improving the savegamedialog - looking for a tutorial

is there a way of improving the graphics of the savegamedialog esp.
nicer background and buttons.
if this is not possible without changing the sourcecode (no idea how todo that) , has anyone got an idea of building my own savegamedialog inside my gui that should also use a list or something.the player should be able to save and load more than one savegame...
