of elves?
... dwarves?
... fairies?
Does the triad consist of aliens?
Are the three unicellular beings?
Are we dealing with cyclops?
(they could be cyclopic, actually, but it doesn't come into the story)
[close]
The Context:

Yes (nod)
Was it a barbecue party that had gone bad?
(not exactly barbecue, and the party didn't have a chance to start, but close enough; let's say a feast)
Were the two wearing the finest clothes when they died?

No (wrong)
Are the three in a funeral dynasty / crematorium?
Had [the other invited guests] already arrived when the three died?
Were the two well-dressed bodies in caskets?
Does the 'finest clothes' refer to some form of hide or fur?
(not terribly relevant, but not apparently)

Irrelevant :X
Were other people (except for the three victims) invited to the party? (yes, but they don't come into the story; also, "people")

The Deaths:

Yes (nod)
Did at least two of them die from the same reason?
(more or less)
Is cannibalism involved?
Were any of the "people" (or parts of them) cooked?
Were they killed by the person or people they were trying to eat?

No (wrong)
Is a help to suicide involved?
Did one kill the other two?
Did at least one die of natural causes?
Did the one with the apron die of starvation?
Is at least one of them suffocated?
Did at least one of them die by poison?
Did at least one die from electroschock?
Did they [all] die at the same time?
Did (at least) one die by petrification?
Were [any of them] dressed after death?
(in the story I've taken it from the answer is debatable, but I changed/messed up one detail, making it a straight-up no)
Did the person who was eating the others die because he ate them?
Did the person who was eating the others die from suffocation?
Did the person who was eating the others die by poison inside the body of the others?
Did the offspring eat one of the parents?

Unanswerable or Ambiguous :-\

Was the feast some special occasion?
and would knowing what the occasion is help in solving the case?

Was it a celebration of something like the Day of the Dead (Día de muertos)?
Are the two chosen ones to be a sacrifice?
Did at least one of them die by someone else (not by one of the three gone dead)?
Was at least one of them drowned?

Kumpel

Is the killer one of the three trolls?

Solution

Ahhhhh...! It's the scene from The Hobbit where the three trolls are going to eat Bilbo but argue so much that the sun comes up and turns them to stone!

Bugger.... No it's not... :(

Question: Is this story from Beowulf?

@mandle: sun->stone is off the table already...

Were one of the three trolls intended to be cooked?

Many of you seem to have gotten stuck on a wrong track (though a couple of questions at least make the right fundamental assumption), and I'm not sure why. There's an answer from a while back that I thought for sure would pretty much give away the whole thing. I think perhaps you're overthinking it, or maybe getting hung up on some minor detail that doesn't seem to fit with the obvious solution? I recommend you go through the answers so far and look for ones that provide definite information. It should be enough to propose a partial theory (a sort of "police report" of what you know about the case, leaving out the things you don't yet understand), and once I have confirmed that you can start filling in the details.

Case #3
A family of three are found dead. Two are dressed in their finest clothes, and the third is wearing an apron.

Okay I got a serious problem with:
QuoteWere any of the "people" (or parts of them) cooked?
and
QuoteIs cannibalism involved?
Because of these two I always thought "people" is refering to the three dead trolls you are mentioning in the story, but now I think none of the trolls were cooked, but other "people".

Was the person they tried to cook a human?
Is it relevant to know who/what the person is that survived?
Were more than the four involved?
Is the number of overall involved people relevant?

And we still dont know how the trolls got killed.

Were at least one of the trolls killed with a weapon or a weaponized kitchen tool?
Is the murder weapon relevant to solve the case?

And this one is interesting
QuoteDid the cook make a mistake during the preparation or process of cooking? (in a way, but not in the way you probably mean)
Are the trolls blind?
Did the troll cook forget to turn on the fire?
Did the "ingredient(s)" simulate(d) to be cooked but waited for the right time to kill the trolls?

So maybe the little troll caught a human for the first time but instead of killing him instantly and eating him after that, his/her parent-like relatives wanted to do a feast out of his/her first ever catch. The two put on nice cloths, while the son/daughter prepared him/herself to cook his/her first by him/herself caught human with putting the apron on as his/her mother taught him. But in their business they didn't think of the human anymore and so he broke out of his cage or whatever, took a knife, the son/daughter of course sharpened before he/she put on the apron and killed the young wannabe cook. After that he waited for the parents to appear and killed the parents in their finest cloths. THE END??? (laugh)

Because I am sure, that that's not exactly the answer:

Was the cook killed first?
Were the three trolls always in one "room"/cave/near the fireplace?

Pretty close! The details that are wrong are either irrelevant or almost impossible to figure out by blindly guessing. There's just one key detail missing, and it's about how you account for this question:

Were any of the "people" (or parts of them) cooked? (YES)

(That thing I told you not to focus on before, now might be the time to focus on it.)

Yes (nod)
Was the cook killed first?

So piggybacking off of Kumpel's fine solution:

The prisoner escaped his shackles and pushed the child troll into the broth, boiling him alive, then he waited for the parents to come and killed them too.
