(man oh man do I hope this idea wasn't done before)
A new Point-and-click thriller game

It's just another fun "escape the room" game, right?

The player wakes up in a room and they need to solve puzzle to get out. The formula's there.

But something's amiss. Puzzle elements start to get more and more abstract.

You keep escaping room after room after room for what? There's just more rooms! It's like you're not even escaping at all.

There's more at play than just four walls...

Goals:

  • Combine hand drawn and pixel art visuals fluidly
  • Experiment with various art styles
  • Test experimental mechanics/story elements
  • Make a serious project with good atmosphere and story
  • Engage the player with few, basic mechanics.

Progress:

  • Story: 100%
  • Visuals:80%
  • Programming/Puzzle design: 96%

Like a reoccurring nightmare (laugh)

Sounds fun (nod)

selmiak

hmmm, innovative gameplay/story that breaks out of the box, sounds interesting :D

SilverSpook

Fascinating! Good luck with this man.

Speaking as someone who's not especially interested in traditional escape the room games, I have to admit that this one looks very interesting.

Stupot

I love escape the room games. I'll be keeping an eta out for this one.

Glenjamin

Glad to see you guys are interested!

If you guys are into analyzing story elements and little details I think you'll have a good time with this one.

There's monsters too, but I'm trying to keep them subtle as not to overshadow everything else.

Here's a sneak peek:

Glenjamin

Having each room be a different art style is a lot of fun. I think I'll have enough tricks up my sleeve to keep things interesting.

Here's some W.I.P's of rooms in the game. Expect a trailer soon!

All outdoor locations are rooms but not all rooms are outdoor locations:

Making the SFX is the best part of this room:

This game really makes me realize how important character designs and background layouts are to game design. The size of the player character alone can change how the entire game functions.

Here's a new screengrab:

Nice work! Those are some trippy flying things!

QuoteNice work! Those are some trippy flying things!

Thanks! They're actually my take on dragons/griffins.

Basically it's theorized that griffins are the culmination of early human's natural predators: Eagles, Snakes, and Big cats.

The same goes for dragons, a theory on why they appear in almost every culture around the world is our ancient predators are embedded into human conscience.

I didn't like the way they already looked, so I took the most notable pieces of each predator and made it my own.

Just a quick update with some rooms and some animations!

This came out better than I expected, still no clue on how to animate it (laugh)

The following gifs are completely unrelated, It's not an action game. ;)

Hey these are awesome! I love the surface lighting!
The animations are really well made (nod)
Keep up!

Matti

Those flying beasts sure look creepy! Nicely animated too.

Glenjamin

We've got a title screen!

This is not a river rapids simulator either

The main problem i'm finding when designing this game is the pacing. Making sure there's enough rooms between story elements means having to work on rooms that are mundane, not exactly my specialty.

I was losing focus but I'm back on the horse. I think the design/rooms are set. Now all that's left to do is make them!

It should be done within the next few weeks.

Welcome to the last pre-launch update!

Escape the room's story is now 100% complete, and the room layouts are finished. All that's left to do is implement the rest.

Now onto the rooms/animations:

Animal walk cycles are probably my favorite. This little monkey goes on quite the in-game journey.

The more traditional room escape levels aren't quite as boring to draw as I originally pinned them for.

This might not be the FINAL version of this particular background.

I'm getting the hang of run/walk animations. Soon enough I'll be able to breathe more life into them, but for now this does the job.

Until next time!

Escape the room is in the final stage of development: Playtesting.

ETR took as much extra time as needed. Hopefully you'll agree it was worth the wait.

Copies have been sent to playtesters, and we anticipate to have the game out by the 6th the LATEST. (For real this time)

See you at the end of the world.
