beside the obvious being sued and then hung drawn and quatered by lawyers for using music by commercial artists in my games how does the ags community feel about it, is it frowned upon?

~edit~

its cause i'm basicaly lazy and im gonna use mp3s i have obtained which of course i have no legal right to do at all. i just wanted to know if i'd get shunned for it.

Trapezoid

Not at all. A lot of classic amature adventures use midi files from popular songs and commercial adventures...

Evil

I think if it was a midi there wouldnt be such a big charge either... Also think about how big they are... Like would you get in less trubble for using Duke Ellington or Britney Spears? Just think it through first...

Trapezoid

Use midis, not mp3s. Midis are smaller, so you can use more of them. I don't like games with repetitive music.

i was gonna have a different track per room, probably a jukebox in the game somwhere aswell, like i said just wondering if any1 had a problem with it.

and besides if i ever finsih the game the music would be in a music pack anyway, so size isnt an issue (for once)

Trapezoid

There is an issue if the sound pack is so big no one will want to download it. Keep that in mind and include MIDIs as well.

Being lazy is never a good excuse.

Raggit

No offense but you can't really be lazy and make a good enjoyable adventure game.

As far as using somebody elses music goes...

I personally think it is wrong if you use it without permission. Just my opinion.

kejoxen

im lazy in the having no musical talent sense.

this is just something i was wondering about, something i may intend to do or not to do in my game

thanks to Raggit and Trumgottist for their opinions

n3tgraph

there are enough guys around here who are willing to do some music for your game.... the only thing you need to do is show a demo or some screenshots to get in the sphere of your game and to see if the game is worth making music for

DG's tutorial to make your own adventure game music:

1. Find a copy of a MOD tracking program.

2. Lay down your drum beats for your first track.

3. Decide it's crap

4. Ask someone on the forum to do it for you.

5. Pretend it's yours.

There!

Now you can make your own music using my five step method.

Happy composing, Mozarts!

Spyros

I have used 2 commercial songs in my games.
No one has ever bother me so no problem.
( I didn't expect a member of Amorphis playing my game and realise that I have used one of their songs)

Adamski

I'm using other people's music for Byzantine. As long as they don't sue me, then no worries.

Evil

* Evil starts DG's tutorial by downloading a huge MOD tracking program and then realizes that DG's tutorial is crap...

Am I the only person who keeps meaning to buy a white pot just so that if anyone uses that phrase I can wittily retort - 'well my pot is white, so that would be just fine'?
