Did he throw the knife too early? Before she had reached her position?

dayowlron

was it supposed to be a fake knife but wound up being a real knife?

This fact can clearly be seen,                  Don't you know?

Case #4
Dozens of yells were heard as one was dead from one second to another. What happened?

Yes (nod)
Is the one who died a human?
Was it an accident?
Was the one who died engaged in some form of sport?
Are those who yelled watchers?
Were the yells in response to whatever caused the death?
Did the performance take place inside a building/tent?
Was it a showman whose performance went terribly wrong? (CLOSE ENOUGH TO BE A YES FROM NOW ON. Actually spot on yes. Must have been the sleep deprivation...
When you say "dozens of yells", was that approximately the size of the audience?
Was she killed by another person (or multiple people)?
Was she a circus performer?
Or is it a kind of sport to saw the assistant of the magician literally? (nod)
Was she assisting in some kind of stunt, such as acting as the target for a knife thrower?[/b] (nod)(nod)(nod) (But for me it's a sport, not a stunt :-[)
Would it have ended differently if she was male? (We are living in modern times  but I in this historic event I am pretty sure of that)
Was the knife thrower blindfolded?
Was it actually a knife-throwing act?
Did the act involve impressive accuracy?
Did the act involve a dangerous object (or objects) of some kind?
Was she killed by a thrown knife?
Was the knife thrower supposed to be completly blind during the act (as in, normally they cheated and only pretended he was blind)?
Could she move freely while the knives were thrown?
Had they done the same act before?
Does it matter which knife killed her? (Normally a knive thrower throws more than one.) (He would have for sure, but this time see next question)
Was it the first knife [that killed her]?

No (wrong)
Was it murder?
Did he die on stage? (no, but close)
Did something fall on the victim?
Did more than one person die?
Was he himself to blame for the accident? (Maybe work on this once more. It's close to yes ;) )
Did the victim perform that sport alone?
Was the dead person male? (Even if it doesn't matter, just to make the pronouns easier) (It matters!)
Was she killed by some kind of mechanical/equipment failure?
Was a third person involved in some way?
Was she blindfolded?
Did she move when she wasn't supposed to?
Did the act involve a feat of strength?
Was the victim herself doing anything impressive, not merely playing a part to exhibit the abilities of someone else? (Are these two questions? (wtf))
Was the victim the person handing the knives to the thrower, moved behind the thrower who then accidentally managed to throw it backwards at the victim?
Was the victim tied up?
Did she put the blindfold on the knife thrower?
Was she tied to something?
was she tied to a spinning wheel?
Did the thrower tie her up?
Second? Third? Fourth? [knife that killed her]
was it supposed to be a fake knife but wound up being a real knife?
Did he throw the knife too early? Before she had reached her position?

Other/older/superseded/maybe not very helpful Noes
Spoiler
Were they watching a public execution?
Did the victim drown?
Did someone push a button?
Did something explode?
Did the accident happen on a street?
Was the one who died, on a roof just before dying?
Was the one who died engaged in some form of stunt?
Did he die from anything medical condition?
Did the stands collapse at a sports arena?
Did  the victim play a ball game?
Was it in the middle of a battlefield?
Was the one who died, on a roof just before dying?
Was the person wearing or supposed to be wearing a parachute or something else to soften a fall?
Was the person in a vehicle/machine of some kind?
Was the person who died taking part in an athletics event?
did the person fall onto something that caused his death?
Was a sprinter shot by the start signal pistol?
Was the victim a high rope artist who's partner missed to catch her?
Did the victim perform a pole dance when the pole broke?
Did she die from a fall from a high place?
Was she sky diving and her parachute failed?
Was she bungee jumping? (if so) Did the elastic failed causing her death? (better ignore the "falling" for now. Just a logical consequence and maybe won't help you to solve the case atm.)
Was she hit by one of her mates during synchronous swimming?
Was it an accident during rhythmic sports gymnastics?
Was it unlucky slipping of a mud wrestling fighter?
Was is an accident during ice skating (couple running/dancing) - the male scater lost control/hold and therefor the female got hurt deadly?
Did they play rollerderby when the accident happens?
Did one or more animals take part?
Was it a crash at an airshow?
Was she on the bottom of a human pyramid?
Was the clown car involved?

Was the victim a cheerleader? (not exactly, but close to that)
Was she a dancer of some kind? (Trying to think of what's similar to a cheerleader)
Were the yells in response to the death?
Did the yells (directly or indirectly) cause the death?
Did they yell to try to warn her about something? Was she doing a trapeze act
Was it some kind of illusion?
Was she a human cannonball?
Was a saw actually involved?
[close]

Irrelevant, Unanswerable or Ambiguous :-\
Did the victim fall? (when, where, why?)
Is the knife thrower male (and does this matter?) (In the story it's a man, but actually the sex of the thrower is irrelevant)
Did she put the blindfold on the knife thrower?

Cassiebsg

keep wondering why does it matter that she was a woman... so...

- Was she wearing high heels? (if so) Did one broke making her lose balance and miss her mark?
- Did she stop to touch up her makeup?  (roll)
- Did she say something to the knife  thrower that make him lose his concentration?
- Was she herself to blame for the accident?  (laugh)

Stupot

Was the woman distracted by a noise and that's why she moved?
Did the knife go into her head?
Heart?
Stomach?
Is it relevant where the knife went?

Yupp - that's spot on my problem, too. (nod)
If the one who threw the knife wasn't blindfolded I'd say she might have lost her top and irritated him because he saw her naked the first time or something like this. But it doesn't work without him watching her. Also there's no need for a female to scare him that he winced ...

This seems to be my 'it's close to'-case anyway (roll)
... so I am waiting for you others to find out.

Edit:
Aah - one more idea (thanks to Cassie):
Was the first knife supposed to go over her head and because of her wearing high(er) heels instead of the usual shoes becoming taller ... and therefor the knife hit her forehead?

Mandle

I think the fact that she is female was only to lead us to the knife throwing act conclusion. Kumpel mentions something about historical context in his reply, and, in the past at least, knife thrower's assistants were pretty much always young women, I guess to provide that extra attention-grabber for bored dads dragged to the circus by their kids...

So I think we can ignore that aspect now.

But then it would have ended the same way if the assistant were male. I asked that.

This also can't be, because she didn't move (when she wasn't supposed to).

I also had the idea that someone in the audiance whistled because the assistant was so sexy (or something along these lines) and distracted the knife thrower, but this also doesn't fit, because then a third person would have been involved.I'm confused.

It feels like we're all missing something very obvious.

That was indeed the sad fate of the knife thrower's female assistant 8-0 :~( (roll)
She assisted him for years and always wore the same shoes. But one day the heel of one of her shoes broke and she put on a different pair. The knife thrower's accuracy level had become almost godlike, but when she wore shoes only a few inch/cm higher, he couldn't see that because he was blindfolded when she walked on the stage. And then the show began and ... ended forever.

Stupot

Ahh nice twist. Is that from one of the cards or did you make it up?

Kumpel

It's part of the game "Black Stories", yeah. But every deadly event in there is historically acurate and provable - or that is at least, what you can read in the manual ;)

Yay! That was a really fun round, and a satisfying conclusion , Kumpel. Thanks for the fun!

But, I'm not sure if I deserve that title: I mostly bumbled around like a certain fictional French detective (no, not the clever one... oh wait, he might be from Belgium) and made loudmouthed guesses without absorbing all the information, or just piggybacked off what others had discovered...

Oh wait, maybe that is a good way to get a promotion!

If you have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Trouble is, I stood on the shoulders of giants and got distracted by something shiny down on the ground. (laugh)

Tabata

Gaaah! That really was correct?
Unbelievable that I got it!
In fact I got on the wrong track mostly because of that it had to be a female and that I wouldn't define her part of the scene as a kind of sport.
It might be a kind of sport for the knife-thrower but the womans part I'd assign more to a stunt. (roll)
But it was an entertaining case and very interesting for me to learn about typical female sports during the research.  (laugh)

Well, I am on my way to work right now and wouldn't be able to start a new case before this late afternoon. Also I just have a very simple beginners-story in mind for now.
So I'd like to give the chance to Cassie to come up with the next case ...

Cassiebsg

Erm.... I'm blank! I wouldn't even know where to begin.  8-0

I'll wait for your " very simple beginners-story".  :-D
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Tabata

Okay â€" your wish is my command!
Here's a clean and easy little case
(and no playing cards involved â€" so please don't even ask) (laugh)

Keep it coming!CASE # 5:
Fred was found lying on the floor in a puddle of water - dead.
An open window is to be seen and several glass shards are spread along the ground.
What happened?

Keep it coming!

Cassiebsg

Did Fred drawn?
Are the glass shard from the window?
Was he washing the windows?
Did he die from a fall?
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

CaptainD

Snarky

Was Fred murdered?
Did he commit suicide?

Was he shot?
Did he ingest (drink/eat) glass shards?
