"Duck" tape is the oldest inventory item in the book! Well, the oldest one is a key.

Ten "useful" inventory items:

- The Internet (yes, the whole internet in your inventory, somehow, and I'm not talking about accessing the internet)
- An 18-wheeler truck (Actually, I wouldn't be suprised if this has been an inventory item, with the absurdity of some adventure games)
- AGA himself (he could be an inventory item, right? right? maybe we'll have that on Mittens Kwest... coming the day Dave Gilbert gets to work on it!)
- A hammer made out of cheese (someone once suggested me to use that, or something similar to to that)
- You soul (hey, this one is pretty cool!)
- A copy of the adventure game you're currently playing (breaking the 4th wall :o)
- The mouse pointer (Breaking the 4th wall again. Use mouse pointer with whatever, and then your mouse gets stuck there. Your EGO breaks free and you lose the game).
- A party (in your pants, and everyone's invited! (bad pun))
- A picture of your character, naked. (no comment)
- Last, but not least, Adventure Game Studio (you can make games within your game!)
Cool topic! Best of all that what I've quoted is AGS! I've just remembered Sim-Sim from SQ4! It will be really cool to make game right in game. :)
And YOUR soul seems interesting. More interesting that Internet does! You will need to simulate soul of any player for that...

But it so great dreams. How about for example GIRL in inventory? :D Not just icon for directing like in BS3, but exactly GIRL. Or not girl, maybe somebody else who you can use like good inventory item in many different ways.

Oh. by the way - in LSL7 there are some kind of erotic photos of Larry as an invetiry item, so it isn't example!

It might sound weird and nuts but I have been thinking of this, which items haven't been used EVER in a adventure game... at least not yet. Here is my list of stuff nobody haven't been used in a adventure game that I know. Correct me if I'm wrong at a part.

A jojo
A skunk (note: the black cat you get in Day of the Tentacle doesn't count as a skunk)
A plastic goose with a rope on the top (Just kidding!)
A pen-eraser
A comic-book
A rubber-ducky
A voodoo-mask
Corndogs
Can of beer
A Grim reaper suit
A chicken suit
A DVD-movie
Some garlic
Some curry-powder

Well that's all I can think up of for now. You guys can tell me things that I missed.

You get a comic book in flight of the amazon queen.

How about:

Godzilla
An antelope
Ten billion cheese sticks
Nothing
Everything
A broken record
Purple boxing gloves
Guybrush Threepwood
A piece of paper proclaiming, "Windows 95 Sucks!"
A pamphlet for "Carribean Vices"
A big festering pile of dog poo
The meaning of life
A picture of the Mona Lisa holding a blue cup
The letter A
The letter G
The letter S
Sesame seeds
Vomit
A live fish
999 million bottles of beer on the wall
Now let's find out if gasoline is flammable!

Actually, I'm pretty sure that you get the hair of a three-toed sloth in Flight of the Amazon Queen, though I can't say with conviction that I remember whether it's only got three toes or not.

You could really list just about any absurd thing, but what about stuff that we see every day but just for whatever reason has yet to be used? Lessee, here... What about:

A pack of hot dogs (Absurd-ish, but still easy to come by)?
Origami paper (admittedly not all that common, but...)?
A computer mouse or keyboard (To my limited knowledge, you've never been able to actually carry one around seperate from a computer)?

That's all I've got.

"Companions of Xanth" had that, briefly.

the main characters cut-off finger

In Runaway you have a cut-off finger as an inventory item. It just isn't the main characters ;)
