Re monster movies, Relic was pretty well-made. Mostly because the Kothoga is a very cool monster:

Relic was pretty well-made.
Did we watch the same movie?
Takes place in a museum? Based on a book?
Maybe it's because I had read the book first...

KyriakosCH

Afaik the book is regarded as being a lot better, and seems to be very different from the movie.
But as monster movies go, the Relic was pretty good (nod)

Well, now I at least know why A Sound of Thunder was one of the movies I was thinking of that was a poor adaptation of a book comparable to The Relic. Apparently it was directed by the same guy...
Honestly, I don't remember much about the book since it's been 12 or 13 years since I read it. But I do remember enjoying it. The movie was mediocre at best. I'd put it as being almost as underwhelming as when I watched the movie version of the Puppet Masters...
But I will admit it's a better adaptation than The Neverending Story 2 or 3.

The Relic is an enjoyable enough B-movie, despite some silly logic (the book was also fairly silly, but for different reasons) and dated CG. It's also a seriously under-lit movie; the director, Peter Hyams, has a habit of doing this (see also End of Days), and it can be somewhat annoying when you can't make out what's happening in certain scenes.

A Sound of Thunder, on the other hand, is a disaster of Battlefield Earth proportions, with CG that would've looked terrible in 1995, never mind 2005. Evidence of it's journey through production hell is quite apparent when you watch it all the way through (if you can make it)!

I hope that LimpingFish won't mind if i use his list template (given that i also plan to keep some of the movies he named as well :D )

So here is my list, using his template:

Curses/witches:
Suspiria (ITA, 1977) (if we go by "curse", 'It Follows' can be a suggestion too)

Demonic/possession:
The Blackcoat's Daughter (US, 2015)

Undead (zombies/vampires)
(not really my kind of thing... maybe the original 24 days?)

Ghosts
(again, not my thing. Don't have anything to suggest)

Slasher flick
Phenomena (ITA, 1985) (awesome music theme too)

Psychological horror
The Tenant (Polanski movie)

Creatures/Monsters
The Thing (Carpenter)

Comedy/parody
(i dislike comedy-horror :) Maybe the recent Cabin in the woods?)

Miscellaneous horror
Lord of Tears (scottish movie)

Miscellaneous non-horror
A tale of two sisters (japanese)

A Tale of Two Sisters is a great film. Would you really class that as non-horror though? I think it's very much a horror film. It's also Korean, not Japanese, unless we're talking about different films.

Ok, Korean :-D

Well, it is supposed to be purely psychological (a sustained delusion).
Not sure what entirely "non-horror" can be part of the list. In what way did you mean it? Is it about "film which happens to have a few scares, while not meaning to cause fright"? In that case... i am not sure i have anything to suggest... I tend to view such films as "psychological horror" :)
Maybe "Inland Empire" by Lynch? (which i also regard as being 'psychological horror')

By “non-horror” I mean any film of any genre.

Quote from: OP
As you can see, I've included a non-horror option with the idea that we could have a little breather from horror at regular intervals throughout the month. If people think that's a lame idea we can scrap it.

KyriakosCH

Meh ^_^

Still going to suggest Inland Empire :=

To me, non-horror in this case is something that's not horror at all. But could take place on Halloween or such.

Which means that The Neverending Story 3 wouldn't count. It take place partially on Halloween, but I can think of no scarier movie taking place on Halloween... *shudders*

But my recommendation was Spaced Invaders. It takes place on Halloween, has the girl from Jurassic Park, and has stupid aliens trying to take over the world.

What about gore as a category? I'd recommend "Bone Tomahawk". Nice, tense atmosphere followed by great gore.

Curses/witchcraft: The Witches of Eastwick (I apologize for nothing)
    Possession/demonic: The Exorcist (a classic)
    Undead (zombies/vampires): Train to Busan
Ghost stories: Thirteen Ghosts (2001 version. The most 90s movie ever made)
Slasher flicks: April Fools Day (1986)
Psychological horror: Picnic at Hanging Rock
    Creatures/monsters: The Fly (1986)
    Comedy/parody: Hausu
Miscellaneous horror: CHUD (I just love it)
Miscellaneous not-necessarily horror: Moon (creepy sci-fi)

Chud is to the monster genre what Sleepaway Camp is for slashers. (laugh)
Can't get more b-movieish than that!

So, how long until step 3? You said you'd give it a week, and it's been 2. Or are we on unofficially on step 3?
Anyone else bought any movies for October? I've bought The Babadook, Daybreakers, Silver Bullet, The Cabin in the Woods, Otis, a 5 movie collection, and The Sixth Sense.

KyriakosCH

Imo the Babadook was very good, apart from
Spoiler
the absolute end, which seemed like it tried to make this supernatural instead of the obvious psychological/delusion-based explanation it had going.

DUDE! Apart from "Hausu", which I've never heard of, unless you meant "House", all of those films are on my favourites list!

And, don't you dare apologize for The Witches Of Eastwick. That is clearly the best movie ever about witches. Practical Magic is pretty good too though, surprisingly.

And "Bone Tomahawk" I just watched recently and, yeah, that's some pretty shocking gore towards the end after a LOT of fairly slow Tarantino-style lead-up. Great movie!

Hausu is asian oddball splatter crack at its finest. Basically the asian version of Evil Dead, only instead of the TREE there's a PIANO.

Watch, and learn :D

I'm gonna go and steal Ponch's checklist:

Curses/witchcraft: The Witches (1990)
Possession/demonic: Poltergeist
Undead (zombies/vampires): Poultrygeist (No, really, that is a movie. Classic Troma flick. It's awesomesauce with extra kibble!)
Ghost stories: Mama
Slasher flicks: Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Psychological horror: Oculus
Creatures/monsters: The Fly (1986)
Comedy/parody: Beetlejuice
Miscellaneous horror: The Call
Miscellaneous not-necessarily horror: The Thing (1982)

VampireWombat

I have decided since October only has 31 days that this month I'm going to watch the more scifi horror stuff regardless of what happens with this.
So, this month I will be watching the Alien vs Predator movies, Prometheus, and Alien 1-4. The Fly 1&2, The Thing, They Live, Virus, and Moon. Maybe even Species 1 & 3.

mkennedy

For creature/monster films I would suggest the Mimic movies.
Spoiler
The second one had a really cool twist at the end.

A Tale of Two Sisters

Creatures/monsters:
The Host
