The Lurker says "Wakey-wakey all you sleepyheads!"

He cackles, turns around, and throws a knife perfectly through the projector window.

You all hear a scream and then the movie screen slowly starts dripping red from the top down.

I am still confused (because I thought about the possibility that asking the same question twice
isn't enough to be sure - what if the first given answer wasn't a lie but the second?)

Since I don't want to terrorise you all by asking the same question a third time
I'll risk a guess and say:

        Dreamcatcher

It isn't enough to be sure, that's true, but remember the betrayer can only change one reasked question per round sooo... ;)

And actually I'd say that reasking three or even more times is a perfectly acceptable strategy in the case of this game.

It's too much, man. I'm impressed by the creativity, the effort and atmosphere you're putting in, it's great stuff, but having to brute-force the puzzle by re-asking the same questions over and over just to be relatively confident in the answers... no thanks.

I'll just guess David Bowie's Goblin King from Labyrinth. It fits some answers, and maybe the ones that don't fit are lies.

Stupot

I've written some questions on the previous page that haven't been dealt with yet.

I want to keep playing but it's hard. Maybe it would help (a little) if we had a number of how many answers are false.

Mandle

The Lurker says "The betrayer has figured out who he/she/it is already, which means you have asked all the questions needed to do so. Perhaps it is best to not muddy the waters further?"

(Updating in about 12+ hours from now. Anyone can freely edit their posts until then without consequence.)

Riaise

OK, I don't think the betrayer can be from another dimension and be an extra-terrestrial, it must be one or the other. So, I'm going to try extra-terrestrial and say:

A Pod Person from Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

Oh, and also - poor projectionist. :(

Stupot

So The person who is the betrayer has guessed it already? Did they guess it in the thread or privately?
I've only got one guess left and it could be literally anything still.

Privately.

I'm going to have to update tomorrow probably as I had some more RL stuff crop up yesterday and today. So anyone is still welcome to edit any of their posts in the meanwhile.

Mandle

Well, I've been wracking my brain over the last few days to find a way to bring this game back from the state it's currently in where nobody is really interested much in continuing.

I thought that a mastermind kind of challenge where questions could be reasked and the players could form a kind of majority pool of "correct" answers to base their guesses on might be fun, but obviously not.

So what I have finally decided to do is have a

ROLLBACK

and swap out the rules a bit as well:

The game reverts to the condition of the last update, which I will post below, and all posts made between then and now are ignored, as I feel some were probably made out of desperation or (more likely) a lack of caring.

As the betrayer has done a good job of confusing everyone, almost too good it seems (laugh), they are considered safe from death by The Lurker.

Also, the betrayer now loses their power to change answers, but may still ask questions as normal and/or make guesses.

I'm also removing the death-threat for wrong guesses completely to speed things along (I really want to finish the game before Halloween and act 3 is still waiting in the wings), but players may make only one guess per update.

However, up to 6 questions may be asked per player per update and these questions are no longer limited to horror tropes. For example: "Is the betrayer male?" is now an acceptable question.

Reasking old questions is also fine, and advisable, as some of them are quite valuable.

The player who makes the first correct guess of the betrayer's true identity is safe from death at the end of the round.

A different player will be chosen at random by The Lurker.

Hopefully this fixes things a bit...

Riaise

OK, so all of the answers from now on will be true. That will make things easier. (nod) It also means that all of our previous guesses were wrong, so I suppose it's back to the drawing board. :-D I'm going to just re-ask questions that we've already had:

Does the betrayer have special abilities?
Does the betrayer use a secret identity?
Can the betrayer be harmed with ordinary weapons (knives, guns, etc.)
Is the betrayer sometimes inactive for a longer time span (months, years, centuries...)?
Can the betrayer change its appearance?
Is the betrayer a disembodied being?

Snarky

So from now on answers are definitely true? OK, I'll try to get it rolling again (edit: foiled by Riaise!) by verifying some questions that seem important:

SO, is the betrayer extra-terrestrial OR NOT?
Is the betrayer REALLY from another dimension?
Is the betrayer REALLY able to take over/control the body of his victim?
Is the betrayer REALLY NOT undead?
Is the betrayer REALLY NOT humanoid?
Does the betrayer REALLY drink blood?

(The all-caps words are just to clarify what answers have already been given. Since yes/no answers to negative questions can be confusing, please remove those parts in answering. I also suggest striking out answers that have since been contradicted and keeping the "Maybe Yes/No" answers separate from the "Definite Yes/No" answers)

Dracula, is that you?

This speculation requires the following answers to be wrong:
Does the betrayer target children? - Yes x2 (I think, right?)
Has the betrayer ever spent time in an insane asylum or other psychiatric facility? - No
Is (or was) the betrayer at some part of the movie a human being? - No
Is the betrayer a loner? - No
Does the betrayer kill directly (rather than using traps, etc.)? - No
Can the betrayer change its appearance? - No
Is the betrayer some kind of ghost or spirit? - No x2 (Arguably!)
Is the betrayer able to fly? - No

Answers in bold font are all to questions answered since the rollback and thus are 100% correct.

Answers that were switched by the betrayer (Who now deserves to be updated to proper noun status as well) The Betrayer but have been proven false are now scored out.

SUDDENLY!!!

You all hear a winch turning and a hooded figure bound to a chair appears above the movie screen and is lowered down on wires through the flickering projector light until they sit struggling futilely on the narrow stage below the movie screen.

The Lurker says "Gaze upon the one of your fellows who was kidnapped and replaced by my betrayer. Excuse my post-exposition as this will factor in just a little bit further down the line..."

And then says "And errrr, yeah, BOO! Stabby-kill-kill thing I usually do."

He cackles, turns around, and throws a knife perfectly through the projector window.

You all hear a scream and then the movie screen slowly starts dripping red from the top down, eventually over the form of one of your friends bound to that chair.

The Lurker says "Rollbacks are so awesome! I get to kill twice!"

Dracula, is that you?

The Betrayer shakes their head.

That's a "No"...

Stupot

I know we're testing previous questions, but we never did get answers for the questions I asked on the previous page:

Is the betrayer the result of experimentation?
Is the betrayer able to enter a dwelling without opening a door or window?
Is the betrayer the creation of someone's imagination?

Snarky

These questions by Riaise weren't (re)answered, either:

QuoteCan the betrayer change its appearance?
Is the betrayer a disembodied being?

Is the betrayer a vampire? (I never really understood the tropes rule, but anyway I guess this is OK now)
Does the betrayer target children?
Does the betrayer kill directly (rather than using traps, etc.)?
Is the betrayer male (or present as male)?
Is the betrayer a foreigner (relative to where their most famous movie mostly takes place)?
Does the betrayer appear physically attractive (at least in some forms)?
